AMG is one of the best tuners out there. Created by two former Mercedes-Benz engineers in 1967
AMG has made some of the craziest cars ever. What started as a small tuning shop making
custom upgrades to Mercedes engines and selling body kits end up being one of me most recognizable
brands. From concept cars to racing legends here are 7 of the craziest AMGs ever.
The 300SL is one of the most iconic cars of all time and would be a true travesty to modify
such a car but apparently not all peoples think the same. AMG would build two versions
of the 300SL. The first one was introduced in 1974. Originally AMG thought to put a 6.3L
V8 but it didn't fit so instance they chose a 4.5L V8 the same engine that the S-class
had. Also the car received new suspensions, new intakes, new interior and extensive body
and chassis modification. But the most crazy and obscure version of the 300SL would come
in 1996 when Sultan of Brunei propose the idea of converting 6 Mercedes 300SL both Gollwing
and Speedster to modern cars. So AMG removed the original straight 6 engine and replaced
it with a 6.0L V8 the same engine that W124 E60 AMG used. The new beast had 380hp and
427 ft-lbs. Other changes consisted on the rear suspension which were borrowed from the
SL, C36 AMG breaks and a new interior with Recaro seats, carbon fiber dashboard and a
new elctronic system. This conversion costed €1,000,000 and a total of 11 cars were build
some of which were speedster and most of them went to Brunei. The 300SL AMG is easily identified
by the low profile tires and their 5 spoke AMG wheels which were in the most AMGs of
the time. I think that this car looks awesome and sound awesome but I think that would be
better if AMG had left the original 300SL alone and instead AMG had built a new car
from the ground up like RUF did this year with their Yellowbird.
The original A-class wasn't the best car in the world far away for being one. But the
last gen A-class is one of the best hatchbacks out there especially the A45 version. But
this is not the first A-class to carry on the AMG badge. Back in the early 2000s when
the original A-class was just launched AMG did some crazy experiments. The first car
was the A38. The original 1.9L 125hp engine remained in the front but to increase the
power output AMG decide to put a second 1.9L engine under the boot floor like a Smart ForTwo.
It had 250BHP and 265lb/ft of torque, helping it to accelerate from 0-100 in 5.9 seconds,
something pretty impressive. The rear engine drove the rear wheels which was activated
with a switch next to the window controls and both gearboxes were connected to the same
shifter. Also, the AMG version was lower than the normal A-class and fitted with the brake
calipers and discs off the E55 AMG. The car was never meant for production for the simple
fact that was to dangerous for public. Bu the experiments of AMG with A-class didn't
end there because this time they got an order for a road car. An unknown businessman order
AMG to build a special version of the A-class. The original idea was to put a 500hp V8 but
they found that there was not enough clearance for the unit. So instant they put the 3.2L
V6 engine that they were using for the C32 and SLK32. The A32 end up having 370hp a maximum
speed of 250kmh (limited) and could accelerate form 0-100 in 5 S.
The SL73 is one of the most crazy conversions AMG has ever done. Before AMG supplied Pagani
the huge displacement engine to use in their Zonda, Mercedes used it for one of their models:
the super exclusive SL 73 built in only 85 units between 1999 and 2001. In order to get
one you first had to order already expensive SL600 from your local Mercedes-Benz dealer.
After handing it over to AMG, together with additional $50,000 or so, you had to wait
in order for German tuners to work their magic. AMG bored the 6.0L engine to 7.3L displacement
which churned out as much as 518 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. More than 2 tones were propelled
to 100 kmh in just 5 seconds, and to the top speed of 300kmh.
The "Red Pig" is the car that created the name AMG and gave them the reputation
that they have today. AMG took the pride and joy of the Mercedes the S-class and stripped
it down increased the displacements and called it Red Pig something that showed the craziness
of the AMG since their early days. The regular 300 SEL was powered by 247-horsepower 6.3L
V8 and could accelerate from 0-100 in 6.6s something very impressive for a 1968 luxury
sedan weighing 1800 kg. AMG first increased the engine's displacement to 6.8L. Then
they replaced pretty much everything including the camshafts, pistons, intakes, etc. Power
gained from such an undertaking read 428 hp and 448 lb-ft of torque. Although they also
added aluminum doors, in bizarre fashion, AMG had decided to keep the original rear
bench seat, wood trim and other unnecessary details. AMG raced it at 24h of Spa and ended
up in the second place behind much smaller Ford Capri RS. In the process, "The Red
Pig" had obliterated all others, including Alfa Romeo GTA's and BMW E9's.
The 90s brought a lot of great supercars but also a lot of homologation cars and the CLK
GTR is definitely one of the best ones. First introduced for the 1997 FIA Gt Championship
the CLK-GTR used a 6.9L V12 with 630 hp. Later on Mercedes introduced the CLK LM which they
build for the 24h of Le Mans. They replaced the V12 with a 6L V8 with 600hp. Mercedes
felt that the M119 would have better reliability at speeds while still performing the same
amount of power as the M120 due to air restrictor regulations. However, Mercedes belief that
the M119 V8s would be better suited to Le Mans was proven wrong as both cars suffered
engine failures within the first few hours of the race, leaving Mercedes dejected. Returning
to FIA GT, Mercedes-Benz replaced their older CLK GTRs with the new CLK LMs and saw greater
success. The two cars easily won every remaining race. In 1998 Mercedes introduced the homologation
version of the CLK GTR. The asking price was $1,547,620 making it the most expensive car
of the time. A total of 26 road cars were build with 6 of them being roadsters. H.W.A.
also constructed a second variant, known as the CLK GTR Super Sport. These cars were similar
to CLK GTRs, but the 6.9L engine was increased to 7.3L 5 were built with the 7.3L engine.
The SL65 was already a crazy car with a 6.0-liter turbocharged V12 engine, the hardtop convertible
produced a whopping 740 lb-ft of torque. But AMG thought that that wasn't enough so they
made it even crazier with making the Black Series. They put bigger turbos made the car
lighter and made a car that no one could drive. The Black Series has 60HP more compared to
the regular SL65 and weights 250kg less. Torque figures for the SL65 and Black Series remain
identical. All this power and torque was sent to the rear wheels through a 5 speed AMG Speedshift
Plus automatic transmission making the rear wheels to burn quickly. Also, the Black Series
is wider than the SL65 and is easily identified by the wider body, giant wheels, the rear
retractable spoiler and the carbon fiber parts. To make the car lighter AMG removed the folding
roof replacing it with a fixed roof.
At least all the other cars in the list made some sense except the A-class but one wasa concept and the other was a special order
but R-class in the other side didn't make any sense at all. The R-class was a wired
car in the first place part minivan, part SUV and part station wagon but Mercedes called
it Sports Cruiser. Later on in 2006 AMG saw the opportunity to put their newly developed
6.2L naturally aspirated engine on it. What they ended up was one of the best sleeper
ever created. The hand built V8 engine produced 503 hp (375 kW) and 465 lb·ft (630 N·m)
of torque. The R63 AMG was electronically limited to a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph),
and could accelerate form 0–100 kmh in under 5 S. Due to poor sales the R63 was canceled
1 year later after its introduction.
