Once a year, Muslims around the world observe Ramadan.

What is Ramadan?

What are the traditions associated with it?

Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar.

According to the Quran (the sacred text of the Islam), Muhammad first received his revelations

from Allah during the month of Ramadan.

For this reason, Ramadan is regarded as the holiest month of the year.

The primary custom associated with Ramadan is fasting (going without food or drink).

Muslims are required to fast each day from sunrise to sunset.

Meals may be eaten before sunrise each day, and after sunset each evening.

The pre-dawn meal is known as the suhoor, while the post sunset meal is known as the

iftar.

Muslims are also supposed to refrain from smoking or engaging in other activities that

might be harmful to the body.

Swearing and arguing is also discouraged during this holy month.

Muslims are also supposed to spend additional time praying, and giving to charities during

Ramadan.

Followers of Islam are also encouraged to read the Quran during Ramadan.

Although it is not required, some even choose to read the entire Quran over the course of

the month.

The iftar meal (after sunset) varies greatly by region.

However, in the Middle East, the most common items eaten might be roast chicken, lamb kebabs,

grilled vegetables, salads, and various types of rich desserts.

Water and fruit juices are the most common beverages.

This meal is considered a time of fellowship with friends and family.

Some iftar gatherings can become quite large, with more than 100 people attending the same

meal.

There are some who are exempt from the fasting process.

The elderly, small children, women who are pregnant, or those who are ill or injured

may all be exempt from the daily fasting.

However, in the case of pregnant women, or those who are ill or injured, they will be

expected to make up their fasting time once they are physically capable.

The first day of Ramadan is known as Hilal, which means "crescent moon".

The arrival of the crescent moon (which usually occurs a day or two after a new moon) marks

the beginning of Ramadan.

The most important night of Ramadan is Laylat al-Qadr.

It is believed by Muslims that this is the first night that Muhammad received revelations

from Allah, in which the Quran was revealed to him.

It is believed that the Laylat al-Qadr (which means "the night of power") occurred on

either the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th night of Ramadan.

The final night of Ramadan is known as Eid al-Fitr.

This means that a new crescent moon has been sighted, thus concluding the period of fasting.

If weather prevents a new crescent moon from being spotted, then the fasting will conclude

after a period of 30 days.

On the modern, western calendar, Ramadan is not a specific time of year.

Because of the variations between the two calendars, Ramadan can fall at any time of

the year.

For example, in the early 1990s, Ramadan was in February, but by the late 1990s, Ramadan

was being celebrated in December.

In the late 2000s, Ramadan was in August or September.

In 2015, Ramadan occurred in June.

Timothy "Tim" Walker

born in 1970

is a British fashion photographer

who regularly works for magazines in the industry

Such as Vogue, W and Love

After graduating in 1994

Walker worked as a freelance photographer assistant in London

before moving to New York City

as a full-time assistant for Richard Avedon

When returning to England, he initially

focused on portraiture for some British headlines

At 25, she shot his first fashion story for Vogue

We use cooking oil everyday, be it for frying, stir-frying, sauteing, or even in salads.

There are endless choices of cooking oils on our store shelves, right from butter, margarine,

refined oil, or extra-virgin oil, and hey sometimes we do not put adequate thought into

selecting the right kind of oil, or reading the label to see how pure the oil is.

Hi everyone, welcome to SCImplify.

If you are new to the channel, I am Nirupama, and I make videos on food, health and nutrition.

In today's video, I am going to talk about the major categories of oils, and the ones

you should be using.

I have made another video on fats and why you should be consuming fats.

I will link the video on the screen as well in the description box.

The first category of oils are REFINED OILS.

The most common refined oils available in the market are sunflower, safflower, groundnut,

soybean, canola, or vegetable oil.

Manufacturing refined oils is a multistage process, and it mainly involves heating the

seeds at a very high temperatures, somewhere between 110 to 180 degress to extract the

oil, and further refine the oil using chemicals so that its taste can be neutralized and its

smell deodorized.

Which is why you will notice that most refined oils have a pale colour and they don't have

any odour.

During this processing, there are chemical changes that take place in the oil.

The useful unsaturated fatty acids in the oil do not hold up well to the high heat,

and there are changes in their structure and properties.

Also, oil is a very important source of Vitamin E which is a very useful antioxidant for our

body.

Several researchers have confirmed that heat destroys Vitamin E. Therefore, effectively

refined oil does not retain much of the nutrition, antioxidants or minerals present in the original

seeds.

The second category of oils are COLD PRESSED oils.

Cold pressed oils are produced by crushing the seeds or nuts and forcing the oil out.

They are called cold-pressed because there is no external application of heat involved.

And because there is no heat, these oils retain much of their nutritional properties and antioxidants

like Vitamin E. The fatty acid bonds in these oils are intact, which is why cold-pressed

oils also retain much of their heart healthy properties.

Visually the cold pressed oils look darker, and they have a stronger aroma.

The most common cold pressed oils available in the market are groundnut, coconut, sesame,

extra virgin or virgin olive oil, and in India we also have the kachhi ghani mustard oil.

Disadvantages of cold pressed oils are that they are more expensive than the refined versions,

and this is primarily because they require the usage of best quality seeds.

Also, less oil is extracted because of the absence of heat.

The cols-pressed oils also have a shorter shelf life, which is why you should buy them

in smaller amounts, and store them in a cold and dark place.

Between, refined and cold pressed oils, cold pressed oils are more nutritious, they have

more antioxidants, and they are good for your heart health.

Yes, they might be expensive, but they are definitely worth the buy.

These oils have a stronger flavor and aroma, which I personally like, but some people might

not like it.

If you are frying or deep frying, you can still go ahead and use your refined oils,

as they have a higher smoke point.

But, you can keep some cold-pressed oils at home for those occasions when you are stir-frying,

or sauteing food, or even making salad dressings.

The third category of oils are HYDROGENATED OILS.

Hydrogenated oils are artificially produced by forcing hydrogen gas into the oil.

The more solid the oil, the more hydrogenated it is.

Examples of hydrogenated oils are margarine, or Vanaspati.

During the process of hydrogenation, the unsaturated double bonds in fatty acids get converted

into saturated bonds, and we all know that saturated fatty acids are not the healthiest.

Also, during partial hydrogenation, another change might take place, which is production

of trans fats, which by the way, do not naturally occur in the oil.

Trans fats are not good for you, and this is something that is unanimously agreed upon

by doctors, nutritionists and scientists.

You know, all those cookies, pastries, frozen foods, or fried snacks are a source of trans

fats.

Goverments have laid regulations regarding the maximum permissible limit of trans fat

in foods.

So make sure to read the labels and buy foods that follow this regulation.

Oils are not just something that you use for frying your onions and garlic.

They provide you with nutrition.

Moreover, they influence the flavor and aroma of a cuisine.

For example, you cannot make Asian stir fries without using sesame oil.

Olive oil is integral to Spanish, Italian, and Greek cooking.

In India, certain food recipes demand the use of coconut oil or mustard oil depending

on the region.

So, to achieve an all-round experience of taste and health, it might be worth investing

in a good quality cooking oil.
