Waching daily May 27 2017

welcome to get indie gaming coming up in

this May edition of our top five

best-looking indie games on Kickstarter

we have a title that's already being

compared to journey a sweet-looking

Metroidvania and one of the most

successfully funded games in recent

years but first let's take a quick look

back at our Kickstarter games from April

man came around the survival game filled

with tough choices in a time of crisis

just made its target of 10,000 euros and

should be out towards the end of the

year the pixel art platformer Eagle

Island was another success story for

April receiving pledges of over 25,000

pounds versus their 20,000 pound target

following a slow start the team behind

the hugely ambitious rise of the King

ended their campaign early and have

since stated the gamers on hold with

their efforts having been moved on to

other projects

sadly the watch maker also fell short of

its funding targets although unlike rise

of the king the devs have vowed to

continue and see out the rest of the

work needed to get it launched finally

for the April recap last month's number

one safe house pushed past its funding

aim of $5,000 and should hit the market

sometime in q4 later this year with that

all covered let's tuck into Mays

best-looking Kickstarter offerings

coming fifth this month from the Madrid

based grub shock games sons of the void

is a 2d space dungeon crawler that puts

the player in charge of saving the

universe from destruction by way of

controlling a three member squad with

two mobile games already under the

team's belt this should be their first

title for the PC and it's expected in

the summer of next year so what makes

this crawler any different to the hoards

of look-alikes already out on the market

well primarily the thing that interests

me the most of that sons of the void

comes from the fact the missions are

procedurally generated

unlike other crawlers this should mean

each and every mission will be different

every time you play it will of course be

interesting to see how grog shot go

ahead and implement this as it seems one

of if not the key feature of the title

on the gameplay front in each mission

you must choose a three members squad

from an overall team of nine each

character or voidling as they're

charmingly called

has different abilities and gameplay

mechanics so you have to choose them

wisely depending on the features and

enemies within a level during your

mission you will only play with one of

these characters but you are able to

swap between them at any given moment

local co-op is to be included which will

allow you and a friend to control two

characters on certain missions stretch

gold above the 45,000 euro target that's

just over $50,000 include an enhanced

soundtrack weapon mixing and a possible

console release this one runs through

until June the 8th

a group of former Lionhead developers

who worked on the fable series have at

the time of publication already broken

through their 30,000 pound goal with the

funding period set to end June 3rd kin

seed is described as a whimsical sandbox

adventure a persistent 2d RPG in which

players make choices that impact

generations to come just like in the

popular farming sim stardew valley

players can spend their days harvesting

crops and raising livestock or perhaps

even managing their own tavern or

apothecary each character you encounter

in the game remembers your deeds and

misdeeds and will eventually age and die

when your own avatar dies you take

control of your children and continue

your story through successive

generations should you the player do

something foolish or harmful you'll find

that the king seeds population has a

memory that extends through generations

making difficulties for the player for

many years to come likewise good deeds

will also be remembered which may help

the player when forming with friendships

romances and generally getting on with

the people who live around them more

action orientated players also won't be

left out with the possibilities of

farming and fishing to name but to the

game will also feature a few grisly

creatures that can be found lurking in

its woods players can choose to take on

these beasts in real-time combat by

doing so perhaps finding some useful

unique goods that will help you get

items that no one else can create kin

seed is currently in the works for PC

although the developers have included a

stretch goal to also bring it to

consoles towards the back end of next

year

and taking third place this month we

have unformed a.2d Metroidvania that set

in ancient china that's inspired by the

horror fiction of HP Lovecraft the game

comes from black fire games with a team

worked on the likes of Rainbow six

Bioshock and far cry on the forum will

offer players a large number of distinct

environments ranging from underground

mines to mountain salt lakes each area

will change dynamically with the dev

saying they plan on implementing puzzle

solving mechanics to further change a

given levels arrangement as for combat

where were likely to find something with

a decent level of challenge that's

heavily influenced by the games from the

souls series creatures will attack in an

unpredictable manner forcing players to

think several steps ahead of every

engagement in order to vanquish their

foes in perhaps an unusual move unformed

will also feature eight to ten secondary

story arcs and sub quests these will be

in addition to the central storyline and

players will acquire the side quests

from NPCs by completing them you're

likely to see a change within the gaming

world or learn even more about the

environment around you these branching

storylines should help round off the

overall experience and enhance the

element of replayability the team here

are looking for $20,000 to complete the

project stretch goals include an

extended world with additional levels

additional controllable players and

animated cutscenes as a huge fan of this

type of game and with this one looking

so down lovely we're very much hoping

unformed makes it past its goals and

hope to see it hit the shelves on the PC

with consoles to follow at some point

next year

despite extensive testing of

communications prior to launch all

contact with xo1 was lost following in

the footsteps of the likes of Marble

Madness Monkey Ball and Rock of Ages xo1

is being billed as a momentum based

exoplanetary exploration game in perhaps

a nod to tiny wings players take control

of a morphing spacecraft that can change

between a smooth ball and a glider on

command by gathering speed on down

slopes players are able to launch their

craft into the air before shifting into

the glider to travel through and explore

the planet

the game features 12 procedurally

generated landscapes each with their own

geology weather systems and sky scrapes

named as one of the best games in show

at rezzed by both Eurogamer and The

Guardian and in some areas people have

hinted that this could be the next

journey the team behind the game are

looking for 35,000 Australian dollars to

help fund its development as it stands

today xo1 has a target launch date of q1

next year and will initially ship on the

PC with consoles to follow

as this video comes to air in one of the

most successful campaigns of recent

times the number one indie game for May

has already received over 2.3 million

dollars and has beaten its funding

target by well over 300% ashes of

creation is an open-world non faction

MMORPG that naturally enough is set

within a fantasy world like other MMOs

the game features player versus player

player versus environmental elements

solo and group quests and other

traditional gameplay elements of the

genre however what sets ashes of

creation apart from other MMOs

it is attitude to world building players

will have a direct impact on how the

world around them changes and evolves

thanks to the game's unique system of

location nodes these nodes are best

thought of in places for settlements and

are seemingly widespread throughout the

world they can be developed as players

participate in normal activities and

quests within what's called their zone

of influence these nodes can grow into

camps villages and at their pinnacle

into vast cities however and in keeping

with real life nothing in ashes of

creation will last forever world events

may trigger horrific monsters that can

attack nodes perhaps your village will

be hit by a natural disaster and then of

course there's a threat posed by other

players every node has the possibility

of being attacked and being destroyed

the notion here being the act of

competing interest that lies in the

heart central to the idea behind the

nodal design in another area of interest

the games economies are said to be

regionalised both in terms of their

markets and resources caravans will be

created and will facilitate the

transport of goods between each region

these caravans are integral parts of

city development as cities require a

massive amount of resources to be able

to upgrade them players will be able to

move their resources and set up shop for

example in another area of the world to

take advantage of new and developing

markets naturally there's an awful lot

more going on here than we can do fair

justice - in the showcase video so for

more information please on head over to

the games website and funding page I'll

leave a link within the video

description perhaps it goes without

saying the ashes of creation we have

game showing an immense amount of

ambition and one that's evidently

resonated with MMO fans globally of

course with such ambition comes a level

of cynicism and hype with which the devs

no doubt will be mindful to manage we

also know the game is set to roll out

with a subscription model in the region

of 15 or so dollars per month this kind

of seems fitting for a game of this type

although again this won't please

everyone

in any case ashes of creation looks to

be one of the most anticipated games of

its type for many years with a shipping

date of late 2018 here's wishing the

team behind it all the best with the

long work ahead and with that thanks for

watching as always we'd love to hear

your thoughts on the games featured here

today so please let us know in the

comments section below we're now

planning and putting together our videos

for June so until next time please have

fun out there

stay safe and see you again soon

HUMANITY IS SUFFERING FROM A DIVIDE AND CONQUER STRATEGY - Duration: 7:22.

HUMANITY IS SUFFERING FROM A DIVIDE AND CONQUER STRATEGY

So much infighting.

So much disagreement.

So much disharmony.

Humanity is dazed and confused like never before.

Given theres so much intellectual and emotional carnage eating away at the truth, let me try

and break down politics, economics and the division it has on all of us:

The left and right are in total warfare and pretty much have an unprecedented level

of hatred towards each other.

This is fueled by the fake news media monopolies and the big money which is

secretly funding certain causes, groups and protests.

The right call the left snowflakes because of their misplaced social justice

warrior mania, whilst the left call the right racists because of their constitutionalist

and nationalist preferences.

The left hate Trump, while many on the right support him.

Both sides have unfortunately been sucked into the left/right duopoly.

Therefore, they dont understand that the two-party system is a two-party tyranny

which works for the same banks, multinationals and oligarchs.

Besides a blatant divide and conquer agenda, the reason these two artificial competitors

have been sucked into this war is because theyve been subject to extremist activity

on each end.

Unfortunately they dont realise how much they have in common, especially ending

the scams and corruption by the political, financial and corporate excrete.

To those watching on the outside we see them as on the same team, but stupidly fighting

each other instead of their common enemy.

It is such a waste of energy that needs to be refocused towards the real problems,

which can be summed by two words: the corporatocracy and the idiocracy.

One of the reasons the right believe theyre superior is because many of them think that

Trump is a genuine patriot who wants to make shit better again.

Some people say he is the poster boy for the good guys which are in the shadows

fighting certain layers of the deep state.

Others say he has sold out to the neocons, which appears to be the case given hes

bombing innocent people, flirting with Saudi Arabia and bending over for Israel.

Regardless, there is still a very small chance that this is all a game of drain

the swamp chess, which would make him an exceptional actor.

In the middle however, are two other opposing camps: those who want an anarcho-capitalist

system and those who want to move to a money-less, abundance-based social system.

Fortunately, both at least agree that smaller government, decentralisation and relocalised

decision-making are initial steps forward.

Meanwhile, a huge percentage of jobs will be automated over the next decade and beyond,

bringing the argument for a basic income or living wage to replace all welfare

programs and support into the spotlight.

This concept has been shown to be at least equally or even more cost-effective than current

welfare policies and practices.

All this amongst a chaotic and highly manipulated global economy which has massive

bubbles in debt, stocks, real estate, bonds and derivatives, whilst main street

continues to deteriorate with high unofficial employment rates, a dissolving middle class,

stagnated wages, a retail apocalypse, outrageous student debt, increasing poverty and homelessness,

longer live-at-home periods, unsustainable private debt to GDP ratios, hyperinflating

economies and just the general threat of the end to the current fiat monetary system.

Cryptocurrencies are soaring as a result.

Precious metal prices are still highly manipulated and suppressed.

Some economists are calling for a modern debt jubilee to soften the blow of a collapsing

monetary system.

Then there is of course the threat of WW3, keeping many people locked into fear.

Now dont get me wrong, were all a bit confused here.

We might get it more right or wrong than others, but much of it is guesswork.

For example, are Russia and China in on the global government or are they genuinely

standing against the money-makers?

Will the economy end in destruction, will it transition to a world reserve currency

of some type, or will it do both?

Are we going to see massive social unrest or will it be a relatively smooth conversion

into the future?

Will that future be one that respects sovereignty and natural law, or will it be a totalitarian,

technocratic planetary state?

Who knows.

Its such a fucking mess.

False flags, false news, false leaders, false hope; its enough to make you want to put

your head back in the sand, at least every now and again.

But then flipping the script, it is a bloody amazing experience weve got.

Who knew life on earth could be so challenging and entertaining at the same time?

At the end of the day though, this whole creation is just a game of growth, each of us at varied

stages of psychological, philosophical, emotional and behavioural development.

I wish more people would really get this, because wed work way better together to

cure the insane asylum called humanity in the 21st Century.

The ironic aspect is that we all want an end to this shit, but our understanding of the

issues are different, and therefore our solutions are too.

Ultimately, put your beliefs down humanity, youre hurting yourself.

Look into the hearts of your fellow-men and see your reflection.

Its the only way were going to come out of this in our favour.

The Weeknd Surprises Toronto Crowd With Drake - Duration: 1:08.

Hey guys for Complex News, I'm Natasha Martinez.

At The Weeknd's Starboy: Legend of the Fall 2017 World Tour stop in Toronto Friday night,

he brought out Drake as a surprise guest, proving that community over competition is

always a good thing.

The crowd at the Air Canada Centre went crazy seeing the two Toronto natives share the stage

together.

Drakes set included 'Fake Love' and 'Gyalchester'.

There

was a time when Drake was trying to sign The Weeknd to OVO but when he refused Abel became

Drakes competition as his albums started going gold and platinum.

The two even shared a hug on stage, so perhaps this bromance will turn into some studio time

and we can get new music from these two asap.

That's your news for now, for more of today's trending stories subscribe to Complex on YouTube.

Vena - Jdu(i) za svým snem / Go for my (your) dream / 6 měsíců (months) fitness - Duration: 2:21.

We as a human and our character...

We have a lot of good character abilities but also the bad ones.

And these have usually bigger impact to our thinking...

And this is obstacles which is hard to go through...

Well, at least i had this problem.

Let's go back in time a couple of years ago...

Wow...What you see now is me when i was 15 years old.

I had 125 kilograms, 180 cm and 40 kg overweight...

Nobody believed that i could look normal in future...

I heard bad words every day that i am going to be FAT NOTHING forever...

I believed to everyone because it was also adult ones who were telling me these things

and these adult ones were my example, i looked up to them, believed them..

But something has changed one day...

And i my friends realized one thing.

I realized that i have my own mind and I can reach whatever I want

and not to do not achieve what other people tell to me...

So I woke up and started to do something.

I lost 20 kg and on the weight of 105 kg I started to share my story with you.

And give you motivation to whatever you try to reach.

Now it has been 6 months since i started doing fitness in the right way how it should be.

I have 90 Kg which is in count 35 kg of overweight down

and now it is just question of time when i will get more muscles and shapes.

It goes slow but for sure and I know that I am gonna reach my dream

just like i know for sure the fact that YOU can reach YOUR GOALS

It is all about what you think, what you do and what you believe in and not about what other people tell you...

DESPITE ALL THE OBSTACLES, TOGETHER WE WILL ACHIEVE OUR DREAMS...

MANSION WITHIN A MANSION | Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion Pt.9 - Duration: 20:57.

hello everyone it's me Jayskibean and

welcome back the Spooky's jump-scare

mansion I keep all the same Spooky's

House of jump-scares because that's like

the alternate a name for it but whatever

so anyway last episode oh there's a note

this place is finally starting to affect

me I've seen enough horror movies to

know how to survive a simple ghost or

two but these monsters keep getting

faster and stranger ok so last episode

we had the devil guy and I sincerely

apologize for there being no audio right

now I'm looking and audio is recording

on this video right now the game audio

is going so everything should be good if

not then I'm let's figure something out

so anyway we ran away from like the

devil guy last episode and we got the

checkpoint at floor 750 so we're going

to see what this has in store for us

Oh looks like very very soon

looks very similar like it's like we're

still in the restaurant so I mean we

have it oh God

maybe we haven't hit the UM the 100

floor mark yet so technically that

checkpoint after 50 floors was just

because we made it to that 54 checkpoint

because you know how in the options menu

you can skip to certain floors and

that's what the um that's what the

passwords mean like when you ask to skip

to a certain floor it you had to put in

the password skip there so I'm gonna try

this episode to do

I'm going to try to do 150 floor so I'm

gonna try to make it to because I only

250 floors last episode I want to kind

of make up for it and see how far I get

so anyway I wonder what's going to if

anything is going to pop up at all in

the second half going towards 800 so I

want to hit 900 900 for episode 9 this

is the ninth one I think look at that

look at all that crazy so we're going to

see we keep checking down sorry if I

keep looking down like oh boy I see

holes of the ceiling I've heard that guy

since the beginning oh I don't even know

what to expect because I actually didn't

see that one I just heard him like the

clicky just nothing there okay

because he makes clicky noises when

you're close to him I don't want to die

let's just go just go this comes out of

holes of the ceiling apparently and I

don't want anything to do with that

I just don't just don't I just don't

wanna die

it's gonna be okay there's nothing to be

afraid of just holes in the ceiling

nothing's gonna happen to me I'm gonna

be okay you're gonna make it 15 more

floors yeah nothing to worry about

just cuz it's getting loud doesn't mean

anything hopefully you can hear it but

it is getting loud oh no I'm just glad

that we only did 50 for us and we didn't

do more because that would have been

devastating how long is this hallway so

it's like a chase hallway

it's okay we're good we're gonna make it

don't like it the floor 800 we're almost

there

like right there right there right there

we got it good

go get it and just go and get got and we

gonna get out of this restaurant

McDonald's want to be looking even a

monster like even the devil itself like

the thing was it was like McDonald's

colors weird hope nothing else pops oh

hey nope in order to survive those house

we need to keep writing notes I must do

everything a central protagonist would

do and certain obscure oh dude we're

like getting the same notes we got in

the beginning of the game now it's like

everything's coming back to me who's

rewriting these things who knows I know

the note well I haven't died so good

okay so I feel like hang in there

boink I feel like the note says they

just started breathe like started over

started rewriting themselves so I don't

even know if they're canon anymore

because I'm seeing a bunch of repeats

because I'm dying and stuff so I'm like

seeing repeats so it's okay we're going

to make it a 900 this time fellows

fellows and ladies ladies and gents etc

okay

she's a little redonk in the

effectiveness of the spokane we read

that we knew that dude that was crazy

was the brain room again I don't like

the brain room I've seen the brain room

in awhile I have like no stamina oh yeah

last episode she said she gave me

infinite stamina what's up with that

that is gone

what

so does he just randomly pop

ah dude

I thought he was just like an event

thing so is he gone okay so do they just

randomly pop there's like no what is

this wow what a mansion inside another

mansion maybe I've made it all the way

to the end of the house maybe this is

like a resting place or another entrance

perhaps whatever the case I think this

is a good spot the rest yeah do okay if

you insist

oh that's locked okay looks good this

way

that's not locked gulp broken broken Oh

end of the note this mansion is strange

I think the bricks and wood are you

actually just painted on everything

still feels kind of fake also I keep

hearing movement voices below me maybe

another sofa maybe other survivors are

hiding there hmm

bedroom key locked okay though it

doesn't go there broken oh it's like a

wine room I can hear him coming down the

hallway I need to hide I don't know

where I know

I now know this is not an exit or a

resting place just in the specimen room

I think he's outside 200 I need to hide

can't no hide behind the boxes somehow

oh I can okay

it's gonna wait here then it's like

stalking music playing I don't know why

I'm like I'm annunciators music playing

your guys can hear it hopefully uh no no

we'll see

and where am I

where are you

oh he doesn't look that bad

I guess I'm hide by the boxes where are

you music stopped tonight can I get out

no no okay

well nothing's happening well nothing

happened

so mmm okay that was weird just like

nothing nothing at all locked okay just

go oh hey there's peppers can you get

they can't get the peppers okay then

okay

can I go up here I can you know I

somehow managed to get away but I don't

know for how long I hear him even though

I know he's not there it's like he isn't

even real but instead my own fears

manifesting themselves and stalking me

who can I hide in here okay so I guess

you can only hide in rooms that he

stalks you in what about this one hmm oh

yeah he's definitely outside this room

up yep there we go

aha yeah yeah it does this isn't too bad

it's a lot like amnesia or um out last

two plots are hiding from homie from the

guy in the closet so does get me as I

could do that that's no problem I can't

do that part of a Z

well that whatever and still super

creepy though

how like you doing this myself I don't

know I keep playing horror games like

this I mean they're fun don't get me

wrong they're fun but it's just foul now

is it get me all antsy oh he said he

heard me maybe I should look around

first oh is a key point cool

hey it said that when I did the thing

the other place see this door was locked

right yeah okay hey another key Boop

it looks like it's missing something

so another like book around here no okay

we're just another locked room there was

another locker room like right across

the hallway right crash y'all yes let's

oh I need to find a place to hide oh not

in there behind in boxes yes okay why

would I hide the v8 oh look hi poppy I

know you'll never fight you there just

wait for him to run around the room

good thing I'm super short

he'll never find us here

now you don't I'm whispering you don't

hear me at all okay so now that was a

book and it's like a fake book or

whatever so I can put this in the

bookcase I'm fair eh my nose and we'll

be moving on oh yeah oh yeah okay well

let's go okay okay okay all the bones

and and they're all like turning towards

me I have a theory I think it's the

pseudo mansion I think it's the pseudo

mansion I think it's playing with my

head I still hear him I must find that

man to kill him with a sickle I found in

the forest watch the axe I don't wanna

kill anybody to go Oh Plus somebody

actually commented on one of my videos

one of these videos and said um said

that the less you swing the axe or

something obviously outside of like

break having to break down doors and

stuff you'll get like a good ending or

whatever on them

Oh exit key exit key that's good I hide

in here because it definitely sounds

like he's coming

oh hey I'm not in here

don't worry boo he walked right in front

of it there's lots of dust and dirt down

you I wonder if it's like a one-shot

kill if you get you whoa hey I kinda

don't want to risk it like I don't want

to get out and him be like ah get me no

I'm not in here but neither are you so

it's cool it's cool

odd place dude this freakin freakin

freakin and it's okay we got this we're

going gone don't do it oh okay oh boy oh

boy oh boy oh boy oh will run run run

run run run everyone well just go just

go just go just go just go just go just

go it's gonna be okay give me okay run

run run run and run run run run oh boy

oh boy oh boy oh no oh no oh so he can't

chase me now for the rest of the floors

assuming such gotta run as fast as I can

don't go go go go go that was him

doesn't go go go go go go go go go go go

go stop getting caught on the walls and

stuff you get caught on the walls you

get stuck on the walls so easy in this

game something's gonna jump out like

right now it's okay its okay its okay

its okay its okay its okay its okay its

okay its okay its okay we're gonna be

okay

gonna be okay gonna be we're gonna be

good we're gonna be good candy candy you

got this you got this we can survive

fool we can make it

you can make it really good hurry back

music ah it's okay it's okay

well no go go go go go go go go go go go

go

the music stopped

so am I still being chased I don't know

I feel like the only alright I feel like

I need to wait for the puppet music or

the other guy music the infected dudes

like the alien parasite be there and

then and that's where I would have to

like pay attention and stop like

sprinting as fast as I can to just do

I'm glad to and catch me in this room

you would have got me there we go

so I don't think you shaved me anymore I

don't think he is chasing me anymore but

I still have a good 67 floors to go Oh

CYBERPUNK 2077 NEWS UPDATE!! [May 2017] - Duration: 3:43.

Greetings earthlings!

Welcome to the MadqueenShow

I am your host, the Madqueen

And Mr Ruvver

On today's menu, we have recent and important news for you regarding the upcoming

video game Cyberpunk 2077

Four years have passed after the first teaser of Cyberpunk 2077 was released and without

a single word from CD Project Red regarding the status of the project, except saying that

"it will be ready when is ready"

That equals to not saying absolutely anything

In a conference call regarding their financial results for the first quarter of this year,

the CEO of CD Projeckt Red Marcin Kicinsky broke the silence regarding Cyberpunk 2077

and said: "The promotional campaign is already planned.

It's main element is the surprise, so I cannot even say when it will begin.

Simply because it has to come as a surprise."

Oh, fuck you!

Actually nobody really knows If the surprise if going to be that they are going to finally

announce it on the E3 next month, even though they already stated that this year was the

year of Gwent, and given that the game has just hit Public Beta, it's more likely that

the presentation of E3 will revolve around the Witcher spin-off

Is it also called Spin off in videogames?

I don't know, but I'm sure people know what I mean.

More pessimistic approaches believe that most probably we will have to wait until a downtime

when not many big AAA video games are nabbing headlines, and this would mean around December

or January, but truth is that we don't know yet if there are going to be more games around

these dates If surprise is the strategy and they already

planned it wouldn't be really funny that, surprise!

They wait until December and they have to compete with another big title that's not been announced yet

Exactly

That's why a reasonable bet would be the middle of summer, which is traditionally known as

a dry season for videogames releases

This way they will have ALL our attention

Regardless, it seems that the wait continues, but is good news to know that the promotional

campaign is already planned because that means that the development is really advanced

Actually that's not a guess, Kicinsky stated so in the same conference call

But as they are also working on another mysterious game at the same time they're developing Cyberpunk

2077 and Gwent

Witcher 4

Yep, you wish.

The story of Geralt is done, but they seem to love the setting so go figure

No information yet regarding the new project, but let's hope that it doesn't interfere with

Cyberpunk and we don't have to wait a lot to see it finally done

Censoring You To Protect You - tech and science - Duration: 8:10.

Censoring You To "Protect" You

The editor of The Vanguard at Portland State University decided that it was more important

to cover up a story than to break it, more important to evade truths than to expose them,

and more important to treat students -- and the wider world -- as children rather than

thinking sentient adults able to make up their own minds.

That students such as Andy Ngo exist is reason for considerable optimism.

So long as there are even a few people left who are willing to ask the questions that

need asking and willing to tell people about the answers they hear -- however uncomfortable

they may seem right now -- all cannot possibly be lost.

Indeed, it is imaginable, that with examples such as this, students in America could be

reminded not only that truth will always triumph over lies, but that the current trend of ignorance

and censorship might one day soon begin to be turned around.

In the culture-wars currently rocking US campuses, the enemies of free speech have plenty of

tools on their side.

Many of these would appear to be advantages.

For instance the employment of violence, thuggery and intimidation against those who disagree

are generally effective ways to prevent people hearing things you do not want them to hear.

As are the subtler but more regularly employed tactics for shutting people down, such a "no-platforming"

people or getting them disinvited after they have been invited, should the speaker's views

not accord 100% with those of their would-be censors.

As also noted in this space before, many of the people who campaign to limit what American

students can learn also have the short-term advantage of being willing to lie without

compunction and cover over facts whenever they emerge.

The important point here, however, is that word "short-term".

In the long run, those who wish to cover over a contrary opinion, or even inconvenient facts,

are unlikely to succeed.

Adults tend to be capable of more discernment and initiative than the aspirant-nannies believe

them to be, and the effects will always tend to show.

Take, for example, events in Portland, Oregon, last month.

In April, a gathering took place at the Portland State University.

The occasion was billed as an interfaith panel and was given the title, "Challenging Misperceptions."

As this is an era when perceptions, as well as misperceptions, of religion are perhaps

unusually common, there might be some sense in holding such a discussion, even in the

knowledge that it is likely to be hampered -- as interfaith get-togethers usually are

-- by the necessity of dwelling on things that do not matter and focussing attention

away from all things that do.

Thus, by the end of an average interfaith event, it can generally be agreed upon that

there are certain dietary laws that certain religions have in common, some agreement on

the existence of historical figures and an insistence that religion is the answer to

most problems of our world.

Fortunately, at Portland, there were some people in the audience who appear to have

been happy to avoid this sort of boilerplate.

A young woman raised her hand and asked the Muslim student on the panel about a specific

verse in the Koran which would appear to approve killing non-Muslims (Possible verses might

have included Qur'an: 8:12; 22:19-22; 2:191-193; 9.5; 9:29).

The Muslim student replied:

"I can confidently tell you, when the Koran says an innocent life, it means an innocent

life, regardless of the faith, the race, like, whatever you can think about as a characteristic."

This had the potential to develop into an interesting, or at the very least, an interestingly

evasive answer.

And so a young student there, named Andy Ngo, who also worked for the university's student

newspaper, The Vanguard, got out his phone and began recording.

The Muslim student on the panel went on to say:

"And some, this, that you're referring to, killing non-Muslims, that [to be a non-believer]

is only considered a crime when the country's law, the country is based on Koranic law that

means there is no other law than the Koran.

In that case, you're given the liberty to leave the country, you can go in a different

country, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it.

So you can go in a different country, but in a Muslim country, in a country based on

the Koranic laws, disbelieving, or being an infidel, is not allowed so you will be given

the choice [to leave]."

All of this is an admirably more complete answer than tends to be given at such affairs.

All of this is also theologically strong.

Speaking about the attitudes of the Islamic faith towards apostasy a few years ago, no

less an authority than Yusuf al-Qaradawi said that if Muslims had got rid of the punishments

for apostasy, "Islam would not exist today".

It is a striking admission, and one which would appear to suggest an awareness that

the religion's innate appeal is not as great as is often alleged.

The young reporter who captured this segment of video proceeded to share it on his Twitter

account.

This is the sort of thing journalists often do if they are at a public event and someone

says something of interest.

The alternatives (that journalists hope never to attend anything interesting, or attend

events that are interesting but choose to keep their discoveries private) are not models

for success in the profession.

In the days immediately following the event, a couple of websites picked up the story.

Shortly afterwards, Andy Ngo was called in for a meeting at his student newspaper and

told by the editor-in-chief that his behaviour was "predatory" and "reckless" and that he

had put the life of the Muslim student and that student's family at risk.

So far as anyone knows, nothing has happened to either the Muslim student or his family.

Despite much flame-fanning by "Defenders of Minorities", America does not seem to be in

the middle of a lynching season for religious minorities, even though these moralists often

appear to wish it otherwise.

Nevertheless, "health and safety" and "minimising harm" are, as Mark Steyn has observed, the

new "shut up".

Where once someone would invite you just to "shut up", today they can appeal to the possibility

that a non-existent lynch-mob might show up to murder anyone whose cause the censor of

the day happens to be trying to protect.

At any rate, while the Muslim student and his family are, of course, fine, the young

journalist who reported his words was fired.

The editor of The Vanguard at Portland State University decided that it was more important

to cover up a story than to break it, more important to evade truths than to expose them,

and more important to treat Portland students -- and the wider world -- as children rather

than thinking adults able to make up their own minds.

The account of The Vanguard is a typical display of student cowardice and American academic

dishonour.

The report, nevertheless, should also stand as a demonstration of American hope.

That students such as Andy Ngo exist is reason for considerable optimism.

So long as there are even a few people left who are willing to ask the questions that

need asking and willing to tell people about the answers they hear -- however uncomfortable

they may seem right now -- all cannot possibly be lost.

Indeed, it is imaginable, that with examples such as his, students in America could be

reminded not only that truth will always triumph over lies, but that the current trend of ignorance

and censorship might one day soon begin to be turned around.
