A load of time has gone by since we've
had a load, so we'll load up this review
with a load.
It's the Mammoet Generator Load Set by
Weiss Brothers. It's a big box in the
famous red and black, and to get the
model out we'll try the Cranes Etc
patented automatic ejection process. The
interior packaging is two large expanded
polystyrene trays and they're factory
sealed, so it's slice and dice with a
knife and then we can lift the lid, and
inside are the various parts, and they are
protected by soft paper, but you can't
just lift the generator out, not because
it's heavy, but it's secured to the base
so you need to whip out your screwdriver
and undo the screws in the bottom. Once
you've done that the generator is freed
up and you can lift it out of the tray.
Out of the box the generator load does
come with a couple of support legs which
are screwed to it, so to suspend it
properly as a load we need to remove
those and once again it's a job for a
nifty wrist and a screwdriver.
With the support legs taken off it
doesn't quite sit level on the floor. To
lift the load requires some rigging and
that includes beams, straps and shackles
and the large shackles are a nice part,
they are die cast with screw in bolts. There
are no assembly instructions included
with the model and it would have been
nice if there had been at least a simple
line diagram, but having said that it's
not difficult to work out where the
parts go, and of course if you get the
model, and you ever can't remember, then
just look at this video again. Here we're
attaching the first of the nylon rope
slings to the lifting beam, and you just
repeat that process a number of times.
Once you've done that you can attach the
rigging to a crane and this is what the
arrangement should look like. You should
end up with 4 nylon web stings which
are ready to attach to the load and here
we see the load waiting patiently for a
pickup. It is a big load so you do need a
big crane to lift it realistically and
here we're lowering the lifting tackle
ready to attach it to the load. Once it's
all connected up and the load is lifted
this is what it looks like.

The lifting beams are metal and they're nicely
formed with very sharp graphics and the
lifting shackles are very realistic as
are the web slings and rope slings. The
generator load is a large part made in
various grades of plastic and overall
it's robustly made. There are various
graphics all around the model and some
of them are very small and sharp. On very
close inspection it even appears that
the original generator set was made by
Weiss Brothers.
When Cranes Etc visited
China at the end of 2016, the generator
sets were seen on the production line.
After preparation and painting the
various parts are glued together, and all
of this work is carried out by hand. To
get the glue in the right places a
syringe is used
and that stops the glue flooding
everywhere once the parts are fitted. There are
a large number of graphics on the model
and these were all applied by hand and
it's a job for a steady nerve and good
eye sight. Once the graphic is in place
fine adjustments can be done to make it
look right, and then the application can
be finished off. Here we see some of the
fully assembled generator sets and after
being made they go to the packaging
section and here we see one being loaded
into its tray, and then it's fully
secured at the bottom.
Let's start off by getting out the
Cranes Etc weighbridge and seeing how
much the whole kit and kaboodle weighs.
The giant hand crane places it down
expertly and we've recorded a weight of
1.25 kilograms and actually that scales
up to 156 tons which is rather heavier
than the lifting beams would indicate, so
whatever you do make sure you've got a
big enough crane to lift up this load.
This is an impressive accessory set from
Weiss Brothers and it provides a number
of different posing opportunities. It is
a well made part and it's nicely
detailed with graphics, and it certainly
looks impressive hanging from a crane.
It's not a cheap model and overall it's
good enough to rate as very good.
