How to Plan and Teach a Workshop - Duration: 7:46.

Hey gang!

Drex here from DrexFactor.com and I'm here for those of you planning to teach workshops

at a fire or flow festival this season and are curious how to go about doing it.

I've been teaching workshops now for about 7 years and in that time I've learned a

lot of what to do and a whole heaping plate of what not to do in order to create the best

learning experience for you and your students.

To that end, I'm going to serve up some of my best practices and tips to help you

get the most out of your own workshops.

Please note: a lot of this is to the taste of the individual teacher.

There are some things that are going to be a good fit for you and others that aren't.

Stick to what resonates for you rather than trying to create a carbon copy of what I've

described here.

Before we dive in, I just want to take a moment to give a shout out to the friends of the

Now on with the show!

Most of the work for teaching a class or workshop happens before a single student shows up or

a single word comes out of your mouth.

It's always a good practice to prepare a lesson plan to organize your thoughts and

give your students at least a little bit of structure to work with.

This doesn't have to be a term paper--sometimes just a rough outline will do, so you know

what you want to hit up and the order you want to hit it up in.

A great lesson is like telling a story: one idea leads to the next, building upon each

other and drawing connections between different things to create a picture for your students.

When I prepare a lesson plan, I start by defining goals for my workshop.

I try to limit myself to accomplishing no more than 3 goals per workshop because otherwise

I find the workshop to become too busy and unfocused.

For example, in my Art of Prop Performance class I walk in with the following three goals:

Get students to think of their choreography as conveying a story or emotional impression

Correct bad performance habits Make the class as physically interactive and

engaging as possible

These 3 goals, then, become something of a mission statement that helps me determine

what goes into my class and what doesn't.

I'll then outline my class in such a way that it supports these 3 goals.

Here's what that looks like:

The class starts off with a 5-minute warmup to get bodies moving and minds alert.

Then we go into 3 exercises centered around different ideas in movement art that flow

artists almost always neglect.

And finally, have everyone in the class write a haiku about their favorite childhood toy

that they then translate into a movement phrase to perform for the rest of the class.

You'll note: there isn't necessarily a 1 to 1 correlation between each of the sections

of this class and each of my 3 goals, but those 3 goals do guide how I tackle each of

these sections of the class.

I structure it this way because I want the lessons learned from the movement exercises

to have an impact on the final piece everyone in the class writes.

Again, just like in a story your class should be structured such that if this, then that

must inevitably happen.

Make your students see the connections between your ideas and concepts.

Now how much information should you be squeezing into your outline?

That's a really, really tough question and one that I find is better suited to refinement

than making estimates at the get-go.

Try and put in the least amount of information you think you need to cover the topic and

we'll get into refining this a bit later.

Off the top of my head, though, if it's longer than a single page in your notebook

it's probably too long.

One quick note on materials needed for a class: you can never guarantee that a festival can

provide you with anything, so make sure you're in a position to deliver it yourself if it's

absolutely necessary.

For this movement class, I bring a set of bluetooth speakers with me in case the festival

can't provide a sound system.

So you've showed up to the festival and your students are there--now what?

Well, the good news is that you've done a bit of prep so you're hopefully not just

left there hanging in the wind, but here are a couple things to keep in mind when it actually

comes down to teaching the workshop itself.

First, you have to talk loudly.

It's really tempting just to address the people in the front row, especially if you're

nervous.

But here's the thing: a bad workshop is not improved by being impossible to hear.

A great workshop, on the other hand, can be ruined if your students can't make out what

you're saying.

Talk to the back row at all times.

This will insure that you're projecting enough so that everyone can hear you.

Your front row won't feel slighted and your back row won't be straining to hear you.

Second, interact with your class.

Get them to move around.

Get them to speak to you.

The less directly engaged they are in the learning experience, the less engaged they

are in what they learn.

If you've got a class that's just standing there listening to you, you're going to

get 20 minutes tops before their minds will start to wander.

Doesn't matter how good the material is, this is just the human brain wandering from

lack of stimuli.

The more you get your students to directly engage in what their learning, the better.

Finally, the great question any workshop teacher must answer: do I split the class or not?

It's inevitable that you're going to get people of a variety of different experience

and skill levels walking into your class, so do you split them by experience and offer

a slightly different lesson to different people or do you give everyone the same lesson?

There is a wide, wide variety of opinions on this point but for me the answer is to

teach everyone the same lesson.

I've tried it both ways and I always feel like when I split a class that what winds

up happening is that I give several people more individualized instruction but the quality

of it isn't as good because my brain is working on several lessons simultaneously.

When I give a full group a single lesson it's much more focused and structured.

I know that when we have people in a class that are past the skill level we're aiming

for we get a little nervous and want to keep them engaged.

Honestly, I find that people more often will stick around for a solid and engaging lesson

even if it's something they already know how to do.

That said, tons of people that I respect and consider great teachers do split their classes.

See what you feel works best.

So you've taught your workshop--you're done, right?

Not so fast.

How do you know if your students had a positive experience or even if they learned the material?

The first thing I highly recommend is making doing a brief review of what you've covered

in class.

Ask the people in your class to get out their video cameras or cell phones as you do this

so they have the information to take home with them.

It's been scientifically proven that summarizing information like this at the end of a class

leads to greater retention--help those brains grow!

Next: collect feedback from your class.

This doesn't have to be immediate.

What I recommend is using Google Drive to create a submission form where people evaluate

the material the class covered, you as an instructor, and give you feedback as to which

parts of the class were the most and the least effective.

I have a template that I use for my own classes and I'll link to it down in the description

of this video for you to take a look at yourselves.

Bring a notebook with you to class and ask for people's email addresses.

Then send them an email--make sure all their addresses are BCCed--that includes a link

to that Google Form after they get back from the festival.

This kind of feedback is freaking awesome because it'll enable you to chart over time

the satisfaction of the people taking your classes, your effectiveness as a teacher,

and you'll often find that your students have great suggestions you may never have

thought of yourself.

If you've got a Facebook Fan Page, link to it in on the event page after the event

is done, thanking the people who attended your classes so they can follow your work

if they'd like to.

Cool, so you've taught your workshop and gotten feedback on it--now what?

Well, it's time to refine what you have and make it a better class.

You've taught the class and seen what you thought went well and what didn't.

Plus you have your students' feedback to work with, too.

Take a look at things that didn't go well.

Did your students single them out, too?

Maybe they should be cut in the future or maybe you should try to find a different way

to go about teaching them.

Did your lesson go too long?

Consider cutting one or two sections out.

You might be getting too ambitious in what you're trying to cover.

Hold onto the things your students really found rewarding if you can.

If not, maybe they can be spun off into a completely different workshop.

Teach and reteach your workshop to find what works and what doesn't.

I have a workshop I've been doing now for nearly 5 years and I'm still refining it.

As time goes on, people change and will walk into your classes with different levels of

preexisting knowledge.

Adapt to it to keep your workshop fresh.

I'm going to offer one more piece of advice when it comes to teaching workshops: take

other people's workshops.

Even if it's on a topic you already know.

Especially if it's on a topic you already know.

See what the teacher does and take notes.

What are the things they do well and the things they don't?

When do the students start to get restless and why.

Being a good teacher means assimilating as much of this information as you can.

You're not the source of all good or bad ideas.

See how other people work and it'll help you refine your own process.

THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE TWO BATON ROUGE POLICE OFFICERS WHO

WERE INVOLVED IN THE DEATH OF ALTON STERLING LAST YEAR.

BASICALLY, HE WAS SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES, EXCUSE ME, HE WAS SHOT

MULTIPLE TIMES, HE WAS IMMOBILE, THEY WERE PINNING HIM DOWN,

THEY CLAIMED HE HAD A GUN.

TAKE A LOOK AT THE VIDEO HERE.

GET ON THE GROUND!!

[GUNSHOTS]

SHOTS FIRED, SHOTS FIRED.

SO THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT SAID THEY WILL NOT BE BRINGING

CHARGES TO THOSE TWO POLICE OFFICERS, AND BY THE POLICE

ACCOUNT, OFFICERS BLANE SALAMONI AND HOWIE LAKE SAW STERLING, 37,

OUTSIDE A CONVENIENCE STORE IN JULY AFTER IT WAS REPORTED THAT

A MAN HAD THREATENED SOMEONE THERE WITH A GUN.

STERLING, WHO WAS SELLING CDS, THAT THIS AND OF THE MAN.

BOTH OFFICERS HAD BODY CAMERAS, BUT THE CAMERAS WERE

REPORTEDLY DISLODGED.

THE US DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE WILL NOT PRESS CIVIL CHARGES

AGAINST THE OFFICERS INVOLVED IN THE SHOOTING, WHICH LEAVES IT UP

TO LOCAL CHARGES.

OBVIOUSLY AFTER THE SHOOTING, THE VIDEO WENT VIRAL, THERE

WERE A LOT OF PROTESTS IN THE COMMUNITY AROUND THE

CONVENIENCE STORE, AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

SO OFFICIALS ARE FEARING THAT THIS NEWS THAT THEY ARE NOT

GOING TO PRESS CHARGES MIGHT HAVE CONSEQUENCES IN THE SIMILAR

VEIN, WHERE PROTESTS WERE ñ WHERE PROTESTS WILL ERUPT.

A LOT OF SCHOOLS ARE NOTIFYING PARENTS OF THEIR PLAN, IF

PROTESTS DO ERUPT, IN BATON ROUGE.

THE CASE WILL BE THE FIRST TIME UNDER ATTORNEY GENERAL JEFF

SESSIONS THAT THE DEPARTMENT HAS PUBLICLY DECLINED TO

PROSECUTE OFFICERS INVESTIGATED FOR POSSIBLE WRONGDOING IN

A HIGH-PROFILE CASE.

THIS ISN'T A SURPRISE, SINCE SESSIONS HAS ALSO OFFERED A

TACIT ENDORSEMENT OF WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE FERGUSON EFFECT,

WHICH REFERS TO THE CONTESTED IDEA THAT POLICE MIGHT BE AFRAID

TO GET OUT OF THEIR CARS AND ENFORCE THE LAW FOR FEAR OF

ENDING UP ON A VIRAL VIDEO.

NOW, OBVIOUSLY THIS IS AWFUL.

THAT VIDEO IS HORRENDOUS, AND NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU HAVE

SEEN IT I THINK IT SHAKES YOU TO YOUR CORE, AND I THINK THIS IS

JUST ANOTHER INSTANCE OF OUR GOVERNMENT TELLING PEOPLE THAT

BLACK LIVES DON'T MATTER, AND THIS IS REALLY UNFORTUNATE,

AND SORT OF GIVING A GO-AHEAD FOR POLICE TO MAKE THESE

SPLIT DECISIONS WITHOUT FACING ANY REAL REPERCUSSIONS.

YEAH, IT SUCKS.

JEFF SESSIONS IS SOMEONE THAT I PERSONALLY DO NOT WANT IN CHARGE

OF DICTATING THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENDA OF THE ENTIRE

NATION, AND YET THIS IS THE FIRST TIME HE HAS HAD TO

FACE THIS KIND OF DECISION.

HE HAS MORE COMING DOWN THE PIKE, ERIC GARNER, TAMIR

RICE, AND THERE WAS A 15-YEAR-OLD KID IN DALLAS

WHO GOT SHOT BY THE POLICE, AND THE POLICE CHANGED THEIR STORY.

THAT WAS THE SAME THING, WHEN YOU LOOK AT A STORY LIKE

THIS THAT IS SWIRLING AROUND IN THE ETHER AND YOU THINK,

WHAT CAN I DO?

KEEP UP THE PRESSURE ON SOCIAL MEDIA, TAKE TO THE STREETS

AND MARCH, I MEAN THERE HAVE BEEN SPONTANEOUS MARCHES

TODAY BECAUSE OF THIS.

AND I GENUINELY DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW ñ I MEAN, LOOK, LET ME START

OFF BY SAYING THIS: WE TALK ABOUT WHAT PRIVILEGE SOMETIMES,

HOW IT'S ALMOST LIKE A TRIGGER WORD FOR A LOT OF ALT-RIGHT

PEOPLE WHO HATE WATCH OUR SHOW, BUT THE REALITY IS, JEFF

SESSIONS IS NEVER GOING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT'S LIKE FOR A

BLACK CITIZEN TO WALK THE STREETS, AND HOW FEARFUL THEY

ARE OF POLICE OFFICERS, BECAUSE JEFF SESSIONS IS AN OLD WHITE

GUY WHO IS KIND OF RACIST, GREW UP IN A SMALL TOWN

PROBABLY, AND HE DIDN'T HAVE TO EXPERIENCE THAT SORT OF SYSTEMIC

RACISM AT ALL IN ANY POINT OF HIS LIFE, SO THAT'S WHAT HE

CAN LOOK AT THIS ISSUE AND THINK OF IT FROM A POLICE PERSPECTIVE.

BUT THE REALITY IS ñ AND WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THIS OVER AND OVER

AND OVER AGAIN ñ THERE'S JUST SIMPLY NO ACCOUNTABILITY, AND IF

WE ARE COSTLY TALK ABOUT THE ARGUMENT OF WHETHER THIS IS A

BLACK LIVES MATTER VERSUS ALL LIVES MATTER ARGUMENT, RATHER

THAN JUST THIS DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICES, AND EXCESSIVE

USE OF FORCE THAT LEADS TO THE DEATHS OF UNARMED BLACK

PEOPLE AT A RATE THAT IS FIVE TIMES HIGHER THAN WHITE

PEOPLE, THERE IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT WE NEED TO

TALK ABOUT, BUT INSTEAD WE ARE JUST TALKING ABOUT THE ARGUMENT.

I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT, IT IS EXCESSIVE FORCE, AND YOU

CAN TELL THAT FROM THE VIDEO, AND CONSTITUTIONALLY THERE

ARE ACTUALLY TWO INSTANCES WHERE POLICE CAN USE EXCESSIVE

FORCE AND SHOOT TO KILL.

FOR CIRCUMSTANCES TO PROTECT THEIR LIFE OR THE LIFE OF

ANOTHER INNOCENT PARTY, AND THE SECOND CIRCUMSTANCE IS TO

PREVENT A SUSPECT FROM ESCAPING, BUT ONLY IF THE OFFICER HAS

PROBABLE CAUSE TO THINK THAT THE SUSPECT POSES A DANGEROUS

THREAT.

NOT DO.

THEY HAD TO REACH INTO THE GUY'S CARGO SHORT POCKET TO GET THE

"GUN," BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE END OF THE

VIDEO, HE REACHES INTO HIS POCKET AND PULLED OUT SOME SORT

OF ñ ARTICLE, SUPPOSEDLY THEY GONE, AND IF A POLICE OFFICER

WAS TO MAKE THAT ARGUMENT, I WOULD THINK THAT THE GUN WOULD

HAVE TO BE OUT, AND ñ OR THAT HE WAS ABLE TO REACH FOR IT EASILY.

I THINK WHAT HAPPENED IS, THEY HAD HIM PINNED DOWN, AN OFFICER

DISCOVERED A GUN, YELLED HE HAS A GUN, ANYBODY LOST THEIR SHIT

AND ESCALATED IT, EVEN THOUGH OWNING A GUN IN BATON ROUGE

IS LEGAL.

AND WHETHER IT WAS THE ONE COP HITTING THE OTHER COP WITH HIS

GUN WHILE HE WAS DIRECTLY HOLDING DOWN THIS MAN.

GO AHEAD.

THE LEGAL AMBIGUITY IS WHAT,

ESSENTIALLY THE CRUX OF THE

ISSUE.

IT IS LEGAL AMBIGUITY, YOU CAN'T TELL IF THE OFFICER

GENUINELY FELT THREATENED, OR IF THE OFFICER GENUINELY

THOUGHT THAT THIS PERSON WAS WHEN YOU POSE A THREAT TO

OTHERS IF THEY ESCAPED.

SO, THAT IS A MASSIVE PART OF THIS PROBLEM, IS THAT IT IS

WRITTEN INTO THE LEGISLATION.

BUT WHAT I'M SAYING IS, WE DON'T HAVE ANY SORT OF ACCOUNTABILITY.

WE DON'T HAVE BODY CAMS FOR ALL UNITS, AND EVEN IF WE DID,

THEY STILL GET DISLODGED, OR PRECINCTS WILL HOLD ONTO

THE FOOTAGE UNTIL THEY DEEM THEY CAN RELEASE CERTAIN PARTS OF IT.

THAT HAPPENS PRETTY FREQUENTLY.

WITHOUT ANY LAYER OF ACCOUNTABILITY, WITHOUT

INDEPENDENT REVIEW BOARDS, FOR EXAMPLE, WITHOUT ANY SORT OF NEW

EDUCATION, WITHOUT INCLUSIVITY, THIS PROBLEM IS GOING TO

CONTINUE TO PERSIST.

YEAH.

AND THE FEDERAL LEVEL IS THE HOPE, BECAUSE A LOT OF TIMES, IF

IT GOES BACK TO THE SAME REGION WHERE THESE POLICE OFFICERS COME

FROM, THEN THE ATTORNEYS THAT THESE POLICE OFFICERS DEAL WITH

EVERY DAY, IN ORDER TO, IN MANY CASES DEAL WITH EVERY DAY IN

ORDER TO PROSECUTE WHAT THE POLICE OFFICERS HAVE ARRESTED ñ

IT'S A LAW AND ORDER, THERE'S THE POLICE OFFICERS, AND THEN

THE LAWYERS, THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY, SO THERE IS AN

INHERENT POSSIBLE CONFLICT OF INTEREST, BECAUSE THESE

PEOPLE HAVE TO WORK WITH EACH OTHER, HAVE WORKED WITH

EACH OTHER BEFORE, AND HAVE TO AFTER.

NOW, IT'S NOT OVER, THIS IS NOT SAID AND DONE, WHILE THE FEDERAL

JUSTICE SYSTEM HAS DECIDED THEY ARE NOT GOING TO PURSUE IT, IT

GOES BACK TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT, SO THERE IS ANOTHER

ROUND WHERE THIS COULD POTENTIALLY FIND THE KIND OF

SOLUTION THAT A LOT OF US ARE LOOKING FOR.

AND ONE MORE THING ABOUT THE ACCOUNTABILITY: THE LOGIC

THAT IS USED BY JEFF SESSIONS, AND OTHER LAW AND ORDER

JUSTICE ADVOCATES WHO SAY THAT THERE ñ WHEN THEY ARE

SAYING, WE DON'T WANT TO HOLD THE POLICE ACCOUNTABLE,

YOUR ARGUMENT ALL DAY, EVERY DAY IS, WE NEED HIGHER PUNISHMENTS

FOR CRIMINALS TO DETER THEM FROM DOING NEGATIVE ACTS.

AND SO YOU NEED TO HAVE THE SAME KIND OF ACCOUNTABILITY FOR LAW

JAB IN, AND THE INTERVIEWER TOOK IT KINDLY, AND COLBERT IS

LIKE, I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT KINDLY, I'M GOING TO GIVE

YOU WHAT YOU DESERVE.

SO I THINK THAT'S EVEN MORE SATIRICAL FOOTING, I'M

TWICE 2016 - TWICE's "Cheer Up" Makes A Sensational Comeback On Music Charts - Duration: 1:28.

A little over three months since its release on April 25, TWICE's "Cheer Up" has climbed its way back into the top rankings of various music charts.

As of July 31, "Cheer Up" has notably marked third place the last two days on the Genie and Monkey3 music charts, solidifying its impressively long run.

Fine dust is not the only thing causing weather-related headaches in Korea, as it gets warmer, we

also have to watch for ozone density.

An ozone advisory was issued yesterday for the second time so far this year.

It can damage lung tissue, cause respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Experts say it's best to stay indoors and use public transportation.

Today's highs will be couple of notches lower than yesterday, getting up to 27 degrees Celsius

in the capital, Gwangju and Daejeon.

More clouds are expected today.

We can expect some relief from the unseasonably hot temperatures with evening rain in store

on Jeju Island before spreading to other southern regions by tonight then the rest of the country

will see sprinkles tomorrow which is Children's Day.

The rain will hopefully ease the dryness in the air...also readings will head back to

what we would normally expect at this time of the year.

Korea's current account surplus narrows in March - Duration: 2:04.

South Korea's current account surplus contracted in March,... due to a widened deficit in its

service balance.

This comes on the back of a sharp decline in Chinese tourists,... as well as a rise

in the number of Koreans traveling overseas.

Kim Min-ji reports.

Korea's current account surplus narrowed in March.

The Bank of Korea says the country logged a surplus of over five-point-nine billion

U.S. dollars -- extending the surplus streak for 61 straight months.

However, the March figure is down from over ten-point-five billion posted in the same

month last year.

The central bank attributed the contraction to an expansion in Korea's services balance

deficit.

The deficit came to three-point-two-seven billion dollars in March -- three times larger

than the deficit a year earlier.

This was due mainly to a decline in Chinese tourists as well as a rise in Koreans taking

overseas trips.

The number of Chinese tourists tumbled over 40 percent on-year in March,... after Beijing

banned the sale of tour packages to Korea -- in apparent retaliation against Seoul's

deployment of a U.S. missile defense system.

The number of Koreans who traveled to foreign countries jumped nearly 24 percent on-year

to over one-point-nine million.

Korea's goods account surplus came to nine-point-eight billion dollars,... down from 12-point-8 billion

last year,... as imports rose at a faster pace than exports.

The latest data comes after the U.S. did not label Korea a currency manipulator in its

April foreign exchange report.

Korea met only two out of three criteria to become a currency manipulator.

Seoul posted 28 billion dollars in goods surplus with the U.S. last year,... with its current

account surplus accounting for seven percent of the country's GDP.

It remains on a monitoring list.

The Korean government has vowed efforts to keep reducing its surplus with the U.S.,...

so as not to be designated in the next report in October.

U.S. ready to consider new North Korea sanctions if necessary: Tillerson - Duration: 2:19.

The United States has warned North Korea that it could face additional sanctions,... if

Pyongyang's actions warrant it.

It also called for countries to implement existing sanctions and warned of secondary

sanctions for anyone engaging in illegal business with the regime.

Park Ji-won has the details.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the United States will consider new sanctions

on North Korea... based on the regime's actions.

"We are preparing additional sanctions if it turns out North Korea's actions warrant

additional sanctions.

We are hopeful that the regime in North Korea will think about this and come to a conclusion

that there's another way to the future."

Speaking at the State Department on Wednesday,.. Tillerson also warned that Washington could

impose secondary sanctions on those involved in illegal business dealings with Pyongyang.

That means Chinese firms engaged with the North could be hit with punitive measures.

The top U.S. diplomat also called on the international community to fully implement existing UN sanctions

against North Korea... and sent a very strong message to the North Korean regime.

"So we're trying to be very, very clear and resolute in our message to them: That your

future security and economic prosperity can only be achieved through your following your

commitments to denuclearize."

His remarks come as the U.S. Congress plans to vote on a bipartisan bill this week...

that would impose a new set of sanctions on North Korea,... including measures to shut

off the regime's access to overseas funds... to curb its ability to use the money for its

nuclear and weapons programs.

Meanwhile, the Chinese foreign ministry said Wednesday that Beijing will implement additional

sanctions, as outlined in UN Security Council resolution 2321.

The resolution states that the international community will respond to future North Korean

nuclear and missile tests with stronger measures.

The ministry added, however, that a peaceful resolution is the only realistic approach.
