This is a very important, basic point for terrarium owners.
You use these to measure the climate, to find out if it is warm enough and if the air humidity is correct.
The most important thing is to know what you need in the terrarium.
In a purely desert terrarium all you need to do is put in a thermometer.
In that case the hygrometer, which measures air humidity, is not important,
because in desert terrariums the air humidity is so low that you don't need to measure it.
So all you need is the thermometer.
In all other terrariums you usually use a thermo-hygrometer
to measure temperature and air humidity.
An important point: in my tropical terrarium I want the highest possible air humidity.
You can monitor this with this one. Is the humidity really 60, 70 or 80%?
The hygrometer is needed for this.
When you construct your terrarium and want to place the thermo-hygrometer in it,
do not just go and hang it straight away on the wall or in a corner
on the principle: that's a good place; I'll hang my thermo-hygrometer there.
This is nonsense, because I want to know the temperature not only in this corner,
but in the whole terrarium.
The specifications recommend terrarium temperatures of between 29 and 32 degrees, for example.
So I want to check whether these are the temperatures in my terrarium.
I have already said, between 29 and 32 degrees does not mean that I set the temperature at 29 to save electricity.
It means that you should have a range of temperature zones in the terrarium.
Coldest corner 29 degrees, warmest corner 32 degrees.
Then there are other extreme zones, under the radiant heater, the heating mat or the heat panel.
Possibly it is even 40 degrees in these zones
But when we talk of temperature zones of between 28 and 32 degrees, we mean: coldest corner 28, warmest 32, exceptions under the radiant heater.
Therefore do not fix it into place to start with, because then it will hang on the wall and you cannot measure anything. You take the device
and try it out. Put it first in one corner, and then in another; place it high up, then low down.
Do this for the first one to two weeks, and then you will be sure that the climate in the terrarium is correct.
If you do not change any of the technical aspects, then nothing will change in the various temperature zones.
Then you can fix it somewhere, because now it is only a monitor
in case some of the technology goes wrong.
If it is hanging on the wall and regularly shows 23.3 degrees and suddenly it shows only 20 degrees,
then I know, whoops, the device has gone wrong or a heating element in the terrarium has failed.
The same goes for the air humidity. If it suddenly falls,
then something is wrong or for some reason it has become too dry.
Then you need to react.
For this purpose it is enough to hang it always in the same place. Then you know that the temperature and the air humidity are normal.
Only when they change, do you need to act.
Another small point on hanging them up
Most of them now have sensors. If so, you can even attach the thermo-hygrometer to the outside, to the panel, for example.
Just hanging the sensor inside can be very practical, because then the device is not inside.
A slight disadvantage is that the reptiles like climbing around on the cables.
Therefore, lay it carefully, so that the animals cannot climb all over it and possible detach it.
That is the slight disadvantage of these cables.
Other practical ideas are this square one or this round one here.
They are designed to be clamped, like a clip.
They can be used with wood terraria, and also with glass terraria, but that is more difficult to cut.
I can cut a suitable hole in the terrarium and fix the thermometer in from the outside.
Then I always have the display facing outwards
and the sensing area is behind, inside the terrarium.
This is a simple solution, for I can then see from outside the values in the terrarium.
So much for fixing the devices in place, now a little about how they work
Here on the far right I have put a mechanical thermometer;
then we have here the digital thermometers, which are the most used at present.
The mechanical ones have been rather overtaken, because the digital ones are cheaper
and I think they are also rather more accurate.
The disadvantage: You have to put in batteries, but they last for 2-3 years,
so that's not bad.
Then there are infra-red thermometers like this one.
They only measure when there is movement.
If I press here I can read off the temperature, another great little item.
They are somewhat expensive, more expensive than any of the others here; they cost about 20 to 30 euros.
I use one of them and from time to time measure here and there in the terrarium.
I can also use it to check my thermometers, since it is more accurate.
I check to see if everything is working properly. If one shows a lower temperature, and I think it is not measuring correctly.
The sensors in them calcify over time
or they become clogged with dust and then they do not record the temperature as they did when new.
Then you can look to see whether a digital device like this shows the same temperature as the other one.
Therefore infra-red thermometers can be used to monitor.
Another point about calibration: The mechanical ones have a calibrating screw,
in this case on the back.
I can adjust it slightly. They function mechanically via a spring, which loses tension over time.
I can calibrate it backwards or adjust it
by comparing it with another thermometer.
There are also mechanical hygrometers and they can be calibrated too. I wrap it in a damp cloth.
It should display 90 to 95% air humidity
in the damp cloth and then I can adjust the calibrating screw.
I have to set it at 95%.
I have given you a brief explanation of calibration or touched on it.
So, every six months or every year check that your devices are working correctly.
Sometimes they become inaccurate and I think that the climate in the terrarium is not correct any more, although I have changed nothing.
So you must check whether the devices are still working correctly.
Last but not least, the price of a thermo-hygrometer can go from 2 to 200 euros.
Most of them cost about 10 euros; at that price you can get perfectly respectable devices.
It is a good idea not to buy on line, but in a shop.
There you can compare the temperatures displayed on the various devices.
If they all display a difference of 1 or 2 degrees, you know that they are not all wrong.
So you need to discover which one is correct, if they all show different temperatures.
If, for example, there are 10 all of the same model
and all 10 display the same temperature to within 0.1 - 0.3 degrees,
then that is a good model.
If the difference or the play between them is up to 0.5 degrees, that is really OK.
You can live with that. If my thermometer shows 30 degrees or 30.5 that's fine. That is the normal tolerance.
So, compare them with each other and if they all display more or less the same temperature, then that shows
that they work well.
So much for the thermo-hygrometer. It really is an important point for keeping reptiles.
Check the temperature in your terrarium and then your animals will be comfortable!
