ABC's hit dating competition show The Bachelor presents a lavish fantasy scenario where a
bevy of beautiful women vie for the attention and affection of one busy bachelor.
The heavily produced spectacle relies on plenty of behind-the-scenes secrets to keep the mega-popular
reality machine running — illusion-shattering insights the producers would probably prefer
viewers didn't know about.
Such as ...
Mi casa, su casa
The mansion where the Bachelor and the Bachelorette receive their suitors isn't just a set created
by ABC: the palatial house outside Los Angeles belongs to an actual family who rents their
home to the producers twice a year.
The semi-anonymous family moves their belongings out and stays in a hotel during taping.
According to Good Morning America, fans occasionally show up at the mansion hoping to catch a glimpse
of the cast.
The man who owns the house, known only as "Marshall," is a contractor who designed the
house along with his wife.
He's even been known to let fans take a swim in the family's pool.
Workout woes
No one can really fault the ladies on The Bachelor for wanting to look as good as they
can all the time.
Not only are they vying for the love and affection of the "man of their dreams," they have to
do so with millions of people watching them every week.
So it stands to reason that they'd want to stay fit.
But this is a little difficult to do, as Andi Dorfman from season 18 revealed to Women's
Health, saying, quote,"There isn't a workout room or any kind of equipment in the mansion.
So we had to improvise if we wanted to stay in shape.
We would run up and down a hill in the backyard and use whatever we could find in the house
as free weights.
It was pretty comical!"
Mock meals
When contestants sit down over elegant dinners for some one-on-one time, they're not always
allowed to touch that food.
Sean Lowe, the Bachelor from season 17, revealed in his book that,
"This was just for show.
No one looks good eating, and microphones pick up all kinds of chomping."
Don't worry though.
Contestants are fed, just off-camera.
Lowe says
"Before we went on the date, the producers sent food to our hotel rooms.
We ate in our rooms and then went out for dinner."
Ring fling
What happens to that enormous Neil Lane diamond ring if you decide the person you picked isn't
the one for you?
According to Entertainment Tonight, if you break up before the two-year mark of your
engagement, the ring goes back to production, not back to Lane.
For his part, the designer says he just hopes the romance of the rings last forever, telling
Stylecaster, quote, "Where the ring goes, I have to say, I don't really know.
I just say it goes to ring heaven."
Suite safety
Fans of The Bachelorette went bananas in 2015 when Kaitlyn Bristowe admitted to sleeping
with then-contestant Nick Viall, and questions arose about the attitude towards sex on both
shows.
What do we know about the nature of the sex being had in the Fantasy Suite?
Is it safe?
The answer is: yes, but not always ... if one former contestant is to be believed.
There were no condoms in the Fantasy Suite in 2012, according to Bachelor alum Courtney
Robertson, who explained, quote, "Everyone gets tested before the show" and she "was
on the pill."
If the Suite was indeed condom-free at one point, things have changed, according to the
show's host, Chris Harrison ...
"Always safe, yes.
Anything you need to have safe sex, we definitely promote that."
Bored in Bachelor-land
One season of The Bachelor takes around three months to film.
The cast is cut off from all forms of media, social and otherwise, and have no access to
books, cell phones, computers, or music.
Contestant Leslie Hughes says the only things she was allowed to keep were her journal and
her Bible.
In other words, your only entertainment in is you, your castmates, and lots of alcohol.
Olivia, a contestant on Season 20, says she and her fellow contestants were, quote, "bored
all day" and did beauty routines to pass the time.
"I think he keeps kissing the girls with a lot of lipstick, so I'm like … How's it
look?"
"The more lipstick the better?!"
