WHY HUMANS HAVE SUCH BIG BRAINS

BY ALEXA ERICKSONJULY

As the only creature on the planet that has outcompeted, interbred, and killed off all

other hominin species, many question how our intelligence allows for such world dominance.

To understand how the human brain maintains such intellect, capable of keeping us not

only alive and well, but also on top, we must know about the state of all 86 billion neurons

and their 100 trillion interconnections.

We would also need to know the different levels of strengths present for their connection,

and the state of the more than 10,000 proteins at each of these connection points.

That sounds like a lot.

But neurobiologist Steven Rose says thats still not enough, claiming we would also need

to know how these connections have evolved over a persons lifetime, and what the social

circumstances were.

But that could take centuries.

There is even a popular theory that our brains are similar to computers.

But as a Wired article pointed out:

Humans have been trying to understand the mind for millennia.

And metaphors from technologylike cortical CPUsare one of the ways that we do it.

Maybe its comforting to frame a mystery in the familiar.

In ancient Greece, the brain was a hydraulics system, pumping the humors; in the 18th century,

philosophers drew inspiration from the mechanical clock.

Early neuroscientists from the 20th century described neurons as electric wires or phone

lines, passing signals like Morse code.

And now, of course, the favored metaphor is the computer, with its hardware and software

standing in for the biological brain and the processes of the mind.

And so we are left with the understanding that humans have giant brains, but many of

its secrets remain a mystery.

Will there ever be a breakthrough?

Within the last few decades, more has been revealed about the pace and stages of brain

growth in humans.

Our brains quadruple in size within such little time, from birth to preschool.

And by the time we are six years old, our brains have reached 90% of their final size,

though this complex organ doesnt stop growing until our mid-20s.

But why so big?

It seems our environment has a lot to do with it.

Mark Maslin, Professor of Palaeoclimatology, UCL explained:

It is the detailed knowledge of society and the need to track and control the ever changing

relationship between people around us that has created our huge complex brain.

It seems our brains could be even more flexible that we previously thought.

Recent genetic evidence suggests the modern human brain is more malleable and is modelled

more by the surrounding environment than that of chimpanzees.

While the anatomy of the chimpanzee brain is controlled by their genes, the modern human

brain is largely shaped by the environment, regardless of genetics.

Essentially, we have pre-programmed brains that just know to be super flexible in order

to deal with environment and society.

This means that each new generations brain structure is a bit different than the last,

as it has adapted to its new world, specific environmental and social challenges included.

Destiny Weekly Reset, Perks, Bounties & Tips! - Week 149 - July 11 - 17 - Duration: 3:41.

Sup guys, today is Tuesday and you know what this means.

Destiny Reset Coverage by Anarionkayto from Anarionkayto's Gaming This.

Lets head off the bat and say this week looks promising for a couple of things.

I did my Voidwalker video last night giving a little in debth analysis of what we saw

on the reveal from IGN.

I'll see if tonight I can do the same with the Titan's Sentinel Subclass so make sure

you stay tuned to the channel cause there's still a lot to talk about before Beta release.

Now this week for Destiny, out with King's Fall, In with Wrath of the Machine with its

390 light Challenges, Voksis & Aksis.

A quick run of how to do this, for Voksis you have to make sure all 4 rooms are activated

before you kill him, no you don't need to do them two at a time or in two rounds, yes

all 4 rooms need to be activated prior to gunning down Voksis so you have a total of

5 rounds to pace yourself, or 3 rounds for try hards.

For Aksis the gameplay mechanics are a little bit more tricky, but most guardians already

have down their strats, so if you're empowered make sure you supercharge your platform before

Aksis gets stunned and empowerment shifts, 3 times per round and you should be good.

The Nightfall this week is the Fallen Saber Nightfall on Earth and the perks are Solar

Burn, Small Arms, Fresh Troops and Exposure.

Solar Burn and Small Arms combined can be a lethal dose of meltage with the Adept version

of the Vision of Confluence Scout Rifle and the Vex Mytholcast Fusion Rifle that you can

get from the Vault of Glass, or the Adept Pulse Rifle from King's Fall Smite of Merain.

Fresh Troops basically guarantees there will be more adds in groups, so kill 'em fast to

avoid getting melted yourself since Exposure pretty much makes sure you don't get your

shield regen.

There's a couple of ways you can work around the Exposure perk, for example if you use

a Titan you can go with Sunbreaker and activate the Cauterize subclass perk that enables you

to get regeneration, and it's Solar Damage so you can take advantage of that Solar Burn

perk.

Sunsinger on the Warlock pretty much does the same thing and even though it doesn't

take advantage of the Solar Burn perk, you can use the Bladedancer's Hungering Blade

perk on the Hunter to regenerate health if you need it.

For the weekly heroic the perks are Solanr Burn, Specialist and Fresh Troops.

Just equip your solar specials weapon of preference and go all out, the Weekly Crucible Playlist

is Combined Arms.

This is playlist is a combination of Control and Clash in bigger maps that allow you to

use vehicles and frequent heavy ammos as well as allowing you to use pikes and interceptors.

The bounties for Shaxx are a Game of Rift and Back to Basics.

Fun stuff for those that do that kind of things, both bounties require 7 matches completed

in either Rift or Clash respectively, 50 primary kills, 25 assisted kills and you need to stop

a runner while playing the Rift playlist, and get 25 ability kills on the Clash playlist

respectively to complete them and reap the rewards.

Challenge of the Elders has Juggler and Solar Burn perks with Melee Kills giving out more

points as the week's bonus perk.

So that's it for today guys, don't forget to leave a sub and hope you have a nice day

guardians... keept it safe... see ya!

Karina LeBlanc | Her Story - Duration: 0:59.

My head coach had said to me, "If you think your purpose

on this Earth is to kick a soccer ball for this country

then I've failed you"

I played for Canada for 18 years, it was the best job in the world,

I got to represent this entire country and play a sport

I absolutely love.

I remember standing on the podium and wearing that medal

and thinking there's got to be something more,

so I started to explore and I became a UNICEF ambassador.

All my difficulties in life, everything I had been through

was never about me, but it was to help inspire others.

I used to be the shy kid, nobody ever believes that,

but you couldn't tell me that I was relevant on this Earth

and sport taught me that I had a voice and my voice

was for a reason, so I'd say

find your voice and just be the best version of yourself.
