Hello, you gorgeous individuals, it's Kav here and today I'm going to be talking
about 27 HOURS by Tristina Wright. I don't have a physical copy of the book
to show you because I actually received an e-arc a few months ago and I was
really fortunate enough to receive this because it was such a great book and I'm
so glad and lucky that I was able to read it early and discover it and know
101% that I wanted to pre-order it for October and have the hardcover in my
hands when it comes out. For those of you who don't know - 27 HOURS is a story about
6 teens, kind of, on the run and it's a sci-fi novel, so these teens are
basically trying to save the day and they're much smarter than the adults are
honestly and it's extremely diverse, it's probably the most diverse cast I have
ever read about which is saying something, especially because it's in a
sci-fi novel and not a contemporary and one would presume that a contemporary
would have a more diverse cast than a sci-fi novel, but this cast is completely
diverse and the plot is incredible and the characters are incredible and it's
just so so good - I highly recommend pre-ordering it and if you stick with me
throughout this spoiler free review then you will hear all the different reasons
you should pre-order this and be on the lookout for this incredible novel. I
started out by pointing out the diversity of the cast which is a huge
requirement for me and this book did not just fulfill my expectations, but it
completely exceeded them. We have a multiracial, Indian and Portuguese,
bisexual main character, an afrolatinx bisexual trans girl, a fat pansexual
**Deaf Cuban girl, an asexual character, two gay characters, one
character who uses they/them pronouns - this story is definitely diverse if you
can't tell from all of those different diverse aspects of these characters and
I loved the intersectionality of the diversity - that's something that's so
important to me that I think I've put it out in a few of my more discussion type
videos recently, so I'm so glad this not only fulfilled that but, like I said,
exceeded that and the plot, characters, and writing continued to exceed all of
my expectations. I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi, but the plot of this novel was so
interesting, it didn't really feel like I was reading such heavy sci-fi - it was a
little bit harder for me to read than, say, a contemporary, but it wasn't so hard
that I had to put it down - I ended up giving this book 5 out of 5 stars,
so the fact that I loved it not just despite it being sci-fi, but because of
it being sci-fi is definitely saying something about how well the author
built the world and wrote in this world and wrote this plot because she really
constructed an interesting plot that made you keep wanting to read and
wanting to discover answers. It did take a little bit of reading for me to get to
that point where I really wanted to keep going and discover answers plot-wise, but
I definitely think that it wasn't like I was 200 pages in the novel before that
happened, it was probably about 50 pages in the novel where I started getting
really excited and interested in the plot. Writing-wise, this book was
absolutely fantastic. The author of this book is actually a debut author, so I
didn't have super high expectations for the writing, I did think it would be
really good, but it definitely exceeded my expectations. I'm pretty easy with
dialogue and the dialogue in this novel was intriguing and you wanted to keep
seeing more of it and I loved it, but what really got me was the descriptions -
it's harder for me to find descriptions that I really like, it's easier to
impress me with a dialogue than with descriptions, but she managed to really
impress me with the descriptions in this novel. I felt like I could really see
the world she was painting and see the characters she was describing, I could
really see the picture she was trying to paint and that's something that I have a
lot of difficulty doing and I find it very hard to find descriptions that
really entice me, but she managed to do that extremely well in this novel. But
all of that is nothing compared to the characters in this novel - if something is
going to make you read this novel, it's 100% the characters.
These characters are so well-developed that you will want to adopt them all as
your children - I've adopted three myself and I'm dating one currently - so you can
tell that these characters are ones that you will really get emotionally attached
to. Their personalities are so well-written and are so well-developed
throughout the novel - seeing the characters' growth or seeing how the
characters have changed - I just loved seeing that, I loved seeing their journeys
throughout the novel. This book is told and multiple points of view which can be
a really hard thing to do because it can actually come off really fanfiction-y,
but that's not the vibe I got at all. It wasn't told in first-person, it was told
in third-person which I think helped stay away from that vibe, but also just
reading about the characters was done in a way so well that it really made it
seem like a professional novel which it is, but it really strayed away from that
fanfiction vibe which is something I tend to feel a lot of times with
multiple point-of-view novels. And speaking of characters, the relationships
in this novel were so good. There were 2 romances that I was just so
interested in and one of them was a male by male romance and the other was a
female by female moments so, again, talk about diversity, but those romances
were done so well, done in such a cute way that I really shipped these couples
together and I was texting my friend as I read the novel, so I was texting them
and I was like "why aren't they just getting together they're obviously so in
love" because you truly ship these characters and the friendships were also
just so incredible. There were 2 friendships that I absolutely adored
100% and one of them started within this novel, it wasn't a previous
friendship that had already existed when the novel began, but it was one that
developed throughout the novel and it was by far my favorite relationship of
the entire novel because I just loved the interaction between these two
characters - they were both so sassy and they just got along so well and they're
probably my two favorite characters of the novel and the other friendship was
one that already existed before the novel started, but it was done so well
and it was written so well throughout the novel
I loved it even throughout the novel - just everything about this novel was so
good and I don't see why anyone would miss out on this incredible book. It's
diverse, it's well-written, it's interesting - it's just everything you could possibly
want from a novel - it has romance, action, humor - everything you could want in a
novel, like I said. And I talk a lot about contemporary and sometimes fantasy on my
channel, I don't often talk about sci-fi which is why I'm really glad that I had
an ARC of this novel to discuss with you all because I really think that this is
such a great story and it would be really good for people who have non-
contemporary tastes because that's my main focus, this is something for people
who are outside of that area. I hope all of this got you as interested in the
novel as I am because it is such a great novel and you won't regret buying it at
all - I promise you that this is a novel you don't want to miss out on, it's going
to be a best-seller, this series is going to be incredible, and I highly recommend
pre-ordering it or getting it the first week it's released because it deserves
to succeed. It's one of the most diverse casts I've ever seen as I stated and I
just want it to succeed and I hope that you all will help contribute to that if
you have the means to do so - request it at your library or pre-order it or just
add it on Goodreads and just help make sure it succeeds because it really,
really does deserve to. I hope you all enjoyed this video - I know I basically
