Final Fantasy XV is easily my most hyped game.
I remember seing the first trailer in 2006.
After many different versions, the game finally came out
on november 28, 2016
ten years later
and it almost lived by the hype
almost.
Just remember that there will be a few minor spoilers ahead
but nothing that will ruin your game.
Before the game released, Square Enix made sure
that everyone would be well informed of the unique lore of FFXV.
They released an awesome looking animated movie called Kingsglaive
that even if you're not fan of the series, it's worth it
an anime called Brotherhood with 5 short episodes
and questionable animation
at least it tells you a good story
and a novel called parting ways.
I personally watched the anime and the movie several times before the game came out
and bought the collector's edition of the game
that came with a copy of Kinglglaive in bluray.
I really liked that movie.
Final fantasy XV's concept is:
A Fantasy based on reality.
You see many familiar stuff in the game's art direction.
The tecnology is made to look like ours
the fashion too.
You go from california deserts inspired regions
to european style cities
and south europe like towns.
But then comes the fantasy part:
demons appears at night
the wild life is based on monsters
your ennemies are robots from an evil empire
and the soldiers from your kingdom can use magic
to do some very userful tricks
the most highlited is the teleportation when throuwing a blade.
It's a very compelling concept
it's hard to find anything in these aestethics.
But while the game did a pretty good job for the setting and background
the actual story is weak.
Final Fantasy XV was one of the few games that I bought day one
and two of my friends did the same.
I had the privilege to talk about our experience in this game every morning
For the first week, we didn't make to the third mission.
We were hipnotised by this beatiful world
making our own story
exploring every corner
hunting monsters
camping
selecting prompto's photos
learning new recipies
and leveling up.
It was a pretty good time and the best gaming I did that year.
Ironically, I had the most fun when I wasn't following the main quest.
The first 30 hours of the game are litteraly a travel.
In a road movie fashion, you need to get to your destination.
I actually thought that in the end of the road was the end of the game.
I wish it was.
We finally decided that it was time to see the story
a story that sadly has many passing issues
and not plot holes but plot cannions.
This game has two faces:
one is a vast unique open world
and the other
very linear sequences
where the story, that wasn't great
is completely forgotten.
Dear Square Enix
if you tease your game with that many lore
please, explore it in your title.
The main plot point of the story is to get Noctis father's ring.
If you see the movie
your expectations should be preety high for this moment.
But in the game, the ring do completelly different things.
It's actually laughable, not because it's funny
but because it's pathetic.
The most important piece of story in the game are the four main characters.
Actually, they are the only developed characters.
If all the first 30 hours of the game, I played only with Noctis
it wouldn't be so great.
But we spend the last ten hours of the game rarely with all the characters
and a good part of it with Noctis alone.
Final Fantasy XV has two completily different faces for a reason.
In 2014 Tetsuya Nomura left the game's direction.
It's maybe the cause that we didn't see this in the game.
Or this leviathan boss fight
that looked awesome back in 2013
but when we got the game, it looked like this.
We just need to press one button the entire fight.
This is Insomnia by the way.
But this is the insomnia we got in the game.
They showed so much of insomnia in the early trailers
back when it was called FF Versus XIII
and this is what we got.
And remember the pretty graphics of the open world?
Guess what?
In the last 10 hours of linear gameplay, it won't look like this.
No, it will look like this.
Those are clearly old Final Fantasy Versus XIII assets.
They recycled the old project
and we got a game with two faces.
All the graphics, facial animations, camera angles of the cutscenes and writing
just becomes a big mess in the last 10 hours.
A month before the the release date
this trailer was posted.
It's completely conceptual, none of this is in the game
but no one knew it of course.
It looks like a good story though.
With so many problems
I recomend everyone who didn't play the game yet
to stop the main quest half way through
and never get on the boat.
Just stop there, stay in the open world.
Hunt, level up, explore...
the story is over.
It will give you half life 2 vibes
but thrust me, it's better that way.
If you didn't see any of the trailers
and if you ignore the third act
it's a pretty awesome game.
Square Enix still suporting the game.
One of the updates added a new alternative chapiter 13
the wrost one
that you play with Ignis and Gladiolus
instead of Noctis alone.
Also there are 3 DLCs that fill some of the plot holes
2 of them already came out:
episode gladiolus and episode prompto
and episode ignis will come out in december.
But who really cares?
The ending hours of this game were so bad
that most people who played it don't want to come back.
Also, there's no reason too.
The dungeons of this game have poor level design
and the sidequests are a joke
"go take these items for me"
"look for this type of item"
and litteraly
"my back hurts, go do my job".
I wouldn't mind waiting yet another a couple of years
so they could finish the game.
Final Fantasy XV will be remembered as the best final fantasy
by the casual players who never finished the adventure
and will be forgotten and never forgiven
by the real fans who waited 10 years for its release.
