It seems like actress Jennifer Lawrence can do no wrong.
She's beautiful, she's likable, and she's talented…
But while she might seem like the perfectly imperfect person, J-Law has also gotten herself
into some sticky situations in the course of her meteoric rise to fame.
Here's what you might not know about Jennifer Lawrence's shady side.
"Hahahhaha, can you tell I'm a nightmare?"
Trans insensitivity
In November 2012, Jennifer Lawrence appeared on Ellen and turned what should've been a
simple conversation about her cat into an uncomfortably transphobic diatribe.
During the interview, she said:
"We call her Chaz Bono."
"She has such a masculine energy that everybody always says 'he.'
For the first week I thought it was a boy."
Ellen, a very vocal member of the LGBTQ community then gently tried to educate Lawrence on the
fact that tri-color cats are female before quickly changing the subject.
If Lawrence's original comment wasn't ill-advised enough, the episode was taped on the national
Transgender Day of Remembrance.
"I'm sorry!"
Sacred desecration
While on set for the second Hunger Games movie in Hawaii, Jennifer Lawrence disrespected
an ancient burial site in Hawaii by scratching her bottom on one of the stones and breaking
it loose.
But the worst part was her cavalier attitude about the incident.
While on the Graham Norton show in 2016, she recounted the story.
"They were, I don't know ancestors --- who knows --- um, they were sacred, and you're
not supposed to sit on them..."
"Oh my God, they were so good for butt-itching."
The worst part was when she then revealed that she displaced a large boulder as a result
of her action and mocked the natives who were offended.
"And all the Hawaiians were like, oh my God, it's the curse!
And I'm right around the corner going I'm your curse."
Lawrence's cultural insensitivity didn't go unnoticed.
Many native Hawaiians were furious with the actress, and Lawrence's apology for the incident
wasn't very comforting either.
She issued a statement on Facebook, saying, "From Jen, to the internet: I meant absolutely
no disrespect to the Hawaiian people.
I really thought that I was being self deprecating about the fact that I was 'the curse,' but
I understand the way it was perceived was not funny and I apologize if I offended anyone."
The fact that she apologized for offending anyone, rather than the irreparable damage
she'd caused to a treasured site, didn't sit well with everyone.
Ignoring sexism
It's no secret that Jennifer Lawrence has become close with director David O. Russell.
After all, her first experience working with him earned her an Academy Award, so she went
on to make two more movies with him.
But what's disturbing about their relationship is how casually Lawrence brushes off the documented
verbal abuses he's given to other actresses who've starred in his movies, including one
of her co-stars from American Hustle.
Russell, who famously berated Lily Tomlin on the set of I Heart Huckabees and got punched
by George Clooney for being mean to the cast and crew of Three Kings, was discovered to
have tormented American Hustle star Amy Adams so much that Christian Bale had to intervene.
But Lawrence seemed to think the victims of his nastiness were just being too thin-skinned.
She told Vogue, "Because I'm not so sensitive, we can really talk, like man-to-man."
She later added:
"David respects me so much that he will literally forget what sex I am.
He sometimes refers to me as a he without realizing it."
That absolvement of his potential sexism struck some fans as strange, considering she'd been
such a champion of equal pay rights around the same time.
Fake falls
When Lawrence tripped on her way up the stairs to accept her Oscar in 2013, it was endearing
and adorable… and then it just kept happening.
The very next year at the same event, she again fell on the red carpet, and people started
to wonder if her rampant clumsiness was just a show to the point that even her friends
had to speak up on her behalf.
"She's… terrible at walking."
For her part, Lawrence may be the lady that doth protest too much.
When asked about her allegedly deliberate clumsiness, she told Marie Claire,
"I'm trying to do the right thing, waving to the fans, trying to be nice…
But trust me, if I was going to plan it, I would have done it at the Golden Globes or
the SAGs.
I would have never done it at two Oscars in a row.
I watch Homeland — I'm craftier than that!"
To be fair, she has continued her slip schtick at other events as well.
