Waching daily Jul 27 2017

Czech Republic men's national field hockey team came in Saint Petersburg! And I was responsible for it!

They had rest days besides the championship! And how did we spend them?

THE WATER EXCURSION

So today is the first day of travel.

Czech men's team and me are going to conquer Peter and Paul Fortress!

No! You're going boating on the rivers and canals.

Well yeah.

You know, it's an interesting thing for me about the boating. I just asked myself "What does it really mean?".

Why so?

Look, I thought that "the boating" meant something else. I thought we're going... to buy some wooden little boats as souvenirs.

Or we're gonna go... boating... somewhere...?

You will go.

Really?

Wow, the weather is cool. Look at these clouds.

Honestly I've never gone on water excursions before. This is my first or second time. You see, I don't remember my last time going there. Like really.

All in all, we're ready to go. Folks are looking forward to the future trip. They're probably just sitting right there and discussing it.

Well, I feel good! We will go soon to the beautiful places.

I can't wait.

"Meanwhile, our boat is swinging..."

It's going to rain... (x2)

Maybe it will rain today, but... There's a strange thing.

So it's just cloudy over there. And here we have... Well, you can understand.

Some guys are going downstairs, but... I have no idea it is raining or it isn't.

We know what our boat is on the outside. Let's go inside.

There was conscription of people to build various buildings and structures in Russia. It was called "Gorodovoe delo" (literally "Town business").

When I went outside, it started raining.

So, guys, it started raining. Obviously it did. And we're going inside.

We're all here. Even the brave ones like us couldn't handle the rain. So yeah! We're chatting and having fun here!

Oh! Superman, Superman!

"Gorgeous :3"

"And the rain just stopped :\"

"Denis (one of the team members) is asking me for posing together"

Oops! Something's wrong here...

It's meme time!

"The excursion was over within minutes :("

That was amazing. Seriously. It was really interesting. And yeah, you probably didn't hear the whole information about the history and stuff. Maybe you heard it only once.

But all I can say now is... You should go on a water excursion, if you have an opportunity to do it. Try it. Why not.

Guys are looking for souvenirs now.

We're going to Burger King together!

That moment when you realized that fliers aren't necessary for Russian people, but they are for Czech people.

I don't know. Fliers are like the founts of wisdom for them. Like these papers are very important.

"They will never be lost! They will find food..."

"...and they will find the way back!"

Alright guys! I've just got back from the water excursion. It was really interesting. Yeah, I started repeating myself.

I want to tell you about two wrongs of that excursion. First of all, there was a strong wind. I couldn't tell you something from there, because of it.

And second of all, there was no English audioguide for the team. They didn't get the information about the glorious history of the city.

I feel sorry for them, because they perhaps wanted to know more about the history. Furthermore, there's no point for them to listen something they don't understand.

But that's okay. We have two trips tomorrow: to Peterhof and to Kronstadt. And I will shoot some cool footage for you!

Now it's time to relax!

PETERHOF

We've finally arrived and... Guys slept a little and listened to our guide, who was telling about Peterhof and Russia in whole.

Sometimes there were bad jokes about Russian reality, but... It's what it is, you know.

*This is our tour guide*

Firstly we should buy tickets and then the fun will start.

*bang* Okay. (x3)

We've entered the Peterhof and now we're walking down the Lower Park. It's just a beginning.

"The Eve Fountain 0_0"

Here are the famous Peterhof fountains! The fountains that people are talking about all the time!

It seems like it's all a dream.

Well, I washed my face.

I don't even know what Czech team is talking about! Like really.

Honestly I thought that we came to the place we were before. It's like we're walking in circles.

Check it out. The same Eve.

Or it's not her...

Ah... It's Adam, by all accounts.

Welcome to the "Look at these emotions!" show.

There is the Monplaisir Palace nearby. The name of the palace translates as "My pleasure"... Right? Or as "My satisfaction"...

I don't speak French.

We'll come a little closer so you can see it.

Just like in the Versailles Park!

This is getting interesting! Now I want to take photos or video footages everywhere we stop.

But damn! I don't think my camera has an eternal free memory card space! Oh my God!

Here drizzling rain is! It makes us so happy.

"We got to the trick fountain!"

I'm just a little wet. It's okay.

These are the popular fountain pranks! It works when you step on some stones under your feet.

It's a really genious idea! If you want to have fun or clear your head, you can come here. You won't expect it!

So it's time to move, and it seems that we lost our guide. Oh there she is!

Indeed, there are very beautiful foutains.

And it gets better!

You know, I want to think about eternal, when I see such beautiful places like these. I don't know why. I just want to. It's amazingly great here! There's no easy way to say it.

Why haven't I been here before?

We knew that we haven't so much time. So we need to speed up.

We're going right there and visit something else.

After that, we take a trip to Kronstadt.

We would like to go there, but our guide doesn't like stairs.

We've come to the real cool place. And what is it?

This is Museum of the Fountain Craft. Awesome!

Look at that! Look at that! It's like the Fountain Alley!

That's right! It's the building that we saw earlier!

We saw it from there! We were there last time!

It's awesome, isn't it? Did I say it twice? Wow.

Just so happens that we're shooting in the same position. Yeah, it's pretty interesting.

By the way, here's a youtuber with us. Here he is!

Denis Tomeš. There will be even the link to his channel in the description.

You can visit his channel, if you want.

Maybe there will be the other video about Peterhof, but on his channel.

There's the Grand Peterhof Palace, but we don't have the time to go there. Moreover, it started raining.

It's drizzling rain, but also it's kind of unpleasant. So now we're going to Kronstadt!

"A link on Denis channel in the description"

This is just the umbrella parade!

Oh my God! We lost her! We can't find our guide! Where is she?

The rest of us is already here.

Kronstadt, we're coming!

KRONSTADT

We've arrived to Kronstadt. There's the St. Nicholas Cathedral behind me.

"Or the Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas"

And I can say that it's pretty spacious here. The cathedral is very beautiful.

Yes, I'm sure it is, unlike many other cathedrals I've seen in Saint Petersburg and also in other cities of Russia.

This is the type of cathedrals I prefer, anyway.

Apparently we're going inside.

I guess, a divine service has just begun. And...

I don't even know what to say. I can feel the harmony here, despite the fact that...

I feel peace and harmony here. Again, I don't know why. Maybe because of...

Because this place is quiet, even though there are many people here.

And probably these chandeliers are lit in the evenings.

When it's not blinding, it's more comfortable to be here.

Our final destination is... Basically it's the hotel, but here it's Petrovskiy Park.

I'm using my smartphone to make a video, because I want to save camera's space storage. I'm able to shoot only four minutes of video on it.

I hope that guys liked our trip. They're really impressed. And I hope that you liked this video.

"Maybe they're just playing or maybe they're having a bet :P"

Thanks for watching! :D

The TRUTH About The Upright Row (BASED ON BIOMECHANICS) - Duration: 12:53.

What's up champ! I'm Vince Del Monte of GeneExpressionTraining.com

In this video we are going to look at the truth about the upright rows.

Alright. Yes one of the most controversial exercises out there.

Is it a friend? Is it a foe? Let's take a look at the

pros and cons of this exercise. Pros did I say? Maybe. Let's find out. There may

be a way to do this in a way that's completely 100% safe. Maybe not. We'll

find out. Let's dig in.

I know you guys love me just getting right to the point

so I will say that the way that 99% of people do the upright row

is unsafe. It's unnecessary. I'm going to show you a better exercise in this video

that has the same muscle recruitment patterns and it's far more natural

for the scapula and the humerus in just a moment. Alright.

But let's first take a look at how most people do upright rows.

Most people have been taught to go very close grip. Some people have been taught

to go medium grip. Some people have been taught to go wider grip. Some people been

told to do the straight bar, to do the Z bar. Different variations to try and

alleviate what the biggest concern with this exercise which is impingement of

the shoulder joint, that is a very real reality I will agree with that. If we

look at (one second) if we look at unfortunately I don't have a more

detailed skeleton here but if we were looking at the rotator cuff muscles

doing this movement does smoosh the supraspinatus and it causes a lot of

issues, alright, especially if the movements done too fast and especially if the

movements done too heavy. And where do most people go to build muscle. Too

heavy and too fast right. So that's the big problem first of all. Alright. Now

there are structural issues as we just discussed. Tthe impingement. Right. Now what

I want us to look at is the healthier way to do the upright row. Alright. The

upright row, if we involve natural scapula and humoral rhythms, we can get

the exact same participation of the delt muscles that we would get going up and

down okay. This movement is essentially having

somebody put your arm into an armbar and twist. Anybody been in an armbar before?

It's not nice alright. It does not feel good. So every time you're doing this,

you're literally going in an armbar. Armbar. Armbar. And not to mention to get

into that position if we watch whatever one of the recent videos are regarding

how to do your arm exercises a lot of stuff has to change at the wrist joint.

You see how see what's happening at my wrist. This is called ulnar deviation

alright. All of the stuff on the front is being lengthened and none of this stuff

is engaged. See how the muscles just like popped when I went like that. So you

can't maintain this neutral grip which is creating a lot of ulnar deviation at

the wrist which is putting your joints in a very compromising position. So this

position... see this... see what my wrists have to do to get up here - even here. You

see what my wrists have to do. Look. See my wrists have to go in an ulnar

deviation. I can't maintain what's called radial

deviation where I can get flexion and I can engage these muscles to maintain a

more natural path. Alright. So I'm destroying my wrist for very virtually

no benefit. Alright. Even if I go really wide now my wrists still have that ulnar

deviation. See even if I go way out here I'm still doing some funky stuff at the

wrist to just get into this movement. So we can pretty much say that almost all

variations of an upright role with at least a fixed object like this or a straight

bar can be thrown in the garbage. Alright. Let's look what actually is happening

when we do this movement. This movement. What is does movement look like? If you

cut my arms off right here, you took a hacksaw, slice me off right here, what

does this motion look like? The freaking lateral raise.

This is a lateral raise. Let's look at a lateral raise.

How does this look any different than this. It's the exact same participation

of the same muscles yet with this motion we can allow the natural humeral scapular

rhythm to occur. And we can reach and we can maintain that space in the joint so

that we're not smashing up our rotator cuff muscles.

We're not smashing up the bursa and we have a much more natural motion

alright. So if you guys want to build your shoulders you can do the exact same

movement and what you can also focus on doing is allowing your shoulder blade to

move and you can reach for opposite walls and you can maintain that tension

on the shoulder in a strong position where you can produce force. Alright.

So we're not going to do anything like this or anything like this. The only time that

doing an upright row can be an upright row, a partial upright row, that has the

same movement pattern, that doesn't have as many issues, is something you may

have seen me do in with some of my videos is where I've got the dumbbells

with neutral wrists and I'm just moving like this, and I do that more for just

variety. Again it's the same thing as this, but I can load the shoulder a bit

better because the load is closer to the axis the shoulder axis. Alright. so I can

load the shoulder a little better but I am aware that there's no more benefit to

going up here because now we have smashing into the shoulder joint that

impingement and it's hard to maintain that natural scapular rhythm right here

as opposed to here which is much more natural. Alright so for everybody who has

loved the upright row, I'm going to give you two alternates. Ones that eliminate

the risks and have the benefit of that movement pattern at least a part of that

movement pattern alright. So we're going to start off with dumbbells and I'll

show you cables. So the first thing we want to do set this up in a neutral

shoulder alright, and we're going to allow natural scapular humeral

rhythm to occur just like you were doing a side lateral raise. We're going to make

sure our wrists are locked so we don't have that ulnar deviation stuff going on

that's trashing your wrist. We're going to lock that in and we're just going to

pull out pretend that you're a marionette now and you've got strings attached to your

elbows and there's somebody up there up in the ceiling and they're attached to

those strings to your elbows and they're just pulling you out and then they're

letting you in, they're pulling you out and then they're letting you in

pulling you out and then letting you in and you're just going to work through

this really limited range of motion and this is one way we can challenge the

side delts without all of the crashing into each other at the top. Now some

people have asked me Vince, what about this at the top? How about that?

That's probably one of the worst things you can do because you are loading your

muscle where it's the weakest. You're pulling pulling pulling. The muscles are

the weakest here and then you're adding rotation. You're adding rotation when the

muscles the weakest and the loads the heaviest so probably the worst thing you

can do for your shoulders. Keep it safe. Keep it simple. All you're going to do is

pull out and come in pull out and pull in that's it I'm sorry it's not more

fancy than that guys. That's your move alright. So the next version of an

upright row which will blow up your shoulders - very limited range of

motion. I'm going to walk you through it. It's a cable upright row. So the first thing

we have to understand is that these things are trying it cross us. Alright.

So to prevent that from happening we need to oppose it. So we're going to

oppose it with what? Our delts. So right from here we have to contract our delts.

A lot of people have a hard time even feeling their delts so this motion

here gets us into that position to start fighting and creating force within our

delts. If we look at the wrist, look at my wrist, this is ulnar deviation. This is

neutral. This is a bit of radial deviation. You want neutral wrists. We want

to think about these things actually being attached here and here at the

elbows and we're going to initiate from that angle, we're just going to pull up.

It's a very small range of motion. Again just think lateral raise. Think you're

doing a side lateral raise and just pull the cables out.

This creates a lot of side delt activation. It feels really good and you

want to think about elbows to the outer walls. And that's it. Sorry I didn't wear a

tank top for you guys but you guys can feel this when you're at the gym

alright. So it's out in. Out in. Small range of movement we don't need to go way up here.

That's when the wrist stuff starts changing that's when the crashing starts

occurring. I think you guys can experience the benefit of this by

practicing it yourself. Alright guys. So to wrap up I give you guys one more

analogy. We talked about the marriage analogy. We've talked about the car door

analogy, we're going to start talking about the stock analogy. Alright. If we're

looking at our exercises like stocks, you're always trying to figure out is

this a stock I want to invest in. Right. All stocks have risks. All stocks have

rewards. Alright. We're always looking for the risk profile - risk benefit ratio.

Right. Upright row is an exercise that has very very small benefit when going

up here. High high high risk alright. The biggest two issues with it

is the speed and the amount of weight all right. To make this exercise better

we have learned in this video that if we line it up and we maintain the same

movement pattern as the side lateral raise, we allow that natural humeral

scapular rhythm to occur where you're not going to smash the head of the

humerus into your chromium and into that into those rotator cuff muscles which

are going to cause you issues, and we'll be able to still get a nice contraction

alright. So again it's really that simple. I am NOT a fan of any version of

a barbell upright row. I think it's an exercise you can safely throw away

and you can make and you don't need to do it because you can make it a lot

better just with the versions we've taught you in this video. Alright guys

so again, start looking at your exercises from a perspective of stocks. Is this a

stock you want to invest in? Is this a stock that's going to pay you back or is

this a stock that's going to cause you to go bankrupt?

Is this a stock that's going to put you in the ground and that's going to be

unrecoverable from? You guys are looking for a resource to show you how to

execute all your movements, all the shoulder exercises to build great delts,

Why Pennywise From It Looks So Familiar - Duration: 4:54.

Bill Skarsgård isn't a household name yet, but give it time: he's the younger brother

of The Legend of Tarzan star Alexander Skarsgård and son of veteran actor Stellan Skarsgård,

and this emerging star is set to make a name for himself as the terrifying Pennywise in

the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel It.

The demonic clown was brilliantly played by Tim Curry in the 1990 TV miniseries version

of the book, so Skarsgård has some big clown shoes to fill — but he also has more acting

experience than you might think.

Here are a few projects you may have seen him in:

Arn: The Kingdom at Road's End

Arn: The Knight Templar and Arn: The Kingdom at Road's End were combined into one epic

cut for international release in 2010, though in Sweden they were released as two separate

films based on fictional hero Arn Magnusson.

Bill's father Stellan played Arn's uncle Birger and reprised the role for the sequel, bringing

his son Bill in to play Erik, son of the King, played by Bill's older brother Gustaf.

The Skarsgård-filled epic two-parter is the most expensive Swedish film of all time, costing

around thirty million dollars.

Kenny Begins

Skarsgård went from a deadly serious historical epic to a completely ridiculous sci-fi comedy

in 2009's Kenny Begins, a feature length prequel to Swedish TV series Kenny Starfighter.

Kenny is a hopeless "Galaxy Hero" who crash lands on Earth and meets Skarsgård's Pontus,

an equally unfortunate 15-year-old with terrible eyesight and a problem with local bullies.

Simple Simon

Skarsgård's next performance not only impressed domestic critics, it also won plenty of praise

Stateside.

The Hollywood Reporter said 2010's Simple Simon "performs the neat trick of finding

laughs and wisdom about a central character who suffers from Asperger's syndrome, yet

does so without trivializing the serious nature of the affliction," and called Skarsgård's

performance "superb."

Behind Blue Skies

While The Hollywood Reporter was impressed by Simple Simon, their review of the second

Bill Skarsgård film to come out in 2010, the '70s satire Behind Blue Skies, wasn't

quite as kind.

"Satirical pokes at Swedish society at the time are unlikely to strike too many chords

overseas.

While there are some appealing performances, the picture seems bound for a cloudy time

beyond home territory."

Still, it wasn't all bad.

Singling Skarsgård out to praise his performance as Martin, a troubled boy with an abusive

father, Variety argued that he "makes the most of a real star turn" in this "joyously

clever take on the coming-of-age story."

Anna Karenina

Making his English-language debut, Skarsgård appeared in a minor supporting role in the

2012 British historical romance Anna Karenina, an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic novel

of the same name.

Unfortunately for Skarsgård, the project he chose as his maiden voyage into English

cinema was a story that for years had been deemed impossible to successfully adapt due

to the sprawling nature of the source material.

Reviews were mixed, and the box office results were lukewarm.

Hemlock Grove

Netflix original series Hemlock Grove got off to a great start in 2013, pulling in more

viewers over its release weekend than House of Cards.

Interest in the Eli Roth werewolf thriller soon began to wane, however, and Netflix announced

that the third season would be the its last.

Skarsgård played sulky vampire-like creature Roman Godfrey, who uses his supernatural powers

to get what he wants …

"Shut up and kiss me."

Allegiant

Dystopian teen franchises became big business in Hollywood after The Hunger Games, but they

can't all be blockbusters.

Case in point: The Divergent series, which suffered diminishing returns at the box office

and progressively worse reviews over the course of its first three installments, bottoming

out with 2016's Allegiant.

It was all a learning experience for Skarsgård, who played Matthew, a scientist sympathetic

to the protagonists' cause.

If the franchise failed to live up to expectations, the second-generation star said he used it

as an example of a lesson he'd taken from his father.

"Even if it was the worst, most horrendous production and the movie turned out garbage,

whatever it is, the experience was something that he learned from and he wouldn't want

to live without."

Atomic Blonde

Before terrorizing the kids of Derry, Maine in It, Skarsgård appeared in what he described

as a "small but fun part playing a German punk" in Atomic Blonde, the feature length

adaptation of Antony Johnston's Cold War-set spy thriller graphic novel The Coldest City

starring Charlize Theron.

Atomic Blonde earned largely positive reviews from critics, and it's got franchise potential:

a prequel to The Coldest City entitled The Coldest Winter was published in 2016.

Whether Skarsgård will return remains to be seen.

Either way, expect the brooding Swede to pop up with increasing regularity in Hollywood

over the next few years.

The YouTube Email List Building Strategy - The Business Risk! - Duration: 4:12.

Have you ever wondered why the internet marketing gods keep banging on about

building your own email list? I want to highlight an overall strategy or goal a

business owner should be looking to achieve to enable their business to grow

profitably whilst pointing out a fundamental and potentially deadly

business risk that is often overlooked and which you can put in place a simple

procedure to insulate yourself from. And that step is to build your YouTube

email list or customer database as it is sometimes referred to. Yes, it sounds

boring doesn't it? Well it's not if you get caught out! Stay tuned to find out

more. Hi my name's Jeff Laming from Video Cashflow and in this video I explain why

having a YouTube email goal is a vital strategy to implement from the very

start of your marketing plan. Before we do so if this is your first time

watching a Video Cashflow video and you like what you see, hear and read then

please click the Subscribe button below this video so you can get access to

weekly videos on video marketing and business tips, tactics, techniques and

strategies that will help you with your own online business. So what's this all

about then? Well, firstly you want to capture the email addresses of as many

people as possible who are viewing your videos on YouTube and on the other

social media platforms. And this might be by offering viewers a free gift such as

a downloadable PDF ebook or by offering access to a free online YouTube training

course. These are warm prospects or leads and these prospects are more

likely to watch future videos and to go on to buying your products and services.

Secondly, YouTube like all the other social media platforms like Facebook,

Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn have their own rules that everyone must abide by.

Sometimes the people that operate these social media platforms can be very

brutal in the way that they apply these rules, almost to the point that it seems

like they're making up the rules as they go along. So if you're relying on

generating income directly from any of these social media platforms including

YouTube your revenue can dry up, literally, overnight. You may have heard

of or read about some horror stories of business

owners being taken down in one go. This is a classic case of having all of your

eggs in one basket. With an email list you can still continue to trade and operate

Why does the Periodic Table look like that? - Duration: 6:59.

Hey Crazies. Ready for some more quantum mechanics?

Yeah, me neither. But I'm crazy, so I'm going do it anyway.

In the previous video, I mentioned the periodic table a few times and said that quantum mechanics

perfectly predicts it. This, of course, left Borg972, Blazej Michalik,

and others wondering, you know: How's it do that?

Well… Samarth Sai was asking about this thing.

That's the hydrogen atom's wave-function and…

…before we can understand the periodic table… …we need to have some idea of what wave-functions say.

YOU CAN HANDLE THIS… I PROMISE!

What's a wave-function? Yeah, that seems like a decent place to start.

A Wave-Function is just a mathematical representation… of a particle.

It contains everything you can possibly know about a particle's properties.

Yes, there is only (finger) one single wave-function for a particle in given state.

All three of these graphs from the previous video are found using the same wave-function,

just written in terms of different measurements.

In fact, you can write that same wave-function in terms of whatever measurement you want

to make a prediction about. All you need is a Fourier Transform.

They're a total pain in the butt, but they work.

Anyway! As you can see, inside of an atom, position

isn't very useful. There are a lot of possible locations for

the electron. If you want useful information, then it's

best to stick to definite measurements like energy.

We call those the "stationary states" of the particle because they're stable and

steady. But those contain more information than just

energy. Since a particle's Energy and part of its

angular momentum are definite at the same time, they can be measured at the same time.

That means the same stationary states work for both.

It's super convenient!

Which brings me to something Jade from Up & Atom and Josh Webb were asking about.

What's the deal with orbitals? Orbitals are, well, they're very poorly

named. Yes, the electrons inside atoms are moving.

They have both linear momentum and angular momentum but that doesn't mean they're

orbiting. If they were, those orbits would collapse.

Remember, electrons don't obey the rules we're used to.

You must unlearn what you have learned. Just think of orbitals as subdivisions of

an energy level. The size of a city block can determine how

many subdivisions it will have. A small block might have one subdivision where

as a large block might have four. The same thing happens in atoms, but it depends

on how much energy is available.

Like usual, let's number the energy levels: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.

Sometimes energy levels are called "shells," so these are Shell numbers.

Those numbers also tell us how many orbital types there are.

Shell number 1 contains 1 orbital type, but shell number 4 contains 4 different types.

You can label these types with another number based on angular momentum or with a letter

for historical reasons we won't go into. Each of those types is then subdivided into

a number of orbitals based on how the angular momentum is tilted.

And before someone comments "You forgot to mention the shapes!"

You know who you are, Ben! Yes, different orbitals have different shapes

and orientations, but that doesn't really matter until atoms start bonding to each other.

Forget about that for right now. All that matters today is how many orbitals

there are in a shell. That's what tells us how much room the shell

has for electrons, which is why different rows on the periodic table have different

numbers of elements.

But isn't each of these sections twice as big as it should be?

Yeah… that's where spin comes in. Particles seem to have a little more angular

momentum than they should. Just a smidge, but it's measurably there.

When we were trying to name it, of course we resorted to an analogy.

The Earth has orbital angular momentum because it orbits the Sun. But it also rotates, so

it has a separate spin angular momentum. So electrons are spinning inside atoms as

they orbit? No… No, they don't do anything like that.

Electrons do not orbit. Electrons do not spin. We know not where they're going. We know

not where they've been.

In quantum mechanics, the term "angular momentum" implies very little about motion,

so I'm just going to keep the word "spin" in quotes from now on.

Whatever "spin" is, it's an intrinsic property of a particle. It can't ever change.

Electrons, protons, and neutrons are all Spin 1/2 Particles,

meaning their angular momentum is always off by half a Planck constant either one way

or the other depending on orientation. Why is this important?

Oh, right, right. Any particle with one of these spins is called

a fermion, named after the epic historical physicist Enrico Fermi who you might remember

from the orders of magnitude video. Fermions have a problem. They don't get

along very well. You can't ever have two in exactly the same

state at exactly the same time.

You can only have two in each orbital, which forces some of the electrons into higher

energy states. Shouldn't that be one electron per orbital?

Oh no, my friend. Two. Like I just said:

You can't ever have two in exactly the same state at exactly the same time.

That means if at least one of the quantum numbers is different, it's totally fine.

A specific orbital is labeled with 3 of those numbers.

Spin is also a quantum number and the spin orientation another.

Even though these two electrons are in the exact same orbital, their spins are opposite,

so it's allowed.

Those two spin states are the reason the sections of the periodic table are twice as big as

the number of orbitals. s-orbitals can hold 2, p-orbitals can hold

6, d-orbitals can hold 10, f-orbitals can hold 14, and so on.

However, you've probably noticed row width doesn't grow for every row of the table.

That's because energy shells don't have clear boundaries.

They're not separate things like in a Russian nesting doll.

They overlap a little, so the orbitals inside them don't get filled in the order you'd

expect. Orbitals are filled from lower to higher energy,

which isn't necessarily in shell-number order.

Just like with anything real, it's complicated. Luckily, as atoms get bigger, the types of

orbitals stay the same. It's only the energies that change

and, since electrons are the foundation of chemistry, the repeating patterns will group

similar chemical elements into columns. It doesn't have to be rectangular though.

It could just as easily be circular as long as the groups line up.

Rectangles are just easier to read. So, what shape do you think the Periodic Table

should be? Let me know down in the comments and I'll

read them… periodically. Thanks for liking and sharing this video.

Don't forget to subscribe if you'd like to keep up with us.

And until next time, remember, it's OK to be a little crazy.

The featured comment comes from Raju who pointed out the concept of atoms was being discussed

in India before Ancient Greece. This is technically true. I admit it was a

bit euro-centric of me, but the further back in time you look the more religious and the

less scientific those discussions were. It's difficult to know where to draw the

line.
