Can the GPD Pocket run Crysis... with super low graphics? FPS boost tested on Intel Atom + IntelHD - Duration: 5:14.
The GPD Pocket, the world smallest laptop, is not exactly sporting gaming ready specs
and yet has proven capable of a fair amount of gaming surprises if you are willing to sacrifice enough.
But CAN.
IT.
RUN.
CRYSIS?
This old internet joke was born from the long-held reputation Crysis games have of using PC
resources to the max and therefore being very difficult to run, and very good as benchmarking test.
So, given that the first Crysis game came out a decade ago can we play it on a modern
Intel Atom?
We can... with some sacrifices... many sacrifices.
This is the LowSpecGamer, a channel where I explore what is the lowest you can push
games to breath gaming life into low-end or older hardware.
So, for my first video of 2018: What can we do about Crysis?
Crysis has a very powerful dev console with hundreds of commands to try.
The console can be opened with the button under scape on the keyboard.
Usually assigned "tilda" (~). Most of these commands can be added in an autoexec.cfg file in the game's
installation directory and that will be applied every time the game starts.
You will find the commands I used on a file in the description but before explaining some
of most interesting ones let me make an observation.
You will see some commands marked as system, this means that in some of my test setups
these appear to be protected and would not load from an autoexec file.
A way to get them to work is to copy them to the files in the installation directory,
game, config, and in there you will find files that load commands for each of the game's
difficulty levels.
If you find that any of the commands marked as "system" are not working add them at the bottom
of the file of the difficulty that you are using.
So let's begin.
Make sure always to start with con_restricted 0 to disable restricted mode, otherwise, commands
will not work.
For example, this set of commands here tweaks textures and r_TexResolution 4 can reduce
most of the textures to their absolute plain lowest.
These section tweaks lighting related effects.
E_dynamic_light 0 will disable dynamic lights completely which provides a performance boost
but might make the game too dark.
E_max_entity_lights controls the number of lights on certain objects, so reducing it
is another alternative but setting it to 0 can cause certain objects to flicker weirdly,
so 2 seems to be the lowest value you can use without problems.
This section plays around with some of the draw distances for details
For example, reducing e_view_dist_ratio to 1 causes non-essential objects to appear right
in front of you.
E_detail_materials_view_dist_z controls the distance at which the ground is drawn at full
resolution so 1 makes it low resolution all the time.
E_flocks is... amusing.
The game has all sorts of animals and fish on its environments that you can disable by
setting that variable to 0.
Oh, I miss the turtle already.
Ca_UsePhysics is another interesting one.
On normal combat when you kill an enemy they turn into limb ragdolls with physics like
any other game, but if you set this variable to 0 there is no enemy physics and so enemies
will just freeze where they are when they die.
Finally, this game has tons of vegetations that we can play around with.
E_vegetation_sprites_distance_ratio controls how far the vegetation has to be from the
player to turn into low detail sprites.
Setting it to 0 turns most of the vegetation into sprites.
And you can control the resolution of those sprites with r_VegetationSpritesTexRes.
Setting it to 8 turns them into this blurry mess.
E_view_dist_ratio_vegetation controls the density of vegetation and setting it to 1
reduces it to the bare minimum around the player.
If you would rather just get rid of it all, you can use e_vegetation to 0 to make it all
invisible.
I am going to stay with some vegetation, keep all other changes and try the game on the
Intel Atom computer.
With this, the game becomes... am... something?
Right, having everything appear as you walk can be distracting and the lack of ragdolls
and physics can make it a bit hard to figure out if enemies are dead or alive when fighting...
Also, you low object draw distance makes it much easier to spot enemies but much harder
to actually shot them as there might be something blocking your shot that you can't see?
But hey, look at the bright side.
The game is currently running at 720p with around 30 fps when nothing is happening and
closer to 22 until intense action which many of you will consider playable.
It is actually pretty good considering the specs that we are using
So, can we play Crysis on this thing?
Yes.
But it might look fairly different to what you expect.
If you want to use any of this the configuration file is in the description, feel free to experiment
and use each command as you want.
You can also follow this as a written guide on the modmy link in the description.

Money For Nothing | Mark Knopfler Songbook | TAB | Lesson 33 - Duration: 16:54.
Boy, this is fun.
Money For Nothing riff is
another example of this kind of duality
like in the Walk Of Life riff, when on
the one hand you have this complex
fingerpicking going, but on the other hand,
not only this riff works as an intro, it also is
a part of the verse, the chorus and
the outro as well, it goes through the whole
song all the way form beginning to end,
which means it's meant to be played while singing.
Playing and singing at the same time is a pretty
demanding task, especially when you have to
play it live not for a crowd of a thousand,
but sometimes for a crowd of a billion
(I'm talking about LiveAid).
More on singing later.
So unless what's you're playing has a strict and
simple pattern it's too easy to mess it up.
And Money For Nothing riff has a simple
pattern, which Mark describes in his
A Life In Songs documentary, let's watch.
So what he's saying is that the basic pattern of
the song is his signature
thumb, upstroke, downstroke and upstroke
move on two strings.
It's just four steps,
looks easy enough, right?
The interesting part is
when he talks about blocking strings.
The riff is a call and response melody in 8 bars,
as in Why Aye Man and What It Is, both of which
is also an 8 bars call and response riffs.
You should be able to sing it and to play it
as a single note line at any given time.
And it starts on an off-beat, which can be
tricky right away.
It starts with blocked strings,
strings 4 and 3.
Remember this pattern?
It starts with
the 2 last moves.
With the thumb hitting the first beat.
It can be slide, muted strings, muted and
open strings, open strings, or it can be just a rest.
Now the riff itself.
First two notes is thumb, index and middle on
two strings and then a downstroke.
This is crucial, because so many people mess
this part up by playing like this…
Then an upstroke, hammer-on to the 7th fret with
the thumb at the same time.
To an upstroke.
Then optional thumb and index fingers on the
4th string, downstroke, upstroke, thumb.
Slide to the 3rd position, upstroke, mute.
Now it's an upstroke and mute with the
thumb on two strings.
This thumb stroke is a very
strong one, almost like a downstroke.
The end of the call is more straightforward,
it's open strings upstroke, then another upstroke
and mute on the downstroke, to the muted upstroke.
All still in the 3rd position.
Now in the 1st position
it's a Bb power chord and the thumb, mute,
to C power chord.
To downstroke and upstroke.
See, the original pattern is all over the place,
so Mark is definitely right about that.
The response starts the same, on an off-beat,
only going down to this Bb here, with an upstroke
and thumb, then upstroke again, and a hammer-on.
To another upstroke.
It's three upstrokes in a row.
By the way, fingering in a typical Mark's fashion
is a very wide one, using 1st and 2nd fingers
on 5th and 7th frets here, adding the 4th finger
up on the 8th fret.
Reminds me of a double bass
where they play by ignoring the ring finger because
of the hugeness of the neck.
In Mark's case it's also
the hugeness of the neck.
But I like this fingering anyway.
Also, in the beginning of the riff it's these
two fingers and a pretty compact shape.
So we're going up in terms of the difficulty.
The riff continues with a thumb here.
Upstroke, pull-off, upstroke.
Then
downstroke, upstroke and thumb.
So it's 5 upstrokes in a row, I just realised that.
The ending is like before.
These power chords also
stays rhythmically the same, only
the root changes to F and G.
This is a lot of information.
Let's recap and play it as
slow as a human being can possibly play this riff.
Before I tackle the rest of the song,
I'd like to point out that all these harmonics
is purely an accidental stuff and you may like
it or not, but it just happens, I don't think they
were planned out and just happened in the studio
at the moment.
Oh, and this part, too.
Who knows what they did.
The verse is difficult to describe, because here
the original pattern is king.
It's just a bunch of
open strings, power chords and mutes all thrown
under the wheels of this pattern.
The song goes…
On the second part of the verse here goes
the riff in all of its glory.
And this is so difficult
to play and sing at the same time.
When you know the riff inside out, don't try to sing
yet, but very slowly check all the key words and
corresponding beats.
See, "that's" falls on this note.
"On" falls on this note,
"little" falls on that one and so on.
The microwave ovens part is Eb power chord,
going to Bb power chord, to Eb power chord again,
now the F one.
And here it's the second part of the riff.
Also very hard to sing.
To C, D and E power chords.
To add even more power, here's an old trick
of Mark's—add a thumb over.
Here's the main
part of the song completely again, guitar only.
Soloing-wise the song is very pleasing for
jamming along because it's 99% G Minor pentatonic
and it's a very "guitaristic" key.
Occasionally there's
this distinct E from the C Major chord and it's pretty
much the only thing that can change.
But let me tell you, this is fun.
From 33 songs I learned so far
in terms of fun this one takes the cake.
So the next time you'll watch Mark playing
Money For Nothing, just appreciate the amount
of work he put in each performance.
With songs like that you can't just go and play
it with 50-50 chance, it's hard work, and it's only
playing the song, imagine writing something like that.
This is working.

First impressions of Todos Santos, Mexico - Duration: 3:46.
Todos Santos, Mexico
(Just arrived from La Paz) -Your first impression of Todos Santos?
It's beautiful.
We always say that.
No but seriously it's so nice here.
It's a "pueblo magico", it is considered a "magical village"of Mexico.
And I can see why, it's definitely special and the views around town...
Oh yes, the nature is breathtaking.
So green, filled with palm trees and small mountains.
Just fantastic.
I just read that this monument, which is a mural of the Aztec sun...
... was inspired by the calendar of the Aztec people.
I'm really enjoying Todos Santos, it's a nice little town.
And this smoothie is delicious.
So what do you think?
It's very quiet here...
You can see there is more of a rich culture than La Paz...
Yes there's more of a community, a bit of everything.
We ended up in a Mexican restaurant.
We're eating some tacos and "chile relleno", which is their speciality here.
With some rice and beans.
And also they gave us some hot tortillas.
Hot chili sauce...
So, "bon appétit"!
A little stop on the way to Cabo San Lucas...
Arrived to Cabo San Lucas, the southern extremity of Baja California.
We asked this Puerto Rican family if we could film them :)
We have a YouTube channel, you'll be appearing in one of our episodes!
Thank you so much!
Hey, what country are you from?
So we speak French.
Wait, what is your channel's name?
Alright, we're leaving now because the sun is setting and we have a 3 hour drive to La Paz.
