we're gonna weld a boat up today and I just got an email last night from Mike

in the past different shops I've worked at have shied away from aluminum because

is so difficult you made it look easy it is easy

holy crap it's easy it's time oh he's enjoying building this boat and he's

doing a beautiful job of it looks like that he's got a jetski engine in there

and there you go seats and everything muginami

welding really is easy and boy if you get nothing else from this weekend I

hope that's what you get away from it we've got all kinds of ways of welding

aluminum MIG not TIG and tag is actually complicated that takes a little bit of

eye hand coordination but this mag I'm going to show you it's just point and

shoot power then goes to our Miller control

box here we turn this big cable on and off also takes an AC plug now we just

need yes 100% argh on the spool mate a 30 it's got a drive motor in here that

pulls the wire off of a one pound spool there and gas valve nothing to it

we also gonna be using this HTP propulse 200 it's a pulse welder kind of funky

thing and it has some cool features for welding aluminum it takes 2 to 20 line a

gas line it has everything in one box so you guys

reflecting around in here so how you put SPF only yesterday so look at this this

is cool now we're not going for a boat this is that echo what hello hello now

we're not going for a boat that's really pretty so I told the guys weld it and

they did now show you some things that happen that are bad for that and we need

to get Greg over here cuz he will to the other side the story that's just not out

of it it's easy to fix you know aluminum is you know that's a

beautiful eight by all metal is it's easy to fix see they got this plate on

and they it's it's it looks like it's dipped horribly it's really not that's

the distortion because the welds bring it up endowment so you can still flex

this plate so we may need to cut it loose and get it a little more even

along the bottom the top one is the same way you see you'll see ripples in it

well this one's actually pretty damn good oh there's a big one right there

you see it kind of goes uphill right here him back down but that's that

flexes a little bit so we can put a little gusset in here

and straighten that out you want a little bit more reinforcement on that

anyway you see a big one up here from the front yeah where it goes up and then

back down but a lot of this we can straighten out my handrails and some

gussets and this is even the iffy part of the boat if we got too much weight up

here we're going to trim it down and cut a lot of this off and redo it look we're

gonna we're gonna wait to see on that because this is a beautiful work deck up

here on the front so anyway happy as can be it's coming along it was a lot of fun

to have all the guys over here yesterday there's a lot of talent among them but

I've want to get you across to you too that you don't have to have that level

of talent building on these boats there's a lot of the guys over here they

were just passing through yesterday using the welding machines and they

could lay down some really good welds it's a lot of matter of you know taking

your time and doing it carefully if you want a pretty boat

but we're not in a pretty boats we're in work boat so pretty is not a necessity

no so I'm not doing much of a video on this what I want you to do is go look at

Chucky 2009 and and Peter's ela and 42 fab and

well the rest of the guys over here don't have YouTube channels but those

are the main guys that came in Oh Steven Cox yeah because of we got a diesel

engine running and it sounds good we got the starter mounted on it I mean even

though that would be a problem he rigged that up fine so cool we got something to

work with and he tuned up the it turned up the fuel pump on it tuned showed me

how to do that so we're in business thank you to all you guys so if you

haven't subscribed to their channels go do that they're wonderful talented

people and yet you'll get a lot out of it

First stop: the Ancient Theatre.

Antique Theater

History rules!

I'm so happy to be here.

I love the ancient world.

This is a huge Gallo-Roman theatre.

It was built at the end

of the first century BC

and abandoned

at the end of the Roman Empire.

We didn't rediscover it till centuries later,

at the end of the 1800s.

These days it's home to a music festival

called Les Nuits de Fourvière.

Past meets present.

It's huge!

Are you ready Lugdunum*? (* Lyon in Latin)

It really is massive.

10,000 people – can you imagine?

I'm not out of breath. Honest.

Lyon Museum of Fine Arts

Marion is a curator at the museum.

What sort of things do you have here?

It's a comprehensive collection.

Greek and Egyptian antiquities,

decorative artworks,

classical and contemporary painting.

Many of our masterpieces

like Gauguin and Monet

have been photographed

in super high resolution,

so you can get up close

and see each brushstroke,

each mistake, each hesitation.

It's a way to discover the art,

before or after you visit the museum.

I love anything to do with mythology.

What would you recommend?

Try the chapel.

That's where we keep all our mythological

and neo-antique sculptures.

We're in front of Perseus,

who is slaying Medusa.

Medusa was a monster

with snakes for hair.

If you looked right at her,

you'd turn to stone.

Here, Perseus is about to cut her head off.

This line, nicknamed 'the Thread'

was opened to the public

over 100 years ago.

I'm standing in front of a 'Traboule'.

Traboules are passageways that go

from one street to another

– through a building.

It's a local word,

They were famously used

by local silk workers,

helping them carry their goods

to the city's fabric market.

And they were used by the Resistance

to confuse German soldiers

in the Second World War,

and renovated in 1993

by the architect Jean Nouvel.

We stage classical and modern music,

The Lyon Biennale

It's a major event for Lyon.

There are 150 biennales in the world.

We're third or fourth

in terms of visitors, budget, reputation.

Which isn't bad!

I'm in the Confluence district,

which was renovated in 1995.

It's all super high-tech buildings.

Especially the Musée des Confluences,

which was completed in 2014.

The museum specialises in natural history,

anthropology and civilisation.

Its name refers to the meeting point

of the Saône and the Rhône

and also the crossroads

of knowledge and culture

A long time ago, there was a young man named Gauche in a town.

He was a cellist playing in the Goldstar Orchestra.

Recently the members of the Goldstar Orchestra were practicing for a concert.

Gauche was actually a poor skilled player of the orchestra

so the maestro complained to him all the time.

"Cello, you are out of tune!

This is not good. I don't have time to teach you how to play."

The other members felt embarrassed for him,

looking at the music score or tuning their instruments; pretending they didn't hear the maestro's complaints.

Only six days before the concert, Gauche brought his cello home and practiced at night.

Around midnight somebody knocked on his door.

"Hi, Gauche."

A big calico cat Gauche had seen a few times before, entered his house.

"I request Schumann's Traumerei," the cat said.

Gauche thought the cat was rude, and played a different melody like a bursting storm.

The cat blinked its eyes and suddenly dashed into the door trying to get out.

'BUMP!'

Gauche was watching the cat's funny behavior and said.

'"Let me open the door. Don't come back you stupid cat!"

Gauche laughed at the cat running through the doorway like the wind.

He felt a little refreshed and slept well.

When Gauche was practicing the next day at home, a cuckoo knocked on the door.

"Please teach me Do, Re, Mi," said the cuckoo.

Gauche picked up his cello, tuned it, and then played Do,Re, Mi, ….

"No, no, no, not like that!"

The cuckoo bent its body forward then opened its mouth.

"Cuckoo!"

Gauche picked up his cello and played like cuckoo's song,

"cuckoo, cuckoo."

The cuckoo was very happy about his tune and sang with him,

"cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo."

Gauche's hand was tired from playing so much.

"Hey cuckoo, go home if you are done."

The cuckoo flew away to East.

The next night Gauche practiced at home until midnight.

He got tired and drank a glass of water.

Then somebody knocked on the door.

There was a little racoon at the door.

The racoon looked at him and said, "Please teach me how to drum."

The racoon tapped under the bridge of the cello, pitter patter.

Gauche was amazed by its very good rhythm.

The little racoon stopped tapping and tilted its head in thought for a while.

Then, it finally said.

"When you touched the second string, the rhythm fell a little bit behind - like I get tripped up."

Gauche was startled.

"I think you are right because this cello is old," Gauche said sadly.

"Shall we try again," asked the racoon.

Gauche started again.

The racoon joined him by patting the cello rhythmically

and sometimes listened carefully with its ear touching the cello.

They played until the sun started coming up.

"The sun has risen. Thank you for playing with me."

The racoon bowed a few times and left quickly.

Gauche realized he was tired so he went to bed to rest up before heading into town.

The next day, he practiced all night long.

Somebody knocked on the door at dawn.

"Come in," said Gauche to whoever was knocking at the door.

A small field mouse holding a baby came through a gap in the door.

"Doctor, my baby is very sick and dying. Please please help us."

"I'm not a doctor! I don't know how to help."

Gauche was a little offended.

"Doctor, that's not true.

You cured a rabbit, an owl and other animals by playing music with your cello."

"What?

Are you saying I cured animals by playing the cello?"

"Yes, Doctor.

All neighbors around here go under the floor of your house when they get sick."

"And get better?"

"Yes, Doctor.

It improves their blood circulation and makes them feel better.

Some get better right away while others get better after going back home."

"All right then. I'll do it."

Gauche picked up the mother and a baby mouse and put them into 'f' - holes.

And then held the bow in his hand, started playing a rhapsody vigorously.

The mother mouse listened for a while and said,

"That should be enough."

She was shivering hard and then all of a sudden she opened her eyes.

"My baby is well now. Thank you, thank you," said the mother mouse happily.

Gauche put the cello down on the floor and went to a cabinet.

He tore a loaf of bread and gave a piece to the mother mouse.

The mother mouse was deeply moved and carefully took it in her mouth and left with the baby.

"Oh my, my. It is tiring to be talking with a mouse!"

He went to bed and immediately fell asleep.

Six days later, the concert was held in the town hall.

The orchestra played the Sixth Symphony and the audience applauded enthusiastically.

The audience called for an encore so the maestro told Gauche to play something for them.

"Me?"

Gauche was taken aback at the unexpected request.

He returned to the stage and played as well as he could.

When he finished the encore and returned to the backstage,

the maestro said cheerfully.

"Well done, Gauche! Everybody was listening seriously.

You played the cello like a beginner ten days ago, and now you play like a master.

You just needed confidence."

All members of the orchestra came and congratulated him.

"That was great, Gauche!"
