Bad Acting On Netflix Shows You Can't Unsee - Duration: 7:35.

Since launching as an online DVD rental service in 1997, Netflix has transformed itself into

a content powerhouse with as much clout as any Hollywood studio.

They've pulled it off by essentially giving creators free rein.

While that approach has produced hits like Stranger Things, Mindhunter, and The Crown,

it's also resulted in some shows that the streaming giant can't forget fast enough.

Many of those bombs have been fueled by some of the worst acting performances in recent

memory.

Whether the result of subpar writing, misguided casting, or just plain old bad acting choices,

these are the worst performances on Netflix series.

Finn Jones, Iron Fist

After successful adaptations of Marvel's Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, Netflix looked

to go four for four with the addition of the Kung Fu Zen master known as Iron Fist.

What they got instead was an absolute snoozer of a series that pretty much failed on every

front.

Throughout the first season, Finn Jones delivered an agonizingly stilted performance that wavered

between twitchy childish outbursts and super-serious mugging.

This approach probably could've worked, as Iron First is supposed to be completely out

of touch with the modern world, but Jones never managed to add enough depth or humanity.

Instead of coming across as an emotionally conflicted hero, he's just a spoiled brat

with superpowers.

"She's been lying to me from the beginning.

Everything she said, just using me!"

"Danny.

Danny, calm the eff down!"

Naomi Watts, Gypsy

It looked like Netflix had pulled off a coup when it greenlit Gypsy, a psychosexual thriller

starring Naomi Watts as a psychologist injecting herself into the lives of her patients.

But once the show premiered, it was clear that it had wasted its intriguing setup and

its star's talents.

Despite a mix of spirited intellect, effortless sensuality, and internalized conflict typical

of her better performances, Watts just never found the right balance.

Ultimately, her increasing melodrama just makes it too hard for the viewer to connect

with her.

Will Arnett, Flaked

After scene-tealing supporting turns on Arrested Development and 30 Rock, it seemed only a

matter of time before Will Arnett found a starring role to match his talents.

With Flaked, a comedy about an alcoholic self-help guru struggling to keep his life together,

it looked like he'd finally found it.

Arnett might be one of those actors whose talents are more effective in small doses.

That much is clear throughout the painfully dull Flaked, which finds Arnett shamelessly

overplaying punchlines and undermining the drama.

What's so confounding about this misfire is that Arnett is playing the typical in-your-face

character type that's served him so well.

But in this case, it never feels like anything more than shtick.

Flaked could've been an intriguing dark comedy with a stronger lead performance, but instead,

it's all but unwatchable.

"Truth, unity, and goodness."

"Yeah, you're right.

That does sound pretentious."

Colleen Ballinger, Haters Back Off!

Based on Colleen Ballinger's Miranda Sings webseries, Haters Back Off! tells the comedic

tale of a talentless wannabe who stumbles backwards into something resembling infamy.

Imagine Pee-Wee Herman without the playfulness or Napoleon Dynamite without the heart.

It's just as grating as it sounds, and Ballinger's shrill, wildly over-the-top performance is

the biggest problem.

To be fair, it's all intentional, but it doesn't mean those choices work.

Her antics may be a good fit for a three-minute YouTube clip, but they're too much to handle

for 30 minutes.

Sure, the show is actually occasionally funny and has some interesting insight about desperately

wanting to be famous, but Ballinger's one-note act is unbearable.

If pointing that out makes us haters, so be it.

"You people are monsters!

All of you!

I've been reading your comments, and you all say mean, horrible things!"

Rob Schneider, Real Rob

Have you ever wondered what the world looks like through the eyes of Rob Schneider?

Probably not, but that didn't stop Netflix from letting him star in his very own Curb

Your Enthusiasm knockoff.

But Real Rob doesn't really offer an insightful or self-effacing version of its star.

Instead, it's a self-indulgent hodgepodge of ideas from other, much funnier shows.

"You can do it.

Hahahaha.

Alright, see ya."

If you've seen Schneider in lowbrow fare like The Animal or Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo,

then you already know what to expect.

But his hamminess on Real Rob is a new low, even for him.

The only thing less funny on the show than his acting is his standup, which is interspersed

throughout.

"But that, uh, Taliban, oof.

What's that, uh, what's the kind of, uh?

That Sharia law?

That's tough."

Britt Robertson, Girlboss

Britt Robertson is a talented up-and-comer, and she'll almost certainly be a big star

in the very near future.

But her portrayal of self-made millionaire Sophia Amoruso on Girlboss is, while occasionally

charming, the most wildly off-kilter element on an already off-kilter show.

[Screaming] "Body cramp!

Body cramp!"

Robertson feels like the victim of bad casting and poor writing more than anything else.

Still, she could've found a way to bring some humility to the "warts and all" approach.

The coarseness she brings to the show's more biting moments is a bit too harsh, and the

quieter moments come across as contrived.

What makes it so difficult to watch is that you can see Robertson working.

Unfortunately, though if you can see an actor acting, that means they aren't doing it very

well.

Miles Heizer, 13 Reasons Why

13 Reasons Why arrived on Netflix with a touch of controversy and a wave of critical praise.

The first season was so self-contained that a second seemed completely unnecessary.

But Netflix went ahead and renewed it anyway, only to watch it slide to the opposite end

of the critical spectrum.

Throughout the poorly-scripted second season, some of the problems that were tolerable in

season one came back with a vengeance.

Most notable was the performance of Miles Heizer, whose deadpan affectations turned

into emotional vacancy.

In the end, his incessant mumbling and awkward fumbling drained the show of emotional energy.

[Blank stare]

Candace Cameron Bure, Fuller House

Never underestimate the power of nostalgia.

Full House was never a critical darling, but it has remained a favorite for millions of

millennials, prompting Netflix to produce a reboot which is one of the worst shows in

recent memory.

Fuller House lazily recycles the same premise of the original, just gender-flipped for the

next generation.

It tries to jazz up its stale trappings with a winking sense of self-awareness, but it

doesn't work.

If you thought the acting was bad the first time around, just stand back and let Candace

Cameron Bure do her thing.

She's just as hammy as when she was a kid on Full House.

It's almost impressive in a way.

The entire cast of Friends From College

The poor critical reception of Friends from College is surprising, considering how many

talented folks are involved.

Proven comedic stars like Cobie Smulders, Keegan Michael-Key, Nat Faxon, and Fred Savage

are in front of the camera, and it was co-created by Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas

Stoller.

A pedigree like that should've at least produced a watchable, occasionally funny bit of comic

distraction.

"Now I work as a general counsel for a hedge fund."

"Which one?"

"Blackstool Group."

From writing to pacing and everything in between, nothing clicked, and the biggest letdown was

the cast.

Their flat line readings and absurdly exaggerated facial expressions left a trail of broken

punchlines and missed opportunities.

The incessant overacting made dramatic moments unintentionally silly, and their utter lack

of chemistry left viewers believing they were never even friends in the first place.

"Alright, but it's not going to happen, I'm not gonna make this leap into the literary

pantheon, which, by the way, no longer exists!"

Gay Theory: The DEADLIEST spit bubbles in gaming history! (Danganronpa Series) - Duration: 5:04.

This video was originally going to go full on parody,

but matpat's latest video had me thinking a lot about what it would be saying to release something like this.

So while I am going to keep the script the same, Anthony and I will be taking this much more seriously

then we had originally intended. And with that, please enjoy the video.

Whew, I'm glad the Ugandan Knuckles meme is finally dead! Now I don't have to make a theory about spit anymore.

Please...

Remember me. Hello internet and welcome to gay theory,

the show where I have to reference a dead meme to even make an attempt at a joke.

But today we're gonna be looking at a game that has nothing to do with jokes

Danganronpa

More specifically Danganronpa 2, is a game where 16 students are stuck on an island and forced to kill each other.

Now while there are a lot of dangerous things that happen in this game,

Today I'm going to be talking about the most dangerous one of them all. That's right today we will be talking about…

千秋ナナミ

Now for those of you who are confused let me explain,

And this will contain spoilers,

Chiaki Nanami is an A.I program implemented into the Hope Restoration Program by the Future Foundation. The Future Foundation is a group that while important to the identity of this character, we won't be covering today because it would make the video too long to render.

"Sorry to all her fans out there. If any of you even exist, that is."

Her A.I program isn't the topic of this theory however, today we will be discussing something about her that is all too human,

Her spit bubbles. "Lisa," you ask me, "what could possibly be worth discussing about her spit bubbles?"

"Are you a stupid dummy-head?" And I'm glad you asked because today, my loyal theorists,

We will be talking about what I believe to be "The DEADLIEST spit bubbles in gaming history!"

It's not harmful to others, but to herself.

That's right! Today I am going to prove to you that Chiaki's spit bubbles would suffocate her if they existed in real life.

To figure out why these spit bubbles are so deadly we need to use various equations to figure out their Tensile Strength.

Tensile Strength, for those of you who HAVEN'T finished high school,

Is the measurement of how much force a material can withstand before it breaks. To represent that we are going to use this equation: F/A (N/mm2)

Width times thickness divided by two times force. The first step to figuring out this equation,

And figuring out the following equations,

Is to figure out how much force is exerted when coughing. Because after realizing she can't breathe,

Her body will practically be heaving trying to find air since our bodies need oxygen.

The first part of finding out the force of her cough is to take the mass of whatever is being moved,

Which in this case is Carbon Dioxide rather than Oxygen since this breath is being exhaled.

Carbon Dioxide's Molar mass: 44.01 g/mol And then multiply it by the acceleration of the cough

Which lucky for us, has been accurately documented on the internet for our use. A cough can travel as fast as 50 mph.

Before we can plug that number in, we need to convert it to kilometers per hour instead of miles per hour. 50 mph converted into 80.4672 kph. 44.01 times 80.4672 (Mass times Acceleration)

And after plugging all that information into the equation we get a Force of .983712 Newtons. Whew!

That was quite the workout, too bad that we still have a way to go though.

Now the second and last step to figuring out this equation is to determine the mass of the spit bubble itself.

Now since we don't have any scientific research articles to tell us the mass of spit bubbles, we are going to have to use another bubble with a similar consistency, bubble gum.

The mass of an average piece of bubble gum is around .0277mols.

Now H2O on the other hand, the main ingredient of spit bubbles, have a mass of 18.02 g/mol which is a difference of 36.101083 times.

Now, using that number we can determine that the mass of a spit bubble is .499154mols.

Now using that number .499154mols and the one we found before, .983712 Newtons, we can finally determine how much force would be needed to pop a spit bubble.

So, using the equation that I presented to you at the beginning of the video, F/A (N/mm2) ((55 millimeters times .499154mols) divided by two) times 0.983712 N. (27.45347 area divided by two) times 0.983712 N. 13.726735 diameter times 0.983712 N.

Which is width times thickness divided by two times force, we can finally say that the force needed to pop a spit bubble would be...

13.5031539 Newtons.

That number is INSANE! HOLY COW!

That number is almost 14X the force exerted from a cough. There is absolutely NO WAY she would be able to breathe after blowing one of those bubbles.

Of course, she could always just slap herself and that would pop the bubble, but hey,

That's just a theory, a GAY theory! Thanks for watching!

Book Attack! BookTubeAThon Day 1 Challenge - Duration: 3:53.

Hey folks! I'm Owl, this is Yarn Owl Reads, and today I'm going to attempt to do the

first video challenge for BookTubeAThon 2018. This first challenge was created by

Hailey in Bookland and I will link that video below. The challenge is to

create a book cover using just things around your house. I don't know what book

cover I'm gonna do yet... yeah, so I should probably figure that out first. I am

going to pick the book, I'm gonna grab all the things and then within five

minutes I have to create a book cover right here, so wish me luck! I'll be right back.

Okay, I'm back and I am now concerned that the

book cover I've chosen is not going to fit into this space. I'm going to try and do

Gracefully Grayson by Ami Polonsky. It's a pretty straightforward cover. It's a

really gorgeous book about a trans girl coming into herself in middle school, I think.

Anyway, I have all of these things. I'm gonna start the timer and hopefully in

less than five minutes, I will have made this book cover. Ready, set, go!

Okay... I'll move this back a little bit,

but hey, two and a half minutes, not bad. Let's... okay, I'm sort of proud of

that. I wish I'd been able to get it a little bit more yellow, but there are

also blue accents on the cover and there are blue accents in my quilt so not bad.

Go me. And also if you haven't go check out Gracefully Grayson. It's very much

like George. It reminds me a lot of George in that it's a trans girl

figuring out she's a trans girl, and like coming into herself in... I guess this is

more middle school. George is elementary school. It has to do a theater and all

sorts of stuff. Superb book. A plus, definitely recommend.

But yeah. Also, if you are interested in BookTubeAThon at all go check out their

videos. I know there's reading challenges, bookstagram challenges and booktube

challenges. I'm going to be doing the video challenges and the picture

challenges, the bookstagram challenges, because I have a very set idea of what

I'm reading this week and it had, like nothing to do with the reading

challenges. But anyway, yeah. This was fun. Look forward to more of this in the

coming week. Bye!

The Problem with Objectification - Duration: 2:53.

What's the harm in objectifying women?

No one gets hurt, right?

Let's make something real clear.

There's a difference between objectifying someone and seeing someone for their beauty

and appreciating that.

So I was a junior in college sitting in mass one day and this girl went up to go do the

reading.

I'd never seen her before.

Never met her.

And I remember seeing her walk up to give the reading and my first thought was literally,

Woah.

That's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.

The next thought that followed was one that was so clear.

One simple question, three words.

Who is she?

Like, who is she?

What's her name?

What is she studying?

What does she like to eat?

Does she like coffee?

Does she wanna get coffee with me?

While a lot of people might think that's a normal response.

You see a beautiful woman, you want to get to know who she is.

For me, that was kind of a first-time experience.

Anytime I saw a woman's beauty, my thoughts were not, "Who is she?

How can I get to know her?"

It was something more along the lines of, "How can I get with her?" or "What can I get

from her?"

And I thought this was a completely normal response.

For us as men, this is not what we're called to do.

It hurts our ability to love.

It hurts our ability to be strong for people.

To honor and respect the women around us.

As a saint once said (St. John Paul II), "The only proper response to the human person is

one of love."

Women, men, human beings - we are not objects.

We are not objects that are meant to be used.

When we're captivated by beauty, something very good and very right is happening.

The women around us are not meant to be a thousand temptations to Hell.

But their beauty is actually meant to be a thousand invitations to Heaven.

So what is objectification?

It's, in plain words, seeing another person as an object.

And we know human beings are not objects.

Objects are something we use.

Human beings are not meant to be used.

When we objectify another human person, they have no say in that.

It takes away their agency.

They don't know that we might be fantasizing about them or imagining them or just thinking

about them for their body parts.

No one deserves to be used.

And so when it comes to our attractions, when it comes to our sexual desires, let's keep

that in mind.

That when we are drawn to another person, something very good is happening.

But we must not stop at the superficial.

We must not stop where our culture tells us it's okay to stop.

Let's dig a little bit deeper.

Remember that within ever person is an infinite universe of greatness that we can spend lifetimes

awing at.

Some of you guys might be wondering what happened to that girl that I saw and thought, "That's

the most beautiful woman - who is she?"

We're actually engaged.

We're going to be getting married next year.

So, say a prayer for us!

And when I think about how beautiful this is, I remember it started with one simple

question.

Who is she?

How to Subtitle a YouTube Video with Camtasia - Duration: 13:05.

How do you handle YouTube closed captions

when there are two, three, or more people talking in the video?

I'll tell what happens.

A mess.

But no worries, I have a Camtasia solution for you.

I'm Naomi Skarzinski with the Top Shelf VA channel.

Your place for creativity and inspiration for business and life.

Okay, the first thing to mention is I have already

produced an in-depth tutorial on how to create transcripts and closed captions.

Those methods work perfectly fine if you are the only person speaking in your video.

The first half of that training is a good review of the various ways you can create

the actual text file for your transcript.

I've provided the link in the description below.

What we are looking at today is what can happen when loading a text transcript

with two or more people, music, and background noise.

It can be difficult for YouTube to set the timings when loading the text file directly to YouTube.

I'll show you an alternative solution using Camtasia 9 or Camtasia 2018.

Let's first see what the problem can be by loading the text for one of my client's videos.

Let's get in here and see how YouTube did with the timings for the closed caption.

I usually like to review this at one and half speed to save a little bit of time.

Hi, I'm Evelyn Gallardo from the Discovery Beach House and I'm with

Sabrina.

Our concierge extraordinaire and thank

you so much for joining us on our happy hour tour.

Okay, so far so good.

So, here we are at the Ronny's Place here in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.

[Music]

Hmmm, the intro bumper is still showing the previous closed caption section,

so the time is off right here.

[Music]

Then it's showing the music notation with the next caption.

So that's off and is going to have to be fixed.

Let's see a little bit more.

Yeah. (...here.)

Well, our sangria is not like the regular sangria.

Okay, it does well until we get to this section.

Evelyn said, "here."

Sabrina said, "yeah,"

and Ronnie said, "Well our Sangria…", etc.

None of which lined up where they should have.

Let's go ahead and speed up to another

section, so I can show you what a pain it can be to line the timings up in YouTube.

Let's put this back to normal speed.

So, we can see where Evelyn says, "Pura Vida" is not lining up properly.

We then have to go back to find the right place to stop,

which can be tricky since we cannot adjust this wave form at all.

It's hard to see.

Okay, she said, "yeah" right there, and now I have to

adjust it here by dragging this over to the left.

Then I have to go back and drag the beginning of this

one over to the left to match it up with the one before it.

There is Evelyn's pura vida,

and Sabrina's pura vida,

and her cheers.

You can see how it can be frustrating to do this in YouTube.

It's hard to line everything up with the wave form,

having to adjust the left and right on every single solitary caption

because when you move one in YouTube, it will affect all the others differently.

It's very frustrating.

Well, you get the picture.

Let's go ahead and see how we can do this in Camtasia.

Before we get in there, let me mention a few points.

First, I'm going to show you one way specifically, which I think is the easiest,

for creating what is called a SRT file in Camtasia 9 and Camtasia 2018

to load to YouTube.

Second, I never render and load directly to YouTube from Camtasia.

It's a personal preference.

I always render out to a MP4 file and then load the MP4 file to YouTube.

Why do I do this?

By rendering it first as an MP4, waiting for five minutes or so, and then watching the MP4 on

different player rather than in Camtasia or the preview, I usually can catch something I might have missed.

For me, it helps ensure I load the most accurate and close to perfect video as I can

provide to YouTube.

So, with this tutorial I will be using the MP4 file I had rendered out.

However, you could easily do this directly in your Camtasia project file if you wished to do so.

After loading the MP4 to the first track, I expand it, so I can distinctly see the wave form.

This is so much easier to read the wave form here than it was in YouTube.

I click on Captions.

Then I click on the Add Captions button.

A large text box for the captions appears on the canvas.

On the track above the first track, which is holding the

MP4, the captions asset appears, which I like

to expand out the full width of the video.

I manually expand the Closed Caption asset here,

but really, it's not necessary to do that.

It's just a habit I picked up.

It will expand automatically on its own.

If you were doing this in your project file, simply add a track above where your audio is and

add the captions there.

Okay, go ahead and get the text file of the transcript.

Highlight the text.

Copy it with Control plus C and paste it into the captions box with Control plus V.

Click on the Closed Captions setting icon here at the top and then select Sync Captions.

A pop-up window explains a little how to use this.

One.

Your video will begin playing.

Two.

Click a word to create a new caption.

Repeat until all text has been captioned.

I want to make a note here for you.

In most cases, when you

transcribed your video, you should have transcribed with one sentence per line.

That will help you in knowing when to click on the word starting the next sentence.

Try to click with the new sentence each time.

Sometimes, if a sentence is long, I will click somewhere in mid-sentence and after all the

settings are made, when I am tweaking, I will adjust it then if I need to.

For now, I'm just trying to click when I hear the word of the next sentence or mid-sentence.

It doesn't have to be perfect, because you will have the opportunity to tweak everything once you're done.

Three.

Use Pause and Stop buttons to control playback.

Go ahead and click on Continue and the video will start right away.

Up here, you will click on the word when you want the next caption to start.

Sabrina.

Our concierge extraordinaire and thank you so much for joining us on our happy hour tour.

(So…)

Let me go ahead and stop this for a second and show you what is happening.

As you can see here, what I have tried to do is click a word every time that someone is

speaking separately or starting a new sentence.

Now, here's the thing, I clicked on stop instead of pause, to show you this.

If I had clicked on the Pause button, it would say Resume, and you could easily just keep going.

If you do click on stop, no worries, you're not stuck.

Simply place your playhead where you want to start.

Go back up to the Closed Captions settings icon and select Sync Captions again.

Click on Continue.

A message appears asking if you want to start at the playhead or from the beginning.

Select at playhead.

If you wanted to start all over again from scratch for some reason, from the very very

beginning, that is when you would click on Start at beginning.

For our purposes, we'll start at the playhead.

The first few times you do this, it will take a little

bit to get use to keeping up with the audio and clicking but it's a relatively short learning curve.

Now of course, you don't need to watch me do all of this, so let's jump to the end here.

Now what we are going to do is watch the captions with the audio and fine tune it.

To get back to the beginning of the video I will click on Control plus the Home key.

What I'm going to be looking for is to have two lines per caption.

You can have three; however, I prefer two.

I'm also going to look for places where the timing needs to be adjusted

slightly because I clicked either too early or two late.

I'm not going to go through all of these but show you just a few quick samples.

We'll listen and watch the wave form.

Hi, I'm Evelyn Gallardo from the Discovery Beach House and I'm with

Sabrina.

Our …

So, we see here she starts with "our," so all I have to do is move this to the left.

You see that's much faster than it was in YouTube.

I'm not having to worry about the adjusting the left and the right sides of a caption.

See, they are stitched together and move as one.

So, here we are at the Ronny's Place here in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.

[Music]

Here, with the music, I want to separate this out into two captions.

I'll right click on the caption and select Split Caption.

When splitting the caption, it puts the same text on both sides of the split.

On the first caption of the split, I will delete the text starting with "One of the special things…"

On the second half of the split, I will delete the music section.

Now I'll move back a little and line up these captions appropriately by the wave form.

Rica

[Music]

One of the special things that I love about Ronny's Place is not only Ronny himself, …

Let's go ahead and do a couple more examples.

Here's an example of where I want the sentence to end on the caption before it.

I'll click in the caption, cut out the Ronnie by highlighting it and

pressing Control plus X to cut it.

Remove the extra line space by pressing the delete key.

I'll go to the prior caption and adjust the sentence.

Then I'll paste Ronny to end of the sentence by pressing Control plus V.

Here's the place where all three were speaking.

Remember, that was a little tricky in YouTube.

So, I'm going to decide to adjust this, so it makes a little more sense.

I'm going to take Evelyn's "here" and move it over with Sabrina's "yeah" and indicate that it is

the ending of Evelyn's other sentence by putting it into parentheses.

This will indicate to the reader that both are speaking at the same time.

I think you get the idea now.

Simply go through all the closed captions, adjust as necessary to the wave form, and if

needed, moving some text from one caption section to the other.

Once you get use to it, it will get much easier and faster.

Don't forget to keep hitting Control plus S throughout to save the work you have done.

Once you have all the captions the way you would like, you are only a

couple steps away from loading them to YouTube.

Go to Share.

Export Captions.

Go to the location on your hard drive where you want to export the file to.

Give the file a name.

As you can see, you are now about to save the file as a SubRip Captions File with an SRT extension.

Click on Save.

If we open the SRT file, what we will see is Camtasia 9 or Camtasia 2018 has time

stamped each caption.

This is what YouTube's closed captioning system will read.

Back in Youtube, under Subtitles CC.

Let's go ahead and remove the previous text version I had used for demonstrating the issues

of YouTube's automated closed captions when you have two or more people in the video.

Let's get rid of that.

Now click on add new subtitles or CC.

English.

Upload a file.

Click on Subtitles file.

Browse and then go to the file on your hard drive and double click on it to upload it.

You'll get the warning message that uploading a file will overwrite this version of English,

which is perfectly fine.

Click on upload.

If you want to be on the absolutely safe side to make sure everything is accurate before you

publish, you can watch it one last time.

You can make any minor tweaks to the text on the left side here.

It should be fine because you used Camtasia 9 or Camtasia 2018 to super fine tune the timings.

So, you really should be fine.

Once you are happy with it, click on save changes.

That's it!

If you have two, three, four, or more people in your video, use your Camtasia 9 or Camtasia

2018 to get the most accurate closed caption SRT file possible.

I'll have the link to other closed captions and translations training video in the description below.

You can watch the first half of that video to learn ways to produce transcriptions for your videos.

Until we meet again, have a wonderful day!

- Well, first of all, I think it's important that

when you are advocating to your clients

how they should do something,

particularly around best practise,

and managing their staff correctly,

and ensuring they put the right people into

various positions in their organisations

and adhering to their own values.

In doing that, you need to practise what you preach

and make sure you own house is in order,

so I think it's really important that we make sure

our organisation is doing all the things that

we're advocating to our clients.

Then I also mentioned, I think, that it's important

to understand, stand in the shoes of our client,

to understand what are all the pressures on them

around their decision-making and understanding that better.

So, that helps us provide the right advice for the client.

But what we have also found over time, I think,

is that lawyers can

allow their work to grow in a way

where they're just putting out fires on behalf of clients.

So they might receive one claim after another claim

after another claim and they'll just readily help

the client defend the claim without stepping back

and saying "Actually is this a systemic issue here?

"Maybe we need to do something about this."

And opening up that sort of conversation.

And the reason why I mention that is because, yes,

from earliest days, from university days when I was studying

this political psychology subject,

I'm interested in what makes organisations tick.

And HR departments are really the professional caretakers

for how an organisation operates.

They're responsible for all the various leaders

or overseeing the leaders and advising the CEO's

and the managers about the best way to get,

create a productive workplace.

And, so us as employment lawyers, we're there to support HR.

And so I guess the issue is about what a particular interest

is around workplace culture.

And this is a term that we're hearing increasingly

a lot more about, particularly I think in the late up to

the decision about the Royal Commission into the banks.

So a lot of it has been about talking about culture

in banks and likewise if the organisation has a particular

culture and there are leaders to influence culture

and there are also ways in which to determine

whether the culture is struggling and, again,

it's all about getting lawyers to understand

the language of what those things might be.

So, organisations has surveys, for example,

to check in on how engagement service,

how people are feeling about the organisation.
