A joint team of researchers from Korea and the U.S. have developed a way of transferring

huge amounts of data across the internet at mindboggling speeds.

The development is set to make a huge contribution to future scientific research,.... while also

having the added benefit of allowing us to download our favorite TV shows even faster.

Park Soyun reports.

Researchers in Korea and the United States have joined arms to develop cutting edge technology

that can send massive amounts of data at a tremendous speed.

With the development of big science, data volume has increased at an exponential rate

making the production, mode of storage, and transmission of data more important than ever.

The data size in Bio and Space Science is too massive to be managed in a single institution.

Open science, which forms various research cooperation networks, is a possible solution

to this problem.

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research responsible for the discovery of

Higgs particle, is a case in point.

(Korean) With a middleware that allows data to be transmitted

easily,.. we've created a favorable environment for researchers to analyze scientific data.

This technology can send 50 gigabits of data -- the size of a 50 minute drama -- from the

central Korean city of Daejeon to Chicago in just 90 seconds.

This is currently the world's fastest data transfer rate and is three times faster than

the current technology.

The faster transfer speed can help to maximize data capabilities as well.

(Korean) "We need technology and infrastructure that

supports one data source to be transferred to scientists.

That's the technology we are working on here."

With this development, the future looks bright for research in this field of cutting edge

technology.

Big freeze returns _ 122617 - Duration: 2:20.

Good afternoon, after the Christmas chill, temperatures will drop even further... remaining

in negative territory all day here in Seoul.

The capital will top out at minus 1 degree Celsius while other major cities will have

much milder highs under sunny skies.

Expect to be hit with an even bigger freeze on Wednesday with a low of minus 11 degrees

Celsius in Seoul... readings will ease a bit just in time for the New Year's Eve weekend...

but readings will plunge again for the first week of new year so those heading out to check

out last sunset and first sunrise of the year will need to dress extra warmly.

Here are some popular destinations for viewing the sunset and sunrise, other than the staple

Jeongdongjin Beach in Gangwon-do Province... there are a number of other spots to check

out so be mindful of that and plan accordingly.

With that, let's take a look at the international weather for viewers around the world.

While icy cold conditions have returned for the final week of 2017 in South Korea, most

cities in North Korea will have even colder readings under sunny skies.

As for the rest of Asia, Typhoon Tembin will weaken to a tropical storm or depression by

the time it reaches Thailand, but so far no weather warnings or storm watches have been

issued.

Meanwhile, Sydney celebrated Christmas Day under cool, grey skies and it will be a repeat

of yesterday's weather on Boxing Day.

Heading to North America, frigid temperatures moved in after Christmas holiday snowfall

in the high in the Chicago only making it to minus 10 degrees Celsius which is 14 degrees

in Fahrenheit.

As for South America, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Bogota will have unstable weather conditions.

Taking you to Europe,... those in Moscow will have mix of rain and snow on Tuesday.

Lastly to Africa, Cape Town will have a windy Tuesday afternoon.

That's all the weather update for now.

Alexey Navalny barred from entering Russian presidential race - Duration: 0:46.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been barred from running in next year's presidential

election.

The Russian election committee ruled he was ineligible to take part due to a suspended

prison sentence for embezzlement - a case he says was fabricated.

Speaking after Monday's ruling Navalny called on voters to boycott the March election, adding

he was going to appeal the decision.

Navalny was widely regarded as the only candidate with a chance of challenging President Vladimir

Putin, but polls suggest the incumbent leader will have a comfortable victory next year.

Putin announced he would be seeking a fourth term that would see him become the longest-serving

Russian leader since Joseph Stalin.

Customers sue Apple over slowed iPhones - Duration: 1:37.

Apple is in hot water after it admitted to slowing down older iPhone models.

The tech giant says it took the measure to make aging batteries last longer, but consumers

are not convinced and are suing the firm.

Park Ji-won has more.

In the U.S., iPhone owners from several states, including Illinois, Ohio, Indiana and North

Carolina, filed lawsuits against Apple in federal courts in Chicago and Los Angeles

late last week.

They claim Apple violated consumer fraud laws by staying silent on the deliberate slowing

down of their devices to push them to buy newer, more expensive iPhones.

They also claim that the tech giant company never requested consent from users about the

slowdowns of their iPhones,... and users didn't give consent to the company to interfere with

their devices.

The complaints have spread to Israel, with users filing a 125 million U.S.-dollar class-action

lawsuit against Apple on Monday,... for breaching its basic duties toward users by failing to

disclose that software updates would have a negative impact on the performance of their

phones.

Apple officially announced last week that the software updates were meant to fix the

irregularities of the older smartphone models,... and to prevent the devices from unexpectedly

shutting down.

iPhone 6, 6S, SE and iPhone 7 models have been affected by the software update.

Korean gov't to levy taxes on clergy from 2018 onwards - Duration: 0:41.

Religious groups in Korea will lose their tax-exempt status from next year.

The move was sealed on Tuesday when the Cabinet signed off on the government's new tax code

revision.

It's expected that cash and compensation received after religious services, including voluntary

work provided by clergy members, will be recognized as part of their income, and will be taxed

in a similar way to income tax.

The National Finance Institute expects taxing religious groups will add more than 55 million

U.S. dollars to state coffers each year.

Some religious organizations, such as the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church of

Korea, have already been paying taxes voluntarily.

to peacefully resolve the nuclear crisis.

The country's RIA news agency reported on Monday that Sergei Lavrov said Moscow was

ready to facilitate such negotiations.

Lavrov said his government can step in because Russia and North Korea have diplomatic relations,...

unlike the U.S. and North Korea.

Pope Francis touches on Middle East conflict, inter-Korean tensions in Christmas remarks - Duration: 1:57.

Pope Francis gave his annual Christmas Day address in Saint Peters Square on Monday.

It was filled with remarks on the current tensions on the Korean Peninsula and between

Israel and Palestine.

Ro Aram reports.

The pontiff's speech had its usual encouragement of peace and stability around the world.

Of course he did not leave out tensions surrounding North Korea.

(Italian) AP - 4132250 / 1 "We see Jesus in the children worldwide wherever

peace and security are threatened by the danger of tensions and new conflicts.

Let us pray that confrontation may be overcome on the Korean peninsula, and that mutual trust

may increase in the interest of the world as a whole."

Pope Francis has previously expressed concern about the harsh rhetoric between U.S. President

Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The pope also used Monday's address to take what seemed like another swipe at Trump for

his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

(Italian) AP - 4132250 / 1 "We see Jesus in the children of the Middle

East, who continue to suffer because of growing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians.

On this festive day, let us ask the Lord for peace for Jerusalem and for all the Holy Land.

Let us pray that the will to resume dialogue may prevail between the parties and that a

negotiated solution can finally be reached - one that would allow the peaceful coexistence

of two States within mutually agreed and internationally recognized borders."

His remarks came a few days after 128 countries, including several American allies, backed

a UN resolution rejecting Trump's decision.

Other issues the pontiff touched upon include the ongoing crisis in Myanmar, where he had

recently visited, and he called for the protection of the dignity of minority groups in that

region.

Global economic growth to reach fastest rate in seven years in 2018 - Duration: 2:00.

Our top story this afternoon...

As 2017 starts to wind down,... investment banks have crunched their numbers and released

their growth projections for the global economy in 2018.

Overall it makes good reading,... especially for South Korea which is forecast to further

cement its position as one of the world's strongest economies.

Kim Hyesung reports.

2018 looks set to be a year of good economic growth around the globe.

According to Bloomberg's investment banks' median estimates, the global economic growth

outlook for 2018 is three-point-seven percent.

Goldman Sachs and Barclays were the most bullish, predicting global growth to reach four percent

next year, which would be the highest since 2011's four-point-three percent.

Banks cited the robust cyclical recovery in the Eurozone and stronger growth in the U.S.

backed by tax cuts and increased government spending to bolster global growth.

Advanced economies' solid economic growth is expected to increase global oil demand,

giving a boost to Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

Banks forecast those countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and others, to see a

rebound from this year's zero-point-eight percent to two-point-three percent next year.

China, which has been the driver of the global economy, is expected to see slower growth

next year, a fall from this year's six-point-eight percent to six-point-four percent... as the

country works to rein in growing debt and oversupply.

South Korea, however, is set to see its growth momentum continue, and hit around three percent

again in 2018.

South Korea has enjoyed solid economic growth on the back of its strong exports.

Quarterly data released by the OECD on Monday showed South Korea's third quarter real GDP

recording one-and-a-half percent, the third highest in the G20.
