Hi I'm Leo, this is Sirius and welcome back to our channel, or welcome to our
channel if you're new. I um- today we're going to be going over person first
language versus identity first language and I'll tell you which one I
prefer and why at the end. So person first language was meant to kind of say that the
person that you're talking about is not just- is not just disabled like there's
more to them than their disability. And that's like saying person with autism or
person with a disability and always saying person and then what they've been
diagnosed with instead of saying like the diagnosis and then the person. So
identity first language that's saying like disabled person or autistic person
the way that I learned about it was through like blogs dedicated to autistic
people because it's a- it's not a very widespread thing except for in the Deaf
community because being Deaf is a kind of a part of their identity and I don't
want to speak on behalf of a group I'm not a part of and I don't want to spread
misinformation so if you want to know more about the language that the Deaf
community prefers I- or just more about Deaf culture in general I will link some
channels in the description, um, the channels of Deaf youtubers and you could
always take like- and I highly encourage you to take ASL because ASL is amazing.
You could always just do a quick Google search on Deaf culture or read one of the
textbooks. And I know that, um, at least within the autistic community a lot of
us do prefer to be called autistic people because it impacts the way that
we see the world and
I'll probably be going into that when I explain which one I prefer. Okay, so I did
do a poll on Instagram about which one people preferred and the results were
split about 60-40 with 60% liking person first or person with disability and
about 40% preferring identity first or like autistic person. Okay, so which one
do I prefer? That's complicated because its- depends on the situation for me but
generally I do prefer identity first language. And so I'll call myself an
autistic person or I'll call myself a disabled person and that's because
especially for my autism there is no me without my disability. Like, I was born
autistic and I'll die autistic. There never will be a me without autism and so
calling me "me with-" like- "a person with autism" just feels wrong. But I guess a good way
to think about identity first language, at least in my case, is you wouldn't call
me "a person with queerness" you'd call me "a queer person" and that's not saying
that all I am is queer, it's just acknowledging that- (rustling sounds) that like- that queer
is a- is something that is a part of me and it does kind of define me. Being queer
and being autistic, they both define me. And there's no me if I wasn't queer or
autistic. And it just feels wrong to kind of try to separate that part out from me.
So the part about person first that I like, that I don't think is talked about
nearly enough, is- oh hi, beautiful boy- is the person first behavior and that can be summarized as
assuming competence. And don't assume that because I had this disability that
I can't advocate for myself. Like I've had doctors who the second I
walked into the room start talked to my parents and completely don't talk to me
and when they do talk to me it's- it's- (starts speaking really slowly with over enunciation and cheerfulness) it's like this!
O,h hi Leo! Hi Leo! How are you? (Resumes normal speaking voice) And it's just embarrassing for both of us because
I'm not 5. I'm 16. But at the same time I don't want assuming competence to come
at the expense of acknowledging and respecting my limits because there are
things that I can't do and, um . . . or things that I need help doing. And it just makes
everything worse when people don't respect the limits. Bottom line: assume
competence but if someone sets a limit or a boundary respect it. All right well
I think that I've just about covered anything. Once again, if you want to know
