6 Reasons To Read THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas - Duration: 8:50.
Hey guys! It's Trina and today I'm going to be talking about The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.
This is a 2017 debut novel which came out in March and I loved this book to pieces.
I gave it a 5 star rating and so far this year it is the best book that I have read.
In this video I'm going to tell you guys what the book is about in case you haven't heard
about it yet, and then I'm going to give you a few reasons why I think you should read
it, and then at the end I'll give a brief review of this book's quality as a debut novel.
The Hate U Give is a story about our main character named Starr who is a black teenager
living in a poor neighborhood but she actually commutes to go to a private school where most
of the students are white and she's one of the very few black students that attends.
Starr is coming home from a party one night, she is riding in the car with one of her childhood
best friends, Khalil, and Khalil is pulled over because his car has a busted taillight.
The situation escalates and the police officer that pulls them over, who was a white man,
ends up shooting and killing Khalil.
This police officer's side of the story says that he felt his life was being threatened
and he thought that they were going to pull a gun on him but Starr was in the car and
she knows that there was no gun, and they were not threatening the officer, and they
were trying to cooperate with him but Starr has to decide if she wants to speak up and
use her voice to talk about what really happened because the media has already started painting
Khalil as just like a basic thug.
As you can probably tell, this book was inspired by the #BlackLivesMatter movement and there's
so much more going on in this book than that but that is really the thing that sets off
this book and the whole rest of the story.
This is an #ownvoices book, which means that the main character and the author are both
black women, so the representation of race in this book comes from a place of experience with the author.
And I do want to encourage you guys, please look up some #ownvoices reviewers for this
book that can talk to you guys more about the representation of it.
There are a couple of BookTubers that I follow that I know have done an individual video
review for The Hate U Give.
I know India from BooksAndBigHair has done one, and so has Kashawn from TheBookArcher.
I'll put links to their reviews down in the description of mine and I highly encourage
you to check out their reviews.
Now I want to give you guys 6 reasons why you should read it.
If you like books that explore these themes, or these ideas, this is probably one that you would enjoy.
So, the first reason I think you should pick this book up is because it is super relevant.
Like I said, it was inspired by the #BlackLivesMatter movement and I think that if you are on social
media in any aspect, or even if you watch the news and you see these stories of minorities
who are being shot and killed by police for something really basic like a traffic stop,
whether or not you are familiar with these news stories and with the #BlackLivesMatter
movement, I think that this book is really information, and relevant, and relateable.
If you already know what these movements are all about, I think you will really relate
to this story, but if you aren't familiar with why all these hashtags exist and why
this keeps happening, and you don't know why there's a controversy between #BlackLivesMatter
and #AllLivesMatter I also think this book is really informative at explaining why the
#BlackLivesMatter movement is very important.
I really think everyone will get something out of this book and that it really speaks to current events.
The second reason I think you will like this one is if you like books that are very empowering.
This story is all about finding your voice, and I really loved the emphasis on your voice
is the best weapon that you have.
I loved watching Starr struggle with how she wanted to use her voice because she had some
very real and valid reasons on why she might not want to speak up, and then throughout
the story you see her learning what she wants to do and the stand that she wants to take.
So, it's definitely a very empowering story all about finding your voice.
Reason number three why I think you would like this book is if you enjoy books that
are all about staying true to yourself.
So in the summary like I told you guys, Starr lives in a poor neighborhood and she goes
to a private school full of rich white kids and she leads two different lives.
At home in her neighborhood, in her community, she feels like she is her real self but when
she's at school she feels like she's a different person.
Like, she has these different elements to her own personality that she kind of tries to hide.
She feels like she can't speak out about all of the things that she wants to because then
people would just see her as the "angry black girl."
She even has two totally separate friend groups that she doesn't let overlap very much and
over the course of this story Starr starts to learn how to merge her two lives together
and just be herself fully.
The fourth reason that I think you would enjoy this book is the way that it handles friendships.
Starr has a lot of really supportive friends in her life, but one of the things I loved
most about this book is it actually takes a toxic friendship and it approaches that
in a very healthy way.
In a lot of books, I feel like whenever there is a toxic friendship it's not really presented
as toxic, it's just kind of presented as well they're just mean girls, that's just how things are.
Or it's like exploring the loss of a friendship after that's happened.
But The Hate U Give is actually showing us the process of a friendship that used to be
very close starting to deteriorate throughout the course of the story and how Starr wants to handle that.
Starr and her mom have a really great heart to heart about friendships that I really enjoyed
and just seeing Starr weigh this friendship and what her friend's actions are doing, I
just really appreciated how this book looked at a toxic friendship and I think that is something
that I want to see more of in YA books because friendships do end and sometimes they are toxic.
The fifth reason why I think you should read this book is if you love books with a very
very strong family dynamic.
Both of Starr's parents play a very large role in her life and in the story.
She has siblings, a grandmother, an aunt and uncle who helped raise her, cousins, and even
her entire community who's basically treated like family.
I really loved the family and the community aspect and the dynamic between all of them in this book.
I thought it was so strong and it made everything just feel so so real.
If you love books that explore a character and who they are because of where they come
from and because of their family and the influence that they had in their life, this is definitely
a book I think you would enjoy.
And reason number six why I think you would like this book is if you like books that give you all the feels.
And I'm not kidding. I mean ALL of the feels.
It'll make you laugh out loud, it will make you cry.
It will make you so angry and then so happy.
This book does it all.
I really feel like that is a mark of great writing, so if you love books that are a full
emotional journey, this is definitely one I think you will love.
So those are six things that I think that if you look for those topics in books or you
like books that explore those, I definitely think you will enjoy The Hate U Give.
Now I want to talk more about it as a 2017 debut. I've come up with a list of questions
that I ask myself about the debuts that I'm reading, so I'm just going to go through those really quickly.
The first question that I am asking myself about the debuts I read this year is
why did I pick it up and did it deliver what it said it would?
I picked this book up simply because of the hype.
Hype is something that will make me interested in a book and this one was getting a lot of
hype and a lot of press, it got a ton of starred reviews very very early on, so I had known
about this book for a really long time and I definitely wanted to read it and see if
it was worth all of that hype.
And the answer of did it deliver?
It definitely did.
I thought it stood up to all of that hype.
I was not disappointed.
The second debut question I have is did this book feel like the author's first work?
And the simple answer to that is no way.
The writing, the world building in terms of like bringing this community, this neighborhood,
and this school to life, and the characterization, even the side characters - Angie Thomas has
built such a highly developed world and characters and story, and she does not feel like a debut author!
She feels like a seasoned pro.
Her writing is phenomenal and she has written so many different types of scenes
and different vibes in this book.
She goes from writing a shooting, to a day at school, to a basketball game, to a funeral,
to riots and protests, to a family dinner, to prom and she does all of these things without
even missing a beat.
It really is one of the deepest, most well developed, realest, and more relateable books
that I have ever read. The next question for this debut that I have is
does this book make me want to read more by this author?
And that answer is a resounding yes.
I will absolutely read Angie Thomas's next book.
I don't even need to know what it is about.
I do know that she has a book deal and I think she has said it is set in the same neighborhood
as The Hate U Give but it's not like a direct sequel.
I will be reading that book.
It is going to be an auto-read book for me because I really loved her writing and the
storytelling so much! It was incredible.
I will definitely be reading her next book, and probably the one after that, and the one after that.
And finally I want to end this video by just saying do I recommend this book?
Absolutely. I would recommend this book to anybody.
I think anyone could get something out of it, be it an informative story, or be it a
very relateable story, and I really just loved it.
There was not a SINGLE thing about this book that I did not like.
I definitely, absolutely recommend this book without hesitation.
I loved it.

When To Collect Social Security Retirement Benefits - Duration: 6:23.
Hello everyone, today I'd like to discuss
why you should take social security
benefits at age 62 as opposed to 66 or
67 or 70. For those of you who don't live
in this country, Social Security is the
government program where they take a
nice big chunk of your paycheck about
seven and a half percent, and they also
make your employer kick in seven and
half percent so they take fifty percent
of your pay each week. And they do
this for decades upon decades then when
you get old, you hopefully have
something waiting for you. But I put
together a spreadsheet to show you why you
should take it at 62. You know I go
online and look at different blogs and
finance articles and almost all of them
say wait until you're 70. Wait until
you're 70. But I'm going to convince you
otherwise I believe. Okay, I put together a
simple spreadsheet, these are actual
numbers from www ssa.gov estimating my
monthly benefit if I take it at age 62
eighteen hundred dollars. these are US
dollars, take it at age 67 2,700 take it
at 70 3,425. Now doesn't it look like
wow I should wait because 18 times
two is almost 34, you're almost getting
double. Wow I think I should wait. But I
put together a spreadsheet here and I'm
going to convince you that that is
incorrect thinking. So say a claim at 62
three years later I'm 65 I've got a
nice little amount of money and the
other people who opted to collect later
did get nothing (anything). Age 70 age 62 I'm still
winning the race I'm winning the game.
Because I took it early, age 67 has a few
years under his belt and age 70 has
nothing because they're just
starting to collect. The reason I chose
65 and 70 is because my mother passed at
65 and my father passed at 70, and they
were smart, they elected to take it at
age 62.
And they received money. If they wait
until seventy, they both work their
whole lives, they put in all this money
they would have gotten a cent. So I don't
like the system with the different ages
they should allow some lower ages even
to collect the lesser benefit to get
something. But let's go ahead and take a
look at age 70. As you can see we're
starting to converge here with with the
money but age 62 still winning 13 years
later I'm sitting pretty at age 75, 13
years after I started collecting. Age 80
we scroll this over a little more, there we
go. Age 80, finally see a convergence
where 62 is finally losing out age 67 is
actually the winner here, you just add
raw dollars up. And I did a little
thing here, the one thing if you start
your benefits at age 62 you get the time
value of money. You get to use that money
for so many years. So I put together a
little formula here if you invest that
money instead of spending it, your social,
social security money you invested at
four percent and age 62 wins again. Very
simple, and one of the reason you should
take it as early as possible is I want
you to think think in your life how many
people you know 70 75 80 85 90
especially age 80 where everyone seems
to break even. What is their quality of
life like? Are they still alive are they
able to enjoy this this extra money if
they wait till 70? I went to
socialsecurity.gov, ssa.gov and got the
mortality rates and it's a bit
unfortunate for men, for every 100,000
men born, fifty thousand plus are still
alive at age 80. So that's something to
think about right there. If you're a man
and you take it you wait until 70 by the
time you reach 80 there's a fifty
percent change won't be alive to enjoy
the waiting part when you've waited for
the mone,y you've waited for that extra
benefit. And for women it's a bit better.
For a hundred thousand women born, 63,000
will still be alive at age 80 so you've
got the women longevity. If you're a
woman you might want to think of taking
it late.
But just looking at the raw numbers,
once again the media says wow you can
almost get double if you collected 70, which
is true. 18 times two is 36 and here you
get 34, but I highly recommend, you know
life is so short. Just waiting and
waiting. Iv'e in laws over 82 and 83.
They did collect early which is fine but
you know money when you're in your 80's does money even almost matter
at that point. You're ill or you are gone or
there are so many things going on your
life. And one other thing (the Sun the
Sun disappeared here have will get a
little dark) one other thing I know in
the U.S. if you have little
money you have to go into a home like an
old folks home, they will take your
entire social security check as payment
no matter what the amount. So why
would you wait until you're 70 years old
and get the big check just to give it to
some home, when you can start enjoying it
at age 62. It really made me feel good to
see my mother and father enjoy their
money early. So I know there are
disagreeing opinions on this and there's
so many ways to run the math and tax
implications, but I'm all for 62 I'm 52
years old I'm going to retire in 10
years I'm definitely taking the money. If
there are calculators online that
you can log into, the government, log in
ssa.gov you can login look your own
benefits and do your own math it's very
simple math. Hope I convinced you, I convinced myself among my wife so
life is precious and short I don't
want to wait until 70 to start enjoying
the fruits of years of contributing to
this program, life is so short why should
I have to wait until I am 70. You
know can I even walk, do I even function
at that point. People think they're going
to live forever that's why the
government, that's why the media is trying
to convince you to wait until you're 70.

These Abandoned Theme Parks Are Super Creepy - Duration: 5:45.
Whether you see them as poignant relics of the past, or simply as urban playgrounds for
the daring, abandoned theme parks have an unmistakably creepy draw to them.
But look beyond the spooky photos and eerily creaking Ferris wheels, and you'll find that
many of these abandoned theme parks hide chilling secrets more spine-tingling than a sweater
full of spiders.
Disney's River Country
In the late '70s, Disney was the hot kid on the block.
Following the success of Disney World, the Imagineers set their sights on a different
sort of attraction: a backwoods river getaway in the Florida swampland.
Built in 1976, the park actually did pretty well.
It rolled along until 2005, then closed its doors suddenly and without explanation.
Rumors about the sudden closing abounded.
At least two children drowned in the park, but the most common explanation was the park's
water facilities had become infected with an amoeba that swims up through a person's
nose and eats away pieces of their brain — until they die.
For whatever reason, Disney shut the park down, then seemingly forgot about it.
It's now become an overgrown jungle where dingy water slides still wind through the
encroaching trees, and the pools lay dormant, filled with murky green water that definitely,
most likely, probably, maybe hides some kind of human-murdering Black Lagoon monster.
"Really?"
"Nah.
I'm just screwing with you."
Spreepark
Germany's Spreepark was built in former East Berlin, just after the fall of the Berlin
Wall.
Today, it's a gutted, rusting remnant of the post-unification economic splurge.
A Ferris wheel looms over the trees, beached pirate ships are slowly disappearing under
creeping vines, and a lone roller coaster track runs into the gaping mouth of a graffiti-covered
monster.
Built in 1989, it was a popular attraction until the mid-'90s, then slowly sank into
a sea of insolvency.
It closed in 2001, and in 2003, its builder was arrested when police found a reported
167 kilograms of Peruvian cocaine inside the mast of one of the rides, the Flying Carpet.
And here tourists thought they were just going on an ordinary magic carpet ride.
Kejonuma Leisure Land
At its peak in the '80s, more than 200,000 tourists flocked to Kejonuma Leisure Land
each year.
Located in central Japan, Leisure Land boasted a small-but-impressive collection of fairground
rides that kept the park humming for over 20 years, until it finally shut down in 2000.
Now, it's been reclaimed by nature.
Most of the rides are still standing, although they've been crippled by rust and choking
weeds in the intervening years.
Visit it at night, and it's easily one of the eeriest abandoned parks in the world,
but there's another reason why locals prefer not to visit the ruins: a supposed ancient
curse on the land.
As the legend goes, there's a small pond just outside the theme park that holds the tormented
soul of a young mother.
She lived near the pond, and one day found that she was pregnant.
Instead of a child, though, she supposedly gave birth to a snake, which slithered into
the pond and called out to her.
Driven insane by her snake-child's cries, the woman dove into the pond and committed
suicide.
Even the name of the region itself, Kejonuma, translates to "pond of the ghost woman."

Dude that's creepy."
Blub Water Park
You wouldn't guess it from the name or its current state, but Blub was once one of Germany's
most popular water parks.
It ran for two decades before an unlikely invader forced the owner to drain the pools
and lock everyone out.
Sometime in the late '90s, Blub was overrun by rats.
The park fought the vermin back and managed to shamble along for another few years, but
it was a losing battle, especially once the public realized what was happening.
In 2002, Blub declared bankruptcy and abandoned the massive facility to the rats living in
its walls.
Now, it has all the eerie charm you'd expect from a derelict water park … huge in-ground
pools, empty swimming grottoes, and dried-up water slides that end in a long drop to unforgiving
tile.
Chippewa Lake Park
If you approached Chippewa Lake Park before 2010, the first thing you would have seen
was an ancient roller coaster rail peeking over the tops of the trees, like the hand
of a giant beckoning you closer.
By then, the park had been derelict for over three decades, after being abandoned in 1978.
And for years, the old roller coasters, Ferris wheel, and buildings slid beneath the choking
underbrush, and then a spate of arson in the early 2000s burned out most of the large structures
to the ground.
In 2010, the property was sold, and partially demolished, before everything came to a halt
over a lawsuit.
The rest of the former amusement park now sits in the twilight of death, waiting for
someone to finish putting it out of its misery.
And speaking of death, there's supposedly an unmarked grave hiding somewhere amid the
towering, skeletal structures of Chippewa Lake Park, like an Easter Egg from Hell.
The park's final owner, Parker Beach, allegedly requested to be buried in the park he'd loved
so much.
Whether or not it ever happened is up for debate, but it's definitely not something
you want to think about as you poke through the overgrown ruins, in the final moments
of daylight.

personal dramas unfold.
But be warned, this is one series that isn't afraid to kill off even its biggest stars,
so invest in some tissues before giving this one a whirl and prepare to ugly cry away.
The Office
If you love comedy, but you've somehow never seen The Office, drop everything and get started
here.
The premise is simple: a film crew follows Michael Scott and his employees at the Scranton
paper company Dunder Mifflin.
Every hilariously awkward situation that follows will captivate you — until Netflix starts

Ron Swanson, you're sure to laugh — and constantly change your mind about your favorite
character.

How I Met Your Mother
There was a lot of outrage about How I Met Your Mother's series finale, but so much time
has passed that it's totally okay to binge all nine seasons again, right?
Following Ted's journey to find true love never gets old, even if you've watched it
all unfold before.
And if you haven't?
Fans of Friends will probably love How I Met Your Mother because of its similar six-person
ensemble format.
But chances are, you'll be a little more emotionally invested in this series than the former because
while there are plenty of laughs, there are just as many tears flowing on this show.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
This Netflix original is one of the all-time best.
Starring Ellie Kemper, the show follows cult escapee Kimmy Schmidt as she gets reacquainted
with the real world.
Written by and occasionally starring comedic genius Tina Fey, the show offers the same
fast paced wit that made 30 Rock such a winner, and it's just all-around feel good fun, despite
the heavy subject matter of its basis.
And that theme song?
It's pretty much perfect.

Orange is the New Black
Speaking of Netflix originals, Orange Is the New Black is a series you can't miss.
The reason why everyone is so obsessed with it?
Because it's so good.
Created by the same mind that brought us Showtime's Weeds, Jenji Kohan, this show nimbly walks
the line between deep drama and utter hilarity as it presents the life and times of the female
inmates of Litchfield Penitentiary.
It's got a compelling narrative that no one can get enough of.
The Mindy Project
You'll need a Hulu subscription for this one, but seriously — it's worth it.
Mindy Kaling plays Mindi Lahiri, an obstetrician/gynecologist in New York who tries to live her life as
if she's the heroine of a romantic comedy — but hilariously fails.
Friday Night Lights
There's so much goodness contained in this small-town football drama that it's hard to
narrow down the best part of it.
From Coach Taylor's inspirational speeches …
"Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose."

… to his ultra-realistic marriage and fatherhood journeys to the free tutorials on the Xs and

As each tree of life unfolds in your mind, you begin to see that all is connected and
that the mind is the center of consciousness, because while yet not proven scientifically
there is surmounting evidence that the center of the universe is consciousness itself.
When you connect your body and mind to this eternal consciousness, you CAN achieve ever
lasting life.

Why Hollywood Won't Cast Edward Furlong Anymore - Duration: 4:16.
With the release of 1991's Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Edward Furlong catapulted from anonymous
13-year-old to teen idol superstar.
His debut as youthful renegade John Connor earned him an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakout
Performance, and he went on to star alongside some of Hollywood's top talents, including
Liam Neeson, Meryl Streep, and Edward Norton.
And then… he vanished.
From a troubled home life to substance abuse issues, and even a bizarre run-in with some
lobsters, here's a look at why Edward Furlong hasn't been in the spotlight for some time.
Family matters
The announcement that Furlong had been cast in T2 spurred a heated custody battle between
his birth mother and his surrogate parents, who were also acting as his managers.
That got even more complicated two years later, when, at the age of 15, Furlong got engaged
to his former tutor, 29-year-old Jacqueline Domac.
His former guardians attempted to charge Domac with statutory rape, but the relationship
imploded on its own, with Domac claiming Furlong was physically abusive while suing him for
withholding funds she'd earned as his manager.
Destructive tendencies
Like so many other child actors, Furlong's career took a nosedive due to self-destructive
behavior, which landed him in rehab in 2000 for cocaine and alcohol.
A year later, he was hospitalized for an overdose, then got busted twice in the same night, once
for driving without a license and then again for a DUI.
The resulting string of court ordered rehab stints derailed his comeback attempt and prevented
him from reprising his role as John Connor in 2003's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,
with the part going to Nick Stahl instead.
From hero to villain
By 2004, Furlong's career had headed straight to video.
While working on the indie film Jimmy and Judy in September of that year, Furlong — a
member of PETA — was arrested in a Kentucky grocery store for drunkenly attempting to
free live lobsters from a display tank.
It was on the set of Jimmy and Judy that he also met co-star and future wife Rachael Bella.
The two married in 2006 and had a son, Ethan, just five months later, but their relationship
proved to be a rocky one.
Bella ended up filing several restraining orders after he allegedly beat her during
a drug binge.
She separated from him in 2009 and later filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences
following a string of terrifying voicemails where he threatened to, "beat her and
her new boyfriend with chains and bats."
In yet another dark and tragic turn, Furlong was barred from contact with his son after
the 6-year-old tested positive for cocaine after being in his custody.
His run-ins with the law don't seem to have bothered him too much, though.
Here's what he had to say to TMZ upon being released from jail in 2013.
"I was at Disneyland!
Yeah!"
"Anaheim?"
"What?"
"What ride did you go to on Disneyland?"
"It was called jail!
Haha!"
Days of future past
At this point, the sheen of Furlong's childhood success has long since worn off.
Staying relevant in Hollywood as a former child actor is hard enough, but as a notorious
party guy with a rap sheet as long as his arm, it's nearly impossible.
Still, while Furlong hasn't had any high profile gigs in a long time, he still has his foot
in the door, keeping busy with small roles in indie projects such as the YouTube series
Star Trek: Renegades.
The price of fame
When Furlong was just 15, A Home of Our Own director Tony Bill wrote a letter to Furlong's
agent, warning him that "Eddie Furlong didn't choose the movies, the movies chose him and
it has taken a heavy toll."
After literally being cast on a Pasadena street corner, Furlong was swept up into a world
of fame and fortune that turned into a life of vice and disappointment.
But if there's one thing Hollywood loves, it's a redemption story, so who knows.
After all…
"The futures not set.
There's no fate but what we make for ourselves."

YouTube Stars Who Haven't Figured Out They Aren't Famous Anymore - Duration: 4:12.
At one point it seemed like just about anyone could use YouTube as a launchpad to fame.
But it turns out that people can become anonymous again just as fast as they can become famous
in the first place.
Sure, some YouTube sensations stay in the limelight, like Justin Bieber or Tyler Oakley.
But others just fall by the wayside no matter how hard they try to stay relevant.
Here's a look at some YouTubers that haven't figured out they aren't famous anymore.
WHATTHEBUCK
Michael Buckley, best known for his YouTube series What the Buck?!, was quite popular
between 2007 and 2010.
Buckley was well-known for his comedic takes on pop culture news at the time, particularly
as it related to teen pop sensations.
His biggest trending moment came after a legion of angry fangirls attacked him for making
fun of one of the Jonas Brothers falling on stage.
He responded by posting a video of himself reading their nasty comments.
"Eff you!
They rock, jackass!
You're effing jealous of them and they are hot.
And their music is super cool, so haha, stick that in your mother-effin' juice box and suck it!"
Those glory days didn't last long, though.
Even though he still boasts more than a million subscribers, that seems to be mainly because
fans are too lazy to unsubscribe, as most of his recent videos have struggled to even
reach ten thousand views.
That's a massive drop for someone who was once at the top of the YouTube heap.
"In 2008, I was at a YouTube bowling tournament and I won!"
Esmee Denters
Esmee Denters was set to be another breakout YouTube pop sensation in the vein of Justin
Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen after her cover of Justin Timberlake's "What Goes Around"
went viral in 2007.
The video even featured background vocals and an appearance by Timberlake himself, helping
Denters become one of the first YouTube stars to exceed 100 million views.
"Sings my song better than me."
"No, that's not true."
"Haha!"
"This is the man right here!"
Since then, though, it's been a mixed bag.
Denters had some moderate success in Europe in 2009 and 2010, but was eventually dropped
from her record label.
She tried to jump start things with an appearance on the British version of The Voice in 2015,
but was eliminated during the knockout rounds.
These days she's still posting songs to YouTube, but with most of her videos only getting a
couple thousand views, she's pretty much back where she started.
Here's hoping better things lay ahead.
Greyson Chance
When then 12-year-old Greyson Chance's cover of Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" went viral in 2010,
people thought we'd finally had found our anti-Justin Bieber, especially after his much
hyped appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
"You put this up on, first you put it up on your Facebook and then you put it up on YouTube.
And you just think it would be fun just to put it up on YouTube and it's crazy how many
hits this has now."
But the stardom didn't last.
Although Chance's album Hold On 'Til The Night hit the top 30 on the Billboard charts, within
a short time, the internet's collective attention span had moved on to other hit YouTube musicians.
Such as this legend of the form:
"Meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow-me-me-meow."
Greyson still has a small following, but it's a far cry from the 58 million people who watched
that first "Paparazzi" cover, which may be why he's already trying to stage a comeback
at just 19 years old.
"Now I'm on the verge of adulthood with a new team and a new album.
I'm back and better than ever."
Karmin
If you look at the Boston-based pop duo Karmin now, you'll probably see them as just one
YouTube cover channel out of many.
But in 2011, couple Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan seemed destined for breakout music
success thanks to several viral covers of songs by popular R&B and rap artists, including
a cover of Chris Brown's "Look at me Now" which got over 100 million views.
"Look at me now!
Look at me now!
Whoahhh, I'm getting paper!"
Karmin took their new popularity and ran with it, but the resulting 2012 EP Hello was not
well received.
Rolling Stone reviewer Jody Rosen said of Karmin "Viral video-stars-turned-major-label
recording artists Karmin [have] a great back-story.
They also have one of the most aggressively obnoxious debut albums in recent memory [...] Karmin
can make you hate pop music."
Ouch!
Despite the negative reviews, their single "Brokenhearted" still got over 34 million
views back in 2012, and their 2014 single "Acapella" topped 35 million.
But recent videos rarely barely get a fraction of that even though their original YouTube
channel still has over 1.5 million legacy subscribers.
That's enough to leave anyone…brokenhearted.
"So, can we fix what started.
