What's wrong with me?!
Hello!! Welcome back to my channel!
I have a special guest that will be with me for today
Aly: HI! I'm Alyssa.
So.. What will we do for today?
We will talk about the language deprivation between
a hearing child and deaf child.
Everything related to that.
We will cover bases with this
and why should we teach sign language to babies?
SO.. Before we start with this video,
we have already researched all the facts
from one website called, "nyledimarcofoundation.com"
We will add those facts from that website to our video.
So, we hope that you will understand we feel when it comes to
deaf and hearing babies
related to sign language and deprivation.
Okay hmm.
Research has proven that if you teach your baby how to sign
it will improve their cognitive and emotional development.
Since what she said, it will increases the rate of verbal development.
verbal development is like you are teaching a hearing baby how to speak in the words
and it goes the same thing as a deaf baby
but they will use sign language, just like a different method to communicate with their parents.
Didn't you know that 3 out of 1,000 children are deaf or hard of hearing
and can you imagine a person who is deaf and got his/her language deprived.
Language deprivation means when you take away their own first language
which it is ASL.
So we will explain more about that deprivation and how do we, deaf people feel when
hearing parents deprived their deaf babies' first language
Okay, I want you to imagine yourself in one situation
if you had deaf and hearing babies
you would do anything for your hearing baby right?
so try to imagine a scenario with your deaf baby and
you should do everything but you chose to not
you would pick a way to communicate with your deaf baby by using the voices and
your deaf baby is forced to learning how to speak
your deaf baby is not allowed to learn the ASL
or given what your deaf baby need the most and you just teach them how to speak.
What would it happen when your deaf child grow up as an adult and I might have a few great ideas about that.
Maybe your deaf child will have a lack of understanding the concept of communication
lack of emotion responses, education, and several other things.
ONLY if you didn't teach your deaf baby how to sign
Okay so, it's very sad for me to see that because I've met so many deaf people and
they usually to have the lack of education, they don't learn very much and they tends to have lowest level of education.
I knew that they are smart but they were not given much of education where it created a barrier.
WE NEED TO CHANGE THAT
That is a problem
It's like I said before,
if your child had a disability like limbs, crippling or any kinds of disabilities
and you WOULD do anything for her or him right?
but you didn't do any of those things to your deaf child.
(for an example) you forced them to get a cochlear implant and didn't give them a chance to have the choices
like you are trying to get all ways for them to follow the hearing world just like yours
BUT where is that deaf child's choices?
Where is their first language?
So.. It's really sad.
like when deaf people have their language and we are communicating to each other in ASL
and why should they (hearing people) deprive our language if we already had one?
Why should we follow the hearing world's ways and forced to learn how to speak
Why do we just have to do is just follow their ways at all times and it is not the way to show who we are.
We deaf people would feel like we are aliens on different planet and bows down to them
Which we SHOULD not.
We need to focus on our own people because we are DEAF and focus with our culture
not their culture you know?
Hey, I'm not trying to preach. no no no.
I was just trying to tell you how do we feel about this topic.
It's like when a blind person and imagine that they were taken away from using their canes
or anything else that they need the most and
you forced them to walk and see but they CAN'T see.
It's same with a deaf person when their first language got taken away from us.
like everything
Did you know that if you teach a hearing baby how to learn to sign and it benefits them more
like verbal development and different beneficials.
but some people decided to not teach deaf babies how to sign, like what's the difference?
Why did you go ahead to teach the signs to your hearing baby not deaf baby?
WHAT is the difference?
What made you stop from doing that?
What did it made you do that?
It made me feel indignant
because I have a few friends who told me that they would teach their hearing babies to learn how to sign
and their babies would have two languages which it's cool
maybe more mental development or whatever.
but they told me that they rather not to teach their deaf babies not to learn how to sign if they had.
I was like why are you willing to teach your hearing baby how to sign but not to deaf baby?
LIKE WHY?
It bothers me a lot.
What's the difference? There is nothing difference really.
It's just same
While I was watching Nyle's video and a lot of things has hit me hard.
because I can relate to that.
there is one sentence that Nyle made a statement about it,
it made me feel very touched.
Nyle said that when your kid grow up if you taught your kid how to use verbal where it develops and your kid will be able to say "I love you" back.
It made me feel amazed and shook.
Because.. hmm. for you guys who don't know that I was raised in a hearing family and there is none sign language were used.
I was forced to speak and got a cochlear implant.
I didn't learn ASL until I entered high school
I always resent my mom for that because I felt like I was not belonged to that hearing world
I felt like nobody can understand who am I
because I'm just deaf and that's how I am
Why did they force me to be someone else?
So that was when I first learned ASL and everything else
my mom was like rather not to have me learn ASL because
it made me feel like grateful for what I was proven in HS because I'm happy to know ASL now.
I feel like finally now I can express myself and who am I.
It's sad because when you think about if you had a deaf kid and then they grew up
it's very normal for you guys to love that child and you want your child to love you the same way.
If you tried to take all of those things away from that child who needs to be proven with things that they need to grow up with.
That what will a deaf child feel hatred for parents just like she said.
she hated her own mother when she was a little kid.
Can you just imagine that feeling? Isn't that awful feeling?
Right?
So it would be great if you are willing to do anything for your deaf baby.
like you WOULD do anything for your kid, right? So why not you do the same thing for your deaf baby?
Yeah.. That's what we wanted to talk about and tell how do we feel
It's just really sad you know?
We really hope that hearing parents will realize that they should provide everything what a deaf baby need.
It should go the same way as a hearing baby's needs.
Please not try to treat them differently and I'm completely understandable that if you never had this experience with a deaf baby
like the different environment or a completely different new experience when you holds a deaf baby.
like you don't know what to do next?
I understand it
don't worry because it's not your fault since you don't know anything else about deaf culture
it's fine!!
But it's important that you ARE WILLING to do something for your deaf child.
It's really important for you do that.
like you will give them a love and be willing to support. That kid will learn a lot of stuffs
just like you want them to be
Remember you are not only one
If you have no clue to do what next, don't worry! We are here to help and you can go on internet
