Waching daily Apr 30 2017

When it comes to work-life balance there is a really big difference between

Germany and the U.S.

Hey everyone! I'm Dana and you're watching Wanted Adventure Living abroad.

In English we have two sayings: live to work and work to live.

And in America I always got the feeling that companies often expected people to live to work.

The job was often supposed to be their number one priority.

Everything else came second.

Sometimes the company even came right out and expressed this sentiment.

Whereas other times it was just sort of implied within the company culture.

Of course this is not the case in all companies.

But from my experience, it was like that in many places.

In Germany I would not say that people just work to live, because work is still an important

and valued part of a person's life here, but it just seems like work is more balanced with

life in Germany.

It's like, yes, I work and I put effort into my job and I care, but at the same time,

employers seem to recognize that it's important for the employee to be rested and healthy

and have free time to relax and recharge as well.

Speaking of relaxing and recharging, let's take a look at vacation.

Right out the gate, my first full-time job in Germany: boom, I was given 30 vacation

days, paid, per year.

Not only that but I was expected...or rather actually, kind of required to take them all.

I don't actually know what would have happened if I hadn't taken all my vacation days.

All I know is that around September, October I started getting reminded by my boss that

I hadn't taken all my vacation days yet, and I needed to do so soon.

In the U.S. there is no standard minimum amount of vacation days required by law.

Each company can give their employees however many they want.

Which does sometimes mean that some companies give no paid vacation days at all.

But at some companies you start with, maybe, 7 days of vacation per year and then after

a certain amount of time at that company you slowly get more and more days.

Or maybe at other companies, you get 14 days per year paid vacation and that never changes.

Or at some other companies you get more, you get less.

So, it really just varies in the U.S. from company to company.

However, just because you're given vacation days in the U.S., does not necessarily mean

that you are encouraged to take them.

I always noticed in the U.S. this underlying, sometimes unspoken, sometimes spoken, feeling

of like, you're a more "dedicated employee" the less of your vacation days that you took.

So it was sometimes like: oh, well, look at Paul.

He only took 5 vacation days last year, and you took all your vacation days.

Maybe if you were more like Paul, then you would have gotten a raise too.

And at some companies I remember that you could even cash your vacation days in that

you hadn't taken for money at the end of the year.

So another incentive not to actually take the days off.

But it's not just vacation days that's different.

It's being sick too.

In the U.S. I learned to feel bad about being sick.

Guilty for it.

Like as though I needed to rush back to work as quickly as possible, even if I wasn't

fully healthy yet, just to show the company that I was in fact a dedicated employee and

to stop from getting side-eye looks.

In Germany I could not believe it!

Not only did I not have to feel guilty about being sick.

If I went to work sick that is when I got the side-eye glances and was asked, like,

what are you doing here sick?

You're going to get the rest of the office sick, go home!

And what about when you're having a baby?

In Germany both mothers and fathers are provided by law paid time off after the birth of their

children and mothers are even given paid time off before the birth too.

In the U.S. there is no federal law mandating paid maternity leave, and this actually makes

the U.S. one of the very, very few countries in the world to offer no paid days off to

new mothers.

So my question for you is: How do you feel about work-life balance?

Is there anyone out there who prefers the way that it's done in the U.S.?

And people with children, what's the parental leave been like where you've lived?

Please let me know in the comments below.

Until next time, auf Wiedersehen!

What's the parental leave been like where you've lived?

Where you've...oh yeah, that was right.

There was this often...

It's like, yes, I put work...I put effort and into my work.

The job was often presented as supposed...

How was that?

Love What Matters - Duration: 3:25.

Robert was a librarian at the University of New Hampshire.

and he was a librarian there for 50 years.

Robert was a pretty frugal guy.

He never went out to eat.

He ate TV dinners.

He drove a 1992 Plymouth,

and he loved, he loved to read.

At one point, he decided to read all the books in the library.

He started with the books

that were written in the 1930s

and didn't stop until he had read 1,938 books.

He had read them in chronological order.

Robert died in 2015

and a couple of weeks after he died,

the University of New Hampshire received a check from his estate for

$4 million.

Nobody was expecting it.

Nobody thought that he was worth that kind of money.

And he left only one instruction.

He, he wanted $100,000 of the four million dollars

to go towards the library that he loved so much.

But he said the university was free to use the money,

the rest of the money, in whatever way that they wanted.

And so the university, knowing his great love of reading,

knowing his great love of books,

knowing his severe dislike for anything extravagant,

they decided to use the next million dollars of his estate

on a new scoreboard for the football stadium,

a football stadium that they had just spent $25 million renovating.

Now, the university didn't do anything wrong.

Other than the request for a $100,000

to go towards the library,

he really did say that they could use the money

in whatever way that they wanted.

But there are a lot of people who were very upset with the university

because they felt it was very obvious what Robert loved,

and it seems like what he loved

didn't really matter all that much to anyone.

This week we're going to go through a section of scripture in Luke chapter 16

that shows us very clearly that what you love

really does matter

and it matters to God.

In Luke chapter 16, Jesus told the story about two men,

a rich man and the guy named Lazarus.

And this is how it goes.

This is how it starts.

Two very different lives,

two very different descriptions of what people love during their lives.

And as we'll see during the week,

two very different outcomes for each of those lives.

But the story illustrates the principle that what you love really does matter.

It means something.

And that was the case, even for the person who's telling the story.

Well, what Jesus loved most in his life

was you.

It was you.

"Greater love has no one than this," he once told his disciples,

"that he lay down his life

for his friends."

He considered you his friend.

He loved you

and that made a difference in his life.

It made a difference in how he lived,

in who he spent time with,

in what he taught.

And also made a difference

in how he died,

and why he did.

He died

loving you.

What he loved made a difference in his life,

and what he loved also made a difference in your life.

And that difference is what we'll be talking about this week.

Jesus was excessively rich in his love for you.

Do you have a story about how someone in your life

was excessively rich in their love towards you or for someone else?

We'd love to hear about it and celebrate that love with you.

Leave it in the comments below

and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Walpurgis Night - Duration: 7:13.

hello friends my name is Arith Härger and

why do you always do that?

what?

Saying your name, everybody knows that by now

I'm being polite, introducing myself first

bah! that's a waste of time . . . anyway what

what are you going to talk about today?

yes I was about to say that before you

interrupted me

humpf

well I'm going to talk about the Walpurgis night

ah!

there are probably hundreds of videos about that

yeah most likely

but I want to give my contribution to the subject

bah! rubbish!

and also a waste of time

you know what you should do?!

what?

including me in your videos

more often hehe heh

yeah well, yes yes I suppose I could

one of these days I will

give you a little surprise

hmm I have a bad feeling about that what are you up to?

heh, you will see hue hue hue

alright

right let's get started

Walpurgis night is a celebration that

takes place during the 30th of April

to the first of May and its origins date

back to the pagan fertility rites and

the coming of spring but with the

Christianization of the northern peoples

of Europe this celebration was combined

with a celebration of Valburg or Walburga

which is a celebration held in honor to

a nun with the same name

Walburga, she was a nun who lived in the

8th century and she was born in

England and at some point in her life

she moved to Germany where she founded a

católica convent

it is believed that

she cured the illnesses of local

residents therefore she was canonized by

the miracles she performed she soon

started to be worshipped in a similar

way the pagans worshipped spring and

since the two celebrations are very

close together on the time of these

celebrations are practically the same

the two celebrations

soon

were mixed together and create- and it was

created this Valburg or Walpurgis night

celebration in ancient pagan times this

festivity was often celebrated with

dancing and huge bonfires it was very

similar with the Halloween festivity

in a way that it has to do with

supernatural spirits of both ancestors

and gods but also the land spirits and

the bonfires in in this celebration are

a warm welcome to spring and to receive

the heat and to say farewell to the cold

and harsh winter times

this night also

represented the time when the boundaries

between our world and the world of the

spirits were a bit shaky much like

Halloween or Samhain, this was a time

where when it was possible to

communicate with the spirits and the

spirit world

during this time bonfires

were traditionally lit to keep away

malevolent spirits and those who might

do us harm so summarizing before the

coming or the introduction of

Christianity and the celebration of

Valburg this was a festivity to

celebrate the coming of spring and also

a time to begin a new cycle of farming

and herding

now you have to take in mind

that climate changes a lot and in

ancient times in northern Europe between

winter and spring there wasn't much much

difference it was just the melting of

the snow slowly and animals waking up

from hibernation so as you can see this

celebration is very close to summer so

that was exactly the time our ancestors

our northern ancestors will- would see

the changes in nature and so it was

closer to summer so it was a sort of

spring that they will start their

farming and

the cattle herds would go out there to

into the fields to graze so it's not

like in southern Europe where spring is

just spring and summer is just bloody hot

for instance our Norse ancestors

would not only lit bonfires to keep away

malevolent spirits but also to keep away

wild animals so that the livestock would

not get harmed they would also lit

bonfires to hurry up spring and to purify

nature and they would also mark this day

as the day their are cows their goats

well, their cattle herds would go out

there into the forest at the 1st of May

to begin their summer grazing

nowadays we can still see these pagan

celebrations somehow disguised in the

modern celebration of Walpurgis night in

Sweden for instance people still gather

around bonfires to to dance and to sing

songs to welcome spring people tidy up

their gardens and the leaves and the

branches are a good material to feed the

the bonfires and so are the Christmas

trees that some people keep at home or

keep somewhere to feed the fires at this

very night in Germany this holiday is

still celebrated by dressing in

customs playing pranks on people and

making very loud noises to keep evil at

bay some people still hang blessed

sprigs of foliage in houses and barns to

ward off evil spirits and there are even

those who still leave offerings of bread

spread with butter and honey - to whatever

it is out there that needs to be

appeased

so this harks back to the pagan origins

when people would leave offerings to the

gods and to the ancestors and when I

become a spirit I hope to be in in

Germany during this day because it

sounds delicious and

want to feast like a king

so that's it friends I hope you have enjoyed this

video and this is my little contribution

to the subject all the links to my

social media are down below at the

description thank you so much for

watching see you on the next video and

tack för idag (thank you for today)

Simen i England - tough times (EPISODE 4 - norwegian and english subtitles) - Duration: 12:57.

So, this is not going great...

-What do you think of his first half? -Average.

-Did you expect more? -Yes.

About scoring goals... They learn this in England:

Hit the f***ing target.

F***ing hell, man!

Five matches and no goals.

Five matches and no goals in the ninth division...

It's at times like this you have to show your worth.

Do you just lie down and cry?

Or do you stand up and show them what kind of viking you are?

Hopefully he'll be scoring more goals.

There are days when I wonder why the hell I agreed to this.

Unlucky, Simen! It's coming, mate! It's coming!

Final preparations.

It's always exciting. I've got butterflies.

It's the kick-off soon.

Eriksen. He shoots... And scores!

With Harry Kane off pitch, the Dane of Tottenham assumes responsibility.

Pochettino's team keeps on winning.

How are you? Simen. Nice to meet you.

I have to tell you, I play for Guillem Balague's team Biggleswade Utd.

-Ah, yes? -Yeah.

-Who took the penalty..? -Oh, don't...

-Who took the penalty? -I did. I missed it.

He told me. He sent a text to me. "Ask him about the penalty."

-But you play professionally, no? -I did.

-Clap? -Yeah.

Mauricio Pochettino. So nice to see you.

I've got homework. Which is weird.

I've never been given homework by a coach before.

How to behave on the pitch...

With ball, without ball.

Strangely, Norwegians have been turning up at the matches.

What do you think of the level?

-Well... Interesting. -Yes. A lot of creativity.

And it seems you're allowed to go after the player, not the ball.

Congratulations, Antonio. A big win. It was a tough game.

Yeah. But we certainly won.

Full of surprises, this country.

We've got an away game against Hoddesdon.

We should be able to beat them. We're better.

And we beat them in my first match.

Terrible pitch. As usual. They haven't got good ones.

But... It's possible to score here.

Christian, our coach, has high professional standards.

It's not always easy to understand him. He talks a mile a minute.

Simen will attack, then second player arrives on the second line. Just do it.

A lot of movement in the last three. The last three being explosive. OK?

We've got Spanish coaches.

What's interesting with that is that we play completely different football

than other teams in our division.

We play very technical football with a lot of short passes.

We go out with passes from the rear instead of long balls from the keeper.

It's very ambitious. And it's risky football too.

Not least because the pitches only allow the exact opposite.

They like to play the Barcelona way. I don't think I'm a Barcelona player.

-And it's not a Barcelona pitch. -It's not a Barcelona pitch.

But they do very well, and I think they're very close.

I think this year, or in a couple of years,

you can slowly see them progress up the league.

The teams we face play horrible football.

No one is even trying to make three or four passes within the team.

It's all just booting, smacking, and kick and run all the time.

I'm positive I should've had a penalty in the first half.

Ref!

I got room and was about to shoot when someone pulled my shoulder...

I fall down.

Was it a penalty?

I don't think it was. I think Simen fell over.

F***ing ref.

I've been having negative thoughts about

what my fellow players, surroundings and the coaches think of me.

That I should score more goals.

-Close in on the thrower! -Too easy!

F***ing get out and help him! Well done, Charlie!

They get a very easy penalty.

I was looking right at it and didn't see anything.

Just a bit of shoving between two equal players.

Hey, let's go! Again, let's go!

And then I shoot far, far over.

A shot that was more of a danger to air traffic than to the keeper.

Aw, f***ing hell, man!

It was an ugly loss.

It was probably the worst game and experience so far.

We've got to grow the f*** up, some of us. Seriously.

We're out there, crying like f***ing babies,

getting rolled over by a sack of shit because we're not on our game.

Decisions go against us. The referee was shit. Both ways.

And we've let that turn into the biggest shower of shit I've seen.

And then of course Hoddesdon

had to pass by our locker room on the way to theirs.

So, because we sang very loudly when we beat them...

Are you honestly f***ing at it?

You're better than that!

You're f***ing better than that, you gobshite!

Boys, it was what we did at their place, and we can't take it.

We're winning and we're screaming our heads off.

We thought we were Billy- Big-Bollocks, and now we don't like it.

We all need to f***ing grow up.

They sucked, I sucked, the referee sucked.

Everything was shit.

It doesn't get much darker than this.

How are you?

Good? OK.

Jamie Carragher. It's so nice to have you here.

Thank you.

I'm a striker. Can you give me some tips on what to do..?

-Me? A defender? -Yeah, to trick defenders.

Who was your worst opponent?

The best opponent was Thierry Henry.

-So I should study him? -Yeah. Can you run? Very fast?

-Fast. -Are you physical?

-Quite. -Well, defenders don't like that.

-People who can run and... -Elbows and spinning around?

Get the defender before he gets you.

-Thank you so much. -Thank you.

-What are you doing? -Studying.

Carragher gave me homework.

I'm studying Thierry Henry.

I think he's the best Premier League striker ever.

If a striker starts to overthink a dry spell

it will continue.

The next time you put on that Biggleswade United shirt

you will be the best version of Simen Stamsø Møller you can be.

That's all you should be thinking about. Peace out!

It's the semi finals of the North Beds Charity Cup.

I never thought I'd be a part of that.

A Tuesday evening match against a team one division down.

There were a lot of spectators. About 400. That's really good.

My buddy Dave and I were in striker position.

I pass the ball to Charlie who volleys it in.

Dave secures the goal.

I think the 2-0 was because of him as well. I passed on to Charlie again.

And then... I always like to get in behind the defence.

That was a nice pass.

Simen!

Just there on the left the grass is quite good.

I'm glad I was able to show what I can do.

And after that first goal, I get a few more, of course.

Simen! Finally!

-Was that Simen? -Yeah.

So good! So good! So good!

We beat Baldock in the semi finals.

Next is the final match, which is also my last match in England.

I've never won anything at senior level before.

It would be nice if the first time was in England.

Ferrari 488 GTO would be fastest V8 car ever from Maranello - Duration: 3:29.

Ferrari 488 GTO would be fastest V8 car ever from Maranello

This is rumored to be the return of the storied GTO moniker.

It should surprise absolutely no one to learn that Ferrari may be cooking up an even hotter variant of the 488 GTB.

If a report from Autocar is true, the new car will resurrect the hallowed GTO moniker and pack more than 700 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged mid-mounted V8.

It would be the successor to the wild and wonderful Ferrari 458 Speciale, the swan song for the naturally aspirated V8 in Maranello. This will be the fourth time Ferrari has used the name GTO.

The first was in the 1960s on the 250 GTO and then again in the 1980s on the 288 GTO. Most recently, a more track-oriented variant of the 599 GTB was released as the 599 GTO.

Each of these cars eschewed most pretense of comfort and civility in the pursuit of power and performance. While they didnt carry the GTO moniker, the 430 Scuderia and the 458 Speciale were designed with a similar philosophy.

Since the standard 488 GTB already makes 661 horsepower, it doesnt seem like a stretch to up the boost and strengthen the internals to move the needle past 700.

Ferrari cant let the new 710-horsepower McLaren 720S have all of the fun. The 488 GTO should use lighter components and lose some interior trim and sound deadening to drop weight.

Autocar believes the new model will dip below 3,000 pounds, absolutely svelte for a car this size. The car should have better aero, a revised suspension, and higher performance wheels and tires.

For non-Ferrari comparison, think Porsche 911 GT3. Weve seen some spy shots of a new Ferrari recently, but at the time we thought this might be the rumored Dino.

Its unclear if thats still the case, but either way, look for something big from Ferrari sometime later this year.
