Arab Israelis: What country do you tell people you are from? Israel or Palestine? - Duration: 10:10.

When you are out of the country

and someone asks where are you from, what do you say?

Mohammad Akko

It depends where I am

Most of the times I say I am Palestinian

Where was that? You told me Greece

Greece

But sadly he didn't accept it

he didn't accept it

And if I am in the United States

I say I am Israeli

They acccepted it? Do they think you are Jewish?

No

Ok that's already not bad

but yes, they accepted it

When you are outside the country

and you meet someone Arab

like Saudi Arabia or Syria

what country do you say you are from?

Look, I always say that I am an Arab Israeli

Mohamad Faradis

An Arab Israeli is the reality and I don't lie about reality

Do you also say you are Palestinian-Israeli?

Generally I say Arab-Israeli

and there is often a stigma

for Arab Israelis

Arab Israelils are Palestinians

our origins

What is the stigma?

When we say Arab of 1948 or Arab Israeli

then everyone knows

Arabs know but no one outside knows

Explain to others what that means

What do I need to explain?

What is the stigma?

What are Arabs of 1948? - Yes

They are originally Palestinian

Why is that a stigma?

No

I am saying Arabs of 1948

Israeli Arabs

How we are called in general

Arabs of 1948

that's how we call ourselves

I heard, I don't know if this is true

that others think you are ....not traitors

that you are supporting the Jews

They can think whatever they want to think

It is not our problem what they think

We live within the reality that exists

We don't need to live in a fantasy

That is the realilty and we are very happy with the reality

and not happy with the politics

and there is nothing we can do about it

When you are outside the country

what country do you say you are from?

I say I am from Israel

Even if you go to Turkey or Jordan?

I say I am from Israel

How do they react in Jordan?

Awad Kfar Yasif

It depends where you are

the situation impacts the answer that you give them

when things are better and more normal

then you see that

their reaction is nicer

It depends on the (political) situation

the situation depends on the political situation all the time

so when there are tensions...

So during the wars, not a good idea - Yes

Do you travel outside the country?

No

You don't travel?

I used to

Now you don't? - No

When was the last time you travelled?

A few years ago

but I plan to travel in a month or so

When you travelled and people asked where you are from...

I say from Israel

Zahalka Kfar Ara

I could tell you

I am like those that say

they are from Palestine

but I don't I say I am from Israel

Why?

I am not against it

No, no

Why?

Because my passport is Israeli

no more than...

I can't say that

I live in a Palestinian state

True, I am an Arab and I belong to them (Palestinians)

But I am telling you

if someone asks me I say Israel

And what do they say to that?

When you say "Israel"....

Look

when I went to Egypt

sometimes, I didn't...

You have to be careful

To say "Israeli" is not accepted by them

so Palestine

not Israel

In Jordan they don't care - No?

They don't care, they even say you can pay in shekels

Really. In Jordan it is like that

I would tell them I have no money

so can I change shekels and they had no problem

you can pay in shekels

because soon they won't have dinars there

only shekels

The majority who visit Jordan are Arab Israelis

In Turkey, no one asked me

When you travel, where do you say you are from?

I say from Akko they don't ask where I am from

They ask from what city I say Akko

because Akko is Israel and not Palestine

Samih Akko

Have you been to Jordan? - No

Egypt? - No

Turkey?

Only passing through

Where have you been?

Italy

Spain

I go to Italy 4 times a year

To buy merchandise? - No

My son lives there

and I visit him

Where?

In Catania

Do you know it?

No where is it?

Palermo

Where the mafia is

It's my dream

Do you travel sometimes?

Yes

To where?

I travelled to Turkey

to Jordan

to Egypt

to Italy

to Burgas (Bulgaria)

Ahmad Kfar Qara

When you travel and someone asks where you come from, do you say Israel

or Palestine?

Funny question

Truthfully

I say I am an Arab Palestinian that lives in the state of Israel

What is the reaction to saying the word "Israel"?

Let's say in Egypt

Italy they are not going to care

In Egypt I can't even say the word

It's very difficult

So what do you do?

So I tell them I am Palestinian

Or I say I am an "Arab from 1948"

That's okay to say?

It's not that okay but

That's the only thing you can...

other than saying you are Palestinian

that's the only other thing you can say that there is a chance they will accept

If you say "Israel" then boom

What would they do to you?

I doubt they would kill me

but they would not treat me well

They will make me pay more

because they think that Arabs that live here (in Israel)

receive more money than anyone else

and that's it

When you travel outside Israel

You travel sometimes, right? - Yes

Akbar Umm el Fahm

When other Arabs ask you where you live

what do you answer?

I tell them the state of Israel

Really? - Really

What is their reaction?

Everyone has his own reaction

There are those who react well and those that don't react well

Give me a story of someone

There are some who say "Why do you say Israel"

"and not Palestine"

and there are people who say

"You live..."

I personally feel I belong to the state of Israel

because I live in Israel and a citizen of Israel

Adham Akko

Israel

Yes

It's normal

They don't say "Allah, damnit! this is Palestine"

Some people yes

Most people no

They are confused they have no problems

Are you Muslim or Christian?

No, Muslim

Adam and Fadi Jish

Israel

Israel

Omar Jish

When you go.. - I understood

Israeli

You don't say Palestine?

Tell the truth

The truth?

If it is someone Arab

from another country

then yes, I say I am from Palestine

But if it

defines me

as an Israeli because that is my passport

Say for Turkey

of course we have to say we are Palestinians

because Turkey loves Palestinians

So you feel safer, also? - Yes

But other places, say the United States

of course, Israeli

Because I have an Israeli identity

Yes

I have more opportunities than them

The dreaded tampo - How to deal with it effectively - Duration: 10:14.

The dreaded tempo - how to deal with it effectively

Tampo.

Magtampo in full.

If you are in an Australian Filipina relationship, you soon learn the meaning of tampo.

This is the great sulk.

Being in a huff.

It's a source of confusion and misery to many an unprepared Australian man.

What is a tampo?

I detest the Filipina tampo.

I really do.

Fortunately after many years of being a great husband and teaching-by-example my Filipina

wife the benefit of free and open communication it rarely rears its ugly head these days,

although I did just have to deal with a bad outburst from one of our extended family over

the last few days so it's not ancient history to me.

I also live in the Philippines fulltime, so it's never that far away.

So what exactly is a tampo, to the uninitiated?

It's a way of NOT dealing with a problem, and of ensuring whatever the problem is?

That it will never go away!

It's the human-interaction version of sweeping dirt under the carpet.

The dirt remains, and the lump in the carpet gets larger and people trip over it.

It's not the Filipino way to deal with problems and issues directly.

It's not usual for someone to react to something they don't like, and less likely they will

speak up and say "Hey, I don't like that!

Please stop doing it!

It makes me feel bad, so please stop!"

This is in fact the negative side to those perpetual Filipina smiles.

Yes, definitely, Filipinos are generally happy and easy-going and pretty tolerant of imperfections

and faults in others.

However they are also human beings, and no one is that happy all the time.

Please read my previous article on "onion skin" (being thin-skinned), which is a Filipino

characteristic.

And fellahs?

Be aware of that certain special time of the month where skins are extra-thin and tempers

may be on-edge because of hormones.

Often a time to be especially careful not to push boundaries and to watch your tongue.

So what happens is the pressure of un-fixed problems builds up, and it leads to an explosion.

However it's not a practical explosion.

If it was an explosion of "Hey!

You keep making fun of me in front of the neighbours, and it hurts my feelings.

I want you to stop!" then it might even help!

It might make that person see what they're doing, and maybe things will get better.

But that's not how a tampo works.

It's never so practical and helpful.

Tampo is characterized by appallingly bad communication.

The Filipina having the tampo does some or all of these things:

• Won't talk • Definitely won't tell you what the problem

is, as you should already know.

May utter a few unhelpful phrases.

• Resists all attempts to fix the problem • Will appear perfectly normal to others

if answering the phone or greeting someone at the door, but will soon return to tampo

when dealing with you • May run off somewhere, possibly for several

days • Bang cupboard doors and slam things around

• May do a great deal of cleaning, or may retreat to bedroom, sometimes for days

This will remain until she gets over it.

May apologise, or may not.

Definitely will not discuss it, and attempts to say "Let's talk about it" may trigger

a recurrence.

How to deal with a tampo

How do you deal with a tampo when it happens?

To be honest?

Not a whole lot you can do when she's in mid-tampo.

At this point all logic is switched off, and if you push too hard you will probably make

it worse.

She may storm off in the middle of the night and put herself in danger.

Dragging suitcases down the road and attempting to walk to the airport to fly back to the

Philippines at 2:00am in the middle of winter?

These things have happened!

You may also end up both saying things that become hard to take back later.

Think carefully before you attempt a proactive intervention at this point!

Most of the time, you will need to weather the storm and try not to make it worse!

Not saying to ignore it.

Just saying to delay until a more effective time.

  Should you do malambing?

Malambing…..or lambing…..basically means "sucking up".

Being extraordinarily sweet and attentive.

This is the usual advice given, and many a Filipina expects this.

My belief?

NEVER do this!

NEVER "suck up", and NEVER apologise for something you don't even understand.

This is just reinforcing and in fact rewarding some very negative and destructive behavior.

Tampo is not the behavior of an adult who is committed to her marriage.

It's spoilt-child behavior, and shouldn't be tolerated let alone rewarded.

And unless you did something where you really should have known better about, ie. unless

you cheated on her or acted like a complete pig, then you deserved for this to have been

handled in a mature way…..not this way!

So yes, thinking about it, if she's having tampo because you did something bad, then

sure.

Do all the malambing you can.

And more importantly, apologise sincerely and try not to do it again.

But not because you failed your mind-reading class at school!

But otherwise, what should you actually do?

You should talk about this when she's calmed down and a few days have passed.

• You should let her know that you are sorry she felt that way, but confirm that you had

no idea that anything that you or anybody did was causing her hurt.

And that had she simply explained it to you when it happened the first or the second time,

you would have stopped it or done what was in your power to stop it.

• And help her to understand that while that may have been her way before, that this

is no way for a committed married couple to behave.

Either the tampos stop, or the marriage is basically doomed.

They are cruel, hurtful and very destructive.

• You should encourage her to tell you what she thinks and feels about things on a daily

basis.

If she say "No, really I'm fine" then you should push a bit harder.

Let her know that you want to know because you care about her.

Let her see that telling you is actually easy, and that it leads to positive outcomes, ie.

that nice feeling that comes from realizing someone actually gets you, plus seeing some

problems and concerns actually get fixed.

• Make sure you do the same thing.

Tell her your feelings too.

The good AND the bad.

Make the time to talk at the end of the day,

and develop some positive habits.

And hopefully problems will get nipped in the bud rather than building up and being

a source of misery.

And work hard to make this a thing of the past, or you may well see the love slip away.

Staring Eternity in the Face - Duration: 4:16.

Oh, my gosh, how am I already 23?!

It's my birthday today, and somehow that completely caught me off guard — because

it's not like I haven't been expecting this… for the last 23 years.

I just don't think I ever imagined what it would like to be 23.

Up until now, all the years of my life have been defined by something, whether it was

a school year or graduating college, so now this just feels like… an alarmingly unstructured

page in my story.

So what do you do when the rest your life is suddenly staring you in the face?

You run away and look backwards!

Like a lot of people, I really like anniversaries and the chance to look back and reflect on

seasons of my life.

The last year has been full of surprises.

For one, exactly a year ago on my 22nd birthday, I graduated from university, and then, a few

months later, I left all of my friends and family behind and moved to Wichita, Kansas

— which I straight up would not have believed if you'd told me last April.

Since moving, I've learned a lot more about being intentional in my friendships, and also

worrying less about the things that are out of my control.

And I'm also finally starting to realize that some of the things I've been afraid of

— like, not meeting people's expectations or just failing spectacularly — are really,

really stupid.

They're dumb.

I've been stupid for the last 23 years.

It's cool.

I hesitate to lump this upcoming year into one big, poetic-sounding blanket statement

because I don't already want to be putting it into a box.

Which is already kind of a big change, for me because I really like putting things into

boxes, usually with neat, one-phrase labels.

But, that aside, there's no one to tell me which milestones this year has to hold,

which feels both startling and freeing.

More than anything, I hope this year is full of a word my church friends have been throwing

around a lot: margin.

In other words, that besides the necessary template of work, I'll leave myself enough

breathing space to go wandering down other paths and for new paths to come bounding across

my own.

Still, I think it's important to recognize that, if you /are/ looking for a change, you

don't need the permission of a birthday or a flipped calendar to start pursuing that.

You can start taking the steps now toward the place you want to be in five, ten, fifty

years, or the place you want to see society be in fifty years.

And I know for me at least, it's easy to get stuck in a rut — the kind of, "Wake up,

go to work, come home, feed the hamster, sleep, and repeat" kind of rut.

It's easy to stop noticing the ordinary and beautiful things, and it's also easy to

stop noticing the things that are bad and uncomfortable and need to change because it's

often a lot easier to just put on our blinders and push forward.

Because for me, if the path I'm walking down is so safe, so familiar, so comfortable - even

if that's at the expense of other people or the planet - why would we want to do anything

else?

And similarly, dreams change, and people change, and the person you see in the mirror today

won't be the same one scrutinizing you a year from now — just like the person sitting

in front of this camera at 24 won't be the same one talking to you today.

Over the course of my life, my passions have largely stayed the same, but the way I've

/approached/ those passions has been radically different.

First, I wanted to be an author, then a doctor, then a researcher, and now a science journalist.

And each change, while increasingly more suited to who I am and who I'm becoming, seemed entirely

unfathomable before I woke up one day, looked around, and realized I was walking down the

same old comfortable, the worn, familiar, wrong path.

So, 23…

I have a few things — some small, and some extremely large — coming up in the next

year, and I'm excited to share them with you!

But for now, I'm just want to focus on being present exactly where I am right now and not

putting this year into a box.

Also this year, I want to be more away of and affected by injustice, and not desensitized

to all the troubles of the world around me.

It's really easy to pick up my phone and open Twitter and scroll through it like, "That's

not a feel-good story, that's not a cool science fact, that's not a cute dog... oh, uh, wars

and struggling children?

That's not appealing."

That's me and a glimpse of what's been going on in my mind lately, but as always, I really

appreciate you watching and listening, and I will talk to you soon.

Question for the comments!

Do you feel like it's really easy for you to be present?

Or, like me, are you always thinking twelve to fourteen steps ahead about everything all

the time?

Thanks again for watching, and I will see you and your answer in the comments below.

Where is Eastern Europe today? | How to travel better - Duration: 7:06.

Hi there! I am Conor, the Language Tsar, and in this video I wanna

discuss what we mean by Eastern

Europe today because I'm often in

Eastern Europe but I think there's a lot of

confusion for ... for many viewers

about what exactly should be Eastern Europe.

So if you're thinking that countries

like the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary,

Poland lie in Eastern Europe then I got

some news for you because you're a kind of

living in circa 1999 both politically

and well geographically they're just

not in Eastern Europe. Those countries are

in Central Europe and today those

countries are politically tied definitely

with the West. There's even an argue that

makes that that's really just Western

Europe in general. See where Prague is, I

mean it's further west than Vienna

geographically, so there's just no way. That is

Central Europe, pure and pure Central Europe.

'Mitteleuropa' as they would say in

German. Another region is South-East

Europe so we talked about the Balkans,

Bulgaria, Romania. Now I think their history

and the geography there is a bit

different. So the countries in South

Eastern Europe have a history apart from

those further to the east of them, like

say Russia or Ukraine. And they don't

have much contact there, with the

exception perhaps of Serbia, Montenegro and

Bulgaria where I was able to speak a

little bit in Russian. They do though

have contact with countries further to

the north of them in Central Europe and

also in Western Europe and in fact those

countries in Southeast Europe have

either already joined the EU and NATO or

they're pushing for further integration

for the last few years. In the former

Soviet Union we have the Baltic countries

right?

Now today I see the Baltic countries

being more in Northern Europe than in

Eastern Europe that's just because

politically they're part of NATO, the

part of the European Union and also

culturally they look more to the north

and to the west. I mean they do have a

sizable russian-speaking minorities

especially in Latvia, also in the capital

of Estonia, Tallinn, the other parts of Estonia

there are sizeable ... a little lot less, so in

Lithuania than in Latvia and Estonia. So

in spite of their recent history in the

Soviet Union these countries to me feel

more like Northern Europe or the Baltics

than they do Eastern European. The South

Caucasus that's Azerbaijan, Armenia and

Georgia but those three

countries are really kind of in between

Europe and Asia. They are kind of in both to be

frank. That's kind of Eurasian.

So I wouldn't really say it's Eastern Europe

per se. So where does all this confusion

come from in fact about Central and

Eastern Europe and what constitutes both?

Well, it really comes from recent history

and at the Cold War because Europe was

divided in two, right down the middle

more or less, and that's why we have west

and east. So there is that line from

basically East Germany

all the way down, when around Austria,

kept Austria in the western side but

then kept the Czech Republic on the eastern

side and that's why still today some

people associate the Czech Republic,

Hungary, Slovakia, Poland as being in East

Europe as opposed to Central Europe. So

that's why there's still a lot of

confusion about where Central Europe

really lies. Czech Republic, Hungary,

Slovakia and Poland are definitely in

Central Europe but for a lot of people

because of this division during the Cold

War, they see them as being in Eastern

Europe. Now that those countries are not

just in European Union but also in other

organizations like NATO, they're clearly

not in that economic and political bloc

that they were during the Cold War which

was obviously the Soviet Union which was

centered around Russia, the Soviet Union itself

was constituted of such social republics

like Belarus, the three Baltic countries -

Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia - here Ukraine,

Moldova. And also the Warsaw Pact which

was the countries that were aligned or

allied to the Soviet Union which lay

further to the west. So all that was

called Eastern Europe but today that's

definitely central and we need a new

definition of what constitutes Eastern

Europe.

So today Eastern Europe lies further to the

east than it did in the 20th century. Former

Soviet Union in Europe so that's gonna

be Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, here I'm in

the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, and Belarus.

So basically this debate about what

constitutes Western, Central or Eastern

Europe comes down more to politics than

to geography because geographically

speaking of course Europe is quite ... is a

lot bigger and extends all the way to

the Ural Mountains, so then basically

everything would be Western Europe right

up until Russia. So what we're talking about is

political. So what makes these countries -

Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and Moldova - not

in Western Europe or not in Central

Europe? And that's because they're, number

one, not in NATO and number two, not in the EU.

They share a lot of common history

and culture. They were in the Soviet

Union together. Russian is widely spoken

in the region. I know that's a bit

controversial here in Ukraine especially,

in Western Ukraine where it's not but we'll say

at least up until here in Kyiv,

it's definitely widely spoken.

It's obviously the official language of

Russia and it's widely spoken in Moldova,

here in Ukraine and also in Belarus it's

also an official language. And actually

here in Ukraine it's an official

language in certain regions which

happen to be more east of Ukraine or in

the south. So are they of one kind of polity?

No, definitely not.

Ukraine has decided that it is currently

on a path more westward since the Euro

Maidan protests and the changing

government from ... from more pro-Russian

Viktor Yanukovych

to the current president who is more

pro-European and that's Petro Poroshenko.

So definitely it's starting to change. As as

I'm making this video in April 2017

Moldova and Belarus have forged paths

that are kind of between both Russia and

the European Union.

Moldova even has an association

agreement with the EU, while Belarus has

an economic union with Russia. So maybe

one day we'll actually talk about here

in Kyiv not being in Eastern Europe,

actually being, saying, Central or even

Western Europe, so that is possible. So

perhaps in the near future the

dividing line between Eastern and Western

Europe will in fact be over here or

maybe it will go back to like it was in

1999 and be back here.

So that, I think Eastern Europe is

due to political and of course never

changing geographical

context. Tell me what you think. Do you

like my definition of Eastern Europe or you think

it should be broader, you think it should

even narrower? Write that all stuff in

the comments section below the video.

Give this video a big thumbs up if you

like this. See you in the next one!
