The President and the Prime Minister flew to the Franz Josef Land archipelago,
to the northernmost territory of Russia.
Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev intend to assess
the full-scale cleaning operation results in the Arctic.
The head of state ordered to start it in 2010,
when he first visited the archipelago,
and saw the many ton toxic waste dumps left there during the Soviet era.
The first shots of the President's stay in one of the most remote parts of the world,
where even now it's -27 degrees Celsius and windy,
will be shown in my colleague's report, Pavel Zarubin.
Only here, boundless Russia ends.
Franz Josef Land is the northernmost point of our country.
Further, there is only the North Pole.
You can get here only by military transport aircraft,
and you should be very lucky with the weather.
It is very unstable here.
Until the last moment, it was unknown whether the President would arrive here.
Yesterday, the weather didn't allow for flights.
With a couple thousand kilometers behind it,
the plane landed directly on the snowy runway.
Prime Minister Medvedev, Defense Minister Shoigu,
and the President's special environmental envoy, Ivanov,
flew to Franz Josef Land together with President Putin.
Putin is here for the second time in recent years.
He visited Franz Josef Land in 2010,
and then, upon seeing a dump of rusty metal,
ordered a full-scale cleaning operation of the Arctic.
To date, 35,000 tons have been removed from here.
We have cleaned almost the whole island.
To understand the amount of work done, you need to see these archive videos.
In three years, it was possible to remove everything
that was accumulated in the Arctic over several decades of human activity,
and restore its pristine beauty.
Everything here used to be literally filled with barrels and abandoned rusty trunks.
79,000 tons of waste was removed.
Now, you can see the beauty of the Arctic,
its icebergs and the most extreme border pillar of Russia.
The clean and beautiful Arctic opens up new secrets to scientists.
Look at these amazing shots!
It's a truly amazing place.
The cave of polar pilots.
Its all made of ice, and the ice is thousands upon thousands years old.
According to scientists, by studying the composition of this ice,
they can determine the past of the planet, and even try to predict its future.
Each centimeter of ice keeps secrets about the planet's history,
what kind of climate there was, what microorganisms lived in the Arctic,
and how severe was the ice age.
When we receive the answers to all these questions,
we can try to understand what will happen to Earth's such unstable climate.
This is the only way to know, for example,
how much carbon dioxide there was in the atmosphere.
People can go out for a walk only together with armed guards.
Franz Josef Land is considered to be the birthplace of polar bears.
There are a lot of them here, and they are good at hiding in the snow-white space.
But the guns are loaded with flare shells,
which will scare the bears, but won't harm them.
What do you load them with?
With flare shells.
They look like the ones for a flare gun.
A bear can come out at any time.
There are many here.
Signs "Beware, bears!" are also put on the doors of the Russian Arctic National Park.
Ecologists working here, are exploring the archipelago.
This is not a hot air balloon.
This is a special meteorological probe.
When launched, it rises tens of kilometers up in the sky,
and constantly transmits information about the state of the atmosphere to the Earth.
Many ecologists live here for several months,
but four people have lived here for a whole year.
It's a boiler that heats the building.
And it works on the fuel that was here before, on the island of Alexandra Land.
Why did you decide to bring the dog?
The dog plays the role of an assistant.
If we go somewhere and do some work,
it can warn us if a bear is coming.
This is the main means of transportation.
Day and night, even to bring water, everyone moves on the all-terrain vehicles.
It's a hard life, but no one here regrets making this choice.
The Arctic is tempting, it really is.
Maybe it's this cold that attracts us.
We want very extreme conditions.
Not long ago, a very curious bear came here.
It walked around the yard.
I had to use pyrotechnics.
Tourists also come here.
People are ready to pay 700,000 rubles to visit these places.
Environmentalists say that every year
there are more of those who would like to see the beauty of the Arctic.
From here, the President will fly to Arkhangelsk, to the International Arctic Forum.
