In an interview with the Financial Times coming less than a week ahead of his meeting with

China's president Xi Jinping in Mar A Lago (Xi, however, will not be staying at Trump's

"Winter palace" as the SCMP reports) Donald Trump has warned the US "will take unilateral

action to eliminate the nuclear threat from North Korea unless China increases pressure

on the regime in Pyongyang."

Among the key topics for discussion with Xi Jinping, the US president said he would focus

on the growing threat from Kim Jong Un�s nuclear program when he hosts the Chinese

president at his Florida resort this week in their first meeting.

�China has great influence over North Korea.

And China will either decide to help us with North Korea, or they won�t,� Mr Trump

said in the Oval Office.

�If they do, that will be very good for China, and if they don�t, it won�t be

good for anyone.�

But he made clear that he would deal with North Korea with or without China�s help.

Asked if he would consider a �grand bargain� � where China pressures Pyongyang in exchange

for a guarantee that the US would later remove troops from the Korean peninsula � Mr Trump

said: �Well if China is not going to solve North

Korea, we will.

That is all I am telling you.�

As a reminder, shortly after the latest North Korean ballistic missile test, China banned

all coal imports from North Korea, effectively imposing a major economic blockade (coal accounts

for up to 40% of North Korean exports, virtually all of its to China); that appears to be insufficient

for Trump.

As the FT notes, the White House views North Korea as the most imminent threat to the US

after Barack Obama warned his successor about the progress Pyongyang had made developing

long-range missiles and nuclear weapons.

In a separate interview, KT McFarland, the deputy White House national security adviser,

told the FT that �there is a real possibility that North Korea will be able to hit the US

with a nuclear-armed missile by the end of the first Trump term.�

The National Security Council has completed a review of options on North Korea that Mr

Trump ordered after his inauguration, according to two people familiar with the review.

One of those people said the review had been accelerated to have the options ready for

the Trump-Xi summit.

Trump told the FT it was �totally� possible for the US to tackle North Korea without China.

Asked if that meant dealing with Pyongyang one on one, he said: �I don�t have to

say any more.

Totally.�

�What President Trump is trying to do here is to press the Chinese hard by warning them

what comes next if they don�t help or join with the US to deal with this problem,�

said Dennis Wilder, a former CIA China analyst who later served as the top White House Asia

aide to George W Bush.

Barring a pre-emptive strike on North Korea � which the administration will not rule

out since all options are on the table � many experts believe the US needs Chinese help

as Beijing has the most sway over Pyongyang.

But Washington could consider alternatives, ranging from more effective sanctions to various

kinds of more controversial covert action.

Ahead of the US-China summit, Trump raised hopes that he would reach some kind of deal

with Xi, despite heavy criticism about China�s trade surplus and exchange rate policy.

�I have great respect for him.

I have great respect for China.

I would not be at all surprised if we did something that would be very dramatic and

good for both countries and I hope so.�

As a reminder, the topic of North Korea was among the key issues discussed by US Secretary

of State, Rex Tillerson, the, during his first visit to Asia, when he warned that the previous

US �policy of strategic patience has ended."

And in a separate topic, one just as important for US-China relations, namely trade, Trump

told the FT that he will not push the Chinese president and discuss tariffs with Xi at the

coming meeting, "maybe the next time we meet."

With this first video we begin a series dedicated to Como lake, one of the most beautiful places in the world for many tourism and nature magazines.

In today's video we're going to discover the origin of Como lake.

Often you may hear that Como lake and other pre-alpine lakes had their origin from glaciers…

this is partly true because Como lake has a much older origin.

Let's go and investigate how actually originated our lake!

The Lake of Como#1 Geological history

The larian area emerged from the sea 10 million of years ago when the african plaque collided with the euro-asiatic plaque.

Up to 2 million of years ago the morphology of these mountain areas was determined from erosion of the water streams.

Moreover the lake wasn't still formed and the Padan plain was submerged by the sea.

The bottom of our lake if observed in transversal section has a "U" profile.

In the past it was believed that the valley that hosts Como lake was delved by a glacier.

Indeed it was a glacier that with its enormous mass and erosive capacity transforms the environment generating valleys with "U" profile.

We know that during quaternary glaciation, which happened between 1.200.000 years ago and 11.000 years ago,

Alps and pre-Alps were crossed by enormous glaciers which often reached heights of many kilometers and reached to the Padan plain.

Through geosismic measurements we have seen that under the bed of which we talked before there are debris and sediments of alluvial origin for depths of tens or maybe hundreds of meters…

Even deeper below these debris we find basal rocks but the profile of the rocky bed reserved a surprise: it's V shaped.

We are surprised because valleys that have these shape are always of fluvial origin:

they have been dug by a river and not by a glacier as we said before...

So, we repeat to make it clear:

a "U" valley is glacier made,

a "V" valley is river made.

Roses and tulips

and the sun shines above Como

airplanes like birds

and the fans cheering

and there are barriers and walls

that don't divide anything

an ugly selfie

won't steal your present

and the lords' houses

that tell its story

from the blooming gardens

that reveal its glory.

On the bed of our lakes we find both the profile we just saw:

the V and U profile.

What does this mean?

Only afterwards with the glaciers passage these valleys have been re-shaped to the actual U profile lake-bed.

It's been done by the cited quaternary glaciers which have treaded these pre-existing valleys already shaped by rivers.

But the story doesn't end there.

If we look at the outlie of the V-shaped valley we can notice that the bottom of said valley is about 400 m under today's sea level.

Geez!

You would indeed agree that a river cannot dig under the sea level!

This means that in the moment of the erosion and development of the V-shaped valley, the sea level laid several hundred meters deeper than now.

This kind of events are quite uncommon in the history of Earth.

Nonetheless one of those happened right 7 million years ago during the Messinian, the last age of the Miocene.

7 million years ago the Mediterranean Sea was connected to the Atlantic Ocean through two straits, while now there's only the Strait of Gibraltar.

Between 6 and 7 million of years ago because of tectonic reasons, meaning the plaques movements,

the straits have been closed and the link between Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean went missing.

The Mediterranean Sea during the Messinian Age behaved like a puddle of water under the sun, tending to dry out.

This happened because it couldn't receive anymore the water supply from the Atlantic Ocean.

If you think about it the Suez Channel, being artificial, wasn't there at that time.

This phenomenon is called the Messinian Salinity Crisis.

Thank to this decrease in the sea level, the Lombard valleys increased gradually their bottom eroded by the turbulent waters of ancient rivers.

At the point that the Padan plain itself turned into a great drainage basin that collects numerous rivers and torrents.

In the Zanclean Age, about 5 million years ago the strait of Gibraltar opened and the Mediterranean Sea started again to be filled of Atlantic water.

According to this theory the water would have quickly flown along the strait with a few kilometers jump

and thus with a range far higher than that of the Iguazù Falls or of the Niagara Falls.

So, the Mediterranean Sea started to be filled with water again and the sea waters submerged again the valleys dug in the Messinian.

Huge masses of detritus were deposited on the bottom of these submerged valleys.

In the Quaternary, about 2 million years ago, the appearance of the lands and the seas was like the current one:

the shaping agents of the territory, from this moment on, will be the glaciations induced by the global cooling that troubles this age.

Such important events greatly influenced the morphological appearance of the territory

and at the end of the last glaciation, that reached his apex about 20.000 years ago,

the erosive action exerted by the glacial masses knew his peak and was the last agent in the shaping of the valleys that host today our lakes.

However the Lake of Como has been mocked,

even in a poetic way.

Especially the ones that do not live near the lake

tell this little rhyme.

The Lake of Como

is like a man:

a foot in Lecco

a foot in Como

the head in Domaso

"something else" in Bellagio.
