causes you or you and other vehicles to experience collisions that are

potentially fatal.

[Kelsey:] I was more thinking like, "Oh, I have a flat tire.

I'm just gonna change it."

I wasn't thinking like, "I have caused the death of

others and I now must live with that for the rest of my life."

[Michael:] I tire blowing out is different than—

[Michael and Kelsey:] a tire going flat.

[Kelsey:] You either have to live with your child or live with

the death of others.

[Michael:] Anyway, we're about to go fly a drone to attempt to get the

shot that I was attempting to get when my fingers got all… chopped up.

We are back at MaClay Flat which is the same place that uh—

I chopped my fingers up before.

I'm interested to see if

there's any evidence still.

This is where it happened.

It was really cold so the drone was coming down right here.

Above this area.

And I— tried to grab the drone before it hit the ground, but

it had lowered its landing gear which brought the propellers

down alongside the bottom of the craft.

And that uh— chopped my fingers.

I was wondering if I'd see any blood in the snow over here, but

the snow's all gone.

So I just got the drone setup and then realized that the camera

didn't get put back in the case.

Sooo…

We have no way to get the shot.

I don't know if I got get the camera now and then come back.

I don't know— [Kelsey:] We have 'till, like, seven.

[Michael:] I don't know what other option we have.

This is like, the fifth or sixth time that we've come out here to try

to get this one shot.

[Kelsey:] Well, I say we go back and we'll see how light it is.

[Michael:] Every time we do a drone flight we have to contact

the airport because this is within five miles of an airport and

ask them, "Is it okay if we fly a drone right now?"

And then they ask a bunch of questions like, "How long are

you gonna be flying?

How high are you gonna be flying?

What are you gonna be flying?"

They just want to make sure that

you're not gonna interfere with the other air traffic.

But we've tried to get this shot so many times, I wonder if they're

like, "God. What— what are they DOING over there at Maclay Flat

that requires so much drone flight?"

(In a patronizing voice) "Nothing. just tryin' to get a ten second shot."

Round two. We have the camera this time

so hopefully this is the time we actually get the shot we want.

[Kelsey:] Yeaaah.

[Dance music]

[Michael:] I think maybe we got it.

I wasn't able to fly as I would have liked, but it was certainly

better than the one that we got when I sliced my fingers.

Batteries for this particular drone are very susceptible

to getting cold and when the drone got up there again

I got a "Cold Battery" warning.

[Kelsey:] This might be a dumb suggestion, but could you just

put hand warmers on it?

[Michael:] People do that, yeah.

My hope was that because it's warm enough for the snow to

have melted that it was gonna be warm enough for this, but

it still wasn't havin' it.

Uuuuugh.

Okay.

I'm gonna say hopefully— oh, god.

What the heck?

[Kelsey:] Is it unzipped?

[Michael:] It is zipped.

But it unzipped.

The zipper, like, split open after it had been zipped because this

is the unzip motion.

[Zipper zipping]

[Michael:] What the heck?

So I've learned that this case

only zips up if you zip it all the way to one side.

Not all the way to the other side.

That makes sense.

I thought this was the Clark Fork River, but I looked it up.

[Kelsey:] Hm?

Bitterroot?

[Michael:] It's the Bitterroot River.

[Kelsey:] Yeah.

[Kelsey:] Uh, how mad would you be if I pushed you in?

[Michael:] I don't know that I would be mad—

wanna have to get this shot again.

[Michael:] But then it won't be a real meal anymore.

Hopefully it doesn't fall apart.

[Kelsey:] If anything, I think you might just have to eat it with

a fork and a knife, but I think it's gonna taste pretty pizza-y.

[Michael:] Katelyn and I just spent hours working on the Kate

Tectonics episode four script which was much longer than I expected

to be working on it tonight, but it involved drawing up a lot of notes

about various props that we need to make for the episode and I think

we made the episode make more sense than it did before.

There's some confusing terms in geology regarding the different

layers in the Earth.

[Katelyn:] It's even more confusing than what we have it in the script

too as well.

Like, you can breakdown the layers that we have picked out

to do all of these layers can even be broken down more.

[Michael:] Right, cat?

[Index meows]

Look at all those shoes.

The logical part of my brain is saying that I probably should

just go to sleep right now, but for the sake of consistency

I want to at least get in a small jog.

[Metal creeks]

These metal overhangs are creeking I assume because it's getting cold out here.

I'm just gonna run for like, twenty minutes or so and then I'll go to bed.

Well…

I didn't want to take too much time running today, like I said, I

was only gonna go twenty minutes, so I decided to just set it at 7.5

miles per hour and see how long that took to run a 5K which is

3.11 miles.

And I ended up getting my fastest time that Runkeeper

has recorded for finishing a 5K which was 24 minutes and 58 seconds.

I did have to push a little bit toward the end, but it wasn't like, super

super tough, so I imagine I could do that faster.

Maybe it would have been

easier still if I wasn't running at two in the morning.

I guess we'll just have to save trying faster for another time.

For now, I'm just gonna go back home.

Probably take a shower because

I don't want to sleep all sweaty like this.

And then I'm gonna go to sleep.

Relics of an Ancient Mini-Planet Found Orbiting Mars

The planet Mars shares its orbit with a handful of small asteroids, the so-called Trojans.

Now an international team of astronomers using the Very Large Telescope in Chile have found

that most of these objects share a common composition; they are likely the remains of

a mini-planet that was destroyed by a collision long ago.

Trojan asteroids move in orbits with the same average distance from the Sun as a planet,

trapped within gravitational "safe havens" 60 degrees in front of and behind the planet.

The special significance of these locations was worked out by 18th century French Mathematician

Joseph-Louis Lagrange.

In his honour, they are now known as "Lagrange points"; the point leading the planet is L4;

that trailing the planet is L5.

About 6000 such Trojans have been found at the orbit of Jupiter and about 10 at Neptune's.

They are believed to date from the solar system's earliest times when the distribution of planets,

asteroids and comets was very different than the one we observe today.

Mars is so far the only terrestrial planet known to have Trojan companions in stable

orbits.

The first Mars Trojan was discovered over 25 years ago at L5 and named "Eureka" in reference

to the famous exclamation by Ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes.

The present tally is nine, a factor of 600 fewer than Jupiter Trojans, but even this

relatively puny sample shows interesting structure not seen elsewhere in the solar system.

obtained with the X-SHOOTER spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile.

A spectrum of 5261 Eureka is shown in blue.

The three spectra are very similar, indicating a common composition that is also rare among

asteroids.

For starters, all the Trojans, save one, are trailing Mars at its L5 Lagrange point . What's

more, the orbits of all but one of the 8 L5 Trojans group up around Eureka itself . The

cause for the uneven distribution of these objects has not yet been pinned down, though

there are a couple of possibilities.

In one scenario, a collision broke up a precursor asteroid at the L5 point, the fragments making

up the group we observe today.

Another possibility is that a process called rotational fission caused Eureka to spin up,

eventually spawning off small pieces of itself in heliocentric orbit.

Whatever the cause, the grouping strongly suggests that the asteroids in this "Eureka

family" were once part of a single object or a progenitor body.

Although the circumstantial evidence for this hypothesis is strong, the acid test is to

find out whether the asteroids share a common composition or not.

Fortunately, this can be done at the telescope by measuring the colour of sunlight reflected

off the asteroid's surface, in other words obtaining its spectrum.

For this purpose, an international team of astronomers led by Apostolos Christou and

Galin Borisov at the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium in Northern Ireland, UK, used

the X-SHOOTER spectrograph mounted on "Kueyen", the Unit 2 telescope of the European Southern

Observatory's Very Large Telescope facility in Chile in early 2016 to record the spectra

of two asteroids that belong to the Eureka family, 311999 and 385250.

Analysing the spectra, they found that both objects are "dead ringers" for Eureka (Figure

2), so confirming the genetic relationship between family asteroids.

The finding also marks a significant "first" for asteroid studies; the spectra show that

these asteroids are predominantly composed of olivine, a mineral that typically forms

within much larger objects under conditions of high pressure and temperature.

The implication is that these asteroids are likely relict mantle material from within

mini-planets or "planetesimals" which, like the Earth, developed a crust, mantle and core

through the process of differentiation but have long since been destroyed by collisions.

Christou points out that "Many other families exist in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and

Jupiter, and even among Jupiter's Trojans, but none are made up of such olivine-dominated

asteroids".

This is related to the so-called missing-mantle problem: that is, if one adds up the mass

of different minerals in the asteroid belt and particularly those thought to be pieces

of broken up, differentiated asteroids, there is a deficit of mantle material compared to

rocky crust and metallic core material.

Although the discovery of this olivine-dominated family does not provide a final solution to

the missing mantle problem, it does show that mantle material was present near Mars early

in the solar system's history.

As Christou explains: "Our findings suggest that such material has participated in the

formation of Mars and perhaps its planetary neighbour, our own Earth."

Destination 2017: Kulmbach - Duration: 6:21.

Perhaps the thing Kulmbach is most famous for is the beer festival in August.

But I visited in the much quieter month of April,

all the better to see what else the town has to offer.

And this is the speciality of Kulmbach:

two sausages served in an aniseed bun.

Very nice.

Back in the 15th century, Kulmbach was ruled by a branch of the Hohenzollern family

who were also the margraves of Brandenburg.

For this reason, it was known as the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Kulmbach,

despite not actually being a march.

A march is a territory on a border.

A feud between the Hohenzollerns and the Guttenbergs led to the creation in 1498

of a system of watchtowers,

one of which is the Rehturm on a hill overlooking Kulmbach.

Originally there were 13 of them, although in later centuries more were added.

Many still exist, although now rebuilt or reconfigured as viewing platforms.

In the event of an attack, a signal could be sent in the form of beacons

to the administrative seat of the principality, the Plassenburg fortress.

The fortress there now is not the fortress originally protected by the watchtowers:

that was destroyed in 1554, after the Second Margrave War.

It was rebuilt in the modern Renaissance style,

and is one of Germany's largest buildings of that era.

It now houses, among other things, the world's biggest collection of tin soldiers.

According to one myth, a 14th-century lady of the castle, the widowed Kunigunda of Orlamünde,

due to an unfortunate misunderstanding thought her children stood in the way of her remarriage,

and so killed them.

After her death, she appeared to members of the Hohenzollern family

to warn them of misfortune: one of the first ghost stories of its type.

Some of mediaeval Kulmbach still exists, including parts of the town's defences.

There are fragments of wall, and some towers and gates.

The original St Peter's church was destroyed in 1430:

rebuilt as a fortified church with cannons on top of the tower,

it was destroyed again about 100 years later and rebuilt once more.

The old bathhouse goes back to the 14th century.

Once a common feature in any mediaeval town —

there were two others in Kulmbach alone —

it is now one of only eight in Germany that have been restored and studied.

It's now open as a museum and art gallery.

Although Kulmbach dates back to the 11th century,

it was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1553,

razed to the ground by enemy troops.

And so most of the historic centre is not mediaeval, but Renaissance and Baroque.

The Langheim Official Court served as offices

for the administration of land owned by a nearby monastery,

which, like so many,

was far wealthier than a religious institution needed to be.

Where once a small hospital chapel stood,

an ornate church was constructed.

The town hall was given an especially opulant rococo façade,

the tower decorated with the statues of Prudentia and Lady Justice,

symbolizing the need for prudence and justice in governance.

The Princess's House was built in 1722 for the young Margravin Christiane Sophie,

who was banished here after giving birth to twins,

despite not being married.

The Zinsfeld Fountain was once in the main market square,

but had to be moved here in the 19th century to the Timber Market.

The column represents the four seasons;

the figure is carrying a short flagpole.

According to popular legend, it's the statue of a soldier in the Thirty Years War

who fought to the last with only a broken flagpole as a weapon.

In truth, it's a mixture of two symbols representing a market:

the soldier is Roland from nothern Germany,

the flagpole refers to the southern tradition of raising a flag on market days.

Kulmbach today is a small town of 26,000 people,

still relatively remote, but a minor tourist attraction.

And if centuries-old architecture is not your thing,

there's still the annual beer festival.

I did finish The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. Absolutely loved it. Might be my favorite

Since then, I have moved on to Nier Automata for the PS4. This game is amazing. I can't even believe that this was made.

I don't know if you have heard of the original Nier. I loved this over on the PS3. Kind of a cult classic game.

Blends a ton of genres. So there's RPG elements. There's action elements.

There's shoot 'em up elements. It's like they just got into a board room meeting and said

"Hey wanna just put all of the different types of games together?" And they said yes.

Yes we do. We'll call this Nier. So check these games out if you haven't.

What have I picked up recently that is a little obscure?

Black Sigil. Have you heard of this game? Have you played this? This is a JRPG

on the Nintendo DS. Has a complete SNES RPG vibe to it. I popped it in last night just to check it out for a little bit
