dress down world. This is your friend Ed,
and in today's video I will talk to you
about some errors, some very common
errors that many guys make when they are
wearing ties and how you can avoid
making these errors. So if you want your
ties to look perfect, or if you are just
starting to wear ties, this is definitely
the video that you have been waiting for!
Alright, so the first error that I want
to talk to you about is choosing a tie
that doesn't match the rest of your
outfit, so dedicate some time to study a
little bit about color and make sure
that the tie that you will be wearing
will complement your shirt and your suit.
It doesn't have to be a perfect match in
terms of color but it needs to be
something that matches... that works
together with the rest of your clothes.
So, that's the first thing that I really
recommend you pay attention to. Now, the
second error that I want to talk to you
about, and I have already written a lot
about this topic, is to avoid wearing
clip-on ties at all costs. Unless you
have arthritis or other some kind of
condition, there is absolutely no excuse
to be wearing clip-on ties, so please
don't do it. I don't want to see any
clip-on ties on you guys, okay? Okay, why
don't we talk a little bit about
proportions because that is also very
important. So you don't want your tie
to end up being too long or too short, so
when you are choosing a tie and the knot
that you will be wearing with that tie
pay attention to how you do things and
follow the very simple rule of thumb
that the tie should end were your belt
starts, so that's very easy to follow,
just pay attention to how you tie your
tie and you will easily be avoiding
this mistake. So now that we are talking
about proportions, there is another
proportion that is actually crucial and
that is the width of your type you don't
want your tie to be super wide or super
thin in comparison with the rest of your
outfit, so again guys, the good news is
that there is a very simple rule that
you can follow and that is that the
widest point of your tie should be
about as wide as the widest point of
your jacket lapel. Again, easy rule to
follow, so there is really no excuse to
be wearing super wide ties or super
thin ties. Now, moving on from proportions...
well... it's kind of related to proportions,
this error is one that I see many guys make
and that is that they don't take into
consideration the shape of the collar of
the shirt that they will be wearing, so
when they are choosing a tie or the knot they
will be wearing with this shirt, they
usually go with a knot that they already
know or the easiest knot, when in reality
the shape of the collar, whether it's a
cutaway collar, a point collar, spread collar,
usually the shape of the collar dictates
what would be the best option of knot
when you are tying your tie, so just pay
attention to it, always consider the
whole picture... how your tie will look
with the collar that you will be wearing
and this way the combination of your
shirt and your tie will look much better.
Now moving away from proportions for
real, this is another very, very common
mistake that I see many guys make, even
guys that are usually in a tie, and that
is that they simply won't use the keeper
loop. Now, what is the keeper loop? Well,
I'm sure you have seen it. It's that
little extra piece of fabric that it's
on the back of the blade of the tie. So,
what is the purpose of the keeper loop?
Very easy! It is just meant to keep the
tail of the tie, which is the narrow end
of the tie, out of sight once the tie has
been tied. So, if you don't do that you
run the risk of -and I'm sure you have
seen this- the tail of the tag showing
when you do some specific movements or
just when you are sitting down, the tail
of the tie can show if you don't use the
keeper loop, so it can look untidy, it can
look unclean... so another thing that you
should pay attention to, just to make
everything look perfect. And now for the
last error that you should be avoiding
when wearing a tie, and this is also very
common, is that many guys will think it's
uncomfortable to wear their ties tight
around their collar, but that's the way the
tie is supposed to be worn! Some say
that it just feels uncomfortable and
that is probably because the shirt
doesn't fit, but if the shirt fits you
correctly, especially the collar of the
shirt, there is no reason why a tie
should feel uncomfortable at all! So what
these guys make is that they will just
wear their ties loose and that definitely
looks unprofessional, it doesn't look
clean and that is not really the way
the tie is supposed to be worn. I mean,
it's okay if you loosen the tie a little
bit when you go for some drinks with the
friends after the office or when you are
at home doing some paperwork... things like
that, and you want to feel just a little
bit more comfortable, then that is ok, but
when you are going for a professional
image and you want the tie to look
actually perfect, you should definitely
keep the tie tight in place around your
collar. And with that I am finishing this
small list of errors that you can avoid
when you are wearing a tie, so that it
looks better, so that it looks
professional, but maybe I missed a few
