How do you combine alcohol and studying?
When you're hungover it's kind of shakey..
Are you part of a student association?
How much time do you spend studying?
Welcome to the Q&A, this is part 2 of 2.
Did you miss part 1? Watch that first!
This Q&A is filled with questions that
I recieved via Snapchat.
I kind of expect that they will be somewhat
more alcohol and student association related.
Curious? This is the video to watch.
My room mates are going to join me,
so let's get started!
Shall we continue with the Snapchat questions?
Yes!
If you aren't following me on Snapchat, add me:
We have a few questions from our followers,
Let's start with Ashwin, the first to send a question:
'Yo fella, it would be cool to join your next vlog
for a short glimpse.'
Shout-out to you Ashwin!
Ashwin, this is not a question,
that's not how it works..
M: I like that question!
C: On top of the Library!
If there's snow you can sleigh off it,
when it's sunny you can chill on it.
C: Or roll off..
M: I think the nicest faculty is..
C: Industrial Design!
M: No.. Architecture! The oldest building.
Oh! I know my favorite spot.
A toilet in Mechanical Engineering,
it has a Harry Potter-style circular sink,
C: The Chamber of Secrets
C: Or the lift in EWI
The one that's really fast
M: Shout-out to the falcons on top of EWI!
C: I'm going to look it up for you
Why don't you do it yourself?!
'The deadline for enrolling for ID in 2017
has just passed'.
There is Numerus Fixus for sure.
Usually most people get in,
except for a few. Good chance you'll get in.
I like that question.
M: That has increased a lot since my Master
Let us two start, we're both Bachelor students,
On IO (=ID), we have #IOLIFE,
which kind of is a thing.
You're basically on campus everyday from 9-6
in your first year of ID.
Basically because you have lots of projects
And then you have WB, where the first year
students have lots of freedom and can
stay at home if they want. But that's also
dangerous because you might chill too much..
And fail your studies as a result of that..
That are few compulsory lectures, and you
are free to attend lectures.
It's nice because you can re-watch everything
at home, but the danger is that if your
hungover or you're lazy or not in Delft,
you easily skip lectures and start lagging.
C: At the end of the day compulsory lectures
do have a positive effect on grades.
But it is less fun.. However..
C: I have had occasions in which I was still
in last nights Lorre party clothes
M: For people who don't know what Lorre is,
it's basically thé student night-club in Delft.
C: I mean drawing in the morning can easily
be done hungover
M: Are your lines still straight then?
C: A bit wobbly but that's fine
C: In your first year you want to party as
much as you can with your new friends etc.
And at the same time you want to pass exams..
C: Yeah, you want that aswell.
C: But when you become older you start
considering the consequences of drinking and
how it will effect your studies the next day.
I really didn't think about that in my first year..
It's part of the student life. We always say:
"To study is to combine"
You want to enjoy the student life,
but at the same time, you are in Delft to
study and graduate.
After a few months you'll find the balance
between both ends.
M: You are also guided in this process,
by friends and people from your study.
If people around you are studying really
hard then you will start aswell.
Exactly, when people around you are
already working on previous exams to practice,
and you haven't yet opened a single book..
Then you know it's time to get started!
And that's when you study 2 weeks straight.
You gotta do what you gotta do.
C: But exam weeks are also quite nice,
we study together with our other room mates,
cycle to the library in the early mornings.
And go back home for dinner together and
then go back in the evenings together aswell.
It works; if everyone goes then you'll join
Especially the higher-year students force
the first year students to come with,
because they often don't give a sh*t.
Your going to your lecture. Wake up!!
M: Actually we need a real first year,
Iris maybe?
C: Yea, she can tell something about her studies.
We're going to get a first year who
quit studying this year.
C: You don't want to talk about your study
but you do want chips..
M: Look! A wild first year appeared!
C: We can say really funny things and then
Hugo will put it in the video.
You're damn right I will
M: We're here with Iris. Tell us something.
Iris (I): I just didn't like the study programme.
Did we already discuss why you stopped?
I: Because I didn't like it.
It was too theoretical,
M: You did have all your points, right?
I: Yep! Almost all of them
It was too much Physics and Maths.
M: A more practical study would suit you better?
I: Yep!
M: Dear viewers, next time in.. laughs
Thanks Iris!
C: Good luck with your next study!
I: Thanks for the chips!
with selfie, I like it Mitch
M: There are tons of oppertunities.
You can go for the hardcore research,
CERN or continue with a PhD, we won't discuss that.
Or something else, like Philips?
C: I'd like to work at Philips.
Design Medical apparatus for example.
M: Or something completely different,
consultancy, finance, etc.
You don't have to end up being an engineer.
C: I think a TU Delft diploma is a really
solid and stable base for all jobs.
So Mitch, don't know what you want to do when you grow up?
Study at a Technical University!
C: I've heard that it's quite tough,
but if you like it, go for it!
But it is one of the tougher studies in Delft.
A question from Philippe:
Oehhh! #TUDELFTFUNFACT
The TU Delft was founded as the Polytechnic
University of Applied Sciences, in 1842.
By King Willem the 2nd. Or 3rd.
It was originally a school to educate engineers
for Indonesia (colonies), to design and build
roads, railways, irrigation systems, etc.
C: Isn't it the TU Delft's 175 birthday this year?
Yep. 175 years.
M: You can calculate that
That was the #TUDELFTFUNFACT of this video.
C: I am a part of Virgiel
We are both part of the DSC
We live with 12 people, 6 guys and 6 girls,
6 Virgiel, 6 DSC.
As we already said, have a look around
in the Owee to find out what you like.
There are sport clubs, rowing clubs,
music clubs,
M: Whatever, there is a lot of choice in Delft.
There is a lot of variety. For example:
You don't like one rowing club?
Well, there's another one if you want.
Disco Lorre is a good one.
But next to that the clubbing is kind of
centered around the associations.
You'll have a few drinks and that can end
up into becoming a party.
C: There are real party clubs,
there is one street where they all are.
But Delft is student-association-ish town,
M: The clubs are especially open in the weekends,
when a lot of students go to their parents,
so they don't really go there.
There is always a party somewhere!
C: You can also go to Rotterdam,
M: Or Leiden
M: Utrecht
C: We haven't discussed this yet!?
If you're looking for girls: Leiden!!
awkward
C: Shall I say something about the guys
Delft is getting more and more girls
But there are still a lot of guys.
If you really focus on it, it will be obvious
But you get used to it pretty soon
And it's also quite fun
M: It depends on when,
if you keep up then there's no problem.
Compared to lagging behind all the time.
Some studies have a Numerus Fixus.
M: VWO (high school) Diploma with higher Maths and Physics.
That'll pretty much always get you in.
What did he say?
C: I think it's quite special that in Delft,
there are tons of different associations,
2 large rowing clubs, 4 large social clubs,
they all get along pretty well.
There is little to no rivalry between them.
And there are a lot of student houses
who lived with mixed associations.
Like we do
C: Which is nice, because you can go to all
the different parties. Double the fun!
Perfect in my opinion!
Next question is from Dick:
Due to peer group pressure,
if everybody is studying then you will too.
M: But you are really busy at the same time,
and you can get caught up in having
too much fun.
C: You have to find your own path.
Just find the balance between social and study.
Don't decide not to join a student association
because you're afraid you won't pass your first year.
That's just not true.
They even found out that people who are part of an
association have a higher chance of passing
their first year!
Because you have that peer group pressure to
keep you in check and studying.
So do you want to pass your first year?
Join a student association!
I went to all three cities, all to WB.
I just liked the ambiance in Delft better,
what I'd advise you is go to another
introduction day or whatever,
and head into town after that and drink a beer.
Just walk around, see if you like it.
For me, Delft was the place that felt like it
could become my home.
C: I just liked Delft more.
M: Same here.
Last question!
M: Just visit Delft.
I think you can visit when you are in 5V.
C: Or just hop in and ask random people,
'Jo, watcha doinn'?'
That's fine.
Allright. We've covered all questions.
We need to go downstairs for dinner because
we just heard the dinner bell ring.
Thanks for watching.
Massive thanks to you two for participating
in this Q&A.
If you liked this, give this video a thumbs up!
See you next time!
Byeeee!
What are we doing?
I don't know..
