hello everyone and welcome back to
english with Lucy today I've got a very
special guest I'm so excited about this
one this is Billy or Korean name Seong-Jae
ok Seong-Jae and he runs the youtube
channel korean Billy can you tell me a
little bit about what you do yeah so my
channel's name is just my name literally
and I usually make a video about british
dialect and british actors because i am
still fascinated by british english so
yeah but what I mainly do these days can
you believe been getting so much media
attention I mean have you been
interviewed by the BBC yeah BBC and ITV
aren't you me as well quite a few young
newspapers and TV shows actually so I've
left a link in the description box to
Billy's channel which you can check out
and you can see it will be hilarious
videos made speaking in really really
bizarre british dialect I mean we've got
Scouts which is from Liverpool you've
got done bridge or two veneers Rustoleum
geordie shore gym Mancunian mmhmm yeah I
was that Welsh one glass region quite a
few answering and how did you become so
interested in British tonic so two years
ago I went to Preston in Lancashire to
study as an exchange student what when I
was known university student so while
living there I could meet some
classmates from skilled crafts class me
to look for and Winchester so I was just
shocked by their asses yeah I hadn't
known anything about british dialect in
other different kind of accent before i
won't there so that was so shocking but
interesting at the same time so I just
got so interested in British darling
and that's how I actually started to
learn more about go to Scotland so were
you studying English University in which
city university yes in the UK is
satisfactory and South Korea eyes just a
living soul for capital okay underneath
each received pronunciation there or to
substandard English accent well mostly
in Korea most of the Koreans goals just
teach American English and yeah there
are not that money like learning
material okay we're british english and
just most of their you know material and
references are just about riskier
pronunciation with queen's english we
have every sound asleep so yeah just I
couldn't help learning just under the
one but there was no information about
british dialect so that's why i was so
shocked as well and so when you go to
learn a dialect how do you do it because
I mean you can rethink on the internet
and listen but you speak with a genuine
scouts at burbly that's where you want
to how do you achieve that so for for
the little collapses well since I had
quite a few girl friends classmates to
whom I yeah they kind of taught me I try
to learn their language and their accent
so I just managed to source some actors
from them since so at first I just asked
my friend but for different dialect I
there was I had no classmates from each
Tom Regan sister I just did lots of
research actually and like I can't just
go to the YouTube to watch lots of
videos and watch different actors watch
people with different actors so I
watched lots of videos and some british
TV shows and films which are filmed in
certain areas and that's a good kid yeah
yeah so if you want to get specific
accent then you can watch I mean what
would you recommend I guess you've got
peaky blinders or the earliest
yeah what would you recommend further to
the public coolio one well there is one
TV show which is quite popular in Korea
as well that evidence and that was done
with Bristol yeah so I could see some
Bristolian while watching skins and yeah
all of that what I remember is when I
also also watched punch IT Crowd I don't
creak ow and they're gonna Irish guy
yeah yeah I said I listened carefully to
him through her implants I just tried to
learn italian irish accents from him
that was really funny can you do you an
Irish accent like a tall whitey about
turning off and all again ha ha ha
that's a funny for exam so I'd like to
ask you a little bit about pure youtube
channel because what made you start the
channel and when we discussed it so I
actually started my youtube channel
right after graduation ok so just just
after graduation I just tried to get a
job as usual so I applied for for some
companies whose around I actually wanted
to work as a broadcaster or broadcast
journalist ok I was quite interesting
journalism and just broadcasting so yeah
but it didn't work out very well so i
just thought i could just make my own
broadcast and make my own broadcasting
station so yeah that's how I just
started my youtube channel I've done is
my own broadcast as a broadcaster we
found that
maybe and it's going really well as well
really bad just one thing I've noticed
is how well planned well scripted and
well produced your videos on which is I
mean you will not believe the amount of
time that can go into making one single
video so from start to finish how much
time you put into what your accent you
know well it's apparent because some
athletes are so difficult to me and some
accents are relatively easy for me to
learn which ones would you say easier
typical model England 10 like yeah the
absence in northern England are quite me
because I'm more familiar with a
northern accent yeah like you know
Georgie and gals Mancunian they don't
quite relatively easy for me but a
Glaswegian I'm edinburgh aspirants
tentative is arranged I mean make a very
different yeah yeah I also Irish one so
so maximum it tastes around one more one
more it's like learning a new language
yeah yeah I've got to achieve a certain
level of like fluency to pretend and dig
out the example sentences no maximum it
takes quite long but usually it takes
just in add one or two weeks ok copy you
that's a lot of dedication but it shows
because the videos that time quality and
when did you start see your channel
growing and the media retention come
again so that was in April yeah ok um
but I made a video about just London
moon area accent and scale
saying like chicken is pronounced like
chicken in scales like that nestle yeah
yes and don't get yeah and it's also in
the single video I also taught people
about 12 people glottal stop my war ok
for yes that was so interesting and just
only yeah I've got me up some attention
from media I don't know why it's also
interesting to me because yeah I didn't
expect that I think for us it's just
fascinating it's seeing someone to
improve the upside of the workmen are
taking such an interest in to our tiny
little dialect so one thing I know
business it's done lots of interviews
with regional news programs and it's
because I think we feel very slaughtered
someone from South Korea for taking an
interest in our happens so I'd like to
ask you about your tip for the learning
English and particularly when you when
you speak do you think in career at all
well it's a perfectly like there are
some expressions that are only proper in
English like Torian in English concrete
translated perfectly so sometimes like
in some situations I just you know speak
I just think in English and just pick
out in English but in some situations I
just can't help thinking in Korean and
then try to find out which expression
would be like best life precisely
translated including which one so you
know so it depends actually but I'm just
trying to think in English and just
trying to get used to just speaking out
you know in
english depending on situation depending
on how I feel so loads of my subscribers
want to speak with a British accent what
tips do you have for them for their to
improve their pronunciation well I i
mainly make I usually make videos about
different kinds of British English but I
think it's very important to learn the
basic and land of undulation of British
English they're learning Standard
English is very important I also spent
lots of lots of time to learn Standard
English British English so yeah I just
so I started to I probably started to
learn British English when I was a high
school student at that time I just
watched lots of lots of british TV shows
doctor who was not popular at that time
yeah lieutenant doctor who he was the
next one unique so that was I watched
Doctor Who and yeah a lot of different
TV shows and british films are so
popular in korea smell so what watched
lots of TV shows and british films yeah
I couldn't help young just I couldn't
avoid using just learning material black
books so do you have any recommendations
celesta so i would say yeah i remember
it's probably news never one yes right i
mean i recommend it under one of my
video I brought these books I could be
the ones that you these books i actually
use so when they are like my precious
one ah yeah that's just the intermediate
level yeah this is the ones that i
always recommend room you just learned
when I was teaching in London this is
the one I think this is more modern
though I have an older version yeah so
you which one has you start with this is
the speaking of local
mm yeah and I started with this one and
I move once it up blue ones and that is
there a faster way oh it's still quite
difficult to me as well even for now I
imagine it to me as well it's really
like to support to me but I like I
finished all those three books okay yeah
so yeah but what's really nice so I
think it comes to me what we have to get
across is that if you want to speak
English it's not just about the
pronunciation and we do have to put the
time in with the grammar as well from
Iran because it's kind of foundational
English yeah wonderful well thank you
very much for coming on my channel and
letting me interview you my pleasure it

enjoy the rest of your stay in New
England thank you where are you going
