[gentle music]
- So how long have you been married now?
- Been married for ten years.
- And then you got a couple of--of--
two young boys?
- Andrew is five. Amaré is one.
- Yeah.
- And, uh, they were both home births, at home.
- Nice. Yeah, we did one of those.
- Did you?
- But didn't--you had quite a traumatic experience with it?
- Yeah, the first one I delivered myself.
- No way. - Yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah.
- So what happened?
- She had her first contraction at 11:00 p.m.
And he was born at 2:23 in the morning.
- Yeah, well, that's... - So it was 3 hours, 23 minutes.
- That's pretty rapid. - For a first baby.
It happened so fast.
She says, "I think I'm crowning."
And I looked down between her legs,
and the baby's head is all the way out.
- [laughs] - The midwife was on the phone.
She said, "Great, just wait for Mommy to push again."
Sure enough, she pushed... - Wow.
- His little body wriggled out.
He cried immediately.
So I didn't have to, like, slap him,
make sure that he's breathing. - Yeah, yeah.
- So she's on all fours,
and the baby's back here.
So I have to pass the baby between her legs,
so she can lean back, put the baby on her chest.
And within a few seconds, they start nursing.
- Wow, wow. - You know?
- Good for you. You know, what an experience.
- In this situation, it worked out.
- Oh, that's great. That's great.
So you seem very connected to your character Randall
in "This Is Us." - Yeah.
Randall has lost his adoptive father
and has never met his biological father.
So there's this sort of paternal hole
that he has in his life.
And my dad passed away when I was ten years old.
- Wow.
- Um, and so it's-- it's interesting.
I'm 40 now,
so I spent 3/4 of my life without him.
But what I remember more than anything is that
he loved me.
- Mm.
- Like, unequivocally, You know what I'm saying?
Like, that kind of love,
you can't understand it until you have kids yourself.
- That's true. - Right?
- It is true, yeah.
- And then once you have them, you're like,
"They can never love me as much as I love them,"
because they're just here,
like, I just love that they're here.
- Yeah. - You know?
I was that for my dad
and he let me know every chance he got.
Like, I catch myself saying,
I say, "Did I tell you I love you today?"
Because my dad would say that all the time.
I'd be like, "Yeah--" - So you can remember that?
- I can remember. - Which is so, so important.
- Absolutely. - So good for you.
- Man, and it's-- I just try to pour it all back
into these children that I have right now.
And so, on "This Is Us," I definitely think that
Sterling and Randall kind of meet
in terms of trying to fill that hole
and then also trying to be the best fathers that they can be.
- Yeah. - Yeah.
- You know, it was a really honest, lovely chat
with Sterling about his-- his dad and his family.
And, you know, having lost my dad as well,
there's a definite sort of connection.
And I always say the wild creates bonds.
And where there's bonds with people, there's strength.
And out here you really need it, you know?
The fluff of life is blown away.
And it's a bit more raw.
And that's good.
