"In The Previous Episode"
Ha! Nobody told you not to pay 20 Fish!
What's this?? Where are we??
This is a different room, not mine!
That's because of this timeline.
You came back again?!
Do you have a problem with that, criminal scum?
I come and and leave whenever I want to!
And why am I involved?? He's the one who bashed you!
You are also responsible for the events that have transpired now!
But, wait! What timeline are you talking about?
What are you on about?
Because of all your violent fighting,
you have created a rift in space-time,
which has teleported you to an alternate timeline, different from your original timeline.
But I have my nice memories in my old room...
What's so nice about that room?? As if you are a real collector!
Watch your tongue!
Now is not the time for violence! The episode has begun!
So you have to start the review. Think of your problem later.
Hold on, one last question. Which timeline are you from?
*laughs*
I don't belong to any timeline, Mr. "20 Fish Guy".
I am the narrator of this story, and nothing more. *laughs*
Lucky...
Drop this nonsense, and let's start the episode.
I will start with an introduction to the series that you will review,
and it will be the Dragon Ball Budokai Trilogy.
Dragon Ball. This is the anime that has served as an the inspiration for many authors for Japanese comics,
or in other words, manga.
The manga of Dragon Ball was released in the year 1984
by the author Akira Toriyama,
and the anime was released in 1986.
The series was an astounding success.
It is interesting to note that the manga that covered the first season of the series
and the season "Z" is under the same name,
unlike the anime which separated the two seasons by calling the sequel "Dragon Ball Z".
Without this anime, we won't be seeing other popular anime series
such as Naruto, One Piece, Bleach and other popular anime.
Additionally, the the authors of these stories consider Akira as their main superior.
Nowadays, we see on TV "Dragon Ball Super", which is a sequel to Dragon Ball Z series
after a long hiatus.
At any rate, we will not talk about the anime more than that
because it's not our main subject.
In this episode, we will discuss about the most famous Dragon Ball games
which most people consider to be the best of the series.
On the topic of the games,
despite the old age of Dragon Ball, the gaming franchise still continues which is still very enjoyable even today,
and that serves as proof of its strength and popularity,
We will review in this episode the Budokai trilogy,
and I will leave the review to the reviewer...
the pathetic one.
You mean this me in this timeline, right?
I didn't know how to organize the games correctly.
What are you doing?
I am searching for the game! You know, I'm in a new room, and I don't know where it is even!
Catch! There it is!
Alright then! Start now!
Dragon Ball Z Budokai
The game was released on PlayStation 2 in 2002,
and on GameCube on 2003.
We don't know why there's a delay between the two versions.
In any case,
the game was published by Namco in Europe and Japan
and by Atari in the US.
It was developed by Dimps, who worked on a lot of games
such as Sonic Unleashed, Generations and Colors,
as well as the Street Fighter 4 series and 5.
Along with that, they worked on the Xenoverse series of Dragon Ball.
About Dragon Ball Z Budokai.
This is the first Dragon Ball game that was released on the generation of PS2, GameCube and Dreamcast.
It was considered to be a real Dragon Ball game back then.
The intro was taken from the intro of the anime,
but with 3D graphics,
and it looks good, to be honest.
This intro for the US version only
and with song "Rock The Dragon".
Not to mention that it's the first Dragon Ball game that was dubbed in English by Funimation.
They did such a great work in dubbing,
that it may be considered even better than the original Japanese dub.
The game is a 3D fighting game set in the Dragon Ball universe,
and it includes 21 characters.
There is a button for punching,
a button for kicking,
a button for blocking,
and a button for Ki shots.
Finally, there's the throwing button.
An important feature is flight during battle and it works great.
One of abilities you can do in gameplay:
the ability to transform during the fight.
You can turn into a Super Saiyan
with Goku,
Vegeta,
Gohan,
and Trunks.
By the way, they were they only ones who transformed into a Super Saiyan at this time.
There are other characters who have their own unique transformation.
The transformations give you a boost in power and speed.
But keep in mind that the Ki bar will steadily decrease, but slowly.
Fortunately, you have the ability to charge up the Ki
by pressing the block button and back twice
with the D-Pad and Analog stick.
It depends on the controls you are using.
About the game mechanic and the moves.
The game uses combos like other known fighting games,
and you can charge a hit in the middle of the combo,
and that is a unique feature.
Not to mention, there are special moves, and they can be performed in different ways than other fighting games.
There are 3 kinds of them:
normal special moves,
mid-level special moves,
and the ultimate moves.
These special moves can only be done during the combos.
The normal special moves can be done by a simple order in a combo.
They usually are projectiles, and these moves are done in real-time.
Secondly, the mid-level special moves that can be done with a slightly harder order,
and it's much stronger.
But the problem is that it's shared with many other characters,
and it's just a simple cutscene where you hit your opponent.
About the ultimate moves,
doing them is harder than the previous ones,
and they are exclusive to major characters.
They have much longer animations, and they are the most powerful moves in the game.
But keep in mind that the special moves require certain numbers of Ki bars,
and the Ki increases by charging or successful combo hits.
The gameplay is very simple and doing the special moves, in general, is quite easy.
One of the available features is editing and customizing the characters.
You have the normal with already preset moves, and you have custom.
In custom, you can assign special moves for the characters,
and you can put special moves that aren't included in normal mode.
So play as custom after adding all the character's moves.
The moves and abilities are in the form of capsules.
The red capsule is for exclusive moves,
the green is for character states during a fight,
and the blue ones are for common special moves shared amongst the characters.
The bad thing about the editing is that you can't put all moves for the characters,
and you must give up for something to add something else.
That's for some characters, at least.
You can get the capsules from story mode or by buying them.
Now, let's talk about the other modes.
There is the story mode, which is the best mode in the game,
and it simulates the anime well.
I didn't watch Dragon Ball back then, so I was excited for the story,
and I see it as the best story mode that's presented in any anime game.
The story covers until Cell's arc.
This isn't bad for the first game.
Of course, when you progress in the story mode, you will unlock more capsules for the editing mode.
If you finished the story mode, there are secret chapters you can unlock,
and original chapters that didn't appear in the anime.
Aside from the story mode, there is the versus mode where you can play against another player or a CPU.
Also, there is the tournament mode which is similar to arcade mode,
but the biggest flaw in it is that there are no walls in the battlefield,
and you will lose most of the time because of ring out.
If you won the tournament, you will get the money with which you can buy capsules from editing mode.
Anyway, the last mode is a hidden mode where you can play as Satan only,
and it's just a fighting against strong characters.
About the music.
The music is really amazing,
and it was composed by Kenji Yamoto,
who composed the intro music of Dragon Ball Kai
or Dragon Ball Z Kai in the US.
The graphics are good in general.
The weird thing is that the Kamehameha move is colored yellow instead of blue.
If you are a fan of Super Saiyan transformations,
the max transformation of it in this game is the second level
or Super Saiyan 2,
which is for Gohan.
Anyway!
Dragon Ball Z Budokai was a huge hit with the Dragon Ball fanbase.
But now, the game is outdated
after the release of the sequels which we will talk about now.
What's wrong with ya??
Go! Go! Go! Go and search now!
Okay! Okay! Geez...
Where is the sequel even??
Can't you do anything by yourself?? Here!!
Have you forgot that you are responsible??
You keep fighting me for "20 Fish!!" "20 Fish"!!
HOW ABOUT I CUT YOU BOTH TO 20 PIECES INSTEAD??
STOP RIGHT THERE AND START REVIEWING!!
Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2
After the huge success of the original Budokai,
of course we would see a continuation.
The PS2 version was released in 2003,
and the GameCube version in 2004.
Again,
we don't know why the GameCube version was delayed.
Anyway!
We won't talk about the basics again,
but we'll mention the changes between the two games.
You will notice the exciting intro
in which they used anime cutscenes, and it looks amazing and pumps you up.
The second thing you will notice is that they completely changed the graphics,
and they made it cel shaded
or cartoonish graphics
to make it seem closer to the style of the anime.
Even the character selection screen is different,
and you have to scroll down and up to pick a character.
One of the changes in gameplay
is that you can do normal special move directly without performing a combo
by pressing forward and the Ki button or back.
Aside from that, the Kamehameha wave is now colored blue instead of yellow.
For the extra special moves, whether mid-level or ultimate,
they added minigame mechanics during them.
If the attacker won the minigame, that person will deal more damage to the opponent.
If the defender won.
that person will get less damage than usual.
Not to mention that they added new animations for the special moves
which looks more awesome than the orginal game.
The game includes almost 34 characters
since the sequel covers the story till the Majin Buu arc.
Let me also mention that there is a unique kind of the red capsule for specific characters.
For example there is a fusion technique using the Potara earrings.
Use Goku, for example, and give him the capsule.
When you do the special move that makes you fuse,
you will play a simple minigame,
and you must not let the opponent press the same button that you will press
or you won't be able to fuse for the entire match.
You will notice that Goku and Vegeta have fused together.
Even their clothes have altered.
Not to mention that you will hear both their voices in one body.
There is another kind of fusion capsule,
and it's the fusion dance.
This fusion can be done by Goten and Trunks, for example.
To do it, you have to press a specific order of buttons.
It's a fusion for short time, and it doesn't last long,
so the potara fusion is better
since it lasts for the entire match.
There is also what-if fusions that didn't appear in the anime
such as the fusion between Goku and Satan,
and the fusion between Tien and Yamcha.
One of the important flaws that they solved is having the capsule called Breakthrough.
This capsule gives your character all the special moves
without worrying about giving up on certain moves,
but it takes up all the slots of your character
which means you can't add anymore capsules.
But who cares if you want balanced gameplay?
By the way, the strongest transformation of Super Saiyan here
is Super Saiyan 3,
which is my personal favorite.
It can be used by Goku and Gotenks
Anyway,
the changes of the gameplay is good in this game.
Now let's talk about other modes.
Tournament is the same without any changes worth mentioning,
and the story mode
is completely different from the prequel.
It became like a board game,
and you control characters to beat the others.
There are things that you can collect such as money and capsules,
also the Dragon Balls that makes you summon the dragon
when you beat the game.
But first you have to find the Dragon Balls.
The problem is in order to get rare capsules such as Breakthrough,
you have to summon the dragon more than one time.
This means you have to beat the game many times to unlock everything,
and that is annoying.
There is a secret mode which is Babidi's Spaceship.
It's a mode where you can fight with different states.
This mode is only for high scores, nothing more.
Anyway, the PS2 version has a code that unlocks everything from the start.
Keep holding L2,
then enter and exit the shop repeatedly,
and you will notice that the number of capsules will increase.
This code isn't included in GameCube version, unfortunately.
So, I was forced to use GameShark or Action Replay.
By the way,
there is a very rare Japanese version of this game
with the name "Dragon Ball Z 2V".
It includes exclusive characters which are only additional colors for the main characters.
Anyway,
Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2 has succeeded well.
Here, I found the third one.
No need. I found the remaster.
But this one is the original version.
Okay, then what is this? It's an improved version of the original game.
Didn't you say you'll review classic games only??
Okay, then what is this?? Don't you understand?? This a classic game but improved!!
What's wrong with you?
FOR THE LAST TIME! STOP!
REVIEW THE GAME OR SERVE YOUR SENTENCE!
THE VERSION OF THE GAME DOES NOT MATTER!
Dragon Ball Z HD Budokai or Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3
This collection has the first and third games.
They didn't put the second one because of the story mode which some players found unacceptable.
Nonetheless, the original game released exclusively for the PS2 in 2004
and the remastered version in 2012.
Note that the original game released in 2004.
It's the same year when the second game of Budokai released on GameCube.
Who will care about the second game after the release of the third one??
In addition to that, the third game was released exclusively on PS2
because the disc size of the GameCube couldn't handle the game.
So that was disappointing for Nintendo fans at that time
who were expecting the third one to be released on the GameCube.
Anyway, I am excited to talk about the third game,
because it's the best entry in the series.
No! It's the best Dragon Ball game without any doubt! Even in these days!
You feel this game as more of a real fighting game than an anime game,
and the changes they made are huge compared to the first and second games.
Now, let me tell you about the changes.
Let's start with the character roster.
The game has the same roster as the second game,
with some returning characters,
and the best thing is the addition of characters from the movies,
alongside with characters from other seasons.
From the movies, they put Bardock,
Cooler,
and...
The Legendary Super Saiyan Broly!!
Did someone say legendary??
As soon as they announced Broly, I jumped because of happiness
to the point that my head hit the roof!
Anyway, the characters from other seasons that were added are...
Kid Goku from the original Dragon Ball,
Uub,
and Omega Shenron from Dragon Ball GT.
And what's more exciting than that...
They added the Super Saiyan 4 transformation for Goku and Vegeta.
The character roster is amazing in general.
Now, let's talk about the gameplay.
First thing you will notice is that the animation of the aura of characters
looks way better than the previous games,
and they look just like the anime.
Also, they made the Ki bar in columns
instead of one bar and having a number next to it.
Also, they added the ability to avoid hits
by pressing the block button when the opponent tries to touch you.
They also added the teleport counter, or teleporting behind your opponent and attacking.
You can do it when your opponent tries to hit you,
or even after the attack lands.
You will teleport behind your opponent and attack.
To do it, press forward and block.
When you transform, there is a longer animation than in the previous games,
and that is good so you can prepare for your next attack.
You can also fly freely by pressing back and up at an angle,
and the air combos gives you a chance to perform more extended combos.
About the special moves. Here, they work on a slightly different mechanic.
The normal special moves are like the second game.
Forward or back with the Ki button.
About the mid-level special moves, they were completely removed from this game.
Before someone gets disappointed,
the problem with mid-level special moves
is that they are shared with many characters,
and the animation of them is annoyingly long.
But instead, they put extra combos for the characters,
and every character has their own unique animation in combos
which differentiates each character from the rest.
For example, Piccolo can stretch his hand to reach his opponent like in the anime,
and Trunks uses his sword during fights unlike the first and second game.
Also Dabura, who uses a sword too.
They removed the mid-level special moves, but instead
they added more combos which is an amazing compensation.
They also removed the blue capsule because there is no common moves.
They put yellow capsule instead which are for using items during battle.
Finally, let's talk about the ultimate move. They exist in the game, but the mechanic is different.
When you press L2 or LT,
your character will enter the state of hyper mode.
This makes you armored, or in other words, a strong defense,
but it will drain your Ki slowly.
If you pressed the same button again, you will do the ultimate move directly,
but you have to be close to your opponent and the hit should connect.
Imagine that! You don't have to do a long combo.
Just enter hyper mode,
and after that, do it by pressing one button.
The minigame in ultimate move is 2 bars,
and each bar increases in 3 waves.
The players have to press a button when the second bar has increased completely.
The one who does it more properly will win with the attack or the defense boost.
The animation of ultimate moves are the same as the second game,
but with little improvements as well as more exciting,
and they are the best moves in the game.
You can also do in hyper mode what is called a "Dragon Rush".
This happens at the end of a combo.
It is three waves of attacks.
You will enter a simple minigame,
and the attacker must press a different button from the opponent.
If the opponent pressed the same button as the attacker,
the opponent will counter or block it.
With each wave the number of buttons you can press decreases.
But keep in mind that when you enter hyper mode, you must perform the ultimate move
or Dragon Rush in all cases.
Because if you run out of Ki, your character will get exhausted
and you will return to the normal state if you are transformed.
So use the hyper mode wisely.
There is a combo system that players discovered, which is combo cancel.
This system allows you to perform a very long combo, and it's a very well-known professional system.
Basically, when you do a combo
and charge the last hit,
cancel the charging by pressing the block button.
Then do a new combo, and that's it.
This system needs a very detailed explanation,
and you can find it in the internet,
and they are not extremely hard.
I advise you to learn this method because it can give you extra amounts of enjoyment.
There is a point that I want to mention about the fusion capsules.
They removed the fusion between Goku and Satan, along side Tien and Yamcha.
They put instead two extra fusions for Goku and Vegeta.
The one that can be done with the fusion dance
which results in the character Gogeta,
and the second fusion which is done during Super Saiyan 4.
Which means they fuse to Gogeta Super Saiyan 4.
This is the best fusion in game,
but the problem it lasts for about 10 seconds.
That's in the game of course, not the anime.
The reason is because he has a lot of strength and deals a lot of damage.
The best thing is his exciting ultimate move.
In any case, that's all about the gameplay,
and like I said, it improved a lot since the first game.
Now, let's talk about the other modes.
There is the Dragon Universe mode
which serves as the story mode for this game.
You can choose between 6 characters while there are 4 hidden ones.
The story mode is different from the first and second games.
You can roam around the world, explore and find money and items,
along with the dragon balls,
or you can do side quests that rewards you with a capsule.
The red dots on the map are the main quests.
The presentation of the story is just text with dubbing.
It's not like the first game, but it's not bad to be honest.
It's much better than the second game.
The story mode in general is good
and you can play as other characters, at least.
Alongside the story mode,
there is a secret mode that you unlock after finishing the story with all characters,
which is Dragon Arena.
This special mode is for fighting strong opponents at different levels,
and your goal is defeating everyone and leveling up your character.
Each time, the difficulty increases in it.
This is, by far, the mode I enjoy the most.
In the tournament mode, there is little improvement.
They put invisible walls so you won't ringed out of the arena,
but it doesn't last for long.
There is a secret mode that is in the tournament mode which is Cell Games.
What differentiates this mode from the rest
is that you can play in a wide battle field without borders,
so you don't have to be afraid of ringing out and play with your skills this time!
Finally, they fixed the tournament mode.
You will get the most secret parts easily, such as Breakthrough capsules and others,
unlike the second game.
There is a bit of info we must mention about the remastered version.
The music in this version is different from the original game
and they put the music of Tenkaichi series.
The reason is they think Kenji
have ripped the music from the official songs.
There is another flaw in the remastered version.
The ultimate move of Broly is censored a little unlike the original game.
because they think it's violent.
This is stupid, to be honest.
I don't get how a simple thing like this will affect.
By the way, there is a rare version of the third game
that includes exclusive characters as additional color of the main characters,
like the second game.
Ha! And he says the remastered version is better.
SILENCE!
Anyway, about my final opinion.
Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 is the best Dragon Ball game ever without a doubt.
Any fan of Dragon Ball must buy it without thinking or hesitation.
I advise you to get the remastered version
because it looks amazing in comparison to the original one.
But if the differences that we mentioned makes you care,
get the PS2 version,
and that's all about the Budokai Trilogy.
Okay, we finished the review. How do we go back to my original timeline?
That's not my problem, is it not?
You both are responsible of this problem. *laughs*
Wait! What is this?
What is that?
This is the Dragon Ball.
There are seven Dragon Balls. If we collect them,
We can summon the dragon, Shenron, to return us back to our timeline
Ohh nice idea! Alright, let's go!
Alright!
There.
Cell?! What brings him here??
Probably that is because of that space-time phenomenon.
There are characters from other worlds who have come to our real world,
That includes Cell and the Dragon Balls.
From the looks of things, he is after the Dragon Balls.
No, we won't let him!
We can't beat him!
Take this!
What is this?
These are Potara earrings! You have to fuse in order to defeat him!
I fuse with this scumbag??
Alright then! Enjoy your death at the hands of this criminal scum!
Okay! Okay! We'll fuse! We'll fuse! Alright...
Alright!
Nostalgic Shadow with 20 Fish Guy! What it will be??
Nostalgic Fish!
*yawn*
And what do you know?
Let's start the fight!
20 Fish...
Kamehameha!!
Haa!!
We defeated him!
Finally!
Alright! Let's use the Dragon Balls.
Let's go!
Wait! Wait!
Remove these... we look funny.
O Great Dragon!
I summon you to grant my wish!
You who have summoned me,
tell me what is your wish.
Great Dragon,
I wish to return to our original timeline.
My apologies.
I don't have to power to grant that wish,
because my power is limited within the bounds of this timeline.
Okay!
I wish for a pile of fish!
Your wish has been granted.
What? You don't want to go back??
What's the point if we are in the same time period? By the way, stay with your incomplete game collection.
Do you know? This guy is smarter than you.
Alright! Alright!
I will accept this current reality and stay in this timeline, that's it.
Finally, you understand the matter.
Now, our dear viewers.
Thank you for watching, and see you in the next episode.
