Today I'm learning secrets from a world-famous food
photographer.
Welcome to prop land.
My heart is racing.
Matt is a pretty big deal, so my plan is to play it cool.
Ooh!
You're looking at a food photography rock star.
Matt Armendariz.
If you don't know the name, you definitely know his work.
From bestselling cookbooks to some of the world's biggest
brands, Matt shoots it all.
Now, spending the day with one of the best
food photographers in the world can be pretty intimidating.
But the thing is-- it's me!
Hey!
--Matt is the nicest guy you'll ever meet.
If you were thinking that an amazing photographer
would have a cool house and fantastic taste,
you'd be right.
Matt shares his incredible house with his husband, Adam.
Hey, Adam.
Joy is here.
Hello!
Hi, how are you?
Really good.
Adam is a world-class food stylist.
So he and Matt often work together.
I'm going to go show them the backyard,
and then we might hop over to the studio.
OK. Enjoy.
Have fun, you guys.
Thanks.
Matt and Adam are currently transforming their backyard
into an amazing outdoor space for entertaining, cooking--
wow-- and photography.
It's like a whole other outdoor house!
Yeah, that's kind of the goal.
Not only is there a wood fire pizza
oven and a huge grill-- dang.
You are living correctly-- but down the steps,
there's a modern fire pit.
This is fantastic.
And last but not least, the dance floor.
Just need to put a disco ball up above.
You do.
You go a little, like, you're very, like, Theo Huxtable.
So can we go to your studio now?
Absolutely.
I'm dying to see it.
I want to make a recipe and see you take pictures of it.
We can definitely do that.
OK.
This is my studio.
Wow.
Matt's studio is enormous.
And when you run a food photography studio,
an on-site kitchen is a must.
Get out of here.
No, actually, like get out.
[laughs]
Not only does Matt have every ingredient you can think of--
This is where everything gets made.
--he has another room full of things
that make food photos magical.
Ooh!
Can we run?
OK, this is the part of the studio
I've been waiting years to see.
[majestic theme plays]
Welcome to prop land.
Oh my gosh.
Matt's prop room is the kind of place you dream about if you
photograph food for a living.
My heart is racing.
I'm not kidding.
Literally, it's racing.
It takes years to build a collection like this.
Just metal pitchers?
Yeah, if you want some beer.
I do!
Hey, Joy, do you need some pepper on that?
And Matt has gathered the most interesting
collection of dishes and props you can imagine.
This is cool.
Yeah.
You could put, like, the tiniest turkey in there.
[laughs]
Now, Matt wrote a cookbook called
"On a Stick", which includes an amazing recipe
for homemade s'mores.
And today, I get to make it with the man himself.
Wow.
Do you think they're photo worthy?
Of course they are.
You made them.
They're beautiful.
These look pretty good.
I think we should take this tray
and go put it on the set and photograph it.
OK, let's do it.
So you're working on your book right now, right?
Yeah, I'm shooting my cookbook right now.
Are you using natural light?
Are you--
I'm using natural light, plus a strobe flash.
Look at you.
One strobe flash.
Nice, nice.
Cause that's exactly what I do.
OK.
And I'm using strobe today, but this could easily be a window.
I mean, it's just all about light.
When we're talking about strobes,
it's just another name for a camera flash.
Matt has his fancy strobe bouncing
light off of a white surface.
And let's see what that looks like.
Matt makes it all seem so easy.
Those are some good-looking s'mores.
And that looks really, really good.
Matt shows me how he can use foam core to adjust his shot.
White is reflective and will add light and color to the food.
Black will absorb light, and make the shot a bit more moody.
This is a trick anyone can use.
So if I toggle between the two of them--
Whoa.
--you can see that one simple little piece of paper--
That's really cool.
--made a huge difference.
So with the dark board, it brings in more of the detail.
Absolutely.
And the light in the back didn't change at all.
Right.
So say, I just want to style it and shoot it in a way
that's, like, super Matt bites.
Mhm.
Can we do that? Can we, like--
We can totally.
I would probably make it a little messy.
When I asked Matt to shoot it his way,
you could really see his creative process at work.
Oh, for styling purposes only.
Only for the sake of the photo.
There is-- I do so many things for my art.
I just want you to know.
It's amazing seeing someone so talented and experienced
doing what they do best.
But I'm not done yet.
That's going to suck in some light.
Yes.
And the result is amazing.
So that's how I would shoot it, for me.
This really is a signature Matt photo.
I love it.
I really like that you photograph
it the way that it is.
Wow.
You're good.
I get it.
You've taught me so much.
Thank you. -You're welcome.
Anytime.
It was so great to see you.
And best of luck on your book.
Well, I'll probably see you in the morning.
Because I put my sleeping bag up in your--
[laughs]
I love Matt.
And not just because he let me raid his prop room.
He's actually a fantastic teacher, and a great friend.
