Albert, tell me, please, how did it all begin?
How did you came to the idea? I understand that many artists dream of their cutters, but start to make it is a big job.
Where is this coming from?
My wife Sasha makes jewellery.
And she had the idea to make a hollow pendant which consists of three parts.
And she absolutely didn't know how to make it.
And at that time I started to learn 3D printing.
And I thought, why study it just like that?
I told Sasha I would try to make cutters, with which you would make this hollow pendant.
And I have even brought them to show you, Karina, you can see.
The first!
This three cutters ware made the first. It's absolutely awful, now I understand it.
-Plump, yes. - Thick rounded edges, fringe will remain, it is now I know it.
And that's all. So it turned out that Sasha has shown them, there are several color cutters were printed.
She showed it to her friends who are engaged in polymer clay. Showed it to foreigners on Facebook.
Showed it to our guys in a meeting. Everybody was very interested in it.
And we gradually started to make them.
Now, as Sasha jokes, it's 5.0 version.
We constantly improve, constantly work to make it better.
- Well, I notice. You sent it, then in two weeks: "We have another option, everything is new already, it is old stuff". - Well, yes.
- So all of it was for your wife. - Yes.
- Do you work with polymer clay? - Make something, but very rarely.
In general, what else do you make besides cutters? Do you work with metal, ceramic, with something else?
Well, I do, I am auxiliary master. I grind and polish clay.
Your wife is lucky! There is someone who does everything.
I make iron bases. With brazing. Casts for jewelry, bases and so on.
For rings, if you need anything. But started with this.
By the way, when a family started to make jewelry...
or rather, exactly the family engaged in making jewellery. Because it was interesting for everyone.
It was interesting for a daughter, for Sasha and for me.
It was interesting for me from a technological point of view and for girls from the point of view of jewelry.
Did you study 3D printing, soldering somewhere, or all by yourself?
Well, I always was a techie. I studied some applied things all the time.
Including automation, programming. Well, I was just wondering, I have not studied anywhere else.
And what's your education?
Engineer of power plants and automation systems.
There is something very sophisticated written in the diploma. Engineer of automation systems.
- It is something very far from the jewelry. - Exactly.
How long do you run this technology?
Let's just say, how much time has passed from when you printed the first cutters, to the moment when you began to sell it? Was it difficult?
The first cutters were sold in a week after the start literally.
And we are still improving, as already mentioned.
- There is no limit to perfection. - Yes, that's for sure.
How much time it takes to print a single cutter? Medium size.
I understand that large cutter takes longer to print, small takes less. Well, the medium size cutter.
I can tell you how much that was printed. This set of three cutters was printed in about an hour.
So, it is a very long process.
And then I still have to improve it by hand, because 3D printing is still not perfect.
So do you grind all of them manually after that?
Yes, our 3D-printer is very good, modern, but nevertheless, so final touch is needed.
And do you print them separately? Or is it possible to print three?
There is a working area table 22 x 22 cm here. So that's how much cutters it fits.
- Ah, so you fit them? - Yes, on a plane.
- That is, are they laying like that and are printing at the same time? - Yes.
- We have cutters in a store which are embedded to each other, they are printed that way. - And, they are printing simultaneously? - Yes.
- Interesting. - That is, once the table. We left from the house in Kazan, for example. I put a full table for printing.
And the full table is printed in about 12 hours.
- So, printed cutters are waiting for you? - Yes, when we will come, I will need to handle cutters, to pack parcels.
I see the cutters are very popular, and there are a lot of orders.
Well, I can't say that orders are too much, but artists are very interesting in it, especially those
who loves a creative approach to their work. And there are a lot of individual cutters orders.
People just draw what they need on a piece of paper, and we do it.
Albert, many people have a question. Can you make higher cutters?
Because some people need to cut, for example, a thick layer of mokume-gane. Is it possible to make a cutter with that height?
We can make almost anything. All that pleases the soul.
- There are artists who order a very interesting cutters. - And do you remember some interesting orders?
Irina Akulina ordered very interesting items, I even can't describe them now.
It is possible to ask her, she published it somewhere at her page, pictures of what we had made.
She promised to tell later what it is.
About high cutters, we have customers who ordered cutters with 5 cm height, which is very small in magnitude.

Any, any curved shape, any height. Well, almost any, restrictions are the size of the print field of the 3D printer.
I think such big cutters are not needed for jewellery.
We got an order on a cutter to make tiles from polymer clay, but for interior decoration.
- That is, the decorative tiles. - Interesting.
By the way, it is a cutter that we have, by Tania Maiorova #1. And the cutter height is sufficiently large and the size of 20 by 20 cm.
Yes, one more question about textures, also it's very interesting.
Since you make the textures also on my sketches, then a question.
What kind of material is it? Where is it come from?
It's photopolymer, which hardens under the action of ultraviolet light.
It's fairly common but very unpleasant material which gave me some pain before I figured out how to do that textures.
Seals and stamps are made from similar material.
- That is like a rubber band? - Yes.
It is liquid in the beginning, then solidifies.
- In general, how the process happens? I will, for example, send vector drawing... - That is an individual order?
I mean, how? So, you have the picture, how the process happens? Is this picture cutted or melted?
No, in the beginning we need a picture that clearly black and white, well, just contrasty, that was only two colors.
I translate all of this to a vector image, print it on a special film through which light passes.
And then the photopolymer is lighted, that's all.
And the parts that were bright, they harden in photopolymer, and those which were black, they remain empty.
And due to the balance adjustment illumination time and additives in the photopolymer, in order to remove the stickiness,
because it is very big as standard, you don't need it for textures. We remove it.
And that's all. The texture turns out with smooth deepenings.
And how long does it take to create just one tile?
At the beginning I fill a texture with photopolymer. Then it settles, so that all air bubbles will get out.
Maybe a few hours. But you can fill several textures immediately, and they are settling.
After this, take the texture, Oh not the texture — workpiece, it locates between two panes.
It is placed in a special lightening apparatus.
It is lighted about a minute on both sides.
After that it is rinsed in an ultrasonic machine.
After that it is rinsed with running water.
After that there is still tanning in the same machine, in order to give it the final rigidity.
About 10 more minutes. And thereafter drying at a temperature...
...in the oven, roughly speaking.
- So, is it all too long? - Well, yes.
- But do you make it with batch, yes? - Well, I can make one thing.
- No, I mean that is it normal to make several sheets at the same time? - Yes.
- It is not that it is one sheet, and you are tinkering with it all day. - No.
Spread a few pieces, fill in a few pieces, then light a few pieces by turns, because the apparatus...
of course, you сan use the device in which it is possible to light 10 pieces. But we have one thing fit.
You have so many equipment, I can't imagine how do you place everything?
No, we have a usual small home workshop where only one person works.
One more man helps, and Sasha inspires, draws forms.
Honestly, I have no idea how all of this can be done. I think it is so voluminous, time-consuming work.
- How do you manage everything? - Need to sleep less!
And where do you purchase materials? Just in the city, or there are some special sites?
Well, this is quite simple in Moscow, we have two plants in Moscow that produce plastics for 3D printing.
I will not name them, not to advertise. And we use our local plastic.
And the equipment is also local? Or did you bring it from somewhere?
No, a 3D printer is not produced in Russia. Although now I see our good enough printers appearing.
- And is only one printer working? - One.
Well, there is one that is constantly running. One more is for support just in case. We experiment on it and so on.
One more question, which, I think, are interesting for many people.
Generally, is it possible to order individual cutters or textures, so then it will not... they will not go out in circulation?
It will be made for only one person and this picture or a cutter shape wouldn't be replicated. Is this even possible?

- If you will order an oval, for example, and say us not to make it ever, it will be complicated. - Well, an oval, yes.
Because others can come with the same pattern.
In general, we refer to copyright very... respectfully, and do not make repetitions of other artists cutters.
Recently there was a situation, a customer, foreign customer, sent a draw to us and said that Luda Bakulina allowed to make a cutter by her pendant.
We first asked Luda if she doesn't mind.
She said, "Yes, yes, all right, she is my friend, thanks for asking" and so forth.
Firstly we always interested in opinions of the author, if it possible, after that do it.

they will cost the same as our cutters in the store.
That is, we do not take money for creating a model and everything else.
Since I'm a techie and programmer, I almost automated it.
I take just a line of this cutter, I wrote a program that makes models at once, that's all.
Exactly this process is quick, and thus there are reduce the cost of creating the model of this cutter.

A texture is more expensive, well in the store...
it costs 100 rubles more expensive than the price in the store (€8.5 totally).
Just due to the fact that we have to do an extra operation, it is preparation of an original layout, with whom all of this will be done.
