Hello everyone.
Remember how I explained Lord Varys's history in my "Which Supporting character will sit
on the Iron throne" video?
I said that it doesn't make any sense that Varys would care so much about Westeros?
In this video, we'll talk about Varys's vision in the fire and how it could have motivated
his actions.
I have always wondered why Varys took so much interest in who will rule the seven Kingdoms
because as I explained Varys's history in that video, Varys is not from Westeros.
In fact he hadn't even set foot in Westeros until Aerys appointed him as his spymaster
aka "Master of Whisperers."
This has been bothering me for a long time.
But what if the answer to this mystery lies in what happened to Varys in his childhood?
Maybe what he saw or heard in that fire set him on this course?
In the books, when Varys was telling Tyrion about the sorcerer, he said he still dreams
of it every night.
I'll read the lines from the books.
"One day at Myr, a certain man came to our folly.
After the performance, he made an offer for me that my master found too tempting to refuse.
I was in terror.
I feared the man meant to use me as I had heard men used small boys, but in truth the
only part of me he had need of was my manhood.
He gave me a potion that made me powerless to move or speak, yet did nothing to dull
my senses.
With a long hooked blade, he sliced me root and stem, chanting all the while.
I watched him burn my manly parts on a brazier.
The flames turned blue, and I heard a voice answer his call, though I did not understand
the words they spoke."
"Yet I still dream of that night, my lord.
Not of the sorcerer, nor his blade, nor even the way my manhood shriveled as it burned.
I dreamed of the voice.
The voice from the flames.
Was it a god, a demon, some conjurer's trick?
I could not tell you, and I know all the tricks.
All I can say for a certainty is that he called it, and it answered, and since that day I
have hated magic and all those who practice it.
If Lord Stannis is one such, I mean to see him dead."
What if it really was a god who answered that day?
We know one God who likes sacrifices to the fire.
In the show, Kinvara told Varys that she knew whose voice he had heard in the fire and what
it had said.
She asked him if he wants to know the name of the one who spoke.
(Clip) The thing is, the red priests
only believe in 2 gods, the Lord of Light and the Lord of Darkness.
They are afraid to say the Lord of Darkness's name for the fear of drawing his black eye
upon them.
So, that only leaves us with only one option.
It has to be R'hollor.
What if R'hollor appeared that day and spoke to them?
We know Varys is afraid of that voice because he still dreams about it.
What if R'hollor gave him instructions for what he needed to do, just like he gives instructions
to his chosen ones likes Melisandre, Moqorro etc.
And we know R'hollor sends different visions to different people.
He has different tasks for his followers.
He sent Moqorro to Dany but he also sent Melisandre to Dragonstone to help Jon.
I already explained how he helped Jon in my "Lord of Light" video.
What if R'hollor had a task for Varys too?
What if Varys was also one of his chosen ones?
Even if R'hollor spoke in another language, with the resources Varys has acquired in his
later years, it wouldn't have been hard to find out what it meant.
Abby Tabby has asked, "What do you think the lord of Light said to Varys?"
To answer this question, we will have to go back to see where his actions led and what
he has been doing all these years.
After the sorcerer tossed him into the streets, Varys slowly worked his way into a position
of power.
He made himself irreplaceable, and gained enough influence with the rulers of Westeros
to achieve what he wanted.
We know he has been helping Dany in the show, and in the books, he has saved Rhaegar's
son Aegon.
So, judging by his actions, it's seems like he is trying to put a Targaryen on the Iron
Throne.
But the question is why?
That's why I think whatever R'hollor spoke that day, it had something to do with Azor
A'hai or the Long Night?
Maybe THAT is the reason why he had been secretly plotting to put a Targaryen on the throne?
Sean Killackey said, "The biggest question I have about Varys is how he and Illyrio acquired
3 dragon eggs, and why they gave them to Dany.
Maybe it had something to do with what he heard in the flames?"
I completely agree with you Sean.
I think whatever Varys does always has something to do with what he saw in the flames, but
it's not the same for Illyrio.
In the books, Illyrio told Tyrion that he is trying to put Dany on the Throne because
Viserys had promised to make him master of coin, and to give him any castle of his choice,
even Casterly Rock.
Now he is helping Dany in the hopes that she will do the same for him.
It's still possible that he was lying to Tyrion, but we can't know that for sure.
As for how he got the Dragon Eggs, according to Illyrio, they are from the Shadow Lands
beyond Asshai.
(clip) Dragon eggs maybe rare but it is said that they can be found in Dragonstone.
Around the time of the Dance of Dragons, there were dragon hatcheries on Dragonstone under
the Dragonmont Volcano.
But recently, after Loras Tyrell took back Dragonstone for the Lannisters in the books,
Mace Tyrell said that Loras has searched every inch of Dragonstone, but did not find any
gold, gems or Dragon eggs.
According to Euron, he had a dragon egg too but he threw it into the sea.
And Jorah has told Dany in the books that "If Illyrio had known the eggs were like
to hatch, he would have sat on them himself."
Anyways, it's obvious that Varys wants a Targaryen on the Throne.
The only thing that confuses me is the way Varys said that ever since that incident,
he hated everyone who practices magic and it looked like he was against Stannis because
of Melissandre.
But maybe he told this to Tyrion to throw suspicion off him?
Also, Varys was the one who fed into Aerys's paranoia and sowed discord amongst Rhaegar
and the Mad king, which eventually led to their downfall.
At first I thought it meant Varys didn't want a Targaryen on the throne, but the more
I thought about it, I changed my mind.
We know Rhaegar had found something in the scrolls, which made him think he should be
a warrior.
The Most common theory is that he found something about "the Prince that was promised" and
thought this is why he should learn to fight even though he never liked fighting.
If anyone can find out what was in that scroll, it's Varys.
So, my theory is that Varys found out about the "Prince that was Promised" scroll
and he thought Rhaegar was Azor A'hai and that's why he fed into Aerys's paranoia.
So that Aerys would be removed from the throne and Rhaegar will be crowned as King.
But Rhaegar ran away with Lyanna after the tourney and died later, which ruined Varys's
plans.
So, Varys had to resort to the second option, i.e. his son Aegon.
That's why he saved Aegon, assuming that the child really is Aegon.
Varys and Illyrio became friends a long time ago.
Maybe Varys had Illyrio help Viserys and Dany as a backup plan, thinking Viserys could be
the prince that was promised too?
As for why the sorcerer chose Varys for his ritual?
I have a theory for that too.
As Melisandre has said again and again, "There is power in king's blood."
I have already discussed King's blood magic in my "Why the Whitewalkers only turn Craster's
sons" video.
King's blood is really important for Melissandre's rituals too.
She used Gendry's blood to kill Joffery, Robb and Balon Greyjoy in the show.
She used Stannis to conceive her shadow babies.
She also burned Shireen because of the King's blood in her veins.
She would have burned Gendry too or Edric Storm in the books, if Davos hadn't helped
him escape.
The only reason she saved Mance Rayder in the books was because she wanted to earn Jon's
trust.
Anyways, you get my point.
Even though Melisandre has sacrificed common people to the fires too, sacrificing someone
with King's blood is always more affective.
And sacrificing just a part of a body to get such results?
It indicates that Varys definitely has powerful King's blood in him.
I have also heard theories that Varys is secretly a Blackfyre, but we don't know much about
his lineage to know for sure.
What I am sure of is that Varys has King's blood in him.
What do you think?
Anyways, it's time for the comment shoutout now.
Today's shoutout goes to Dragongirl 15, who said, "If she picks option 2, I am worried
for Arya.
If it's true and she kills ALL the Frey Bannermen, then it makes her very lethal and
dangerous.
Walder Frey had Tywin and Roose backing him up to orchestrate the Red Wedding.
Arya would have killed Frey and his men all on her own.
I love Arya and wouldn't blame her for doing this, but it makes me worry for her."
I completely agree with you dragongirl.
If Arya manages to kill all the Frey men, it will make her very dangerous.
I am worried about her too, but it also gives me hope that Arya will be able to survive
against worse odds.
She is a badass and a survivor.
She can survive almost anything.
At least I hope she will.
So, what do you think of these theories, don't forget to tell us in the comments.
