– Hadnet explains Firas the pitfalls of copyright law –
(background noises in the café)
Hi Firas, how are you doing? Fine, and you?
I'm fine too, thanks. What are you doing?
I just discovered
that someone downloaded my video
and uploaded it to his channel!
I find that very annoying!
Firas, did you know that you as the creator have specific rights!?
You created this video, and that means
it's your work and you are the owner. Thus, there are certain things that only you are allowed to do with it!
–Consumer questions –
When will something be considered a copyright violation?
A copyright violation occurs immediately, when you upload and download something
that is protected by copyright law.
It gets a bit more complicated if you use a provider
such as "Popcorntime", as they in turn use file sharing networks.
You think, you are only streaming a film,
when in fact Popcorntime uses a BitTorrent.
That means, at the very moment that you "are only watching" the film, you are also uploading
parts of the file and sharing them with other users.
By doing so, you will appear in this file sharing network.
And this is exactly why you may get a warning notice.
What is the fine or penalty for violating copyright laws?
Violating copyright laws can easily get very expensive,
as you will mostly be imposed a fine upon the first written notice.
But, don't panic, you won't go to jail right away!
Thank you!
You're welcome. Everything clear so far?
Yes, at least for now!
Good luck. I need to go now, see you my friend!
Bye!
See you!
Listen, folks!
Watching films on the internet is only allowed on fee-based websites, in media centres or online radios.
You must not share your WiFi password with other users.
Finally, you should always be careful when downloading something, as it might entail a fine or penalty.
However, you will never get a "fine" or "penalty" by email.
If you have received a "fine" by e-mail,
simply delete it, as such notices are delivered by regular post only.
Last but not least, you should always use anti-virus software to protect you from any future problems.
If you have any further questions, contact the Consumer Advice Centre – they will be happy to help!
That's all for today, bye!
– Check list – Material protected by copyright law includes music, films and literature
Use only fee-based offers, media centres and online radio stations
Don't share your WiFi password with other users
Check thoroughly whether downloads are permitted
Install anti-virus software on your computer
A fine (warning notice) means in this case that financial claims are made. Check whether the request for payment is justified
