Casey Neistat interviews YouTube CBO Robert Kyncl Head of YouTube Business - Duration: 13:45.
what's up shenanigans John here and I am back I'm back today to talk to you about
the big KC nice that Robert canceled interview that he released today I think
it was out about almost two weeks ago but he just released it today I watched
this almost 20 minutes long it's a great interview if you haven't watched it I'm
gonna give you a little synopsis I'm gonna give you the condensed version
it's convinced as I can get I talk a lot but if you don't know who Casey nice dad
is he's phenomenal he's the rock star on YouTube and if you don't know who Robert
Kinsel is that's a little bit more forgivable he's a CBO he's a chief
business officer YouTube what that means is he's in control of all of the content
creators and YouTube partners and all of the major YouTube people who people
people who make a living off youtube he's that guy he's the one who controls
all of that the head honcho the number one guy that's him so Casey nice tat
being the ever village n't person that defends whatever he believes in you know
how he's an outspoken critic and advocate of YouTube but he's always
pushing the bounds of trying to make the platform better he nailed this interview
with the CEO of YouTube I mean most of us can't even get YouTube to return
emails sometimes to get help but he's able to get the he's able to get the CEO
to come out and sit with him and do an interview which I think it's fantastic I
think YouTube should do more of this to kind of be a little bit more transparent
and do a little bit more with their communication and outreach I think
they're sorely lacking now my first impressions of Robert canceled and this
is I think he comes out as your typical business leader he's been part of the
entertainment industry for a little while so he's been around but I'm always
interested when you see these people who don't look super old
he looks probably around my age and has risen to this stature in YouTube which I
think it's fantastic I think it's awesome I don't know about you but I'm
just very interested and that type of thing so the first thing Casey hits him
with is the whole Logan Paul thing so this was filmed almost two weeks ago so
it's before the Logan Paul channel D monetization issue this was right after
the Japan suicide stuff so he interviewed and asked you know what
happens at YouTube when these type of things happen what's what goes on and
Robert responds by saying well there's a lot of things that go on there's a lot
of complicated things that go on and no guidelines and procedures and things
like that so I think he's back peddling a little bit because of what was going
on then we didn't know what was going on and now we could kind of see the result
of what happened but from behind the scenes the way that it came across and
the Logan Paul thing that happens is YouTube's got beat up for taking so long
to respond and that ended up on the training page Casey specifically asked
how did this happen he said well there was a lot the way there their page works
so there was a lot of people looking for it which then pushed it onto the
trending page which is all fine and good but Casey's point was like how did that
happen you know and almost like how did YouTube let that happen kind of thing
when you know this is wrong I think Robert did admit I think that
there were mistakes there I don't think he he didn't outright say there was
mistakes but the way he was talking he could tell he was kind of being guarded
because of what was going on he did say that within 24 hours I did issue a press
release Casey did say well there was nine days in between that and they said
they were a little slow on their social response which was probably the biggest
one is letting the content creators those of us who were being affected by
what he did not really communicating with us so Casey did a good job of
painting him into that kind of corner and let him explain himself but in
hindsight now we could know why he was being a little good little bit guarded
in that interview is because I think they were still working through what
they were gonna do he did say that there was more considerations that they were
taking those considerations were not just for Logan Paul on his just him
personally is that all the people he employs so I think they it took him by
surprise to have to deal with such a large enterprises the Logan Paul whole
thing that you know all the people he employs it if they take away his money
there that it could impact it potentially impact a lot of people then
Casey also asked you know since we're going down that road of asking YouTube
to do something about it act quicker and do better Casey said well how do you
balance being the thought police how are they gonna handle being the ones to make
that moral judgment of what is appropriate what is not appropriate and
Robert did a good job of saying key that's the hard part as everyone is
gonna be morally outraged it's something that what Logan Paul did was a
black-and-white he did wrong but there could eventually be things where there's
one group that who says this is wrong and another group says it's completely
fine and YouTube's gonna be in a hard spot on that so I think they said
they're just gonna be tightening up their guidelines and they're hoping that
I think maturing those guidelines Procedures it's gonna help them answer
those out cries as they come up I'm sure they're hoping that they don't have too
many of those now they start doing the reviews in the videos there I think
they're trying to stop those from even happening so yeah good for YouTube maybe
they can't stop it maybe they can't but I'm sure they do not want another Logan
Paul situation Robert said no one feels good about that situation nothing good
came from that and you can tell that was a lesson learned for everyone
all around and then one thing Kacie brings up was pretty he asked some great
questions I know people gonna beat him up for not going after him too hard but
he didn't he asked about like the drama situation with sensationalism on YouTube
why everything kind of goes to the negative and the drama and he fired back
at Casey like the kid drama that Casey causes in Casey's sick fair enough he's
part of a problem you could tell by the interview Robert really doesn't like
that part he doesn't want drama and the sensationalism and that type of stuff
driving views which ultimately drives money and advertiser dollars advertisers
are gonna aren't gonna want their stuff on that scene you can tell Robert
doesn't want that to be the contributing driver for views because advertisers
still have to put ads on things and I don't think that's what they want to put
ads on you know Roberts constantly having to deal and I say Robert like no
I'm YouTube is constantly having to deal with marrying what the users want what
the contents want to supply to the users and what advertisers want to put ads on
it's a huge complex thing he's gotta be the condiment of it it's gotta be
extremely difficult because advertisers are dumped dumped dumping billions of
dollars onto YouTube and creators want to get what the users want and
advertisers don't always want what the creators and users wants and that's kind
of what they talk about a little bit they don't go in extreme amount of depth
but you could tell that's a difficult situation for them to manage one theme
that Robert Kensal talks a a lot about is it he wants to be very clear that the
success for the creator is a success for YouTube he didn't want to draw this
distinction between that he wants to say we're all on the same side he was very
clear about an adamant about saying if you're successful YouTube would seek me
successful they're not going to do things that are gonna make you
unsuccessful I think that's the part he wanted to kind of nail home that's one
of his main themes he's there is that you and I are gonna be
successful because YouTube wants us to be they don't want it to be unsuccessful
because if we are YouTube will fail that's our business model we need to be
successful for them to be successful I like the business model we may not
always like the things they decide but that's just the way that it works
Casey asked Robert what kind of Content Alliance he says he likes educational
and how to I think some of that's personal but I think he probably likes
that for probably advertiser reasons and he also says that he wishes that they
could get more female content creators out here so if you're female I'd be
working on creating some channels because he specifically called that out
as one of the things that YouTube is actually focusing on so that's a good
thing diversity out in this platform could only make us better one of the
things I thought Casey was kind of crazy for bringing up because it was kind of
calling them out as saying Casey talked about his past and everything he had
worked on the people in charge had always been part of it you know had
risen up through it he called the YouTube leadership out for saying look
you aren't content creators and you don't have a background and content
creating how can they be empathetic to their base if they don't do it and you
know then Robert goes and talks about his history and the entertainment
business while he's not a content creator he is very Pro content he
understands it in a very empathetic to all of our needs which is a good thing
to hear Robert brought up a really really interesting stat I don't think I
brought it up in my last video he said there was 450 hours a minute going up
onto YouTube and he also said there is 1 billion hours a day of content being
streamed on YouTube that is an astronomical number Casey also asked
about the ad pocalypse and how they went down Robert talked about how difficult
that was again like I mentioned the the marrying up of content creator geezers
and advertisers and making that work is extremely difficult for them because the
advertisers think that YouTube's always siding with the content creators and the
content creators are always thinking that the average that YouTube is siding
with the advertisers with you people with the money are gonna try to dictate
where they want to put their money and the people that have the ability to
actually put the ads out are gonna dictate what they want to do so I would
want to be in that position it's gonna be a tough tough job one of the things I
thought was very interesting is Casey called Robert out on YouTube out on the
yellow D monetization icon this wasn't real clear in this inner
view to me as to what he was talking about Casey called mount basically
saying you guys are putting the loss on the content creator you're putting the
onus on us you're saying we have to basically prove our content is okay and
so you take revenue away from us while they're trying to figure it out through
their algorithm Robert said that because of this icon I'm assuming he meant also
through their algorithm and stuff they're doing they've been able to lower
false positives by 30% with that because we're able to request a review and I
don't get that 30% of what before this whole D monetization thing came along
none of my videos work D monetized and I didn't have anything to worry about
so I'm not sure and it wasn't real clear in the interview I'm a throwback and we
watch it every watched it twice it still doesn't make much sense to me
I don't think Casey was happy with it because you know someone like Casey who
gets millions of views on a video is losing on a lot of revenue now for me it
used to be right after I put the video and II monetize and now it's usually
after a day or so so maybe they're thinking that most of my revenue was
probably built that first day and then they kill it for two days Robert said
the way to fix that is to not put your videos as public put them an unlisted
while they review it I'm like I can't wait two days two or three days every
single time I upload a video so I think that's a completely ridiculous way to
try to work around that problem I think they just need to do better
YouTube do better and finally they talk about communication Casey calls them
flat out and says YouTube hasn't had been notorious about not being good at
communication Robert fired back with saying they think
they do it really they do try very hard Robert says they do try very hard at
communication I think he understands that they're failing in that which makes
me wonder if they won't hire someone like Casey and to help them with that
Casey absolutely paints them into a corner saying you guys are not good at
communication you're not good at transparency when it comes to your
business he even says the YouTube has never been good about saying what do
they stand for what matters to YouTube and what to expect from that I think
Robert answers the question really really well when he fires back he says
they have four freedoms that they believe in the first is they believe an
opportunity they believe an opportunity for anybody to come out to this plant
platform and create a business or create an opportunity for themselves
be successful to make money that it's not locked down to any one person you
don't have to have money it's free you could come out here and anyone anyone
can be successful out here if you work at it and you put in the time and hard
work next he says he believes in the freedom of speech and the freedom of
information he says coming from his background and and from a communist
country he really really really values freedom of speech and information
because he didn't have it so he hopes people will understand he wrote a book
Casey put it up he held it up on his video and I have to go back and I'll try
to put that right here what the book is it gives a lot more background into
Robert Kensal and who he is Casey read it and said it helps him understand why
he makes the decisions he makes and who he is as a person it kind of and then in
turn helps us understand how YouTube is being run and the final freedom he says
he believes in is the freedom to belong to create communities out here and the
ability to create these community allows people to feel more comfortable with
what they share and they'll share more if they are part of a community and I
agree with that they try to foster that I don't know exactly how they foster
that but the YouTube community does do that and that's one of the main four
beliefs that YouTube believes in my overall feeling about this interview is
I feel that it was a good interview I think maybe kc- applied the questions
beforehand they were good questions though I know it didn't answer
everything I know we've had a little bit more things happen since when he did the
interview to now with the changes to the guidelines and all of that I think
YouTube is trying I think people need to be patient understand YouTube is a
business but not out here to only please the creators but they're trying to
balance that between the advertisers users and the creators we are going to
be the ones who are hardest on YouTube because we are the ones who utilize the
the the platform to create we are the ones who are getting paid by the
advertisers come so we're sandwiched in between what the users want with the
advertisers ones and what the platform allows five or Kinsel and YouTube are
trying to do the best they can for us they're gonna come up short it's just
gonna happen but I think the more and more they start talking to creators I
think they'll learn more I think people like Casey did a good thing by
doing this interview and he's hoping that they'll do this more and more with
other large youtubers and I think they should reach out the small youtubes or
smaller youtubers and try to get some of their feedback I think it will only make
the platform better and I think it will help all of us in the long run all right
guys I hope you enjoyed that synopsis of the interview and if you guys like that
please make sure that you hit that thumbs up and if you are not subscribed
please consider doing so thank you all for watching until next time I'll see
you
