Hi guys! My name is Simone, I am a motorcycle enthusiast who had
the opportunity of interviewing Mr. Ivano Beggio, the engineer founder of
"Aprilia Moto", a company that was later on sold to the Piaggio group in 2004.
Aprilia was actually founded by his father Alberto, but he used to produce bicycles
it was Ivano who started the motorcycle production and made the company
famous all over the world. I want to say that meeting engineer
Beggio in person has always been one of my desires.
I have always considered him one of the greatest entrepreneurs in the motorcycle industry
but what surprised me the most since the first
call, was his human touch and his immense passion combined with friendliness, I was impressed!
In few words, in a short time one can understand the reason behind his success! ... However,
getting to the interview; the questions were selected among those proposed by the various
fans of the brand, the interview is divided into parts
and the first question is: "how did it all start? how was this passion that
made you to create motorbikes born and what ideas did you put into practice to make
Aprilia so successful? "
FIRST PART: THE BEGINNIGS
I was born in a family that made small bicycles, made by a craftsman who was
my father, a wonderful genius, who taught me everything and
at 16 years old I already had the passion of 50cc moped and motorcycles.
I had a dream since I was a child and at the age of 16 I made my first 50cc motorcycle
and how did I do my small motorcycle? in the '60
in the '60 there were many artisans who produced all the components for
the motorcycle (50cc): some made the mudguard, some made the forks
some others the shock absorber, others made the rims, some the accelerator and some others the engine, of course,
and it was enough to go and get a piece in one place and a piece in another
and then put together and the bike was built…at 16 I had this dream
I had seen Giacomo Agostini and the MV Agusta who won the World Championship
and what did I do? I made a 50cc small motorcycle with a motor by Franco Morini, I still remember it,
with a long front fender, gold and blue.
Of course, thanks to my father's small handicraft company,
I used the company's painting system
and help from the guys who already knew how to assemble the pieces, so I did nothing else but
went, together with the worker who drove the company's van, to get the components of the motorcycle
from the various craftsmen or companies, took them home
and slowly I built the first bike, which was a sports bike (50cc)
The sporty image at the time was
the one of the "MV Agusta", which used to win, so I made a moped that resembled the MV Agusta
but with the colors that I liked, gold and blue.
That was the time when the passion began, and I told to myself: "when I'll become an adult
I want to build motorbikes, when I'll become an adult my big dream would be...
(and I thought this being 16 years old) winning a world championship with my bikes! a world championship with my bikes! "
I was there dreaming: "when I grow up I'll have a big factory!"
this was my dream when I was 16, that I never told anyone, but this was my dream
from this dream and thanks, of course, to the small company of my father,
with his experience and creativity,
I started and at 18 years I was running a small business with 17-18 people already
quindi già a 18 anni avevo iniziato so already at 18 years I became ... how to say ... a small business owner.
There I started,
of course I first started building and selling bicycles, in order to create a bit of economic margin
and with that I started making the first 50cc moped.
Of course my father was very generous, even with some conflict;
I loved my father very much, but we also had many discussions,
we had two equal but strong characters and when the characters are equal and strong
it is inevitable that there are discussions. Later on when my father realized that
I was maturing experience and that I had this dream of building a bike
or the first motocross bike (small) he understood that he had to let me do it.
He also had another business, a business that he had opened
in the village (Noale). I was not born in Noale, but at 5 years I was already there
and he was in charge of this commercial business and I was starting to run this small business.
So from the bicycles slowly we got to the 50cc motorcycles and from 50cc motorcycles to the sports sector.
It took a long time before producing real motorcycles,
but the experience made thanks to the races with the first small cross bikes
in Veneto, helped me understand that there was room to do something
serious in the world of two wheels and I left, leaving more and more the bicycle industry aside
remembering the experience with BMX bikes
in Europe I think I was among the first or perhaps the first to build it!
During a vacation in the United States
I saw the BMX bikes were already very widespread there while I had not seen them in Europe,
so I decided to build the BMX...but I wanted to realize my dream...
the BMX was not yet what I wanted.
Beginning with the cross bikes, I started doing the races, I did the first 125cc for the cross with the HIRO engine, which was a small factory
near Milan (very small);
the dealers came directly to pick the motorcycles with vans
I used to find four or five vans outside the company in the mornings; they came to load two, three or five cross bikes.
That because we started competing with 125cc motorbike
at the beginning with the pilot Ivan Alborghetti, who was a great character in the "world" of cross at the time
time and was also a champion or a vice Italian champion.
We had a great experience with Alborghetti!
We continued to sell bicycles and build some new 50cc motorcycles
to try and find the resources to pay for the races;
after that followed a period of continuous growth, but what was fundamental is that
the races were extremely useful to make the youngsters or new graduates guys,
I was hiring, what does "competition"
or "innovation" mean and how to apply the innovation coming from racing
on a series product, quickly. So the races
made me famous first of all in Italy, where I was not known,
then in Europe and then in the world and the racing experience was fundamental for
building the Aprilia company that everyone knows today,
a great company that builds motorcycles and that still wins and has continued to win
...I think today has come to 53 or 54 world titles won...
now I have to count how many I won when I ran the company, I think around 30, (in 2004 the company was sold to Piaggio)
because I won in many categories in addition to the 125cc and 250cc… however the races and replicating
in series products, were the elements that
led this company to be known in Europe, starting from being an unknown craft company
later on being seen as any company: "ah yes, there is also Aprilia..."
to become a point of reference for all global competitors, not just European, but worldwide.
IN THE NEXT VIDEO (part 2) In the next video we will get to know about the story of the name Aprilia and its logo ... we will also talk about the famous and innovative Aprilia graphics.
