Who is Kim Yo-jong? Kim family member to visit S. Korea for Winter Games - Duration: 2:09.
This is the first time ever a descendent of the communist state's founder is visiting
the nation.
Curiosity peaks as to not just what kind of message she brings, but who she is, what her
role is among the regime's elites.
Lee Jeong-yeon has some answers.
An unexpected announcement came from North Korea on Wednesday that Kim Yo-jong, the sister
of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, would be visiting South Korea to attend the opening
ceremony of the Winter Games.
This is significant in that it marks the first time a direct member of the Kim family is
setting foot on South Korean soil.
Her parents are late leader Kim Jong-il and his late wife Ko Yong-hui,... and her brothers
are Kim Jong-chul and current North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
She is Kim Jong-un's only sister,... and unlike the leader's brothers, who were pushed out
from Pyongyang's political scene, she has been promoted through the ranks at a lightning
speed.
Kim Yo-jong is known to have close rapport with her brother Kim Jong-un, as they studied
in Switzerland together as kids.
She first received media attention at the funeral service for Kim Jong-il in 2011.
In 2015, she was named head of the Workers' Party's Propaganda and Agitation Department,
and just two years later, was made a member of the decision-making political bureau of
the ruling party's central committee.
According to 38 North, Kim Yo-jong's political rise has been the subject of much speculation
since Kim Jong-un took office in 2011.
On top of the technical and administrative tasks she's reportedly handled over the years,
her growing involvement in politics indicates she's become somewhat of a leading image maker
for Kim Jong-un and the regime as a whole.
Kim Yo-jong's role has been compared to that of Ivanka Trump or Sarah Huckabee Sanders,
the White House Press Secretary.
"Kim Yo-jong's presence at the Games is a very positive sign because it means Kim Jong-un
is taking a proactive stance towards the Olympics, South-North relations, and North Korea-U.S.
relations.
He also wants to convey to the South and the international community that the regime can
be flexible."
The expert speculates that the regime probably waited to see which delegates were coming
from the U.S., as well as Washington's attitude towards Pyongyang, before deciding to send
Kim Yo-jong.

N. Korean leader's powerful sister lands in S. Korea; Pres. Moon greets North's nominal head - Duration: 3:27.
A North Korean private jet carrying a group of high-level officials including Kim Yo-jong,
the influential sister of the regime's leader... landed in South Korea earlier today.
All eyes are on whether there will be any kind of development in inter-Korean relations
during the ruling family member's unprecedented visit to the South.
Our Moon Connyoung joins us live from the top office.
Right.
The North Korean leader's private jet carrying a high-level delegation including leader Kim
Jong-un's sister landed in South Korea earlier this afternoon.
They're here to attend the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics - that's
in an hour from now.
Roughly twenty minutes behind schedule, the entourage led by the North's nominal head
of state Kim Yong-nam arrived at Incheon International Airport.
They were greeted by South Korea's Unification Minister and the deputy director of the presidential
Blue House National Security Council.
With that, the 30-year-old Kim Yo-jong has become the first member of North Korea's ruling
family to set foot in the South since the Korean War in the early 1950s.
After a brief encounter between high-level officials from the two Koreas, the North Koreans
including the influential sister of Kim Jong-un traveled by South Korea's KTX bullet train
to PyeongChang.
They have since arrived in PyeongChang... and the North's nominal head of state Kim
Yong-nam is currently attending the Pre Opening Ceremony Reception hosted by South Korean
President Moon Jae-in.
What to look out for from the reception this evening: will there be contact between the
U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and North Korea's ceremonial head of state Kim Yong-nam?
What kind of vibe will we see from the Moon, Kim Yong-nam encounter?
Are we expecting any contact between President Moon Jae-in and the Kim Yo-jong?
While Kim Yo-jong is NOT attending the Pre Opening Ceremony Reception tonight...
President Moon Jae-in has said he will host a luncheon for the North Koreans on Saturday.
Sources say an informal luncheon between Kim and the South Korean delegation would give
her more freedom to interact with the South Koreans than anybody else in the North Korean
delegation.
Hosting an informal lunch for the high level North Korean delegation avoids any protocol
format where only one main speaker has a voice.
That main speaker would normally be Kim Yong-nam, the head of the delegation and
North Korea's ceremonial head of state, but in this case, what the younger sister of North
Korean leader Kim Jong-un has to say will take much more significance and meaning.
Both sides are maintaining a delicate balance to avoid any diplomatic upsets that could
risk overshadowing the Winter Olympics.

President Moon's Olympic diplomacy continues on day of official start of PyeongChang Games - Duration: 2:30.
Before attending the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter games, President Moon Jae-in
will meet several high-ranking foreign guests.
Hwang Hojun fills us in on the liberal leader's 'Olympic Diplomacy' schedule.
It was an extremely busy day for the South Korean President on Friday as he held separate
one-on-ones with three world leaders.
President Moon first met held a luncheon meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
It was his third meeting with the UN chief... after the G20 summit in July and the UN General
Assembly in September.
President Moon said the atmosphere in terms of inter-Korean relations has changed dramatically
since his visit to New York.
"Led by Secretary General Guterres, the United Nations and the international community have
protected peace on the Korean Peninsula.
You have helped us to host a peaceful and safe PyeongChang Olympics."
The UN Secretary General in return said that while the Olympic Games are important, the
real reason he visited South Korea was to express his solidarity with the South Korean
people who have achieved the most outstanding success since the Second World War.
The Blue House also confirmed that the two leaders agreed that efforts should be made
to ensure that the momentum for dialogue built up during the Pyeongchang Olympics needs to
lead to dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang... to ultimately resolve the North Korea nuclear
issue.
Later in the afternoon, President Moon also met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
And with that, President Moon had met with all the delegates and heads of state from
the four key powers in the region, minus Russia.
During the meeting with Abe, President Moon first expressed his gratitude for Abe's visit
to South Korea and called for joint efforts from both Seoul and Tokyo for the two countries
to become, quote, "true friends."
"As I have repeatedly said before, I plan to work with the Prime Minister to pave the
way for future-oriented cooperation while looking squarely at history.
To do so, I would like to reinforce close communication at the summit level and restore
and improve shuttle diplomacy between our two countries."
Shortly afterwards, the South Korean President met with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
The two leaders exchanged views on how to boost their bilateral relations in areas including
the Fourth Industrial Revolution and green energy,
before heading to a pre-opening-ceremony reception for the leaders hosted by President Moon himself.

North Korean art troupe performs in Gangneung - Duration: 2:53.
Nearly upstaging the Olympic opener and closing ceremonies was a rare show put up by visiting
artists from up North.
Over 150-thousand South Koreans applied for a chance to grab the very limited number of
tickets available via lottery.
Won Jung-hwan turns the spotlight to the performances.
An audience of more than 5-hundred-50 people were treated to a unique performance by a
North Korean art troupe on the eve of the opening of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics
in the city of Gangneung.
The lucky audience members were randomly selected from a pool of nearly 40-thousand people who
previously applied for a ticket to watch the troupe's first performance in South Korea.
"I felt sense of cultural similarity regardless of its difference between the two nations,…
and the overall performance was well structured."
"Although we had a lot of expectations, we really enjoyed the show,… we could see that
they prepared a lot for this performance.
But at the same time, I wish this is not just a one-off thing just for the Olympics,…
I wish the two country exchange more after the Olympics."
The 140 member-strong art troupe otherwise known as the Samjiyon Band and led by Hyon
Song-wol , arrived in South Korea on February 6.
The band is comprised of more than 50 elite musicians known for their diverse repertoire,...
which even includes songs from U.S. animated movies like "Beauty and the Beast" and "The
Lion King."
Thursday's show at Gangneung Arts Center featured popular songs by household South Korean artists
such as Lee Sun-hee and Shim Soo-bong .
They sang songs which we were familiar for us to sing along,…
I was impressed by Choi Jin-hee's 'Maze of Love', 'Arirang', and 'Everybody ChaChaCha'.
Another widely anticipated performance was that of the so-called Moranbong Band, a group
of talented musicians and all-female singers who are known for their colorful performances
and are often compared to South Korean K-pop girl bands.
This marks the first time since 2002 that Pyongyang sent an art troupe to South Korea.
It is also the largest North Korean artistic delegation to ever perform on a South Korean
stage.
Meanwhile, nearly 300 conservative activists held a rally in front of the Gangneung Art
Center, some 4 hours prior the performance.
The protest ended without incident.

of Korea on Sunday evening,… one day after the joint Korean women's ice hockey team faces
its first Olympic match against Switzerland.
