Waching daily Jul 1 2018

Have you ever seen this gesture in a video game?

As we've covered in previous videos, this gesture has had a troubled past, often getting

edited out of the international releases of Japanese video games.

One example can be found with Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

In the original Japanese version of the game Bowser would use this gesture as his victory

pose at the end of every battle.

However, upon being released in the west, Bowser's victory pose was changed to two

clenched fists instead.

Another example lies in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.

Like most other games in the franchise, a trainer class that you can battle within the

games are the Sailors.

The sailors have been featured in the series ever since the original game and commonly

appear in water-themed areas and utilize water-based pokémon.

Differing from their appearance in all of the other games, though, Ruby, Sapphire, and

Emerald had them donning this same bicep polishing gesture.

This can only be seen in the Japanese versions however!

If you look closely, the western releases changed the sailor's sprite to move his

left arm underneath his right arm rather than on top of it.

Most recently this happened in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe where the Inkling Girl originally

used this gesture upon hitting other racers.

But this was quickly revised in the game's first update removing her left arm from the

animation entirely.

This prompted all major news outlets to report on the removal, questioning that if it was

such an issue, how did it manage to be left in the game in the first place.

Some of our viewers may wonder what exactly is the issue with this particular gesture

and why does it keep on getting included in Japanese games before being subsequently removed?

Well, the reason for this lies in its radically different meanings depending on where you're

from.

You see, over in Japan, it is seen as a display of confident determination and energy.

Lucy Moffat of Fluent U writes, "If a Japanese person wants to show that they're ready

to accept a challenge or work hard at something, they'll place one hand on the opposite bicep

and flex their arm.

This gesture expresses strength and resilience, showing that the person is prepared for whatever

may be in store."

This interpretation could be compared to the famous American "We Can Do It" World War

II propaganda poster.

On the other hand, throughout various of parts of Europe and Latin America this can be seen

as an obscene gesture known by many names, such as Iberian slap, Italian salute, and

more.

While the specifics vary from culture to culture, it is largely very offensive, equivalent to

giving someone the middle finger.

Thus, it's easy to see why localizers would choose to remove instances of this gesture

to avoid unintentionally offending people from different cultures.

In the Mega Man Official Complete Works art book, illustrator Shinsuke Komaki reflected

on having to redraw Guts Man's art from Mega Man: Battle & Chase by saying,

"This Guts Man was done for the overseas versions after we found out his original pose

was not acceptable over there.

Up to this point, my process involved line drawings, tracing paper, and my Rotring, so

having to redraw this was kind of a pain.

(laughs)"

Nevertheless, there have been cases where this gesture remained intact internationally,

such as in the intro of Mischief Makers as seen here.

Or in Persona 4 as Kanji's victory.

And perhaps most prolifically by Dan in Street Fighter IV.

While it's unknown why these instances weren't changed, they could have possibly been left

untouched to preserve the cultural spirit of the original games, especially in the case

of Persona 4 which is set and heavily steeped in Japanese culture.

Then again, they could have just as easily slipped by the localizers unaware to the gesture's

dual nature, which isn't nearly as widely known in the United States of America.

However, this is not an unusual phenomenon as there exist many gestures that have radically

different meanings in differing parts of the world.

For example, the coalition forces in Iraq have had to use caution giving others a thumbs

up, as the gesture essentially translates to, "up yours!"in traditional Iraqi culture.

Likewise, in an article for a popular Vietnamese newspaper entitled "Vietnamese Body Language

and What it Means," author Angela Schonberg writes,

"One time I told one of my Vietnamese friends to 'wish me luck' as I had to cross downtown

during rush hour.

Subconsciously, I simultaneously, crossed my fingers when saying this.

My friend stopped me and asked, 'Why did you cross your fingers?'

I explained to her that in America crossing your fingers is a sign of good luck.

We sometimes even cross our fingers for luck when we're waiting for good news or the

results of a test."

"After repeating this to her, she laughed and continued to explain to me that in Vietnam,

this is not the case.

She told me that crossing your fingers is considered a rude, and disrespectful gesture

that refers to part of the female anatomy."

Meanwhile in the UK giving someone a two fingered V-sign with your palm faced inwards actually

means the same as sticking just your middle finger up - with both gestures being commonly

used.

However, elsewhere this gesture is practically synonymous with either the peace sign, the

"V for Victory" sign, or even just the number 2.This infamously caused a misunderstanding

in 1992 during the then US President George Bush Sr.'s visit to Australia where he flashed

what he intended to be backhand victory signs to passing crowds from his limousine.

Back in the world of video games, this difference of interpretations caused Valve to flip the

zombie hand on the cover of Left 4 Dead 2 in the UK to avoid any similar misconceptions.

It's not just gestures that can be interpreted differently in other parts of the world either.

For instance, while the majority of PlayStation games released in the west use the "X"

button on the controller to confirm and the "O" button to cancel, the opposite is

true in Japan.

This is because in Japan circles represent "marujirushi," a symbol used as an affirmation

or to say yes.

On the flip side, Xs serve to as a denial or a way to say no.

Meanwhile, games such as Crash Bandicoot have had their art altered to give characters five

fingers instead of four upon being released in Japan.

As we've covered in a previous video, this is done to avoid cultural taboo connotations

with the historically outcasted social class of "Burakumin," which included butchers

and slaughterhouse laborers among whom missing fingers caused by work related accidents were

not uncommon.

As well as with the ritual known as "Yubitsume," in which a member will amputate their own

finger as a means of punishment or as a serious apology, most notably committed among the

yakuza, a major Japanese crime syndicate.

However, these are but a handful of examples amid many more from across the globe.

Suffice to say, just as each culture has its own language, they can also have their own

gestures, whose meanings can vastly differ across the globe.

Have you noticed any other examples of this gesture in video games?

Know of any other gestures that can have wildly different meanings depending on where you

are from?

Let us know in the comment below and until next time, thanks for watching!

Critiquing Kyle Beats' Youtube Channel - Graphic Design Advice #1 - Duration: 13:51.

put me a bag of frozen peas because it's too hot and this is how I solve a

problem what's going on guys my name is Coles Zarick welcome to the channel and

this is the show where we go in and critique the brand the visuals all the

design and a producer is a YouTube channel just try to help out give any

type of tips or feedback that we can that might give anybody some value today

we're doing Kyle beats my name is Cole Zarick I'm a musician

slash producer but full-time I'm a graphic designer and I would say that

branding is my favorite and my focal point when it comes to graphic design if

you want me to do this for your channel or somebody in particular just leave a

comment in this video or tweet me at Cole Zarick okay so how we're gonna

start this is from the perspective of somebody who's never been to Kyle's

channel before so let's go to a brand new homepage and type in Kyle Beats I'm

gonna find out how many letters it actually takes for Kyle Beats to

actually show up the purple one is mine so don't worry about that Kyle Beats

radio okay interesting that Kyle Beats radio pops up before Kyle Beats is

actual Channel and this has only under 4000 subscribers rather than his channel

being a hundred thousand so I'd say that's a little wonky a little weird

kind of hard for people to find you but it's okay it's whatever alright here we

are Kyle beets the first thing we notice is

his profile picture me personally I do not like this I do appreciate the high

contrast you can tell that it's a person they're wearing a hat but there's no

personality there's no expression there's no color you can't even see his

face this is the only context that you're gonna see his profile picture

this big most likely you're gonna see it on the left here and it's gonna be

extremely small and it's gonna give off even less personality than this image

right here so next let's just click on this channel let's check out what we

have here all right nice nice all right so I gotta

say that's pretty hight 15 seconds to get somebody interested in your content

I like the trailer a lot I like to be in the very beginning it's not a video that

I instantly wanted to shut off and move on and look at your content on my terms

this is a good job of you giving me a taste of what you're about on your terms

gets me interested and you know maybe I'll subscribe we'll see at the end of

the video if he earns a subscribe from me all right Kyle let's take a look at

your banner new videos almost every day subscribe to never miss an upload ok

once again no color the ocean I would like to know what the ocean has to do

it's just kind of random how do you take it the color of the ocean like I feel

like this would be so much prettier if I could actually see the blue actually

making me mad that you made it black and white why not like a photo of your setup

or anything else this is the best opportunity for your brand to stand out

and I think you can do so much more with it you know I feel like I'm getting

ahead of myself a little bit let's just talk first and foremost about his logo

and his name Kyle beats Kyle beats sounded like you came up with it when

you were a lot younger and then you just happen to get this successful and now

you have like a logo and you have Mertz you have a hat with your logo on it you

may as well be like Kevin beets or Stephen beets I don't know I just I

think you're growing you just hit a hundred thousand subscribers maybe it's

time to think about changing your name a lot of producers talk about like yo hit

subscribe join the movement check out the merch this and that and

when I hear Kyle beats it's not something that I get really excited to

be a part of if that's what you want people to feel like when they're

subscribing to you when they're coming back and watching videos they want to be

a part of a community of people and like the Kyle crew or if you ever like Gabe

slate gave the subscribers like a name like it would be super cringe and I

don't think it would go over very smoothly

content creators put all their focus into their content like your beats or

your videos or your cinematography calls cinematography is incredible it feels

like you're gonna watch like a huge tech video when he pans into his setup with

the RGB light setup it's super impressive but while you're focusing on

cinematography and your camera and your lighting and your content your beats

everything else gets left by the wayside and I would say that stuff is just as

even more important wouldn't you agree that a thumbnail could be the reason

somebody clicks on your video well it's the same thing when it comes to your

channel and your brand people are gonna want to stay when they see something

when you put something in front of them that's fantastic

oh my gosh this is getting a hot got me a lapsed and there we go all right Kyle

let's talk about your logo hold on let me pull up let me pull up illustrator

right now all right let's just open up illustrator and let's type in KB are you

serious Kyle the default font that illustrator just gave me is your fun

oh my god Paul are you serious it's the same font look at the B it's

the same exact B here I'll make his logo right now

and flip and flip yay Kyle beats is logo but that took me

literally less than 20 seconds this is what I'm talking about when everything

falls by the wayside like it's a default font you could have maybe even brought

it even a little bolder we got myriad Pro look myriad Pro even has like

different weights that you can use like I would say this one is even more

interesting than this right here this is this is the font you use to type a paper

this is the font you use when you're searching something on Google like this

is some default font stuff like you could have gotten so much more

interesting this KB is already more interesting this KB is already more

interesting like play with the thickness play with the font choices alright I'll

put my money where my mouth is this is why I don't like the font because curves

like this this curve right here this curve right here we're not messing with

real like right angles if you can tell the thickness of this is a lot thicker

than the thickness of this and then it kind of gets thicker I would describe

this font as a paragraph font it's easily legible in paragraphs but on its

own it's not very attractive like what if the B was turntables like records or

vinyls or I don't know like Kyle beats

like what if you did something more ambiguous like this like it's the K and

the B together but I'm just simplifying I'm not just taking the default K and B

and then flipping the K the K and the B look like they're gonna start their own

buddy cop comedy or Charlie's Angels like they're just both like yeah what's

up be like we're gonna make some beats aren't we yeah what's up K hey you look

kind of weird today oh it's cool man I'm flipped horizontally so it's like kind

of symmetrical oh yeah I get it cool man

no that's all I'm saying let's move on to something else all right so we looked

at his logo his name his banner let's take a moment and check out some of his

thumbnails his intros outros website sample packs drum kits all the branding

that has to do with that I think the outro screen is fine I would just think

maybe add sections for more content like maybe you can have two videos stacked up

against each other and then subscribe and then maybe like a link to your

patreon or if you have one I'll refer the comments for the outro screen the

same comments that I had about the YouTube banner alright let's talk about

thumbnails I think the arrow even the arrow itself

that's an opportunity to have it be your arrow it could be your brand like choose

a color for it keep it consistent throughout all your thumbnails make the

arrow look interesting and different like own the arrow find it arrow that's

unique and use that alright your thumbnails are a little inconsistent

they're kind of all over the place some of them have brackets and bars some of

them have like here you have like drop shadow but then here you don't have a

drop shadow so this is a lot more legible for people when it's smaller I

don't know why you choose to have your text so damn small and center like

that's your brand like it's so hard to read and it's so uninteresting like this

one is super dark it has an arrow but like this thumbnail like you have an

expressive facial expression you have big thick text you have like I love the

thumbnail that you did for this but then these other ones even if you maybe took

this white bar and used it on these videos because it's hard to read all

right let's take a look down the channel I wouldn't put my uploads on the very

very highest just because for newcomers you want to display like series like

you're making a beat series like that's really good I like that this is vertical

and this this playlist is horizontal it just creates some more variety but I

would bump up your production newest beats all these players I would bump up

and throw the uploads down lower cuz they're less priority what is

guys welcome to the video so welcome back to another video my name is Kyle

b2b so you do this thing where you say hey welcome to the video and he's like

hey welcome back to another video what's up guys welcome to the video so like why

do you have that cut there hey guys welcome to the video ok so

welcome to the video I know that's like that was a mistake there that's two

different takes on the same intro but I just gonna call you out on it it's a

super rare thing but I figured it was notable to mention just just kind of

critique your editing so YouTube does this thing on his mobile where on the

very top of your channel the bar for the menu and the playlists and videos and

stuff will change according to your YouTube banner cover art so his is gray

and for example if you go into my cover art mine will be that super bright

yellow toned down just a little bit this is how much of a missed opportunity it

is alright website we won't get too in-depth but whoa

holy crap let go pretty why don't you have this look how nice these are look

how colorful look at this karma drum kit yo this karma drum kit is actually sick

looking like this makes me want to just check it out I just want to click on

this and check out like Kyle how do you have like the most beautiful drum kits

and then we go onto your YouTube channel and then it's just like apply the same

thing you're doing to come up with the visuals for your drum kits and use it on

your channel and then have the brand that's on your channel inform the

visuals that you choose to make your drum kits like you could have your brand

like different colors represent different moods so that when people go

on to your drum kits they see like a cool blue and no it's gonna be some

chill like boom bap vibe and then you have like karma or this this yeah karma

drum kit and it can be like some hard-hitting trap superbright like that

duotone use colors to influence like the moods that you're trying to convey

iceberg melody loop kit like that kind of paint a picture of the type of

melodies that are gonna be in that pack they're gonna be like cool they're gonna

be smooth they're gonna be soothing they're

gonna be like chipper and happy or dark and soul them these are all the things

that you could convey indirectly to your audience to your fans to the people that

are going to your website and buying these drum kits all right guys we

checked out his whole channel is his name logo banner thumbnails visuals drum

kits website it's time to get the final verdict

yeah I'll subscribe I'm not hitting you with that Bell though I'm gonna I'm just

gonna kind of ease my way in I think what sets you apart is your

cinematography your beats are great yeah just involve more color get a little bit

more crazy I don't know why you have your face as your logo icon for YouTube

and not your KB but yeah that's all I have to say about Kyle beats if you guys

enjoyed this video leave a like on it subscribe let me know who else I should

critique and in the comments or tweet at me at Cole's Eric I appreciate you guys

watching and I'll see you the next episode peace

Scotty M. Thoughts #104 - Schools, And Speeches - Duration: 1:53.

what's up guys welcome to Scotty m. thoughts today I'm in my car again

cause well it's rainy and it's windy outside and trying to record on a phone

and that microphone it just wouldn't work out

I love recording outside just weather is shitty anyways what I want to talk about

today is that in Nova Scotia a valedictorian got her speech well part

of her speech cut off and was only told ten minutes before her speech actually

started so the valedictorian was going to talk about a student who died by

suicide but apparently ten minutes before her speech actually started a

teacher came up to her and told her that that part of the speech was cut out and

that the principal told her to tell her that and thats gonna throw somebody

off their speech hugely and what is with schools stopping students from talking

about these topics like I talked about the one in California who got was going

to talk about sexual assault but then her speech got cut off or mic actually

got cut off halfway through her speech like what is with school stopping these

students from bringing up these topics that are obviously important to them and

probably important to a lot of the classmates I don't know maybe there's a

right place in time to talk about that kind of stuff what are your thoughts on

this do you think she should have been able to talk about the suicide do you

have any other topics you want me to cover or any questions you want me to answer I love it though comment below if you like this video hit that

Developer Update | Torbjorn Balance Updates | Overwatch - Duration: 2:23.

What's up everyone, this is Jeff, here with another developer update

to tell you about something super awesome which is big changes

coming for Torbjorn.

The community's hatred of him is at an all time high.

It's a little bit devastating right now.

For those of you Torbjorn mains out there, and I know you exist,

panic.

So, one of the problems we see with Torb right now is there's a weird behaviour that's

encouraged by the core, fundamental design of the hero,

which is that there are people who might actually play him.

There's a couple things that we really don't like about this.

One, we think it's wrong.

The other thing is, so, I'm going to back way up to the Developer Crisis,

which is when the Overwatch Team fought back against me.

During that Crisis, Torbjorn was specifically designed to frustrate me.

So this update is to sort of preserve the integrity of my leadership.

The first change that I'll let you know about,

and it's gonna seem a little bit shocking at first,

is that his ultimate no longer exists.

Now, Overwatch in a lot a ways has heroes who are defined by their ultimate abilites,

and we felt like we really had to come up with something special for Torbjorn players

so that they felt like their new ultimate was really worthy of the hero that they've

come to love and respect so much.

Um, his first new ability is that he can fly.

I'm sorry, that was just me being silly.

He can jump, but only into a wall, so you're really trying to never use it.

His second ability is that he can scream in fear before he's just taken out.

It's pretty disheartening.

I think the screaming really opens up those moments where he's getting attacked,

his teammates aren't really helping him, he needs a-a chance to get away, and really just sort of

drive that point home.

If there are gameplay issues and it's not working correctly I hope we've proved that

we will not go back, so stop asking.

Let us know what you think of these changes, guys, and have fun with 'em.

We'll check in next time. Bye.
