'He's participating in a pigeon contest'
... look, he's off!
Hello pigeon, I'm going to set you free!
How wonderful!
When entering, I just have to look around,
and to become conscious of what I sense.
Looking beyond the tangible
and visible reality.
This place is a treasure-house of symbols,
and of course, here in this chapel
the symbolic language is inspired
by the Christian faith.
Beneath the first layer, the first visible layer,
there are deeper layers to be found.
Universal layers.
Arriving at those layers... it's like peeling
an onion: if you can look through
the different layers of images,
then you arrive at the essence of
a story: a different reality
is being unveiled.
That different reality is the source of
the healing and the healing force of
these places of power,
these places of prayer.
That's the thing which makes a place
into a place of reflection.
Considering, reflecting, mirroring,
essentially looking at what I notice
outside of me and understanding
that the meaning of what I see
tells me also something about myself.
What exactly? What does it tell
about my life?
And about the life of human beings
in general?
As a matter of fact, when I enter
this place
- and that's why I love this chapel-
I notice a row of lights, those lights
are being lit by human beings,
I never entered this chapel without
a candle burning. There's always
a lit candle, a living light.
It's the flame of the candle, the living
light, brought in this place
by human beings.
What's more: at one hand-side I notice
the holy Mary, and at the other hand-side
the figure of Jesus.
When I look at the statue of Jesus,
I notice he is showing his heart:
it's a heart surrounded
by a thorn crown. A wounded heart that
suffers. He shows this heart
with his arms wide open:
in a very open way, in a gesture of surrender.
It's that wounded heart that people
bring here in this chapel.
What do I read above the statue of Jesus:
during stormy periods in life, look at the
stars, at the light in the darkness,
and call for the holy Mary.
The feminine energy or power.
People come here when life does not
work out as they would like or hope.
On occasions of darkness, when in
search of answers, in search of healing,
of relief of pain, at moments of suffering,
of mourning, when they are afraid.
At those moments people come to
this place.
It's through feeling this pain and the woe
of the wounded heart that something
very special happens: the heart opens up.
When a suffering heart opens up
then it becomes a receptive heart.
Look, when I arrive here with a
firmly closed heart, like a sealed-off vault,
nothing will happen.
Then nothing can leave the heart,
nothing can enter the heart.
That's the scared heart.
By opening my heart, which happens
automatically when I have the courage
to feel the pain, and by entering
the silence of this place,
I feel a kind of permission.
It's a place where the showing of
that suffering is licensed.
Here no one will question you
when you are in tears or
when you're sitting in silence
with your eyes closed.
Being silent, in the stillness
of the moment.
Even when there are 10 other
persons present at the chapel,
all is well, it's permitted.
People don't do that
while attending a bus or
in a full packed train, or
in a supermarket, or in a pub
or restaurant.
You can do that in those places
as well, but then it feels
improper and unsafe.
Here at this chapel it's ok to do so.
This is a place which embraces you,
and soothes you, and which envelops
you with a respectful silence.
Here you can enter with your
wounded heart.
And what do I notice at the
other hand-side?
Here the church put a statue of
the holy Mary.
You could call this the divine feminine.
She shows her heart as well, but
in a very different way: her heart is
a flowering rose.
The divine feminine shows her heart with
the symbol of the all-encompassing
and unconditional love:
the flowering rose, or the mystical rose,
in which the earth and the divine meet.
What's more: there's a plaque above
the statue:
I read : 'happy are those who call upon
the divine Mother'.
The archetype of the Mother is
the feminine which unifies
with the masculine.
Knowing her opens up the road to
the eternal life.
The eternal life. Is the key
to be found in here?
Maybe... my story about how I discover that
would take too long for now.
In the next video we explore this
further on.
You're very welcome to post
your comments and suggestions.
I hope to continue
unveiling the magic of this place
together with you, in the next video.
That's a finch!
