Moving forward, we are going to talk about our 3rd personality Aruna Asaf Ali, who was also awarded Bharat Ratna.
Come let us know who she was and why she was awarded with the Bharat Ratna.
Who was Aruna Asaf Ali?
Aruna Asaf Ali was born Aruna Ganguly on 16 July 1909 in Kalka, Punjab which is now in Haryana.
She was an Indian Independence activist.
Aruna finished her schooling from Sacred Heart Convent in Lahore
and then at All Saints' College in Nainital.
After graduation, she worked as a teacher at Gokhale Memorial School in Calcutta.
In 1928, she married Asaf Ali, who was a Congress party leader
Later, she became an active member of Indian National Congress Party after marrying Asaf Ali.

She participated in Public Processions during the Salt Satyagraha.
In 1932, she was held prisoner at the Tihar Jail
where she protested the indifferent treatment of political prisoners by launching a hunger strike.
On 8 August 1942,
The All India Congress Committee passed the Quit India Movement at the Bombay Session.
She is widely remembered for hoisting the Indian National Congress flag
at the Gowalia Tank Maidan in Mumbai during the Quit India Movement
Aruna was dubbed the "Heroine of the Movement" for her bravery.
In 1942, an arrest warrant was issued in her name
she went underground to evade the arrest and started an underground movement
The government announced a reward of 5,000 rupees for her capture.
Mahatma Gandhi sent her a hand-written note suggesting to surrender herself.
However, she came out of hiding only after the warrant against her was withdrawn in 1946.

Post Indian Independence in 1947, she remained active in politics
In 1948, she joined a new party - Socialist Party.
In 1950, she joined the Communist Party of India.
In 1958, she became Delhi's first Mayor
She and Narayanan started Link Publishing House.
In 1964, she re-joined the Congress Party
but stopped taking part in active politics.
Her Awards
Aruna Asaf Ali was awarded 'International Lenin Peace Prize' for the year 1964.
She won the 'Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding' in 1991.
She was given the second highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan in the year 1992.
The great Freedom Fighter passed away in New Delhi on 29 July 1996, aged 87.
She was given the highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna in 1997.
In 1998, a stamp commemorating her was issued.
