LOOM KNITTING Mermaid Doll Pattern - Duration: 48:38.
This time I'm going to show you how to loom knit a mermaid. For a list of
supplies see the description below or visit the website.
Hey it's Denise from Loomahat.com and I want to give a special thanks to Carol
Maple from PromiseLearningATL.com and Laura Kopaczewski for covering the cost
of closed captioning. Let's begin with a drawstring cast on of 24 pegs.
We're going to be knitting with one strand of worsted weight yarn and I'm
going to use a simple knot to secure that working yarn to the anchor peg. And,
then you're going to take it between the first and last peg, bring it back forward
again and we're going to zig-zag between every other peg. So you're coming in
front of one peg, behind the next, in front, behind and you're going to go all
the way around, until you're back at the front of the loom. You're gonna go behind
peg one, bring the yarn forward and you're going to lay it between a few
pegs,you know for five. Don't let it go like I just did, hold it with your fingers,
like this. And then you're going to knit off every peg that has two loops and if
you notice that's gonna be every other peg.
After you knit off peg 24 you are done with your cast on and you're ready for
Row 1. So, here is peg number 24 and next to it, of course is peg 1 which doesn't
have two loops, so you're going to take the working yarn and you're going to lay
it between peg 1 and peg 2 and you see peg one only has one loop and here peg 2
has 2. So you knit off peg 2 and then you're going to continue using the U
wrap version of the knit stitch to knit the rest of the pegs. So you half wrap
and knit off and you half wrap and knit off. Keep going.
All right for rows 2 to 9, you're just gonna knit all 24 pegs.
Keep knitting.
After a few rows remove the knot from the anchor pegs. Once
you're done with row 9 and we're ready for 10 things are going to change. We're
going to start knitting flat. So normally you would go from here to here but since
you're going to knit flat, which means back and forth instead of in the round
we're going to turn around and go in the opposite direction.
Still using the Uwrap version of the knit stitch. Go ahead and knit your 24
pegs and when you're done with that and you're back at peg 1 , Decreases ! Yeah, it's
really not that serious. So for row 11 you're going to knit 2, decrease by 1
and knit 22. And let me show you how you're gonna do that. So I begin by
knitting the first 2 stitches. So I'm going to knit pegs one, right here and
peg two, I knit off and then I take the loop from peg two over to peg one. I
tighten that loop, I knit off and then move it over to peg
2. Now that peg does not have a stitch anymore and I'm going to continue to
knit my row, just as I've been doing. I'm going to use the Uwrap version of the
knit stitch. Do I continue to knit because I'm knitting in the round and
this peg is the one that no longer has a stitch. That was peg 1 and I'm going to
keep knitting all the way around the loom. Then for row 12, I'm going to do
the same thing. So I'm on peg 24, I turn around because we're knitting flat and
I'm going to knit off 24 and peg 23. I move the loop from peg 23 over
24, tight it, knit off and move the loop over to 23. Now I have two pegs
that don't have stitches and I continue to knit all the way around. Now I'm on
row 13 and I'm going to do the same thing. I'm going to knit the first two
stitches and decrease by one and now I'm going to continue knitting my row all
the way around the loom, until I get to this peg, right here. Now three of them
don't have stitches, right? For row 14 we're going to do the same thing. We're
going to knit off those first two pegs move the loop over knit off and move the
loop back. And now you have four pegs that don't have stitches and 20 that do.
And what we're going to do now for the remaining rows, which will be rows 15
through 20 is that we're only going to knit. You're not gonna do any decreases.
You're going to be knitting 20 pegs for 6 rows and then you're ready for a row
21. On this row you're going to decrease by one again. So you're knitting off
those first two pegs and decreasing by one and you're going to knit all the
rest of your pegs. All the way around until your back at the front of the loom.
And for row 22, surprise, surprise, you're going to decrease by one. You're doing
the same thing. You must be an expert by now, I'm sure, right? But just in case, I want
to show you. We don't want to take any chances. You decreased by one and now you
see, you have less pegs with stitches. And you're going to knit all the way around,
until you get back to the front of the loom and you're on row 23 and we're not going
to decrease here. So rows 23 through 27 you're just going to knit your stitches
and no decreases. Until... it's time to change your color. Okay so, you're still
not decreasing but we are going to change the color, to the color we're
going to use for the tail. So cut your working yarn, bring the color that you
want for your tail. And I wrap my two colored yarns and then I make a knot. And
you want to try to make this knot as close to your peg as possible, so you can
push it down and then just for good measure. personally I go ahead and I do a
second knot. And now I'm going to start knitting rows 28 through 32. I'm knitting
18 pegs, if you don't have 18 pegs with stitches, don't worry about it it's not
that kind of pattern. This isn't a sweater and exact numbers don't have to
be. We don't have to be on the same side of the yarn. Just do as close as possible
and just keep knitting. And once you are done with those you are ready for row 33.
And this is optional, you can add floss to your pattern. I like to do that
because it gives me that look, like I have scales, by adding a burst of color
and I do that with floss. You don't need to do this but I'm gonna add floss. I'm
also going to add some glitter with some thread. I take the two new strands, the
floss and the thread and I fold them just like I did when I was changing
colors. And then I'm going to create a knot and just like before, I'm gonna push
this knot down, because I want it to be as close to the peg as I possibly can
manage to get it. And then I grab all three strands, as if they were one and I
start knitting. I'm going to use the Uwrap version of the knit stitch just like
I did before. What you will find that is cool about this,
as you continue to knit, you will see that sometimes the white is on the top
and sometimes it ends up on the bottom, here and here. Alright so once you're
done with these you're ready to move on to the next step and that is rows 38
through 42. Again, we're going to do the decreases by knitting 2 and then
decreasing 1 and knitting the row. It should take you down to only thirteen
pegs with stitches. But again if it doesn't, if you have more or less don't
panic, just keep knitting. Aome of you might have noticed that I have locking
stitch markers on the inside of my work. It's just helping me keep count. So every
10 rows, I add a stitch marker and then I don't have to count those rows when I'm
trying to confirm how many rows I knit.
When you're done knitting those 5 rows with their decreases you are now
on row 43 and these three rows you're just going to knit, no decreases just
knit those three rows.
Once you're done with those rows, you should be on row 46. Now, rows 46 to 54
you're going to again decrease by 1 peg on every row. When you're done you'll
be on row 55 and I have 4 pegs left. If you don't, don't panic. Whatever number
of pegs you have left, we're going to knit a row , in my case four pegs. So I'm
going to knit my four pegs and then I'm ready to cast off. So I'm going to take
the working yarn and I'm going to stretch out about five pegs, five or six
pegs. And I'm going to cut and now with my hook I'm going to scoop up that
working yarn through every peg because I'm going to do a drawstring cast off or
gathered method, whatever you want to call it. And then I take those loops off
the pegs and my work is now free of the loom and very important you need to
stretch your stitches. So all that means is to take the fabric and stretch it
because otherwise, you'll have the wrong size and your fabric will look really,
really funky. Alright I wanted a close-up of those little scales that I made with
the floss because I think it's so cool. It's time to make the fin and we're
going to cast on 11 pegs but unlike last time, this time we're going to work
flat. So go ahead and secure your yarn to the anchor peg. I'm making a regular knot
and I'm going to zig-zag, until I have 11 pegs and then I'm going to take
that working yarn and lay it flat like I did before and I'm going to knit off
every peg that has two loops. Again line, you know, peg one is weird. So for row one,
we're going to slip it and then we're going to knit nine pegs
and the last peg we're going to knit three times.
So there's your peg one,
you're gonna wrap it and go to peg two and knit off. Then you're going to knit
those next pegs and when you get to the very last one, which looks a little funky
on row one, no biggie, you are going to knit that particular
peg three times. And on this, for this piece, you will always knit that last peg
three times, Then you're going to go now row 4, I'm sorry 2 to 4 and
you're always going to slip that first one, knit the rest of the pegs, which in
this case are going to be 9 pegs and again when you reach the end of your row
you're going to take that one peg and you're going to knit that peg three
times. All right so keep knitting rows 2, 3 and 4 the same way.
Before starting on the next part of this piece, I want to give you a quick summary
of the steps, just to make it easier. So this is the middle peg, since we have 11
there is a middle peg. We're gonna go from this peg 1 and knit an additional
4, go back then knit 3, go back knit two, go back need one, go back. Then
we're going to knit all the way back to the other side and we're gonna do the
same thing. Knit four, go back and knit three, go back knit two, go back and knit
one, go back and then go all the way back to the front and then you'll be done. All
right so let's start. Here it is in writing so that you have another way of
knowing what we're gonna do. I'll give you a minute to read it. Always remember
that you have the power to pause. All right so let's start. We're gonna get the
working yarn and we're going to knit. You're slipping the first peg and you're
going to knit four, right here's three and here's four. Now you're going to turn
around. This is the middle, you're not going to knit that one. you're gonna turn
around and those four pegs that you just finished knitting you're going to knit
them again. And remember that here, the last peg, which is your fifth peg in this
row, you're going to knit three times because the last peg you always knit
three times. So here's my third one and now I'm going to knit back again. This
time I'm only going to knit three pegs. So one peg, two and here's my last one
which is three. And now I'm going to turn around and those three pegs that I just
knit, I'm gonna knit them again. So one, two, three and now my last peg, I know, you
know, what we're doing. We're going to knit three times. So there's two and
here's three. All righty, now going to go back, except this time we're
only going to knit two pegs. So one, two, go back, one, two and knit the last one three
times. And this time we're only going to do one. So one, knit it again, go back, knit
your peg three times and we're going to turn around now we're going to knit all
of the next pegs, all of them all of them, all the way till you get to the edge. If
you're counting my pegs, you'll see that I have an extra one. I did go back and
fix it, so don't count my pegs on this clip. You'll see them on the next. All
right, your now on the other side and so rows 14 through 22 you're gonna
repeat the same thing. You're going to do exactly what you just did, right? From the
other end you're going to knit four, you're gonna turn around and knit those
four pegs again, get to peg five and knit it three times.
And then you're just gonna continue because you know the next steps and if
you're not sure you can go back and take a look at what we did before because
we're doing the same thing just on the other side.
And when you finish that, we're ready to cast off.
So take the working yarn and lay it over all of your pegs, including an extra few,
four or five of the. Cut the working yarn and just like before we're going to
scoop that yarn and threaded up through each peg. Now I'm using the hook here. I
actually prefer to use a needle but well, economy of tools. Then take them off the,
take the loops off the peg, stretch your stitches. This one might feel a little
odd compared to the other one and you'll see that your fin takes shape. You're
going to then pull on those threads because you need to neaten things up.
Pull on the string but make sure not to create a tube. You're just straightening
out your stitches. These are the cast on stitches and the cast off stitch and
just pull it and you see that it takes shape. If you pull too hard you're gonna
get a tube, it's going to completely just roll up and it into a tube, so be careful.
This one up here at the top, you just want to create like a circle but not a
tube. Snap your finger and your needle will be threaded already with your yarn,
the working yarn. You're gonna take it and you're gonna feed it through those
top loops. You want to then pull on that until it creates a circle and you want
to close it up nicely, there you go, that's done. So now you take that same
needle, you're gonna thread the bottom part of your fin and you're gonna go
ahead and feed it through the back side now, not the front side, the back side.
Take it and those loops that you see right there, you're feeding your working
yarn through those loops to the other end and don't close it, you're just
feeding them through to secure them and then weave in your ends, make a knot,
weave up. I always weave in the opposite direction and then I cut. All right now
your fin is done and if you want a more textured fin like in these sleeping
mermaids you're going to use a rip stitch instead of just a basic stitch.
All right now let's make the arms. You need to make two of them. You're going to
cast on five pegs and you're gonna knit 16 rows. So you secure your yarn to your
anchor peg, cast on five pegs using the drawstring cast on. You guys are now
experts, I'm sure. And you're going to knit those 16 rows, so just keep knitting
and once you've done your 16 rows you will be ready to do your cast off and
again we're using the same cast off which is that drawstring cast off. So
you're going to, once you've done all your five pegs and your sixteen rows,
then you're going to take that working yarn and you're going to stretch it out
about eight nine pegs, cut and with your hook, you're going to feed those that
working yarn through all five of those loops that are on your peg and then
you're going to, with the hook ,take those loops off, take the fabric and you're
going to stretch out your stitches. This time, you do want to create a tube and
then pull on them until it's completely a tube. And what will happen is that the
ugly parts of the fabric will basically roll in. Then take your working yarn and
feed it through those loops and now we're going to sew it up. And you want to
go from side to side and then go up. You go up, to the side, up and over. You don't
want to do like a whip stitch. You want to go up and over, up to the next stitch and over.
And don't pull on it all right. And then it's gonna look
like this. Leave 1/3 of it undone so it's flat. Now you're ready for the bra.
You going to again cast on five pegs but this time you're only going to knit 12 rows.
Now I did 12 and if you want to do less, that's probably okay. If you don't
want the arms to fall right under the bra, then you might be better off with 10
rows instead of 12. I kind of like mine my bra to continue. Once you do your rows,
again you are going to take the working yarn and feed it through, after you cut
it of course. Feed it through the five pegs.
You've already basically done the same thing when you did the arms. Once
you're done, you're going to take the loops off the peg, but unlike the arm
that you pulled into a tube, you're going to stretch these stitches and then
you're gonna pull the yarn but you're not going to create a tube. You just want
to neaten up the edges, right. Then you're going to go ahead and get a
needle, thread your needle and you're gonna feed the yarn through those loops,
as such. Just like this. It's just a cleanup job. You want to make sure you
don't make a tube out of this fabric. You're just wanting the fabric to kind
of turn into like an oval shape. Then you can clean it up a little more and
you'll see then that you have on each end....
pinch the middle and then get, you can either get yarn, I'm getting floss so
that it matches the little scales that I created. So the same white floss that I
used for this, for the scales, that's what I'm using to create the middle. So I
pinched it in the middle and now I'm going to wrap my floss two
times and then I'm gonna make a knot and I'm gonna make a nice tight knot so that
it creates the shape that I wan. There you go.
And I'm going to make a second knot because that's what I do
when I make a knot. I go back and I make a second one. Then cut the excess floss
and your bra is done and you're ready now to make the skirt. This time you're
gonna cast on 19 pegs but you're only gonna knit five rows. So again, same old,
same old, you're gonna secure your yarn and then
count out your pegs. And you're doing the drawstring cast on, so it's 19 pegs.
You're gonna turn around and you're gonna knit off all of the pegs with two
loops. You know this, right, nice and easy. Knit off those pegs all the way back to
the front and then you're gonna just knit those five rows only if you want to
make your little skirt a little longer or a little shorter than mine then you
can adjust the number of rows. You can go, you know, to seven or eight rows instead
or you could do it shorter. And then you're gonna cast off and the cast off
is just like you've been doing all along. So you measure out a few more than the
ones that you did. And here, I wanted to show you how to do this with a needle
only because I think it's way better. But not everybody has a metal needle and
this works better with a metal needle. It's the same cast off it goes much
quicker and much easier than when I use a hook, see. So just wanted to show off a
little and show you that the needle is a lot easier to do that cast off than the
hook. And then of course we're going to stretch out
these stitches, just like we did before. And pull on those loose loops to clean
things up. And remember, you don't want to create a tube, you just want to clean out
those stitches, right, so that your skirt is ready for your doll. And after you've
done that skirt, all right, your parts are going to be basically done and you will
be ready to assemble your doll. Let's just make sure that you have the right
number of parts. So you should have six parts. This one is the head/ torso and
tail, two hands, a bra. I'm sorry two arms, a bra, a skirt and a tail. All right let's
start by cleaning up the top portion which is your head. I'm gonna pull on
those stitches and close it up, all right , just like you would close up a hat.
You're gonna close up this top, same way. Close that little circle as much as you
can and then put your working yarn on a needle and you're going to take that
working yarn and you're going to feed it through all of the loops that are on the
top because you want to close this up really good. You don't want any opening,
of any kind. So pull it all the way up and you know, pull on that string until
you've made sure that your circle is closed and then you can take it to the
other side and just weave it in. Don't worry about it, nothing's going to show.
Remember you're gonna put hair on this doll so no panic, you just want it closed
because you don't want the stuffing to come out.
Then feed the needle up until it's at the part of the fabric where you started
knitting flat and now you have two sides. And you're going to take your needle
over and then upward, over and then upward. And you're bringing two, two
stitches, one from each side, a row to make it look good and basically roll the
yucky part of the fabric inward so that you can keep sewing down, until you have
sewed all of this skin tone color, until you sew all of it and then you're ready
to start stuffing. And you're going to stuff this doll lightly. You don't want
her to get a really big head and be disproportionate, excessively. And shape
your doll as you stuff.
And then you need to get a strand that matches the color
of the top portion of your doll, right. Once you shape and you figure out where
you want it and then just tie it. It should be about, I would say, two-thirds
of the part that is skin tone and then just tie your strand really, really, tight
and then take a needle and you're gonna feed these strands to weave them in
you're gonna feed them through the head and up the top. And you'll see that it
just basically disappears through the same with both of them. And if you want
you can add more, if you want more definition around the neck which I did.
Later on I added another strand. And then basically finish off right here. Finish
knitting and sewing it and then just hide that strand as well. Just make sure
that you do it nicely and that you don't go over several rolls like I did there
and had to pull it back out. And then again, pull it back in cut, off the excess
and then you need a string and the color of
the hips and tail. And again, I put very little stuffing in there. Once I get my
thread that matches that color, I make a knot to secure it in and then I start
sewing again. And like I said, you, you want to sew this really nicely even
though, I'll tell you what, the hair hides like any imperfections you have in the
back. They're gonna get hidden but you really do want to make this nicely. You
might decide to put a pony tail instead of long hair, so making it nice and neat
is much better. You see that I go from one side, I go up and then over. So it's
really important to do that. You first go up and then you go over, because that's
gonna hide your string, you don't want to do like a whip stitch because that's not
gonna look good on this. And as you can see, it's working out nicely and the
yucky part of the fabric stays inside and it's not perfectly hidden but I
think I did pretty good. Alright and you're gonna go all the way until you're
down at the bottom and you want to weave in leftover yarn from when you were
doing that tail and now you're going to attach the fin to the bottom part of
your doll and this one can be a little tricky for some people because you do
want to continue to roll those two sides together and at the same time you want
to attach your fin which is wider. So you're going to kind of pinch your fin
to make it fit, like this. And then finish off with the top. So I first narrow my
fin and then I finish attaching because again, I need to bring those two sides in
the back together
like I was doing in the rest of the doll and I'm attaching the fin. So I first
worked the back and then I come to the front and I go through those stitches,
those loops that you see on the end of the doll, I go through those loops and I
run my yarn through on my thread and then just feed them through. So that they
hide and you're gonna do the same thing with the other one because you're gonna
have two of them. So use at this time, actually, to fix any imperfections you
might find on your fin or, or the bottom of the doll.. And there you have most of
it done. Now we need to attach the arms and remember that we left the top flat.
This is new for me. I didn't do this before, but I kind of like it better. I
like the way it looks better when it's flat on the top and I attached it to the
per say, shoulders of the doll and I pin them just so I take a quick look at
them before I make it permanent. Then of course, you need to thread your needle
with the working yarn. And what I'm gonna do is initially I'm going to feed this
one from one side to the other. I'm going to do the same thing and I am per-say
sewing the arms of the doll with the working yarn from the opposite arm and I
feel it's just more secure that way. At the end I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna
make a knot with the two strands of yarn to give it and even more secure. I don't
know, feeling for me, that it is going to stay there. Then I'm going to feed
those up into the head like I did before. And now to put the bra, I just get a
crochet hook and feed it this way. You don't have to do this but I find that
they stay and stays in place much better. That when I didn't do this they would
just like, come up and down and just be all over the place. And this
seems to be a neater option. And then I create a little bow in the back. You can
just cut off the string altogether if you want to. I kind of like having the
bow there. And now it's time to do the skirt. So the first thing I want to do is
take this string from the bottom and feed it through make it a knot and cut
it off because I only need one, I only need the string on the top. And then I've
thread a needle and I attach the two sides to the doll first in the front and
then I go around the doll and again this is something that you don't have to do
but I want to make sure that my skirt is secure and so I'm gonna go completely
around the doll and attach it. I would normally just do like one part in the
front and one part in the back and that's it but I think it's better to
just go completely around the doll and make sure your skirt is not gonna come
off, especially you know some kids are just
more playful than others. For some people, this is not a kid that's getting the
doll it's another adult so you know it's gonna have to be up to you I prefer to
do that. And there you have it. Now we just need to do the face.I put pins
to let me know where I want the eyes and the nose and basically I target one
stitch that has a knot by the way in the back and I'm just gonna take my floss
this is black floss and I'm just gonna wrap that one stitch over and over again
until I have the shape of the eye that I want. Now you can do any eye you want
this was the one that I wanted for this doll. I also made the sleeping mermaids,
which their eyes were different. I have them with
eyes closed and some really long eyelashes. This one I wanted to do
something different and so her eyes are open. And again what I do is just wrap
the I can stitch completely and then I kind of frame it in a circle just to
neaten it up it's not again you could do your eyes any way you want and if this
is too hard for you then maybe the closed eye is easier because it's
basically just a line. And so, I go from one eye and I take my yarn while my
floss directly to the next one so this helps in a couple of ways one I don't
have to come back in and to your work is more secure because you're not bringing
in a whole other one. And so I'm gonna do the same thing. I found a stitch that I'm
gonna work on and I'm just gonna wrap it and wrap it until it forms an eye. And
once I have both my eyes done then I can work on my eyelashes. So I go from that
eye over to the other one and I'm just gonna put three lashes but you can put
as many lashes as you want or none at all. I mean I think it would look a
little funny but it's your doll and you could do whatever you want, right. So I'm
just gonna put three on this side and three on the other and I try to be
pretty consistent but you know stuff happens and it doesn't always turn out
that way. And so I go from one side, again to the other side, where I'm gonna put,
again. three stitches. And they now, they may not match perfectly the other ones
but I do try my best. I actually like them to match and I probably would have
put more on them but you know I don't know I didn't. Ao I just put three on
each side and I put my lashes on the side. You can put yours on the top or you
could put yours on the bottom. Alright so you saw that I took the
floss to the back and you can either cut your excess yarn or just leave it back
there and make another knot. And then I added blue and white and now I'm gonna
add a little dot and so I get more of the white floss and I feed it through
and I'm gonna create like a little knot and that little knot is going to be the
dot that you see on the doll's eyes. Now you don't have to do this. I just find
that they don't look at spooky when the little dot is there so it's a matter of
preference. And again it's nothing more than a knot. So I go from one eye to the
other like I did everything else. And there's a dot and I bring it over and I
create like a little circle and I put the needle through it and that creates
the dot. And then I just put the needle back, like right over where I brought it
in and I push the needle through to the other side because again I'm adding hair
so all of those things will hide. And then that's it and you have two little
white dots. It's kind of like a cartoon thing and you can even move them around
and kind of get them situated, flatten them out, whatever you want so that they
look the way you want them to and there you have it. Now I'm gonna add a nose and
so I get a little bit of the yarn that's the same color as a skin tone and I feed
it through. And I'm gonna feed my needle another time and now I'm going to create
a knot. And then I'm going to go right back into that same stitch, basically. I'm
gonna go in a few times until the nose looks the way I want it to and then I'm
going to get some scissors and these are not the best scissors by the way try to
use like embroidery scissors when you're working with this. Mine were away, stuff
is packed and so I couldn't them and I'm using ladies kindergarten
scissors. But if you have, you know embroidery scissors, they're sharp and
they're thin in the front, that's your best bet when you're working with dolls
especially when you're using embroidery floss, hello. Okay so there's my nose and
I'm pretty happy with my eyes and my nose and I'm going to put some another
strand right here on this particular little bra. You don't have to and on my
sleeping mermaids I didn't but I wanted to add to this doll, in case you want it,
because if you don't want it it's okay, no biggie, but if you want it, I wanted to
show you how to do it and so I did add it to this doll. Now next thing was that
I added some eyebrows and some ears. And the ears are done exactly like the nose
and again you know this is just because I want to show you how to make ears
because this doll is gonna have long hair and she doesn't need ears. But I'm
gonna add them and I'm even gonna put some earrings which are nothing more
than some jump rings they're 20 millimeter jump rings and that's what
I'm gonna do to have earrings on this doll and that's it. You see that the ears
are done exactly the way the nose is done, I just go in one extra time and I'm
going sideways, vertically instead of horizontally that's the only difference
between the nose and the ears. So I make my knot and then I go back through that
same one and then I go up the head because this is how I hide my yarn and I
cut it. And then again I'm gonna cut that side right there and shape it nicely.
I think they came out pretty good, you can shape them as you like and cut off
the little furs on the top, if you want to and if you don't it's okay. All right
now we're gonna add hair and like I explained I'm doing a long hair so I cut
up five strands the length that I want it I got some floss that matches the yarn
and I'm going to locate exactly where I want to add the hair and with a needle
I'm going to sew it on. Now I know some folks do this differently I don't have a
sewing machine right now where I'm at. We do have a sewing machine but I don't
have one right now, plus anyway, I wanted to show you how to do this without a
sewing machine. So this is just your basic metal, large eye, blunt needle. And I
am again taking like four or five strands of hair and then with my needle
I'm going to secure the the hair to the doll by just sewing it, see. So I wrap I
wrap it in the thread, in the floss which is strong enough. I don't like using the
yarn, one because this yarn is not meant to be worked on that way and two I don't
like how bulky it looks when I sew using yarn so I found that if I use the floss
and it matches the yarn that it goes on really nicely, it just looks like a hair
line and it doesn't look like an extra big bump on your doll. So that's why I'm
using the floss and I really really like the way this looks. You don't see it. You
see that it goes on really nicely and it just hides away. Now I'm gonna go down
this row, probably not all the way, as you can see I'm here like midway. If I put
the needle away and turn the doll around, you will see that
she basically looks fine. Like I could just stop right here and not add anymore.
I'm just gonna put some glue, I do put hot glue, just over the very top, top. But
as you can see, you could just cut and you're done. Then go ahead and make a
knot with that floss so that your stuff is secure and I'm gonna get a glue gun
and add a little bit of glue right around here only and I did add a little
jewelry now I'm gonna add some blush and I'm just using sample blush and an
applicator so I put a little bit as eyeshadow and I use the same color and I
put some on the cheeks because all of my toys, if they have a face
they have blush. I don't know, it's just something I feel like they're not
finished until I add a little blush. And I don't like adding a mouth but I've
been asked so before I show you how to add lips let me show you the doll
without them. I think she looks really pretty but for those that would like to
add this is what I did. So I got some red floss to match the
hair and I pick a stitch and I wrap that stitch two times at a minimum and make a
knot and at first I took the floss and I pushed it upwards towards the head but I
didn't like the way the lips were formed so I pulled the floss back out again and
just like I did with the nose it's just preferable to go ahead and feed it
sideways this way. So that's what I did and it secures her lips in place and
then I got my scissors which again are not the best these are actually really
bad scissors to do this cause you take a chance that you can cut
on your yarn but it's what was available and so I use it and then you just want
to form them the way you want them and that's it here is the finish mermaid. I

My name is Nikki Starr Noce, and I'm born and raised in New York City.
I moved to California about five years ago when I started my spiritual path.
As a born and bred New Yorker I was always drawn to healing and helping people
but when you live in a city like that it seemed the only obvious thing to do is to become a medical doctor
so I'm also a medical doctor.
Then I realized when I was in clinic and working with people
that I didn't feel like I was really healing them.
I felt like I was giving all these prescriptions that were like bandages,
but there was so much more happening emotionally and beneath the surface that I could see and feel.
So I got into traveling and doing yoga and meditation and all this started to cause me to wake up.

When I came in May I just came casually for a three-day visit
I was curious about what the community had to offer.
Damanhur has so many layers and levels and so after 3 days
I could feel there was more, but I had to go.
And I thought: "okay I'll be back". And when I told my parents about it,
they looked on the website and they said: "There's a New Life program you know it's like
you go there and you live there for 3 months because we really feel this is your place maybe you should do this."
I was like: "Are you crazy I have work, I have retreats lined up, there's no way I can take all this time off
to live in a community for 3 months." But as the events started to move
this is what happened. I came back 3 months later for the New Life program
and then I've been here pretty much ever since doing 3 months in the US and 3 month in Damanhur,
and now I have a dream to help co-create a Damanhur community in California
to really help to share the beauty that is here.
For me the most amazing, powerful, unique, thing about Damanhur
is combining spirituality into everyday life.
The rituality, living and connecting with nature, but even to the detail of spirits of nature
I've always had this connection to energies in nature that are beyond what we can see
and in Damanhur we celebrate this.
I'm a seeker of knowledge, as I'm sure many of you are, and for me having a foundation of that
in my everyday life, with the people I live with to share that with
makes Damanhur's reality that special that I want to share it with the world.
