I learned ASL For My Son - Duration: 6:22.

- I'm Ali, and this is my son, Rafael.

I am hoping to learn American Sign Language

over the next 60 days.

Yay!

When Rafael was born, he failed his newborn hearing

screening at the hospital.

At six weeks old, we were given the diagnosis

that he has profound unilateral hearing loss

in his right ear, which means he is completely deaf

in his right ear, and that means there's a lot

of question marks.

He does have normal hearing in his left ear,

but I've talked to parents all over the country

with children with unilateral hearing loss,

and their experiences are vastly different

in terms of communication.

Some kids do totally fine with just one working ear.

Some kids rely completely on American Sign Language

as their form of communication, and some lie

somewhere in between.

When we got that first diagnosis from the audiologist,

the experience there was a little bit dry.

You know, she sort of gave us the diagnosis

and then immediately tried to sell us

a certain brand of hearing aid.

She sorta presented it as this is the only solution.

She sent us to an ENT and we didn't have

a great experience there either.

We felt sort of very lost after that.

We decided to get a second opinion,

so we went to Children's Hospital,

and we found an audiologist who gave us the same diagnosis

but talked to us more about different options.

We felt more listened to.

And the very next day, I got a phone call

from someone reaching out to me, saying, you know,

we received your son's diagnosis and we're gonna

put you in touch with a group called ParentLinks,

which is a community for parents of children

with hearing loss, so you can connect

with other parents who are going through the same thing.

It's been incredible to be enveloped by this

amazing community of parents and educators

and people who are advocates for children with hearing loss.

That's one of the reasons why I'm really interested

in learning ASL is just to give him another tool,

another way of communicating with him.

I just wanna give him every opportunity to succeed.

I think he's extraordinary.

At the very beginning, I started taking

some online ASL lessons, and at first, it was very basic.

It was just sort of like words.

So after about a week and a half of online,

I'm learning a lot of vocabulary words.

I was sick last week, so I know that I was sick.

The hard part for me right now,

and the frustrating is like putting it all together

and trying to create sentences,

because the grammar and the sentence structure

is very, very different.

Every time I look at my kid and I see that he knows

the sign for more.

More, you want more?

Or I think about how, yes, it might be difficult,

but I wanna keep going and I wanna be able

to help him communicate more.

It was really hard learning online only,

because I didn't have anyone to sort of like feedback with.

And then I actually started working with an ASL tutor, Loni.

We just had our first meeting and it was really

intimidating at first.

As soon as I saw her, I said,

"Hi, I'm Ali, nice to meet you."

You know, and she was happy that I knew that.

But then, I just sort of forgot myself

and started talking to her.

I said, "We're gonna go to Kate's desk right now

"and get some paperwork," and she had to remind me,

"I'm deaf," but she made me feel at ease right away,

'cause she could tell that I was very nervous.

I did a lot of writing things down today,

because I was a little overwhelmed, overwhelmed.

I know that's okay, sort of, at the beginning,

but I wanna be respectful of Loni

and not sort of have to write everything down all the time.

There was really great, because actually having

one-on-one time to go back and forth and practice my signs

with an actual person who knows the language,

it was just like a whole 'nother world of learning.

So I'm gonna quiz myself on some of these flashcards

that Loni and I have been working on.

I will not look, but I'll show you.

So this sign is daughter.

(bell rings)

So I'm about halfway through.

One of the things I really need to start working on now,

too, is to actually have conversation.

And that's where it gets a little bit tricky,

because ASL is its own language.

There's two different things.

There's signed English, which is,

"Do you want a banana or an apple?"

But in ASL, that same sentence would simply just be,

"Apple, banana, which?"

That's a really rudimentary example,

but a lot of things like that are very tricky

to sort of get the grammar and moving

things around into sentences.

This is Loni.

She's my tutor for ASL.

It's important that I have a tutor

because part of the grammar is your facial expressions,

so it really helps to have another person.

(bright music)

One of the first things I learned how to say is,

"How do you say?"

So I was trying my hardest to be able to communicate

only using sign.

It's been a little over 60 days since this whole endeavor

started, and I'm feeling really good about my progress.

I feel like I'm finally starting

to like put sentences together.

I'm getting really excited to start

actually speaking in ASL.

(bright music)

And now that I've had sort of a taste for it,

I'm really falling in love with the language.

I feel like this is something that's gonna bond us,

and it's going to make him understand

that sort of no matter what he needs,

he'll always be able to communicate with me.

(bright music)

Make Your Own Illusion - Duration: 4:58.

Hi I'm Jake and today we're gonna be talking about illusions.

We've talked about them before here on dong and I've talked about them over on Vsauce3,

specifically in the video, Impossible Objects. Link down in the description.

There I talked a bit about MC Escher, the painter known for his fascination with illusions

and impossible shapes.

Now one of his most famous works is Metamorphosis, which depicts a series of repeating tessellated

objects morphing into other objects by breaking down into their simplest shapes and then into

newer more complex ones.

He made a whole bunch and you can make your own at escher.ntr.nl/en/mmm.

It's a pretty cool website. Here's what it looks like.

Wow.

Whoa.

Trippy.

MetamoFUNsis

That's a dong, something you can do online now guys.

One of the most basic tricks you can play on your senses is with lines.

The human brain is incredible, but it's not very fast, so it has to guess what's

going to happen next so it's not always late to the game.

One way it does this is by tracking the light that hits your retinas.

Many of the most common illusions are built to take advantage of this.

If we take this picture of Michael and add some lines he starts to get a little warped

and appears to be shifting and stretching like some sort of smart monster.

Also if you're wondering about this, this is a tiny toy

for my dog. I have a dog now. His name's Fajita. I love him.

Our brains add lines to moving objects to help us guess where they're coming from

and where they're going.

We can also play with lines at konsumer.js.org.

Now one of the ones we have here is a cat animation and it's similar to the illusion you get while watching a video.

It might look like there's actual motion happening, but really it's just a quick series of flashing

images.

Sped up really really fast you can see how each pixel is read from left to right one

after another.

In fact this illusion, called a zoetrope, is the direct ancestor of film.

So this website let's you make your own versions of this pre-video phenomenon.

You can put in any set of frames and the website with split them into overlapping lines of different

thickness.

As you pass the bar over them, some frames are blocked while the one you want to see

in the moment passes through.

The concept of the illusion of video isn't new to us because we've lived with video for all of our lives.

But when the concept of moving pictures, which comes from the Persistent Vision illusion, first

appeared, it was an incredible invention.

Almost immediately after the invention of film, another illusion was added to it, the

illusion of 3 Dimensional film.

Most people have an image of 3d films being red and blue filtered glasses and they'd

be right, but that technology is as old as 1915.

These days 3D films are make using a different technique, called polarization.

Normally when light hits a surface, the light scatters randomly in all directions.

In order to fake a 3D image, you have to project two slightly different angles onto the same

surface and then "polarize" the light in order to make it more easily filtered out

by those paper glasses but now they also have plastic cool ones, Jack.

Guess you never got the cool plastic ones that they have for specific movies

like the Nightmare Before Christmas. They release that movie sometimes again around Halloween

and they have 3D glasses for it and they're pretty cool.

Here's a photo of them.

Now there are other ways to trick our brains into seeing 3d images.

Stereograms, also known as Magic Eye Puzzles, are a particularly strange set of illusions

that were very popular in the 80's and 90's. Back when I was a little baby

person.

And it takes advantage of the way our eyes process 3d images.

This website lets you make your own.

Just upload an image and the website will create your very own Magic Eye Puzzle.

And there's also some other parameters you can put in if you want.

If you've ever crossed your eyes looking at a wire fence or some other repeating pattern

and gotten your eyes kinda stuck, you've already experienced this trick to some extent.

Because each eye is relaying a slightly different image to the brain the brain has to guess

when it's looking at one thing, and when there are two things that look the same your

eyes can get confused.

Stereograms use this trick to "lock" your eyes in a position that makes the differences

between them appear to be a 3D image.

So remember kids, don't trust your eyes, don't trust your brain.

The only thing you can trust is your DONG.

Now links to where you can make your own illusions is in the description but before we do that

let's meet my dog.

This is little Fajita.

Fajita's a beautiful boy. He's 10 weeks old. I just got him a few days ago.

And I love him so much.

Oh the dog's gone! It was an illusion!

You know what else is an illusion? Reality.

But if you wanna explore some cool websites links to the ones we talked about are down in the description.

And if you want more DONGs in your life there's a playlist right here.

Alright I'm gonna go play with Fajita.

And then I'm gonna drink a sparkling water and who knows maybe I'll have a sandwich or something.

I'm not entirely sure I haven't really thought that far ahead.

Uhh okay. And as always

Thanks for watching.

But I saw so many peoples videos on it and it looked like a lot of fun and and in particular, Jocelyn from yogi with a book

I saw her video now, and I was like I'm just-- I'm just gonna do it. So booktubeathon is--

Takes place July 30th through August 5 and I thought I'd share with you my TBR of the reading challenges

so the first challenge is let a coin toss decide your first read, and I'm going to be deciding between

American Steet by Ibi Zoboi. I hope I'm saying her name right, but this is basically about a girl called Fabiola

who were in Haiti who emigrates to the US and her parents(jk) her mother her mother's detained at the airport

So she has to live in this whole new world by herself

And I mentioned this book in my shithole countries tag

And I've always wanted to read it

But I just never had access to it until now the library finally got it so I am super excited to read this

I heard there's a lot of magical realism elements in here. So I am looking forward to this book and the other one

I'm going to be deciding between is

the final six by Alexander

Alexandra! Alexandra Monir. She's an iranian-american author

And basically the way this book sounded like is like Hunger Games in space!

it's about teenagers that are sent to Europa? Europa. To just I think colonize

I dont know. They become instant celebrities overnight because everybody's kind of watching.

There's like a reality TV show element to I think

But there's something more sinister lurking behind the scenes is what I understand this, but I literally just picked it up. I have no idea

What's it about?

Besides Hunger Games in space, but um, it sounded like an interesting concept

So I'm gonna go heads for American Street

and tails for the final six

And we shall find out. Here is my quarter and I will flip it

Fuck. Okay. I got heads

Heads! So I'm gonna be reading

American Street first which I lowkey was hoping for anyways, so I'm really excited to get to this book

Number 2 read a book about something you want to do.

I've always wanted to be a magician. I've always wanted to be a witch

I just wish I had magic powers and I entirely blame that on

Harry Potter .When I read Harry Potter for the first time and literally was like well

Maybe maybe I am a witch. Maybe I will get my Hogwarts letter. Maybe the dementors are real, thestrals! they could happen

So I've always been intrigued by magic. I've always wanted magic. So I have the book I'm gonna read is a

A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab

I have never read a VE Schwab book

And I know a lot of people love this book and I follow her on Twitter and city of ghosts

Looks like it's gonna be super good. So I want to read that book

So I'm gonna check out some her writing in a darker shade of magic. I'm looking forward to this book so much

I only heard good things about it. So

Magic magic magic, I'm ready for it

It's hot! Number three

Read and watch a book to movie adaptation.

I was gonna go

with the first book in this series but I decided to change things up and

get the second one to series because I think it's a little

lesser-known and because I think the film is actually quite controversial because it's not exactly a faithful translation and that is

The lost world by Michael

Crich-ton? Crichton, I never know how to say his last name

The lost world is a sequel to Jurassic Park the back is super cool it says

Something has survived. It's a sequel to Jurassic Park and takes place six years after the Jurassic Park

scenario? The Jurassic Park event? the events of Jurassic Park! and something has survived in the parks and

The gang just have to go back and see what's up.

I haven't read this book in its entirety in (thinks about it )

I don't think I've ever read in its entirety. I've only read recipes. This is my brother copy

He adores dinosaurs and he loves books that are written by this author

So I'm actually looking forward to getting down and actually reading the entire thing

I know he's a really smart writer and the lost world is such a controversial

Adaptation I heard it's not similar at all and in the entire Jurassic Park (film) franchise

The lost world I think is one ones that people don't like so

looking forward to reading and watching the lost world because

Jeff Goldblum

Number

4! Read a book with green on the cover. I'm so excited about the next book

I'm gonna talk about because it was finally available for me at the library

I went on this library haul yesterday hence this video

But I'm so so excited because like a darker shade of magic

I've only heard great things about this book and it's a queer book

It's got POC and I'm just so excited to actually start it and I'm glad it fits this category so well

And that's The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I have literally only heard great things about this book

This is a bisexual main character who is Cuban and I think that is so so cool

I don't think I read enough books about Cuban people in general

So I'm excited to read a book about a Latinx person in Hollywood

I'm so excited for it

Number five? Yeah number five! Read a book while wearing

the same hat the whole time

Okay for this book, I chose a shorter read and the Hat

I'm going to be wearing is this one if you guys can see it

Hi everyone, welcome back my card got full so how to delete some things on my camera

But as I was saying if you haven't already seen hi annihilation definitely do it's such a great sci-fi film

it

makes you think it's really trippy and

it's just full of beautiful colors! It has Oscar Isaac love him, Gina Rodriguez love her, Tessa Thompson and it has a lot of

POC people, although the main character is Natalie Portman its just a great film if you haven't seen it

its just a great science fiction film

it has this very kind of almost 2001 Space Odyssey vibe in the sense that you feel like every scene just

Riddled with symbolism if you like dig a little bit deeper beneath the surface

so I'm gonna be reading Borne and I know nothing about Borne, so I am gonna read a little bit from the inside flap and

Borne is about a young woman called Racher? Rachel ! who survives a

Ruined City half destroyed by drought and conflict. The city is dangerously littered with

Discarded experiments from "The Company" a bio front-- biotech firm now

defunct and is punished by the unpredictable predictions of a giant bear?

She lives in a shelter that is made from a run-down

sanctuary she shares with her partner Wick and

one day Rachel finds Borne and Borne is a green lump that she doesn't know if his plant or animal

Has this very strange charisma and it just about them two - I'm really excited to read this book

I really enjoyed annihilation the book, if you haven't read annihilation in the book

and you like reading about depression and grief

I read all books on depression/ grief ! Annihilation very, very

Beautifully and poetically deals with this these topics in such a --I don't know

It deals over through the lens of nature. There's alot nature imagery in annihilation. And I hope to read the same

in Borne! The next prompt is... I can take this off now ( takes off hat)

The next prompt is read a book with a beautiful

Spine and I'm gonna reading a book that I did not get to finish

I started reading this for Sobathon and then I never got to finish this book because

the library loan, you know, I wasn't able to renew it

so it is

City of brass! I only got up a few pages last time. So I'm really hoping I'm gonna finish it completely

I think the spine of City of Brass is just beautiful. I love it

it is like a metallic ish color here and

the sky and the stars and I just think it's literally so beautiful and I'm super interested in this kind of

djinn element I know it has in here and I

just

Love learning about djinn in general

I started reading about djinn in American Gods by Neil Gaiman and I've just been super interested in djinn ever since then

Yeah! And number 7 is read seven books. I think I have seven right now?( counts) one two three four five six

Oh the Final, The Final Six can be number seven

I'll read it at the end of all these and I'm really looking forward to participating in bookathon

Didn't think I was going to but I think I am gonna have a really good time reading these books

Because I don't know they all seem like a fun bunch

And thanks for watching and I'll see you guys next time if you're participating in this bookathon, please

let me know what you are reading or if we're really in the same books and

Yeah, bye

Afro Latinos Get DNA Tested - Duration: 7:39.

- I just wanted to be more Black.

That's all, that's all I had wanted (laughs).

I didn't want to be a part of colonization.

(mysterious music)

- My name is Moriah (speaks in foreign language).

- Hi my name's Eli and I'm Puerto Rican.

- (speaks in foreign language)

- I'm Dominican obviously.

Well today we are doing a DNA test.

Afro Latinos are getting a DNA test from 23 and Me

and I'm excited.

- Being Puerto Rican and being this color

and kind of the history of Puerto Rico,

I've always been very curious what my background is.

- So, my family constantly talks about

being (speaks in foreign language).

They're always saying like

Because you know they're Dominicans

but I'm like

I look Black.

Like I know I come from Africa.

- I was in an elementary school

called Cesar Chavez Elementary

and that was the only time that I felt

that I didn't belong.

I would go to school and they would be like

Oh you're the (speaks in foreign language).

You're the (speaks in foreign language).

And I would just be like (speaks in foreign language).

I would talk to them and they'd just be like no.

It was just always a fight.

- In the Latino community and especially

in the Dominican community, racism is so alive.

And colorism is so alive and the lighter you are

Then it's like you're better

and that's ridiculous and it's bullshit.

I'm nervous because I don't know

if I'm gonna play into what the results are gonna be.

- I don't know, okay.

Register kits now (soft music)

Ah this is nice.

- Girl I am not the best person for this, oh my god.

I do not follow directions.

- The weirdest part is I'm about to spit

and you guys are watching.

Don't be seeing how I be spitting.

- This is so gross.

(spitting)

- Oh there's shit everywhere.

- This is so ... Wow this is exhausting.

All right, I think I did it.

- Close it up.

I mail in the kit.

Simple at that, at home science kit.

- All right, I guess to the lab it goes.

Dum-ba-dum, that's the African calling.

Dum-ba-dum.

- They've been calling you forever.

- Bum-bum.

(drum rolls)

- [Man] The results are in.

- I honestly feel like I'm nervous,

like I'm about to walk into my very first audition.

- Excited.

- Woo, okay, come on.

Oh wow.

So I'm 40.9% European.

33.7% East Asian Native American.

So Native ... I'm 31.4% Native Puerto Rican.

Yo, bow down.

Holy shit, my grandma was right.

That's significant.

Sub-Saharan African, 17%.

I'm like a little bummed out by that.

I pride myself on these curls, on this fro

and I guess this is all just 17% right here.

I guess that's just what it is.

- Okay.

Wow I'm 40.2% West African.

West African.

I'm 1.4% African Hunter-Gatherer.

(laughs) What does that mean?

I'm 27.4% European.

Who is European?

I don't see it anywhere.

This is some weird ish.

Oh 19.9% Native American, Mexico.

So 20% pretty much.

At the end of the day, we all come from Africa (laughs).

That's how I feel.

I don't know I just feel so surprised.

- Oh my god I'm about to die.

This is just not what I was expecting.

I am 48.7% European,

35% African with 7.9% being Native American

from Dominican Republic.

I don't know how I'm supposed to feel.

Like I'm laughing but inside I'm kind of just like, girl.

I'm gonna call my mom.

Let's see what she's gonna say, my mom.

You know Dominican mom's,

they're real reckless with their mouths.

So don't take anything too serious.

48.7% European!

That's like nearly 50% of who I am.

- [Mom] Hello?

- Hey mom.

- [Mom] How are you?

- Mommy, so I just got my

ancestry DNA results back.

I am 48.7 European.

- (laughs) Mommy (mumbles).

Mommy you're being recorded (laughs).

- So Saharan Africa, 64.7%.

Actually Native American, 21.0%.

2.0%

British and Irish, hello.

I'm sweating this is so exciting (laughs).

Afro Latina, like I'm excited (laughs).

- At the end of the day (speaks foreign language) who I am.

I'm still gonna be Julissa, I'm still gonna

have this curly, coiley hair,

I'm still gonna have melanin in my skin that's popping,

I'm still going to be

proud because (speaks in foreign language).

Okay?

- Well this is the interesting thing

is now that I see these results

and you kind of see currently culturally

how we perceive ourselves.

Now there's this Afro Latino movement

where honestly five years ago,

what is Afro Latino?

I'm from Chicago, there's not that big of a division.

You just think we're all Latinos, we're all Latin X

but through our culture and through our experiences

and seeing who we are we tend to break it down even more

and now I have that sense of pride that I'm Filipino.

- This is amazing.

Super super nice.

Trump Polls Rising (Despite Media Lies) - Duration: 5:04.

All right, how do we explain the president's gets beaten up, you know for 72 hours straight or a wheat

Well, of course, he's been beaten up since he been in office but in particular

Over his comments his press conference with Vladimir Putin

But yet his polling numbers going up

of course, you know people

There's some more the media hates on on President Trump. So the stronger support

Republicans and conservatives

you know field for the president a understand that he you know doesn't get a fair shake in the media sometimes when

when he starts

You know in a meeting starts talking about things and media will jump on something in just housing for that any couple doubt

You know, I'm sure shaky coupled that with how he's actually doing running the country

And being very successful a calmly doing well

You've got to see a lot of Republican voters see the Trump, you know is doing a good job in there

They're gonna you know, really judge him by his actions

So what is that? What does that say about the media?

I think it almost says as much about the media as it does about Trump that

the more they attack him and the more people are drawn toward him because in my view they

distrust and despise the media

Absolutely. This has been one thing that Trump has talked about it since day one and it continues from the very beginning of the campaign

to

Be any time the office in his office's presidency. The media doesn't you're in fair shake goes out of every every chance

They get and a lot of times the media will get too fast to make a move

And it'll be obvious that they're Jerry slanted and trying to push one agenda

We have we have the media every day CNN MSNBC

talking about the same things over and over again without really, you know

Even fact-checking themselves it it gets people pretty upset and they want to give the president a shot

President in doing well, if you were seeing more money in their paychecks their friends are employed people have jobs

You've gotta see this voters see this total disconnect and it's narrative that the mainstream media is pushing

Compared to with the result in this country

Some on the Democratic side not wanting to acknowledge that and some of the media saying that

You know Trump is only benefiting because of a strong economy

and and that's why his numbers remain high and and partly because his willingness to

press cultural hot buttons that

Excite his base but Democrats go on to say and I'm quoting from an article that I read earlier today from

the hill that said Democrats argued that Trump's base is not big enough to

Sustain

Electorial success either in November's midterm election or his 2020 election

It appears that his numbers have not moved since the last election in terms of going downward

They've only moved up so I don't know how they would explain him not being able to sustain a base of support

so there's two things on that one Trump's approval is

For all the talk about it stating it's pretty narrow range. It hasn't hasn't really moved too much

And then incidents and it's also better than a lot of presidents where they were at this point in their terms in recent history

But then we also take a look at going into the November 2016 elections

the medium was pushing this narrative that President Trump was blench did beat there was there were no

Core voters that made up the Trump coalition. That was just blatantly wrong

Seeing voters, you know workers feel that it turned out all across country, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan

Florida you see a lot of

hard-working people that understood that they need someone to actually pay attention to

America American jobs and and fight for that and that's kind of what they saw as we go into the November elections

you see that the

Congressional generic ballot is now within six points. I think's from this poll

It's getting narrower an hour and you see Republicans, dude

Yeah They gaining and conservatives understand that it's they if they want to

Make sure the country goes in the direction that we all believe it should go in. We need to have President Trump and a congressional

You know House and Senate that can can help the president get these things done and you see it every day with this thing area

Out in the states and expression when you take a look at Supreme Court

You've got more options for the presidency really shaped the direction of this country and that's going to really boost up

enthusiasm longer along your Hopkins

Yeah, I I think you're right. I think the Republicans are going to really

You know, although he's not on the ballot. He is on the ballot

They're gonna ride president Trump's coattails because of his policy initiatives and his promises that he's kept
