Waching daily Jul 28 2018

Welcome to Sewing for a living tutorials where I share different sewing techniques and

how I like to make some of the most common sewing alterations and

repairments. In this video I am going to show you how to attach invisible zipper

to a dress that has no lining and no facings but does have a waistline seem

that you need to be careful to match when sewing. You are going to need the

invisible zipper foot, that has those two separate groves for both sides of the

invisible zipper. You are also going to need the regular zipper foot which you

are going to use for the transition between the zipper and the joining seam

below it. If you don't have an invisible zipper foot, you can use the regular

zipper foot for the whole project. You are also going to need the regular food

for the actual joining seam under the zipper. Here I have a dress with the

zipper already sewn. It has a seam at the waist that I need to be careful for. I

want to match the seam at both sides of the zipper and because I have no lining

or facing on this dress, here is how it is going to look on the inside. Here are

some more things I want to pay attention to. First, I don't want the zipper tape to

show over the top of the neckline. Second, I don't want too much of the zipper tape

showing and the zipper to be as invisible as possible. But I also don't

want the seam going too close and over the teeth, so that the zipper won't close.

Here is how to do it. I already have the neckline hemmed and the

seam allowance searged to clean the edges of the details. If you don't have a

serger, you can use some other overcasting seam or zigzag the edges for

more sophisticated look. Next, I need to determine the position of

the zipper. To place it right, I like to imagine the zipper already sewn, which

is the zipper and the dress face sides together. I'm going to open it because

that's how I'm going to sew it. Then, lay the zipper facing up and turn it over to

align the seam allowance with the zipper tape and the top stopper to the neckline.

For a girl's dress the zipper has to go approximately six inches or 15

centimeters under the waist in order to be functional. For a woman's dress, you

may go for eight inches or 20 centimeters.

I usually just eyeball it and go with the zipper length. To start, I'm going to

insert the invisible zipper foot. It has two separate grooves for each side of

the zipper. I will start with the right side first. I'm going to align the top of

the stopper with the top of the neckline and the edge of the zipper tape with the

edge of the back center seam allowance. The free end of the zipper tape is going

to stick out for now. Then, I'm going to put some pins to fix the zipper in place.

I sew at the right side first, so I'm going to insert the zipper coil into the

right groove of the invisible zipper foot. I'm going to lock my stitch at the

beginning.

Now, if you just sew the zipper like this, a bit of the zipper tape is going to be

visible on the face side. Tere is a trick to sew the zipper as if it is

really invisible. You need to flatten the zipper coil so that you sew as close

to the teeth as possible. I'm doing that with my fingers as I go. In order to sew

close on the right side, keep the needle centered. If you move it to the left you

are going to sew too far from the coil and the zipper tape will show on the

face side of the dress. If you find it hard to do this way

you should iron the zipper coil flat prior to sewing the zipper and go as

close as you can but be careful not to go over the coil because if you do, the

zipper won't close. I'm going to sew all the way down until I have at least

six inches or 15 centimeters of the zipper under the waist. My zipper is a

bit too long, so I'm not going to sew it all the way down. I lock the seam on this

side as well. I'm closing the zipper to see if I've sewn it nicely and I see

that I've sewn over the coil, so I need to unpick a bit at the top. Apart from

that, I like how the rest of the zipper turned out. Next, I need to attach the

zipper on the other side. This time I need to be more careful where I

position the zipper. First, I need both sides of the waist seam to match.

Second, I want to match the end of the seam on both sides as well. This way the

transition between the zipper and the center back seam would be easier to make.

I'm going to use a pencil to mark exactly where these points are on the

other side of the zipper.

Then, I'm going to transfer those marks to the wrong side of the zipper, which is

going to be on top when I saw.

I'm careful to match the marks on the zipper with the right side of the dress

and the top stoppers with the neckline. I also don't want to twist the zipper as I

attach it to the other side. Once again, I'm going to lay the zipper facing up

and turn it over to align with the seam allowance face sides together with the

dress, and pin it in place.

To sew as close as possible to the zipper teeth, sew the left side guiding

the coil into the left groove and move the needle to the left.

Flatten the zipper coil with your fingers and go all the way down until

you reach the second mark that shows where to stop sewing.

Reverse stitch a few times to lock the seam.

Flip the zipper in so that it stays inside the dress and zip it up to see

how you've done.

I like how I've matched the zipper at the waist and the neckline so I'm moving

on to make the bottom of the seam.

Align the fabric on both sides of the dress under the zipper.

I'm going to put a pin to keep them in place.

Then, use the standard zipper foot to make the transition between the center

back seam and the invisible zipper. I saw on the left side of the zipper foot and

with my needle positioned to the left so that I go as close to the zipper as I

can. Start from the bottom up at the same distance that you are going to leave for

seam allowance at the center back seam. Make sure to keep the zipper out of the

way and align the fabric so that you saw only through both layers of fabric.

Sew it up until both stitches intersect for at least three-eighths of an inch or one

centimeter.

Again, check on the face side to see if all the seams are aligned and the

transition between the zipper and the rest of the seam is smooth.

I like how mine turned out, so I'm going to continue with the rest of the seam.

Using the regular zipper foot, start a bit over the end of the transition seem

to intersect those two seams as well. And then, go all the way down to the hem.

Here is my invisible zipper almost done.

I need to do just one more thing since I don't have lining or facings on this

dress. I need to hide the free end of the zipper tape so it's not visible on the

face side. Just fold it in and sew over the neckline seam so you don't have

another seam that is visible on the face side. If you prefer you, can fold

the free end of the zipper tape under in the beginning and skip the step at the

end.

Here are my finished dresses. This is how the invisible zipper looks on the wrong

side and on the face side.

And here are my girls modeling them. I'll link to the pattern in the description

below if you are interested. I hope you like this video if so give it a like and

Raverglueck Interview - Matchy (Berlin) - VLog #23 - Duration: 21:41.

We are here today with Martin, known as the DJ and producer Matchy.

Thanks for having us!

Our first question would be: Why the name Matchy?

The name was created back then when we were still playing as the DJ duo Matchy & Bot.

We were discussing possible DJ names and we thought would sound quite cool.

Bot is his last name. My last name is Bley which we thought would sound weird as "Bley and Bot".

So Matchy originated from Martin as my sister always named me Macthy back then.

So this is how Matchy was created.

You´ve just mentioned that originally you were part of the duo Matchy & Bot.

I remember that you gave several interviews for example with Faze Mag.

And their headline was "Two DJs, One Thought"! And now you´re on your own for how many months already?

Since the beginning of this year, basically.

And how do you feel? Are you happy?

I can´t complain! I am very satisfied. I must admit that things are even better right now compared to the past.

I´ve released many things over the past months and only focused on the music.

I used to have another job also but now I am exclusively producing and playing.

In this short timeframe I actually managed to be one of the top 100 artists on beatport for Afro House and Melodic House/Techno.

And this was really great when you can achieve this much in such a short time!

Comparing to be part of a DJ duo vs. being on your own: how would you describe pros and cons?

Being a duo it´s cool for example as you travel together.

So you´re traveling with your friend, having a good time together.

Usually you also have dinner with hosts, for example. It´s a comfy atmosphere.

Playing a set you need to be aligned as it can get difficult if you try to steer the set in a different direction..

Being a solo DJ, it´s only your call as you don´t have to align on what´s coming next.

Or how you want to design your set.

Yeah, you can just tell your own story and you don´t have the risk of maybe playing against each other.

So that aspect becomes easier when playing on your own.

Now a difficult task! Please try to describe your music style with one word!

Emotional.

My music style is really versatile because also when producing music I do not only focus on one type of music.

I like experimenting with different genres under the heading of techno music.

For example including Afro House and Melodic Techno. The common thread is always a melodic spirit.

A friend of mine told me that he would hear in my productions that there are thoughts and feelings behind this music.

Super interesting! Please complete the following sentense: " I became a DJ because ..."

Because I love music! Music is my life. I actually produce music for a longer period of time than playing music.

Producing music was always my priority. I´ve played the piano for quite a long time.

This might also helped a lot for the production.

But sure, playing music is great as you get a direct feedback from the audience.

And when you are able to play your own music and the people love it, that´s wonderful!

Or when someone approaches me after my set and says "wow, I´ve really enjoyed this!", that really gives you some energy.

This is one of the major reasons why I am doing what I´m doing!

I always ask myself whether some DJs are actually annoyed when you give them some feedback.

But you´re saying it´s something great, right?

Yes, I think it´s super cool! I like being close to the people, I think it´s great when they come over to talk to me.

So you are actually living the dream of many! Do what you love!

How could we imagine a normal working week in your life? Do you have any rituals? Or a fixed production schedule?

No, not a fixed schedule. Despite releasing a lot, I sometimes do not produce anything for 2 or 3 weeks.

It´s actually a funny question cause I´ve been asked a lot "what do you actually do during the week?"

Many people underestimate how much time you also need as a DJ during the week for administrative tasks.

Like coordination with my booker or manager. Then release planning. Social Media, videos.

Do you take care of your social media yourself? Yes, I do it myself but I also have some helping hands.

It´s a lot, right?

Yes, it´s a lot and it´s getting more and more important. So for example to steer the ads it´s nice to have some support.

Usually, I have like one to two days per week for all the administrative stuff.

This could be a correspondence with a label, planning future journeys, accounting.

You do all this yourself? Yes.

Would you say that you can be succesful as a DJ without being on social media?

I am thinking about adequate examples. To be honest, I can´t think of an example.

Compared to 10 years ago, the business became much faster and more dynamic.

Back then it was enough to release one, two or three EPs.

Today, when you don´t release something every month as an let´s say "average DJ", that´s problematic.

That´s different of course for the top league like Maceo Plex or Kölsch for example.

They play at so many events that there is only little time left to go to the studio.

But they already have this big name, so it´s fine. They also share a lot on social media so the audience knows what´s going on.

Like from the festivals or gigs they are playing at. So it´s not only about the production because they also have their hits.

But in general if you want to be present, you should release something every month and do a good job with the promotion.

The competition just became really tough., it´s a dynamic environment. And the audience requests new music.

Im the genre where I am playing it´s also different compared to DJs that play with vinyl, for example.

From the past I know that in some weeks you need to finish two remixes and a track.

How does that work? How do you align the pressure with the creative work?

Do you always find a way and are you always happy with the result?

Producing a track is like painting a picture. There is never really a real ending.

You can always keep working on it, but this can also make it worse.

Cause it can get over-engineered. That´s a real challenge when producing a track.

It´s always a good a idea to produce a track and to put it aside for a while and listen to it again after a while.

The inspirations for my tracks are more from my sub-conscious. Like the fact that I live in Berlin and spend my time somewhere outside.

Sometimes I work late at night on my music, or on a Sunday.

I was never in a situation where I had no ideas at all. There were times when I didn´t have the power to produce.

So I didn´t feel too good about the potential result, but I always have some ideas when I sit down and start working.

And when you need a break, you go outside and take a walk?

Sure! Also meeting friends, sitting at the Spree, drinking a beer, chilling at a park, having a nice dinner.

You´ve left your apartment in Darmstadt and moved to Berlin. Was this decision based on your carrer as a DJ?

Or is this city something special to you in general?

I´ve always played in Berlin from time to time.

So you could have gone to Berlin only for your gigs, why did you decide to move here?

Well, in Berlin you actually have the chance to play at many clubs! But they don´t pay hotels or travel expenses.

So often it´s just for fun. Which was totally fine!

But at some point if you invest a lot yourself and you have to produce with euipment,

then you do need a plan on how to handle this.

For me this city was also an inspiration itself and I always thought it was a cool place to be.

Where I come from, near Frankfurt, the atmosphere with the banks and all that is pretty hectic.

Many people are focused on their job. And here people want to live first instead of working.

And I share this attitude. Music is also a kind of exit tool from the daily routine.

And most of the labels I work with are in Berlin. My booker and manager are from Berlin.

That was also another reason why I moved here.

Speaking of clubs: which ones are your favorites?

Let´s say someone from a different city comes to Berlin for a weekend, what are your recommendations?

I have to admit that I don´t go clubbing too often anymore.

One club would be the Sisyphos just because it is a great club! It´s something that´s interesting to see.

With different floors and the open air area, it´s attractive for many people.

KaterBlau would be another one I would recommend. Before going there, you could also go to the Holzmarkt.

It´s super nice to sit there and grab a drink.

But there are so many good clubs!

Like Burg Schnabel, Club der Visionäre, Birgit und Bier- everything at the Spree is super cool!

One weekend is definitely not enough!

What is a funny story you could tell that happened to you?

I once stole and drank the Jägermeister bottle of Oliver Koletzki.

Jägermeister... oh gosh! Yeah, it didn´t end well! But it was a super funny festival!

Did he notice what happened?

Yes, he did! We had some fun together...

Which projects do you work on right now?

There are many pending releases for this year!

This has to be planned, as it can take three to sixmonths when the track is ready.

Why does it take that long?

Well, the label has to plan the releases.

An example from the label Lauter Umfug: here the planning for the remaining year is done.

And that is common if you don´t release on a weekly basis.

The labels need to plan the releases, the sales has to be coordinated.

And I also have like 3 EPs in the timeline and some remixes.

And I will start working on an album!

So here I need to make a decision on the style I want to pursue.

Do you have a basic idea?

I want to take a step back from pure electronic music and work more organically.

I want to work with singers or for example with strings or guitar players.

It´s supposed to be a fusion of electronic music combined with natural instruments.

I think this makes electronic music tangible for the audience.

Sounds really cool and promising! We are excited already.

Which festivals did you play at and what would be your recommendations?

It´s always valubae to know for our audience what people from the scene recommend.

I played at the Sonne Mond Sterne which is a cool festival, especially the Katermukke stage.

Then Family Park was great. I also played at the Sonar.

I am a fan of one-day festivals that are smaller, maybe around 2,000 people.

It´s usually a nice and relaxed atmosphere compared to "I am here all weekend and need to give everything!".

In Ofenbach where I am orginally from, there is this Kommune 2010 where they have Open Airs like the Stil vor Talent one just recently.

Bigger festivals are also cool but I personally appreciate the smaller ones.

It all has its pros and cons.

Is there a special event that is like your dream to play at?

Not an event in particular. But I´ve really enjoyed my international gigs like in Zurich or Lisbon.

At some day I´d love to travel the whole world playing my music.

Like playing in Brazil or touring through Austrlia. Or Asia!

So far you´ve played in Europe, right? Yes.

Some time ago we also played in the US but it was only two gigs.

If you can dream it, you can do it!

I do hope so!

Cool! Thank you so much!

MY BRUTAL CAR ACCIDENT - Duration: 8:50.

Good morning guys, welcome to this new video.

You may ask yourself

why I have this thing on my neck or

why do I wear a beanie or so

It's because it's winter in Australia, so in the south it get's very cold, in the north not so much.

But here it get's cold.

That's why I wear the beanie.

To the neck collar, that's why the video is named like this.

I had an accident or actually two accidents.

That's what I wanted to tell you about and what happened.

Why it happened

The sun is shining in my face at the moment but

I wanted to be lighted.

The thing was at the last video I was at the cornfield

and after the cornfield when it was ready with the fields.

I went down to Melbourne

at Easter... down to Melbourne

and after to Ballarat to a potato farm,

where I was working for 1-2 months or so

or 33 days or so...that's

I think it were 5 days per week

about 33 days. You can calculate if you want how much that is.

After that I went back to Melbourne when it was finished.

or for just one day and after I already went to...

I had another job already on a dairy farm

in Warrnambool.

or 45km from Warrnambool

and..yea..

There was my first accident.

I made a mistake on the road

at a turn

and somone crashed in me.

It can happen.

I thought "Ok, I will buy a new car"

About a week later or so...or for now...a few days later

I had the new car.

It was posted in a group on Facebook.

I wrote the guy

where we wanna meet and so on and then we met

I bought the car for 1900$

You see it here.

It was a pretty cool car, just had a few defects

idk..heater was not working or

the shift stick was loose but the rest was actually good

I was pretty satisfied with it. I wanted to build my bed in it from the other car

and then, at a time, after work I wanted

on my way home

I kinda had

a sharp curve

over corrected, probably drove too fast in the curve

or so in the sharp curve

and then I over corrected and then I rolled over.

Yea, that's how the 2nd accident happened.

And then I

couldn't remember anything properly after.

What during the accident or after happened.

I woke up in the ambulance.

They said I had big luck and..

that I ..

was found outside of the car.

Accordingly, ...

actually...

I can't remember that I climbed out, but apparantly yes.

Or I flew out of, I don't know.

Anyway, a farmer who have seen this

called the police and the ambulance and so on.

Sorry btw because the construction work, but it's not my fault.

I thought this place is good up here on the hostel..on the rooftop.

Then the farmer observed it

called tha ambulance and so on and after

I was driven to the hospital in Warrnambool first,

where they inspected me, made CTs

Then they diagnosed that I

have a fracture in my neck. If you want to know better, it's the C6 bone or so.

And this one was broken.

And it had to be fixed

And that's why I had to be flown to Melbourne in the night.

It was on the 21st thursday

so, 21st of June

And I was flown on the night to friday to Melbourne with a little airplane.

And then on Sunday

I had my surgery.

Also on my head here I had a injury.

Probably you can't see it, but there I had a cut

a deep cut, where a loose car battery hit me

or something else, but probably the loose car battery

because I had it in my car, a old car battery.

I changed it.

And probably this during the accident

was thrown against my head

and gave me a deep cut

So it has to be fixed by the plastic surgeons.

Weird that I had to be fixed by a plastic surgeon :D but yea

And the other surgeons

the neuro surgeons fixed my neck

and accordingly I have to wear this neck collar till the 10th of August.

To avoid bending/flexing of my neck

so I shouldn't move it and so on

so not turning around and so on

and with that it should be avoided

With that it's going bad and I have to turn my whole body if I wanna turn somewhere

and it's supposed to bring the neck or bone back into the optimum position.

That's about the neck collar.

It will be taken off soon hopefully.

And then I will have some xrays.

If anything is alright

or it has to be operated again, can also happen because something went wrong with this thing

and I moved too much or I don't know what.

it can all happen, but I hope not.

I had definetely

a shock after the accident and so on and what's happening.

I'm very very thankful that I can still live and

that I'm not disabled or something. I can still move my hands and everything.

I don't have a problem to wear a neck collar

That's actually the smallest problem

I can be just thankful that I

can still live on this world.

Jungian Psychology - The Persona - Carl Jung - Duration: 22:55.

hi this is emerald and welcome to the diamond net and today I'm going to be

talking to you about the persona in the Jungian psychological model so the

persona is part of the Jungian psychological model and it's the aspect

of that model that's concerned with how we present ourselves to the world so

it's basically the social mask that we put on in order to fulfill particular

roles within a society and we may have different facets of our persona that we

use at different times so for example our persona may be different around our

family as compared to how it is around our friends or it might be different

from how it is at work and this is quite natural because essentially what the

persona is is a tool it's a tool for being able to function within a social

matrix and it's the face that we show to the world it's the selective lens for

what we allow other people to see about us and in fact this is how other people

come to know us is through our persona now despite the fact that the persona is

so elementary to our functioning in the social matrix and how other people come

to know us it's really a drop in the gallon bucket when it comes to the

entire psyche in fact it is the most superficial layer of the Jungian

psychological model now a lot of people don't realize that the persona is

surface level and they think that they are their persona I'll get into that a

little bit later but I think in order to show the surface level nature of the

persona we as modern people have a really useful metaphor that we can look

at so if we look at let's say a social media profile clearly we have a lot of

different things that we can choose on that profile as a way to present

ourselves to others on the Internet you know so we can fill out our about Me

section and we can say oh I'm this person here and we can show our pictures

and we can show what's going on in our lives by showing people pictures we can

choose what we post up on Facebook

and that's essentially what you're doing when you're creating your

persona you're putting on this mask for the world to see so that you know people

can come to know you as this particular person in this particular identity but

most people would not make the mistake of actually conflating themselves with

their Facebook profile you know that would be a little bit silly to do but a

lot of times people do conflate themselves with their persona that

they've chosen here so in order to really understand what the persona is

and how not to over identify with it we have like three main things that we have

to know number one the persona is not the self it is just one small aspect of

the self the second thing is that the persona is not fixed it's not something

that you were just given at birth and there it is that's your persona you had

to actively construct your persona and so you can always change your persona to

anything you want really the sky is the limit with it and the third thing is

that the persona is not the ego now it's quite common for these two things to get

mixed up because they do have sort of a similar feel to them and they're used in

similar ways but really what the persona is is your social mask it's how you

present yourself externally for functioning in the world whereas the ego

is more internal it's a layer deeper so the ego is everything that you believe

yourself to be and even though it is a rather small area of the psyche compared

to the entire rest of the psyche you know it's usually more expansive than

the persona usually there's more things that you identify with than what you

actually present to the world now having said that for most people the persona is

heavily informed by the ego so we tend to create our social masks in congruence

with the ego structure now if someone has a weak or underdeveloped ego they

may make the mistake of only identifying with their persona so the persona and

the ego would essentially be the same thing but this is very unhealthy because

the persona is by its very nature very superficial and narrow so if you narrow

your ego down to the level of persona it creates a lot of problems now this

pattern of identifying only with the persona tends to happen what I've

noticed anyway is in young teenagers so they may come to be identified with a

particular style of music or a particular clique of some kind and they

may try to present themselves in a way that's congruent to

that and they don't want anything else that contradicts what that is so for

example if there's a kid who gets really really into rap music and they might

think oh well I don't listen to any other kind of music and I'm only going

to dress this way and I'm only gonna talk this way and you know I live the

hard life and that's the only way that I am and anything that basically falls out

of that range of being a rapper you know is not going to be acceptable for them

to show in their persona and perhaps not even acceptable for them to accept as

part of their ego so that can be a problem now as I said this is an

outgrowth of underdeveloped ego you know so it's makes sense that a

lot of teenagers do that because teenagers are just constructing their

identity so they essentially like take these templates in the form of these

different styles of music or a different type of clique and they sort of use it

as their clay you know that they can mold now the problem is when they don't

actually mold it and they just want to take it like straight as it is and only

be that you know but it can actually be a decent template for building up the

personality it's quite natural for teenagers to do that and usually by the

age of about fifteen or sixteen the person is starting to get a bit more of

a refined personality around that basic idea so even if let's say somebody

really identified with rock music and you know that was all they were about

when they were 13 14 usually when they're 15 they start to read some

nuance into that personality because they're building up in more complex ways

now having said that the majority of adults still somewhat believe that they

are their persona but they're more likely to see it as just one aspect of

themselves so they're more likely to realize that they aren't just the way

they come off to people know as I said before the ego and the persona are

usually pretty congruent with one another but there can be some

incongruences let's say if a person has a trait that they know or they believe

that society won't accept in them or they know their friends and family won't

accept in them so for example if a person

was gay let's say 50 years ago you know there can be some very real social

consequences and so a person even if they knew that they were gay and it was

part of their ego they might choose to omit that from their persona so it would

be kind of like a minor repression now if that person who had omitted that

trait from their persona also had a lot of shame relative to being gay or

perhaps a lot of judgments about other people being gay you know they may not

even realize it themselves in which case you know the knowledge that they're gay

maybe just repressed down to the shadow so they would genuinely not know it this

is where repression happens like a full-blown repression so that's the

difference between lack of expression so lack of allowing a trait into the

persona and an actual full-blown repression now of course not expressing

a particular trait in the persona is not ideal but it's not quite the same thing

as going unconscious to that trait now in this next part of the video I'm going

to go over 7 different problems that can be experienced with regard to the

persona so the first one is not creating a persona at all you know so essentially

what the persona is is it's a tool for functioning in society so if a person

neglects to create a persona or has an underdeveloped persona what they're

gonna find is that they're not able to adapt very well socially

because this is how people come to know them if they don't really have an idea

of how they're coming off to people or what their personality is that other

people see they're not going to be able to function as effectively in a

social way all right the second persona problem is constructing your persona in

such a way that it doesn't allow for the expression of the full depth and breadth

of your personality so in another one of my videos I spoke about how people have

a preconditioned personality a lot of times people will think that a person's

personality is just a conglomeration of different social constructs but this

actually isn't true there's something that's there even before society

enacts itself upon you and you're not just a blank slate and so if you construct a

persona doesn't allow that natural personality

to come out then you're going to run into some issues all right the third

persona issue is if someone has a persona that's too narrow and is only

identified with one or a few different social roles so for example if somebody

is a doctor and that's all they are they don't have any interest outside of being

a doctor and that's what they identify as and I think a really good example of

this would be in the movie Black Swan where the main character that's played

by Natalie Portman you know she's so obsessed with being a dancer like that's

her whole entire life like she never really does anything else other than

that her whole entire life is basically this huge sacrifice for dance and she

becomes very neurotic as a result and there's this one scene when she's

meeting this guy at this bar and you know she can't really loosen up and he

and he asked her hey you know who are you and she goes I'm a dancer you know

and that was the first thing that she said you know she didn't go straight to

oh my name is this or oh I you know my name is this and I like to do that it

was immediately I'm a dancer and her identity her persona essentially

eclipsed her whole entire personality another movie example of this would be

in the movie Requiem for a Dream where the character that's played by Ellen

Bernstein she's basically this old mother kind of figure where you know see

essentially she lives alone you know her son hardly ever comes visit her

her husband passed away years ago and you could tell that the only things

that she ever identified herself with were being a wife and being a mother and

I think beauty is also part of her past identification but because

she's in a sense like past her prime in that way in the movie she has a lot of

like fantasies about going back and you know like having her husband Seymour

there and being the mom and you know maybe the son's gonna have some kids and

you know she's gonna wear a red dress and be beautiful again and she gets into

like this fantasy of trying to be the way that things were in

the past and have that persona that

she's already outgrown and so because these are very narrow and were actually

very time sensitive the way that she was identifying now she's stuck

with not really having a persona which goes back to that very first problem

that I mentioned of not having a persona so she lost her ability to really

function in society and she ends up in a lot of really negative situations in the

movie as a result and this example brings me to problem number four of the

persona is making something that you'll lose a core aspect of your persona so

for example youth is something that everyone will lose and so if you

identify strongly with your youth you know you're going to have a really

really hard time as you get older because essentially if your main core

identification is with youth and all of your other identifications stem off of

that identification what will happen is that you'll slowly start losing your

ability to have a persona as you get older and life will sort of feel like

it's passing you by because you won't be able to function as well in society now

this is a huge risk in our society because most of the people they depict

in the media like in movies that type of thing most of the protagonists of

stories and most of the characters that you're meant to identify with are young

people and so because of this because of the lack of representation of older

people in movies it becomes difficult for someone to create a

persona from that and so a lot of older people tend to get more and more

disconnected from society because they just don't know how it is they can fit

in in a way that they want to be

alright problem number four is conflating the

persona with the ego I spoke about this before so somebody with an

underdeveloped ego may come to identify only with their persona

so anything that falls outside of the persona they don't consider it to be an aspect of themselves

alright problem number six with the persona is it was someone's persona is too rigid because this basically blocks

off a lot of their natural drives and a lot of their natural personality

doesn't come through now this rigid persona happens when somebody tries way

too hard to come off a particular way or be seen in a particular light so for

example teenagers are also like notorious for this mostly because they

tend to conflate the persona and the ego and I was no exception to this

so for example when I was a teenager I was heavily identified with like goth type of stuff

so I didn't want to ever be seen in anything that was other than that like the way that I like to dress

so if I were to be seen in let's say I don't know the color blue or pink or something like that

well that would be you know an issue for mebecause I wanted my persona to be just a particular way

I wanted to be perceived by others in just the right way

and anything that fell outside of that I didn't want

now another example that I see really really common is that

there are a lot of guys who are trying to be like alpha males

and the problem with this is that they get really stuck in that persona

or they can get really stuck in that persona

so they may be afraid to show signs of vulnerability

you know might be afraid to display their emotions

so this can be a problem because that can lead to a persona that's too rigid

all right the very last persona issue that I want to bring up is something called negative restoration

so this is where somebody basically ends up trying to in a sense resurrect a persona that they used to use

but it's no longer relevant to them

now this usually happens after some form of trauma or upheaval

where they get really afraid to behave in the way that they're behaving and coming off the way they're coming off

so they may revert to an old ego structure all right

so that's it for the issues that I'm going to go over in the video

and these seven issues that I brought up are by no means an exhaustive list

but this gives you an idea of what can be some common things to watch out for when you're creating your persona

but when you're consciously creating your persona it helps to know what

having a healthy persona entails

so there are three main qualities that constitute a healthy persona

the first is that it's flexible so it can adapt to many different types of situations

allowing you to fit in in many different social environments

the second is that it's transparent

that means that mask is see-through and allows whatever happens to be inside to come out within reason

so it allows you to express more of the full depth and breadth of your personality

the third is that it'sheld at a distance and recognized as a tool

as opposed to like some inextricable part of yourself

so you can see it as something that you're using to interface with the world

but it doesn't really mean all that much about yourself

all right so here are some steps and some things to keep in mind for creating a healthy persona

so the first step is to realize that your persona is 100% created by you

so they can either be consciously created or unconsciously created

and in knowing this you should be able to feel at ease with being able to create whatever persona

you feel is going to best allow you to express yourself

oftentimes people will feel held back by the idea that whatever persona they have

is just the one they're stuck with and that any change to that would be dishonest

but really when it comes to persona creation the sky is the limit

and as long as you're making it fairly congruent with your internal experience

and it's not a dishonest thing

all right once you realize this about the persona then you can go on to the second step

where you decide to consciously create your persona

and to decide to create it in whichever way you think is going to best serve you

so I think the best way to think about this is in relation to like

think of yourself as an artist and your persona as your work of art

so that way you can feel like you can create it any which way that you want

and it'll be authentic to you

and I would recommend approaching this in the same way

that children approach the game of make-believe

so children in order to prepare themselves for adult life

they might pretend to be pirates in play or they might pretend to be a princess up in a castle

or some adventurer of some kind

and basically this gets them used to playing some kind of social role

it'sthem trying on four different personas albeit very fantastical personas

butthis is what gears them up for being able to create an actual persona

once they become a teenager or maybe even a older child

so I recommend approaching your persona creation in the same way

so a child when they're pretending to be a pirate or they're pretending to be a princess

they don't literally believe themselves to be those things they're just enjoying wearing that social mask for a while

and then they can put it down and they can go back and they can eat dinner with their family as their usual self

but theproblem with adults is that we get so into the social mask that we are putting on

that we actually believe ourselves to be that social mask

so if we grow up and we decide that we're gonna be a doctor

we think oh I am the doctor as opposed to realizing that's the social mask that we're wearing

so treat it a lot like a child would play their game of make-believe

do it with a certain degree of detachment but always with a lot of joy

and a lot of effort put into it just like a child would put in

so give yourself permission to play make-believea little bit to find out what it is that

you want out of your persona

all right once you've started to create your persona a little bit

the next thing that you want to do is start to let go of things within your current persona thatare no longer serving you

if something is keeping you from being your full self

or expressing in some way that you'd like to be able to express yourself

you can actually decide not to do that anymore and switch that aspect of your persona out with

some other aspect that's going to allow you to express yourself better

so you're not married to your persona

and if your persona is making it difficult also for you to adapt in particular situations

that means it's not really doing its job properly

and so you could benefit from switching some things out

and just letting go of things that are just no longer really doing anything positive for you

alright so step number four is that once you've started creating your persona

and once you've started to let go of things that no longer serve you

it should become quite clear that your persona is just something that you've created

and in doing so this will allow you to go a bit deeper

and to realizethings about yourself that you may not have known

so you can really use this as a springboard into inner work

and I highly recommend you do so because it will help you even more so go toward the things that you want

and it will help you create the persona that you want

so you might try to do things like shadow work and meditation

and basically anything that's going to allow your consciousness to travel beyond the confines of your ego

all right so while you're creating your persona the fifth and final step is

to maintain a certain level of distance and detachment from your persona

so remember your persona is not the full extent of yourself

the persona is only a tool that can either be picked up or set down whenever it's not useful

and the persona is always 100% created so it is an invention of the mind

so my recommendation for keeping distance is to create the persona

inmuch the same way that Buddhist monks create a Mandala out of sand

so basically they spend a ton of time just working on creating beautiful mandalas out of sand

and at the very end they wipe it away

and essentially that's the way the persona is

you spend a long time creating the persona and having it through life

and at the end of life you'll have to wipe it away anyway

but just know that it was never real in the first place

it was always just dust in the wind

and so always keep a level of detachment

otherwise you can get very attached to something that isn't real or permanent

but just because something isn't real or substantial doesn't mean that it doesn't have practical function out here in the world

it is absolutely core to your ability to function in the social matrix to have a persona

so what I recommend is just enjoy the process ofcreating your persona

and always make it in such a way that it makes life easier for you

anyway that's all I have for now

Things Only Adults Notice In Mary Poppins - Duration: 8:08.

Mary Poppins is one of the most beloved movies of all time, with charming characters and

catchy musical numbers that have entertained generations of viewers.

Don't get caught up in the nostalgia, though.

If you re-watch it closely as an adult, though, you might be surprised to see that the movie

is actually a little bit darker than you remember.

Here are the things that only adults notice in Mary Poppins.

The gig economy of 1910

Bert seems to be everywhere.

We see him at the beginning of the film, performing as a one man band for spare change, but he

also has side hustles as a chimney sweep, sidewalk chalk artist, and kite salesman.

When you watch this movie as a kid, you might envy Bert's nomadic lifestyle, but as an adult,

he raises some questions.

Is he just a free spirit who can't be shackled to a traditional job?

Or is he taking on all this extra work because he's having trouble making ends meet?

To a lot of us, Bert's an all-too relatable character.

Plenty of grown-ups know the struggle of living paycheck to paycheck and the hardship of trying

to find gainful employment in a troubled economy.

Still, whatever the reasons, you definitely have to admire his work ethic.

Suffragette city

On the one hand, Mrs. Banks is probably the most famous suffragette since Susan B. Anthony.

It's admirable that she's seen marching for women's rights, especially since the

movie was released in 1964, when the Women's Liberation movement was just getting started.

On the other hand, she doesn't actually seem to follow through on any of her feminist

principles.

"I'd love to stay but I have to dress for my rally in Hampsted.

Winfried it is my wish that you be present.

...oh yes George, of course."

That admirable activism played for laughs, and we often see Mrs. Banks deferring to her

husband, downplaying her own intelligence in order to appease him.

She doesn't even seem to take an active role in raising her children, leaving Mr. Banks

in charge of hiring nannies for Jane and Michael.

Fortunately, the movie delivered a role model in Mary Poppins herself, but it seems like

a missed opportunity to not have Mrs. Banks be a strong character, too.

The worst accent ever

This one is probably noticeable to children who grew up watching the movie in the United

Kingdom, but for most American kids Bert probably seems like a totally believable Englishman

with a cockney accent.

Once you're an adult, however, you realize that no one in real life talks like Bert.

"beautiful, ain't it… a typical English countryside as painted by a true and lovin'

hand"

Bert's horrendous accent has been one of the movie's most memorable flaws since its release,

and even the actor who played him, Dick Van Dyke, acknowledges how awful it was.

In 2017, he received BAFTA's Brittania award, and used his acceptance speech to apologize

for what he called "the most atrocious cockney accent in the history of cinema."

It's not all his fault, though.

While Van Dyke is American, he said that none of the British people working on the film,

including Julie Andrews, ever mentioned it, so he never realized just how terrible it

was.

The Secret Origin of Mary Poppins

As far as we know, Mary Poppins wasn't bitten by a radioactive nanny, and we don't think

she put a spoonful of sugar into the super soldier serum, so where did she get her super-powers?

Are magical nannies just a common thing in the world of the movie?

Is…

Is Mary Poppins a witch?

That might explain her clearly enchanted items like the bottomless carpetbag and the magical

tape measure, and also why she doesn't seem to think that anything she's doing is out

of the ordinary.

It's actually a little frightening when you think about it.

Mary worked her way into the Banks household by blowing away all the other applicants with

a gust of wind.

Just think of how much damage she could cause if she ever decided to use her powers for

evil.

Who is Uncle Albert?

To kids, Uncle Albert is a fun character, but we have a lot of questions.

For starters, he seems to be well-known to Mary and to Bert, but it's not clear if he

actually is anyone's uncle.

Even stranger, he suffers from a contagious affliction that causes him to float to the

ceiling when he laughs too much, of which Mary does not approve.

While his ailment is pretty comical to kids, adults can obviously see that Uncle Albert

is actually a tragic character.

He's very lonely, and when he's told that it's time for Mary and the kids to leave,

he's completely crushed and reduced to tears.

Also… is he actually anybody's uncle?

London by gaslighting

There are a few scenes where we see that Mary Poppins isn't exactly the good-natured nanny

she appears to be.

She makes Uncle Albert cry and then leaves him depressed and sobbing on the floor.

She also gaslights the kids when they attempt to reminisce over the wonderful day they had

with Bert in his sidewalk picture.

She acts like the adventure never took place, and gets a bit aggressive when Jane tries

to jar her memory.

"A respectable person like me in a horse race, ...how dare you suggest such a thing."

When the kids continue to insist that they did, indeed, venture into a magical world

where they participated in a horse race on carousel animals, Mary threatens to call the

police if they don't stop talking about it.

Even if she's just doing it to prevent the kids from telling anyone about her magic powers,

but it's pretty cruel to act like they're delusional any time they try to talk about

it.

That's messed up, Mary.

"First of all I would like to make one thing quite clear.

Yes.

I never explain anything."

The world's worst bank

Mr. Banks tries to show his children the world by bringing them to work with him at the bank,

but he gets a little bit more than he bargained for.

To call the bank's practices shady would be an understatement.

Mr. Banks tries to convince Michael to open up a bank account rather than giving his money

to less fortunate people and his boss, the chairman, straight up commits a robbery.

He demands that Michael "invest" his money, and tries to grab it from his hands, not stopping

even when Michael starts screaming.

It goes without saying that this is a pretty terrible bank, and the customers who are present

when Michael's practically mugged agree.

They all demand to withdraw their money, sending the bank into a full-on riot and leading to

Mr. Banks being fired.

How many kids watching this movie grew up thinking that banks were terrifying creep-factories,

out to steal all their cash?

Good thing we don't have to worry about that in the real world.

It's grim in London

Mary Poppins is a film full of whimsical delights, with singing, dancing, magic, and bright,

colorful characters.

For older eyes, however, it's easy to see that the London of the movie is actually pretty

dismal.

Everything there is dark and drab, and frankly, it looks like a terrifying place to raise

a child.

The glimpses we get of London look like a post-apocalyptic wasteland, rather than a

bustling city.

If that's where they're growing up, it's no surprise that Jane and Michael often seem

so unhappy.

Thankfully, Mary was there to brighten things up a little, but what's going to happen to

to the kids once she's is gone?

How long can their happiness last without her?

Will their dreary surroundings plunge them into an existential crisis without a magical

nanny to lift their spirits?

Bert's underrated

The star of Mary Poppins is, well Mary Poppins, but let's be real: Bert is the true MVP.

He's the one who suggests that a reluctant Mary to take the kids on an adventure into

a sidewalk chalk picture, and he's the one who drew it in the first place.

Bert is also there when Jane and Michael meet Uncle Albert and laugh themselves into the

air.

He also brings the kids to the rooftops of London, and even gets his fellow chimney sweeps

to put on a show for them.

Throughout the film, he's the one encouraging Mary to use her powers to entertain the children,

and he's even the one who talks to Mr. Banks and makes him realize that he has emotionally

neglected Jane and Michael for years.

Thanks to their conversation, Mr. Banks becomes a better father and husband.

We might even go as far as saying he's the real star here.

Then again, the movie probably wouldn't have been as memorable if it was just called Bert.

Mr. Banks: Murderer?

By the end of the movie, Mary Poppins has left, but it turns out to not be such a tragedy

because Mr. Banks has been fired.

That might not sound like good news, but because of his termination, he decides to finally

spend time with his family.

It's a heartwarming moment.

As an adult, though, you might be a little worried about how the Banks family is going

to make ends meet.

Fortunately, we soon find out that Mr. Banks' boss is dead, and Mr. Banks is being re-hired

to take his place.

The family's future is secured, and no more concern is necessary!

Until you remember that Mr. Banks is actually responsible for his boss's untimely fate,

since he passed on while laughing at a joke Mr. Banks told him.

"Father come back!

Daddy, daddy come down.

Daddy come back!"

At least he went happy, but think of the lesson it teaches!

Just remember, kids: don't laugh too hard… or else.
