Waching daily Jan 30 2018

Oum.

Huh?

Do I...

look like a pregnant woman?

Don't be silly.

Well,

around 4-5 months pregnant.

Oum.

It's true.

Look at yourself.

Wait and see.

If they have this alumni party again next year.

I will come back pretty and

slender that all of them gasp in awe.

We'll see.

Good.

So tomorrow,

we go the gym.

We already went there today.

Nah.

Ya.

You must go to the gym everyday.

So you get slimmer quickly.

Let's take a rain check.

I'm tired.

How about this?

Why don't you find the activity

that can burn your calories?

Well…

in your bed…

burn your calories while you are in bed.

That.

How was that?

You like big boobs so much, right?

That was your penalty.

I really like it

when you are mad at me.

Why?

What we just had was so fierce.

You fool.

Anyway,

how is Korya?

She was upset by Ton.

He didn't defend her

but laughed at her.

Ton is slow.

He probably didn't realize what to do.

And it's almost

their 10 years anniversary.

Ton doesn't seem to remember the date.

What about our anniversary date?

Can you remember?

Our anniversary is April 22nd.

Your birthday is June 21st.

The first time we met is

on the 1st of May which is the labor day.

Our first kiss is May 5th.

And we decided to date on that day.

and the day we had sizzling sex is…

Stop.

Too much details.

I don't want you to be mad at me.

If I'm mad,

just make up with me.

You like me to make up with you?

Be my guest.

No.

Not again.

No.

Hey!

The blanket is large enough for two.

Share it with me.

If you want to share the blanket,

come close to me

not on the edge of the bed like that.

No.

It's uncomfortable to be close to each other.

You are calling me fat again.

No.

I mean…

after you got back from the alumni party,

you haven't talked to me.

So I feel uneasy to be near you.

I'm not gonna talk to you

not until you apologize to me.

What?

I didn't say that

you were fat like a pregnant woman.

Be reasonable.

But you laughed at me.

I didn't laugh to make fun of you.

I laughed because it was funny.

It was funny.

I'm sorry.

From now on,

if anyone says that you are fat.

I will not laugh again.

Good.

Don't laugh at me.

But defend and

scold back to that person.

Understood?

Okay.

Let's turn in.

Ton,

Huh?

are you busy next Friday?

Um.

Next Friday?

Next Friday…

I don't think so.

Really?

Um.

What's the matter?

No.

Nothing.

Huh?

Good night.

Sleep now.

Why are you giving me that look?

What are you holding?

A bolster.

You have me right here.

Why do you choose to hold the bolster instead?

What the hell?

She flips out right after waking up?

Fatso!

Not yet.

I need to take a photo first.

Do you want me to hold it?

No.

Can I eat now?

Not yet.

Not yet, Ton.

Ton.

Be careful.

When you are done,

don't forget to sweep the floor.

Okay.

Then, do the washing.

Woah.

Are these football shorts?

You are enjoying it.

Yummy, right?

Are you done cleaning the bathroom?

Um.

Then, come brush Bone.

Nah.

I'm so tired.

I need a break.

Okay.

Bone,

let daddy brush you.

Ton,

let's play a game.

No.

Okay.

Let's play together, Bone.

Let's play a quiz game.

First question.

What is my favorite color?

Cream.

Incorrect.

I like burgundy red.

What does it look like?

The dark red that

looks sophisticated like

the lipstick I like to wear.

How come you can't remember this?

Now, your turn to ask me.

What do I like to eat?

Easy.

Minced pork with Thai basil,

top with a sunny side up egg with runny yolk

and 3 chilies.

Oh.

You really know me.

What is my waist size?

43 inches?

No, just 34.

Ah,

your waist is 34 but

your butt is definitely 43.

No.

No.

Not correct?

No, you should have shut up already.

I shut up now.

What's my shoe size?

9 UK / 10 US

Your left foot is slightly

bigger than your right foot

because you have a corn on your big toe.

The shoe brand that compliments

your feet is NIKE.

Because it makes your feet look longer.

Impressive.

You even know about my corn.

Can I get a new pair of shoes?

No.

We are short of money this month.

Next question.

It's not over yet?

Last question.

Okay.

When is our anniversary?

What date is it?

Ton,

we've been together for almost 10 years now.

You cannot remember the anniversary date?

It's just an anniversary.

But it's an important day.

Everyday that

we are together is important and good.

No.

The anniversary date is the most important.

Don't flip out.

So, what date is it?

No.

You figure it out yourself.

Hey,

are you mad?

Don't be mad.

What date is it?

Figure it out yourself.

Come on.

I remember it this time.

If you are my boyfriend,

you must remember our anniversary date.

Holy shit,

you can't remember?

Even the third person like me knows it.

Harrie Lavreysen // Preparing for the World Championships - Duration: 3:52.

Harrie Lavreysen, 20 years of age.

He has only been doing Track Cycling for two years.

He used to be a BMX-racer.

In the beginning of 2017 I was hoping to qualify myself for the World Championships.

I was training hard to try to get to the level of the top guys in The Netherlands,

so I would qualify myself for the World Championships.

I ended up winning two Silver medals.

It was a total surprise.

I had no idea what I was doing there.

Every time I look back at the videos from then..

my tactics didn't make any sense.

I switched from BMX to Track Cycling three years ago.

Before I moved to Papendal, I had never really heard about Track Cycling.

I didn't really know the sport.

When I made the switch, I didn't even know the disciplines.

I knew about the sprint, 1 vs 1.

Keirin, I had no idea.

So it was a pretty big change.

Everything was completely different.

The first year I trained with Steve McEwen in the talent team.

After that I had surgery on both my shoulders.

So my shoulders bothered me for another 6 months or so.

I took the time to recover.

After that I started training with René Wolff in the national team.

That's when I started to make big steps.

I still need to sleep with my arms in a sling.

So I can't dislocate my shoulders when I'm asleep.

I don't have any problems with my shoulders while riding.

In case of a crash, I thought myself to crash like this:

to make sure I don't extend my arms.

I can't do everything in the gym,

but luckily I don't miss anything to become a good track sprinter.

I feel like there are still so many things I can improve on.

I did well at the World Championships..

I also managed to win three WorldCups.

But during those raced I switched handlebars,

changed my position on the bike.

I can still learn a lot about tactics.

I'm definitely not done yet.

I'd like to make a lot of more progress in Track Cycling.

The World Championship will be held here in Apeldoorn in a month.

We, The Netherlands, finished 2nd two years in a row in the teamsprint.

With the big group of sprinters we have now we should be capable to win.

People will see me as the guy who surprised everyone by winning two Silver medals last year.

Maybe they will have high expectations of me.

But I'm just gonna do my own thing..

and we'll see what that will bring me.

I'm hoping to win a medal.

KickStart, Sugar Detox, Real Food, Whole30 Meal Prep Hacks to Save Time - Duration: 3:34.

You're not gonna believe how much time these simple hacks can save you during

meal prep! And hi! I'm Laura and I want to welcome you if you're new to this

channel. In today's video I'm gonna show you some of my shortcuts when I'm doing

meal prep for our Family Kickstart program. These shortcuts are also perfect

for Whole 30 and 21-day sugar detox programs because the idea of all these

whole food programs is to eat more fresh fruits, eliminate grains, gluten, dairy, and

sugars. One of the things most people notice is that they spend a lot more

time in the kitchen. And let me tell you, there are some simple things that you

can do to speed up the meal prep process .I love the Family Kickstart Program because

it's family friendly, and the recipes are not far from what kids are used to

eating. And that means, that I'm able to cook one meal for the whole family -at

all meals- and if there's something you need to know about me, is that I refuse

to be a short-order cook. Since being prepared with your food is one of the

most important parts of your success -with any program- I know that if you're

able to save time, you're gonna stick with it longer, and make the meals that

you have planned. I've printed out my weekly shopping list from the Family

Kickstart Program here, but all you have to do is write down what you need from your

plan. If I have a really busy week, I'm gonna look at my shopping list and try

to find ways to save time with prep. Instead of buying a whole cauliflower I

might buy it already riced or cut into florets. This saves me a lot of prep time

-and cleanup! And price wise, the difference isn't much. There are many

ways you can save time when it comes to produce and prep. Find spiralized veggies

instead of spiralizing your own, frozen peppers for fajitas instead of

whole peppers are all time savers in the kitchen. I also buy frozen butternut

squash cubes and sweet potatoes for weeks that I just can't prep one more

thing! Simply put: if it's going to help you eat

real food, it doesn't matter if it's fresh or frozen. When it comes to fruit,

there isn't much that you can do except wash your berries and preserve them like

in this video, or maybe buy pre-sliced apples that they're ready to grab and go.

One other thing to consider is buying frozen fruit. Many frozen fruits are

picked at its ripeness and after they thaw out they are just a sweet and

delicious! Another big time-saver in the kitchen is

to buy a cooked rotisserie chicken instead of roasting your own. It can be the base

for a chicken salad, burrito bowls, and many other meals. The truth is is that

with any program, you're going to be spending a little bit more time in the

kitchen than normal; so, if you can set yourself up for success with a few

shortcuts, do it! I'm going to link my shopping list right below that are part of the

Family Kickstart Program. And again, it's built specifically for busy families to

help them eliminate processed foods and sugars from their diets. I'm also going

to link the playlist for other meal prep videos if you're doing any kind of Whole 30

or detox program to help you save lots of time in the kitchen. If you love

easy recipes and helpful videos like this one breast of this YouTube channel

and subscribe! A new recipe video comes out every single week.

See you next time!

Gandalf vs Saruman | The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) Movie Clip 12 - Duration: 4:47.

Smoke rises from the Mountain of Doom.

The hour grows late.

And Gandalf the Grey rides to Isengard...

...seeking my counsel.

For that is why you have come, is it not?

My old friend.

Saruman.

- You are sure of this? - Beyond any doubt.

So the ring of power has been found.

All these long years, it was in the Shire.

- Under my very nose. - Yet you did not have the wit to see it.

Your love of the halfling's leaf has clearly slowed your mind.

But we still have time. Time enough to counter Sauron if we act quickly.

Time?

What time do you think we have?

Sauron has regained much of his former strength.

He cannot yet take physical form...

...but his spirit has lost none of its potency.

Concealed within his fortress, the Lord of Mordor sees all.

His gaze pierces cloud, shadow, earth and flesh.

You know of what I speak, Gandalf.

A great eye, lidless, wreathed in flame.

The eye of Sauron.

He is gathering all evil to him.

Very soon, he'll have summoned an army...

...great enough for an assault upon Middle-earth.

You know this?

How?

I have seen it.

A palantir is a dangerous tool, Saruman.

Why?

Why should we fear to use it?

They are not all accounted for, the lost seeing-stones.

We do not know who else may be watching.

The hour is later than you think.

Sauron's forces are already moving.

The Nine have left Minas Morgul.

The Nine?

They crossed the river Isen on Midsummer's Eve...

...disguised as riders in black.

- They've reached the Shire? - They will find the ring.

And kill the one who carries it.

Frodo!

You did not seriously think that a hobbit could contend with the will of Sauron?

There are none who can.

Against the power of Mordor...

...there can be no victory.

We must join with him, Gandalf.

We must join with Sauron.

It would be wise, my friend.

Tell me... ...friend...

...when did Saruman the Wise abandon reason for madness?

I gave you the chance of...

...aiding me willingly...

...but you have elected the way of pain!

Thomas the Tank Engine | How It Changed My Life [Musicanima] - Duration: 7:59.

If I had to take a guess as to the song I heard most when I was young,

it would have to be the Thomas the Tank Engine Theme Song.

The reason, of course, is because I loved that show.

I watched it incessantly.

I loved trains.

They just amazed me when I was young.

And I had the great fortune to live only a couple hundred feet from a train track.

When I would go out my front door and look down the street,

there was this stone arched bridge that the trains would pass over.

Just seeing that as a kid really opened my imagination.

And then, of course, when I started watching Thomas the Tank Engine,

my love of trains and my love of that show just grew exponentially.

I want to reflect on this song not so much because the song in and of itself changed my life,

but rather because of what this song represents for me.

What it really represents is adventure

– external adventure.

That's why this song is really a perfect epilogue to Yellow Submarine.

It's the opposite side of the same coin.

Whereas Yellow Submarine is more about my internal adventurousness,

– about expanding my internal imagination –

what the Thomas the Tank Engine Theme Song represents is me being externally adventurous –

going out into the world and seeing new places.

The main thing that I think of whenever I hear the Thomas the Tank Engine Theme Song

is my mom taking my brothers and I on what she called

"Adventure Treks."

When we were kids, we would go on them all the time and we loved them.

My mom would come to my brothers and I and just say:

"Alright boys get ready, we're going on an adventure trek!"

And every time we'd respond the same way.

We'd say: "Where are we going?"

"Where are we going?"

And she would never tell us.

She would say what we needed to get dressed in and she would tell us what we needed to bring,

but after that we would get in the car and we'd just drive,

and the whole time our anticipation would just build and build until we finally got wherever we were going.

It was such an incredible thing to experience as a kid.

I am so thankful to my mom for taking us on these Adventure Treks.

I got to see new places that I never knew existed – that I would have never dreamed existed.

I got to meet new people.

I mean, we went on so many of them.

I can't recall them all, but we'd go to playgrounds,

we'd go to museums,

we'd go to other towns.

She would take us all over the place and I have absolutely no doubt that I am who I am right now

in large part because of going on these Adventure Treks.

Now, one of my favorite places to go when I was a kid –

and this is where it ties into Thomas the Tank Engine –

is to a place called the Arcade and Attica Railroad.

Arcade and Attica is about an hour south of Buffalo, and it is a legitimate, genuine old steam engine.

My parents would take us there usually every fall and we'd just go on this

couple hour ride through the countryside.

And it was just magnificent to look out, to look out upon the world, look out on nature,

while sitting on a train being adventurous.

My favorite part about going to Arcade and Attica was, since this was a legitimate old steam engine,

you could go out on – not the caboose – but this open car at the back

and get all the grime and soot from the smokestack in your hair.

Of course we as kids lived that.

I'm sure my parent's didn't love it as much,

but it was real,

it was genuine,

and it was so much fun – it's something I'll always remember.

Now, one specific Adventure Trek that really meant more to me than any other

was something that was completely spur of the moment.

It was completely serendipitous.

It was probably right around the time of my– I don't know – 7th or 8th birthday.

My mom and I are driving around and we're driving near this train track that's pretty close to our house,

and there's this train stopped right up top near the bridge.

So my mom pulls over so we can look at this train because it's just magnificent to me.

We get out of the car, we kind of walk up along the side a little bit,

and we're getting closer and closer but staying well back because this train was stopped.

All of a sudden, out of nowhere, the window to the train opens and the conductor

– the engineer – sticks his head out the window and says:

"Hey kid, you like trains?"

Well, of course I was flabbergasted and I was too shy to say anything.

But thankfully my mom spoke up for me and she said:

"He loves trains and his birthday's in a few days."

Almost without missing a beat, the engineer said:

"Hey, why don't you come aboard, I can show the controls?"

Now I was floored and I'm sure my mom was a little reticent, but she trusted,

and ultimately I went up and got up on this train and got to go in the front cabin,

and got to see how the train was operated – all the buttons, all the controls.

It was incredible.

It was, by far, the best birthday present I have ever had in my life.

And that's all because of my mom

– all because she was so devoted to me and my brothers,

and always wanted to take us on adventures

– always wanted to take us out into the world and get us to experience things we had never experienced before,

see new places we had never seen before, and meet new people who we had never met before.

Thanks to my mom, I went on countless Adventure Treks when I was a kid.

and because of that – also thanks to my mom –

I've been going on Adventure Trek's ever since.

That's really, to me, what the Thomas the Tank Engine Theme Song represents.

It represents adventure.

It represents travel.

It represents going out into the world, and seeing new places and meeting new people,

and forming new experiences,

building new memories that you had never had before.

I have so many good memories of these Adventure Treks,

and I look forward to the rest of my life

going on countless more.

Thank you for sharing a few minutes with me

and allowing me to share my love of Thomas the Tank Engine with you,

and to share some of my experiences –

some of the Adventure Treks I've gone on.

What about you?

Do you love trains?

Do you love Thomas the Tank Engine?

Do you have kids?

Do they love Thomas the Tank Engine?

But even more than that, what are some of the Adventure Treks you've gone on?

What are some of the memories you've made or places you've seen

that you couldn't believe existed?

What are some of the adventures you have gone on?

If you feel so compelled, in the comments below, please share some of your Adventures.

[Epilogue]

I'm going to talk about Thomas the Tank Engine...

and a helicopter flies over.

It's Harold!

Yeah!

[Laughter]

Which one was your favorite?

Toby.

Toby.

Yeah!

And Harold Helicopter.

Do you remember the song?

Well sort of...

[Sung] (Poorly)

Said Harold Helicopter to our Percy:

"You are slow."

"The railway is out of date, and not much use you know."

But Percy and his.....

And they beat the helicopter

on the old branch line!

Nice.

Yeah!

[Laughter]

Top 3 Things To Include On Your Website - Duration: 4:58.

When I got started I had no idea what I was doing.

But it did turn into a business and I'm going to show you how to do it for yourself.

The first step to setting up a business or branding yourself online is to make sure that

you have a website.

This is your online profile and your resume to the world.

There's tons of different ways that you can do this but no matter what way you choose

they should all include the same information or at least the basics you need a central

location where others can come to find out more about you.

And it should tell them who you are what you do and how they can contact you.

Stay tuned until the end for a special bonus.

This is going to be your name, bio, location.

You're going to give them information about yourself.

If you have a product or service that you offer, you're going to make sure an list that

in your website or on your Website so that people know what it is that you offer.

And, last you want to have a way for them to contact you.

So this can be through email, phone.

I would also include my social handles so people can reach out to you on social media

and contact you that way and that also helps build awareness for your brand.

When they're contacting you off of your Web site and learning more about you.

I have a lot of people that I follow across all the platforms and they normally will follow

me back as well.

This website or your building is essentially just an online digital resume.

But ultimately people are coming to find out how you can benefit them in order to stick

around and either sign up or buy whatever it is they want to know what benefit are you

bringing to them.

If it's the product that you sell or a service that you provide they want to know what it

is and that's why it's really important to target the right audience so when they land

on your page is people that are actually looking for the information that you provide.

It's going to benefit them that they're going to want to invest their time or their money

into the next step of the process and go along this journey with you.

That's what you're doing is building a story behind your brand with your website and your

content.

If you think about it when you go to get a job or you've had a job interview and they

say bring your resume is because they want to see you like what you've done what you've

accomplished.

What are your skills, your expertise, and essentially like if you can benefit their

organization that's why they look and say you know what is your objective of being here.

So everyone has that same one to grow and whatever they put on there.

But honestly I would put yourself into your website and really give them a look at who

you are and what you do and show them a person behind that business that brand that face

and a personality.

Should I say because people really love stories and they love to follow people who have a

story.

Because a lot of times they can relate.

And as people change and go through their life they find people that they can kind of

relate to and they follow them.

You know I'm sure that's why some of you follow me and that's why I say just make sure they

are always building your brand and your relationship with these people it's not just you know buy

my product buy my product it's always providing value first which is why I said they want

to know who you are when they come to your website and they also want to know how you

can benefit them at the end of the day which is what you need to be conveying in your message

to them.

Now you know how to set up your website and I'm telling you the cheapest, easiest, and

fastest ways to get started.

So this is how to set up a website.

Going through that process in this tutorial and again if you're having trouble getting

started it could be because you don't have all of the pieces of the puzzle.

I'm giving you all of this in a nice checklist that you can follow along with below.

I'm Brandi of www.BlogginBrandi.com where you can find tons of free resources to help

you brand your business.

Thanks for watching.

I'll see you in the next video.

How to Get Qualified Leads with Video Marketing - Duration: 3:17.

- Hands down, the best way to drive leads

straight to you, without ever selling.

(beep)

Without a doubt, the best video marketing strategy

I implemented in my business last year

was the #100in30.

It all started when I was chatting with my husband

about some different ways to promote an upcoming product.

And he recommended I get on the phone with some people.

I was like, duh.

He was like "You need to talk to 100 people".

Of course, this made total sense.

I had been pulling away from ads, funnels,

and anything on the less personal side

of my business for a long time.

Last summer in June, I hosted the Social Summer Party,

that was all about getting social on social,

using what I called the co-factor.

Connect, communicate, start a conversation,

and build your community.

So chatting it up with 100 people was an obvious next step.

So I challenged myself to chat with 100 people

over the course of 30 days and boom,

the #100in30 was born.

I was able to not only have amazing conversations

with my audience, but I was able to fill my pipeline

with over $18,000.00 in sales (cash register ringing)

without ever pitching or directly selling.

The calls were pitch-free and genuinely all about helping.

It was real conversations that created real change,

but converted it into real cash.

It was a win-win and I love creating

win-wins in my business.

Here's what some people had to say.

Here are some of the benefits of implementing

this marketing strategy.

You can gain exposure and get noticed through the noise.

I was able to discover my audience's true pain points.

I filled my pipeline full of qualified leads.

I was able to build new relationships

and strengthen existing relationships.

I got tons of ideas for new content, courses and freebies.

Now you tell me that's not a win-win.

I could spend hours to days trying to implement

a marketing tactic, or strategy that felt gross to me

and resulted in less hair on my head

and frustrated prospects who unsubscribed,

never to be heard from again.

Or, I could lean back on my common sense,

and what my intuition told me was an amazing idea.

It made me feel so good, it made my audience feel good.

Can you feel the love?

Can you see the difference?

I used my existing tools to automate what I could.

I created a system, and then I set out to promote

the #100in30 everywhere I possibly could.

And it felt great to promote, because I was extending

an offer of genuine help without a hard pitch.

I loved it so much, I'm doing it again in February.

February's all about falling

The Stunning Transformation Of Pippa Middleton - Duration: 2:48.

Pippa Middleton first entered the spotlight on the tails of her sister's royal fairytale,

but the younger Middleton sis has worked hard to earn success on her own terms.

Here is her stunning transformation.

Middleton had a very normal childhood.

She's spoken about the family meals and expectations put on her and her siblings, saying that basically,

they had to be members of the clean plate club.

She told Daily Mail, "As children...we always ate what our parents

ate.

My mother and father took the view, and I agree, that you don't need to make different

food for children."

And if she didn't like her dinner, tough luck.

She said, "We had to stay at the table until we had

eaten everything...no exceptions."

Anti-socialite

Middleton hails from a family with money.

And, with that accompanying lifestyle, and her sister's royal status, she's familiar

with unflattering assumptions about her personal life.

She told Daily Mail in 2016, "People see me as someone privileged who has

used my position to advantage; that I don't really work, that I am a socialite...and that

I'm a party girl without any substance."

But according to Daily Mail, Middleton has worked hard, having earned an athletic scholarship

for secondary school and studied English Lit at Edinburgh University.

At her big sister's royal wedding in 2011,

many would say Pippa stole the show with her highly flattering bridesmaid's dress.

And to this day, Middleton remains bewildered.

When asked by Daily Mail about the fame and chatter her dress caused, Middleton says,

"I was surprised and still don't understand it."

In 2011, Middleton was forced into a media

swarm that overwhelmed the then 27-year-old.

She told The Telegraph, "It is a bit startling to achieve global recognition

(if that's the right word) on account of your sister, your brother-in-law and your bottom."

As time went on, the focus only intensified.

In 2014, she told Today she's even experienced bullying, saying,

"I have felt publicly bullied a little bit, despite you know when I read things that clearly

aren't true" "it's quite difficult because I'm just picking

my way and trying to live a life like any 30 year old."

Having a royal sister is a challenge.

But Pippa and Kate's sisterly bond won't be broken.

Middleton told Today, "We can sort of be normal with each other,

treat each other normally.

And that's sort of kept us all, you know, affixed to the ground."

These days, Middleton's carving her own path, becoming a published writer.

In 2016, the 33-year-old released her new cookbook, Heartfelt, which focuses on heart-healthy

meals and also benefits the British Heart Foundation.

But for Middleton, wellness begins at home.

She says, "I heart family.

My mother always says preparing a healthy and tasty meal for the family is one of life's

greatest pleasures — and pressures."

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo — Breaking Convention - Duration: 15:42.

Hi, I'm Michael.

This is Lessons from the Screenplay.

It's been over six years since "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" was released,

and it remains one of my favorite David Fincher films.

It's an intriguing murder mystery,

as well as a story about two unfamiliar characters with a unique relationship.

But the film is also interesting from a structural perspective.

As Fincher said of the script:

"There was really no way to take what Larson had written

and get it into three acts.

And so we had to make our peace with the idea of a five act structure."

In my last video on The Avengers,

I looked at the elements of a classical five-act structure.

But despite having five acts, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" doesn't fit that model.

Instead, it's full of abnormalities,

where the subplot is the focus of much of the film,

and at times feels like it swaps protagonists.

This is why it was the first film I thought of when I heard Fincher's recent quote,

where he implied that Marvel films are "lassoed and hogtied by three acts."

As I said in my last video, I have become obsessed with this statement,

and today I want to explore its deeper meaning.

To see how Marvel films are constrained by three acts and narrative conventions,

and how "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" subverts them.

To dissect the anatomy of an act,

examining how a film can break the rules and follow them at the same time.

...And reveal the effort put into setting up

the Fincher trilogy that never came to be.

Let's take a look at The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

When David Fincher implied that the Marvel Cinematic Universe was

"lassoed and hogtied by three acts,"

he wasn't talking about the literal number of acts.

He was referring to the fact that most Marvel films have to be essentially the same.

They need to be widely accessible

so they can reach a large enough audience to make money,

which historically means following certain narrative conventions.

I've identified three conventions in particular that I've found in almost all Marvel films,

and which Fincher likes to subvert.

The first convention is that nearly the entire film is about a single, clear protagonist.

Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange:

there is a single, clear protagonist driving the plot forward.

Subplots for love stories and supporting characters exist,

but they take a backseat.

Second, these subplots are resolved just before the climax or immediately after.

This allows all the loose ends to come together and be tied up nicely in the end.

Usually this means the subplots have their own climax

just before the protagonist journeys on to the final battle...

...or they resolve right after, but quickly so the film can end as soon as possible.

And finally, the third convention is that they closely follow

Syd Field's three act paradigm.

We meet a hero who wants something but can't have it.

They make a difficult choice to go after it.

The struggle turns out to be harder than they expected.

They make another choice to become the person they need to be.

They defeat the bad guy.

Movie over.

Almost all films follow these conventions.

A nd to be clear, a film isn't automatically bad because it follows these conventions,

nor is a film automatically good just because it breaks them.

But as Fincher implies in his quote,

when you have to tick all these boxes there is only so much room to play around.

So what does it look like when you don't tick all the boxes?

Well, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" does have a clear protagonist in Mikael Blomkvist,

but a significant portion of the film is spent on Lisbeth's story.

The subplots of the film certainly do not resolve just before

or immediately after the climax of the main plot.

And while you could probably apply the three-act structure to the film—

as you can with almost all films—

it certainly does not fit tidily within the walls of Syd Field's paradigm.

By breaking these conventions,

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" can tell a complex story with multiple plot threads,

letting us get to know a main character other than the protagonist in a much deeper way.

So does the film not have any structure whatsoever?

Of course it does.

Despite subverting the three act paradigm,

screenwriter Steven Zaillian made sure that each individual act

contained the essential elements of story.

In his book Into the Woods: A Five-Act Journey Into Story, John Yorke writes:

"Fractal theory dictates that every act will contain all the essential elements of story:

protagonist, antagonist, inciting incident,

journey, crisis, climax and, occasionally, resolution."

Every act in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" has each of these elements,

telling a story unto itself while playing a unique role in the overall film.

So let's dissect each act to see how they use the essential elements of story

to achieve this.

Act One: What will Mikael do now that his life is ruined?

This act's function is to set-up the story.

We meet the characters and learn what the film is about.

The protagonist, Mikael Blomkvist,

has just been sued for libel and lost, so his desire/journey is to hide from the world.

"I'm going to go home. Crawl under the duvet for a week."

But then he gets a phone call—

the inciting incident—where he is enticed to meet Henrik Vanger.

Henrik is the antagonist of this act, not because he's a bad guy,

but because he's the one blocking Mikael's desire to hide from the world.

The crisis comes when Henrik asks Mikael to solve a forty-year-old murder mystery,

and the climax is when Henrik offers Mikael the one thing he wants most...

Henrik: "Hans-Erik Wennerstrom."

...revenge on the man who has just ruined Mikael's life.

The resolution is that Mikael agrees to try to solve Henrik's mystery.

Act One is a pretty standard first act, like you would find in most films.

Act two, however, is where things get more complex.

Act Two: Can Mikael uncover something new about Harriet's disappearance?

The second act has to keep the main plot engaging,

while also spending half its time on something completely unrelated.

So how does the screenwriter achieve this?

He makes essentially makes the second act have two protagonists,

with their elements of story running in parallel.

The protagonist in the main plot is still Mikael,

and his antagonist is now the mysterious past that holds the secrets he's after.

The protagonist of the subplot is Lisbeth,

who is forced to report to a new guardian, Bjurman, her antagonist.

Mikael's inciting incident comes when he speaks to the retired officer

who was assigned to Harriet's case.

This sets up Mikael's desire/journey: answer the questions the officer never could

by collecting new evidence and getting to know the Vanger family.

Lisbeth's inciting incident comes when someone tries to steal her laptop and it ends up destroyed.

Her desire/journey is to be able to control her own money,

but as a ward of the state the only way to get it is through Bjurman,

who she soon learns is not shy about abusing his power in the most horrific way.

The crisis of Mikael's plot comes when he flips through the old photos of Harriet

and realizes she was afraid of someone.

And the climax is when he realizes what the numbers and names in the diary mean.

Mikael has uncovered something new.

The crisis of Lisbeth's plot comes when Bjurman takes his abuse to a new extreme.

And the climax is when she gets her brutal revenge.

Now that Mikael knows he's not wasting his time with this investigation,

the resolution of the act comes as he asks for a research assistant.

This second act has two stories going on at once,

one that moves the main plot forward

and another that provides a detailed portrait of Lisbeth—our other main character,

who has yet enter the main story.

But in the third act, that will change.

Act 3: Will Lisbeth get along with Mikael and be able to help him?

In the Syd Field "paradigm" model of a screenplay, act three is where the story ends.

But in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,

the third act is where our main characters meet for the first time.

The protagonist is Mikael, and this time Lisbeth is the antagonist of the act.

She is the unknown quantity, the person who must be convinced.

The inciting incident comes as Mikael learns Lisbeth investigated him,

violating his privacy by doing so.

Mikael's desire is to understand why Harriet was tracking the murders

of young women in her diary, and asks Lisbeth to help.

"I want you to help me catch a killer of women."

His journey involves looking for more evidence,

as Lisbeth tracks down new information about the women who were killed.

And all the while, they are figuring out their relationship.

The crisis comes when Mikael is shot at.

Someone is trying to scare him away.

This leads to the climax, where Lisbeth stitches him up and they begin a sexual relationship.

This resolution signifies them becoming partners.

"I like working with you."

"I like working with you too."

Act Four: Is there a connection between the Vanger corporation and the murders?

The fourth act contains what would be in the third act of a normal movie—

the final showdown with the antagonist.

Protagonist: Mikael.

Antagonist: Martin Vanger.

Inciting Incident:

Mikael and Lisbeth get permission to search the Vanger company's records.

Desire/Journey:

To find out if there is...

"Any connections between Vanger industries and the towns where the women were killed."

The Crisis: Mikael discovers that Martin is the killer, and is captured.

The Climax: Mikael is saved in the last moment by Lisbeth,

who chases Martin, causing him to die in a car crash.

Resolution: In the aftermath,

Mikael realizes that Harriet is still alive, and she is reunited with Henrik.

This plays like the end of a normal film, where the act answers its own dramatic question,

as well as the dramatic question of the main plot.

It feels like the film should be over, because if it followed convention, it would be.

But there are still several loose ends that need tying up.

So instead, we move in to the weirdest act..

Act Five: What will happen with Wennerstrom?

Slash, what will become of Lisbeth and Mikael?

In the fifth act, there are again two stories happening at once.

The one that is front-and-center is Lisbeth,

the protagonist, taking down Wennerstrom, the antagonist.

The inciting incident is when she hears Mikael say that

Wennerstrom probably won't get jail time for his crimes.

Her desire is to give him the punishment he deserves,

and her journey involves adopting a disguise, clever hacking,

and stealing billions of dollars form him.

The crisis comes when she successfully empties his bank accounts into her own,

and the climax comes when it's announced that Wennerstrom was executed by his mob affiliates.

Lisbeth's actions are fueled by her desire to see appropriate punishment be administered,

but it's also an expression of her feelings for Mikael,

which I think is the more moving story of this act.

Lisbeth, protagonist,

realizes she has feelings for Mikael, antagonist,

during the inciting incident, when he agrees to lend her fifty thousand dollars.

"Ok."

"Ok?"

It's the most anyone has ever trusted her.

"You want a coffee?"

Her desire/journey becomes to tell him how she feels.

After taking down Mikael's sworn enemy, she writes him a letter, and buys him a gift.

But the crisis comes when Lisbeth goes to give him the gift,

and sees that he's with Erika.

The climax is when she chooses to turn around and throws the present in the trash.

And the resolution:

heartbroken, she gets on her motorcycle, and rides off.

Each act of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" serves a unique function in the overall story,

and several acts contain story beats not found in conventional films.

But by making sure that each act has the essential elements,

it ensures that it's never just showing a series of events happening,

but rather, telling a story.

When reading the screenplay,

I noticed that the last line of the script was strangely prophetic,

when it explains that Lisbeth...

"climbs onto her Honda - starts it - and drives off -"

"Probably forever."

The unconventional structure of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"

wasn't there simply to provide interesting storytelling,

it had to set up important backstory for Lisbeth.

"Even though we're not getting into it in great detail in the first movie,

it has to inform everything that she does. We will get into it, eventually."

This is because everyone—the writer, the cast, even Fincher—

assumed this film was going to be part one of a trilogy.

The opening sequence contains imagery from all three of the stories.

Erika, Christer Malm, Bjurman, Armansky, Miriam, and Annika, Mikael's sister,

all had to be cast and appear in small roles

knowing they would be an important part of the next films.

Players in a complex trilogy poised to challenge convention, that would ultimately never be.

This, I think, is the last key to understanding Fincher's quote about Marvel.

When talking about signing on to do "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," Fincher said:

"I wasn't that interested in making another serial killer movie as much as

the studio was committed to the idea of a hard-R rated adult franchise.

And I thought: 'I've been waiting my whole career to hear this.'"

He wanted to turn the Dragon Tattoo trilogy into something

"thoughtful, adult, interesting, complex, and challenging."

But when it was released, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo made "only" $102 million.

Five months later, The Avengers would make $600 million.

Certainly, more determines the success of a film

than the conventionality of its narrative structure.

But as an audience, we have become so programmed to expect a three-act structure

and a tidy resolution,

that we often get uncomfortable when a story breaks that formula.

But when a story isn't beholden to narrative conventions,

and when we're willing to be uncomfortable, we get to have new experiences.

Over the last decade, that kind of experimentation has been happening less and less in film,

and more and more in television.

And as long as fun, safe films dominate the box office,

that will continue to be the case.

My personal takeaway from all this

is that regardless of the medium you work in,

it's important to learn the essential elements of story so your script is always compelling.

It's important to learn the narrative conventions

so you can anticipate what the audience is expecting.

And it's important to learn all the rules...

so you know the best ways to break them.
