Waching daily Mar 1 2018

Most people assume that Sonic the Hedgehog made his home video game debut on June 23rd,

1991, when the game with his name in the title was released for the Sega Genesis.

Most people, however, are wrong.

Months before Sega's speedy blue mascot officially made his way to living rooms across America,

he made a cameo in an entirely different game.

As discovered by YouTuber Larry Bundy Jr., Sonic's first real foray into home entertainment

is a weird, unpolished, and borderline illegal project — and one that's been almost entirely

forgotten as the years have passed.

In the late '80s, Sega was in bad shape.

While the Genesis, known internationally as the Mega Drive, hit stores in 1988, two years

before Nintendo released its own 16-bit console, Sega lagged behind Nintendo in both sales

and reputation.

In Japan, the release of Super Mario Bros. 3 completely overshadowed the Genesis launch,

and Sega's current mascot, Alex Kidd, didn't resonate with audiences like Nintendo's portly

plumber.

Sega began searching for a new mascot to head up a franchise and help the company gain a

foothold in the market.

An internal Sega team known as AM8 started developing ideas, and one designer, Naoto

Ohshima, came up with a blue, fanged hedgehog that he called Mr. Needlemouse.

Unlike Mario, a middle-aged man who moved at a relatively languid pace, Mr. Needlemouse

was quick and cool.

He played guitar in a rock band.

He even had a human girlfriend named Madonna.

Most crucially, both Mr. Needlemouse and his game moved really, really fast.

Sega executives liked Mr. Needlemouse, but decided that he was a little too edgy, even

for the '90s.

A redesign ditched the fangs and the band to make him cuddlier and more appealing to

an all-ages audience, and gave him a new name, Sonic, to better reflected the character's

signature speed.

Meanwhile, development on Sonic's first solo title began.

Like Mario, Sonic leaped from platform to platform, collecting coins —or in this case,

rings — while fighting enemies and scoring power-ups.

Unlike Mario's Mushroom Kingdom, Sonic's world was full of curved surfaces and slopes, multi-tiered

pathways, and an unrelenting pace.

As development on Sonic the Hedgehog continued, developers quickly realized that they had

something special.

Sega of America's head of marketing, Al Nilsen, travelled the country, conducting demonstrations

that put Mario and Sonic head-to-head.

Roughly 80 percent of players who participated preferred Sonic.

Sonic stole the Consumer Electronics Show in 1991, while Sega made sure that Sonic graced

the covers of as many video game magazines as possible in the months leading up to release.

If you were into video games in '91, you couldn't escape Sonic.

He was everywhere.

A few months before Sonic the Hedgehog's big debut on the Genesis, the character made his

first video game appearance in Rad Mobile, a racing game produced by Sega's AM2 development

group.

It wasn't much more than a small cameo—a toy Sonic charm hanging from the mirror above

Rad Mobile's virtual dashboard — but as far as debuts go, it's not a bad one.

Like Sonic, Rad Mobile is all about speed.

But in 1991, Rad Mobile it was still an arcade-only release.

For home gaming, Sonic's first appearance didn't come from Sega at all, but a relatively

unknown developer called New Bits on the RAM.

These days, you probably know Factor 5 as the company that helped make Turrican a worldwide

success, or as the developer behind the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron flight simulators.

In the company's early days, however, it produced a number of games that shamelessly ripped

off more successful titles.

One of their first big games, Katakis, was such a blatant clone of Activision's R-Type

that Activision gave Factor 5 an ultimatum: if the company didn't develop R-Type's official

Amiga port, Activision would sue them into oblivion.

In the early 90s, Factor 5 established New Bits on the RAM, a subdivision devoted to

making small, quick games on a limited budget and tight timeline.

Unlike official Factor 5 releases, the New Bits games weren't sold at retail.

Instead, they were designed to be distributed in video game magazines.

Their first game, Quik and Silva, arrived with the June 1991 issue of Amiga Fun magazine,

which actually hit stands in May.

On the surface, it was a well-designed, low-budget platformer with eight stages and a toe-tapping

soundtrack.

Reviewers liked Quik and Silva quite a bit, praising the graphics and the "simple, wholesome

gameplay."

These days, though, it's far more notable for one of its enemies, who has blue hair,

spikes, and big, wide eyes.

That's right: one of Quik and Silva's main villains is Sonic the Hedgehog, who appeared

in the game more than a month before his official console debut.

It's not just Sonic who makes an unauthorized appearance in Quik and Silva.

Almost every enemy is borrowed from another title.

Bub, from Bubble Bobble, and Pogo, the hero of Nebulus, show up as well.

So does the ship from R-Type, and characters from Factor 5's own Turrican.

Even the new characters are borrowed from existing franchises: one enemy is just Super

Mario's head grafted onto a bouncing spring.

Fortunately for Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog quickly overshadowed Factor 5's knockoff.

When Sonic officially premiered in 1991, his game was an instant hit, sparking a franchise

that's spawned over 70 games and sold more than 85 million units, gathering insanely

dedicated fans along the way.

New Bits on the RAM and Factor 5 weren't quite as lucky.

The New Bits label only produced one other game, a platformer called Metal Law, before

disappearing.

Factor 5 became a legitimate game developer, but its success didn't last.

In 2007, their PlayStation 3 exclusive Lair was panned by critics, thanks to a control

scheme so awkward that they sent out a guide after release telling reviewers how to play

the game.

In 2009, Factor 5's American branch closed, and former employees subsequently filed a

lawsuit, accusing the company of cooking the books in order to avoid paying wages.

Still, there's some hope: in 2017, Factor 5 co-founder Julian Eggebrecht revealed that

he'd reacquired the rights to Turrican, and hinted that a Switch version might be on the

way.

It's been a while, but Factor 5 might be poised for a big return — let's just hope that

they don't need Sonic's help to do it.

Sega probably won't be as forgiving the second time.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir Review | The Game Grinder - Duration: 9:48.

Sometimes I really have to scratch my head about my choices in gaming..

What I play, and when.

I've known about this game since it was released.

A close friend of mine was all about it, showed it to me and everything and I thought it looked

sweet.

That was eleven years ago.

Some years ago I bought said copy of Odin Sphere from said friend.

I was going to sit down and play it a couple times, but then I heard about this HD remaster

and I decided to hold off again.

I played this back in the fall of 2016, but with The Cartridge Club covering this for

their game of the month for February 2018, I thought this would be the perfect time to

talk about Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir.

Church here, and welcome to The Game Grinder.

Today we'll be reviewing Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir.

Odin Sphere and its HD remaster were both developed by Vanillaware, and published by

Atlus.

Vanillaware have some highly praised releases under their belt, with the most notable being

Muramasa and Dragon's Crown besides Odin Sphere itself.

Odin Sphere was originally released in 2007 for the Playstation 2 and the HD remaster

was released for the Playstation 4 in June of 2016.

In the land of Erion, there is a prophecy of an impending apocalypse, the end of the

world as we know it.

A once powerful kingdom of Valentine was once destroyed by a creation of great power, the

Crystalization Cauldon, which has caused the many regions to go to war fall into war of

this device.

So begins The Cauldron War.

Odin Sphere is a 2D action RPG.

In its simplest form, it's a side-scrolling beat 'em up, with a leveling system focused

on attack skill acquisition, with a strong narrative direction and story focus.

Throughout the game we'll play as various characters with stories that intersect.

As each character, we'll play through a series of chapters, 6 each as well as a prelude

and epilogue.

Each character's tale covers different events, sometimes with a cause and effect to others,

and once completing all character's quests, they'll merge into an epic conclusion.

Let's briefly meet our cast of heroes.

We're introduced to power struggle that's consumed Erion as we first meet the forces

of Ragnanival, under the rule of The Demon King Odin, as Gwendolyn, Valkyrie warrior,

and daughter of Odin discovers her elder sister has fallen during battle.

In the Kingdom of Titania, Prince Cornelius wishes nothing but to be with his love, a

witch of the forest, but finds himself in the underworld now in the cursed form of the

Pooka.

In the fairy forest of Ringford, the young Princess Mercedes has no choice but to take

her place as queen when her mother falls.

Oswald, a shadow knight, serves under Melvin, the advisor for Queen Elfaria, and finds his

life has been traded for the power he wields.

Lastly we'll play as Velvet, the orphaned daughter of the destroyed kingdom of Valentine,

who seeks to end the coming destruction of the world.

Game-play consists of visiting the various regions of Erion.

Each region is layed out in a series of sections.

Sections have branching paths that we'll use to progress through.

Some sections are shown as a circle, which wraps infinitely until we use an exit, and

then we have straightforward square rooms.

We're free to proceed through the areas, and backtrack at will.

We can also revisit and leave the areas as well.

Within the sections, some are shown with crossed swords.

These are the battle stages, and where the main bulk of our game-play will happen.

These usually involve a few waves of enemies to dispatch and depending on how well and

fast we do this, we'll get an overall ranking.

S, and A through F. S rankings will reap the most rewards, experience, items, and Valentine

Coins.

It's ideal to do big combos, utilizing skills either power based, or Phozon aka magic.

Phozons are a huge part to the game's story, magic casting, and leveling as well.

Phozons are gained from defeating enemies, and sometimes we may find plants that will

allow us to draw Phozons to grow other plants.

There are also Phozon Butterflies that can be absorbed, and we can even craft Phozon

potions.

Besides gaining experience to level up, Phozons can be used on various seeds we find during

the playthrough, which once planted will bear fruit.

This fruit can be eaten for large chunks of experience.

We can also use the fruit, combined with recipes found to order meals from the Pooka Chef,

for even bigger experience rewards.

Phozons can also be spent on the skills we unlock to boost their level of effectiveness.

Of course leveling boosts our overall performance, damage, defense, health, magic and power,

but also yields a power points that can be used on addition character perks like faster

movement, special passive abilities, or discounted shop prices.

Each character has a pretty large skill tree, with abilities unlocked by completing the

battle stages, or finding chests hidden throughout the regions.

These are either power based skills, or magic.

The power skills basically use stamina, which will slowly recharge.

We also have the magic abilities.

The magic doesn't automatically recover like stamina, but we can craft potions to

restore it, or as we gain Phozons, the meter will fill.

There's a pretty wide variety of skills to make use of, and the game enables us to

set a series of button commands to pull these off, but were limited to a set amount of combinations

using the circle button and the analog sticks.

This adds a level of strategy and customization to our playstyle.

I mentioned items so let's run through that.

Odin Sphere has a large focus on crafting potions, but it's not the tedium of many

crafting games.

We'll find empty potions that we can then add a series of vegetables to, and even other

potions, food or even items to change what they do, or the effectiveness.

It's a very simple and straightforward system that will have to be relied on to make it

through the game, creating our healing items or status effect items whether attack or defensive.

We can also purchase items, potions, components, food, and the essential area map from vendors

we encounter in the various places we visit.

Lastly there's the Valentine Coins.

These are given as reward at the end of combat rounds and can be spent at the Pooka Cafes.

Just like the Chef, we can get huge experience from the food items, and there's one additional

catch.

The game really has two endings, a good and bad, but the good ending has additional scenes

to show if we collect all the Valentine coins by finding all hidden chests and getting S

ratings across the board, as well as finding all the recipes and lore notes.

I got the good ending myself, but didn't get all the hidden items.

Fortunately there's Youtube.

At the beginning of the game, we'll start in what appears to be an attic, filled with

books.

Here's we'll find a young girl Alice, and her cat Socrates.

This acts as a game hub of sorts.

Each of Odin Sphere's main characters have a book.

Once completing one storyline, another book will appear.

Alice will read the books to access each story, and previous ones can be accessed again.

Also, on the bookshelf we can browse lore notes, and food and alchemy recipes we've

found.

This is really just a novel (pun intended) presentation for a menu system, but the thoughtfulness

into something a little more is definitely appreciated.

I'm not going to any great detail about Odin Sphere's story, as with each playable

characters quest intersecting and affecting events all throughout the region, there's

a lot to cover.

Despite it's heavy focus on the game-play itself, Odin Sphere has a very rich and deep

story to tell.

Though some elements may be superficial on the surface, this is a story of the end of

the world.

There's betrayal, intrigue, conspiracy, war, and destruction, but even in the face

death itself there's hope.

The cast of characters are fully voice acted, and maybe a bit off at times, I felt the actors

did a fine job, and made each personality stand out.

For a the first few hours of the game, I'll admit I felt a bit confused taking in this

massive war, and the significance of all the players involved, but as I progressed and

pieces started to come together, I found myself more and more enthralled in the story, and

wanted to see what would happen next.

Visually I'd say the game was gorgeous to look at.

The hand painted art style of the characters and scenery were detailed are definitely one

of Vanillaware strong points.

You'll revisit almost every region with each character, and though the areas didn't

necessarily change to any great extent, I never found myself tired of looking at the

backgrounds.

There's a lot going on and I really enjoyed that.

Masaharu Iwata was the composer for the soundtrack, and his pedigree definitely shows.

He's well known for his soundtracks in Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre, along with Final

Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy Tactics.

The orchestral music used fit incredibly well into the scenes and moods as needed, and there

were some very stand out songs for me.

Along with revisiting the same regions multiple times, with that we'll hear some of the

same music many times, and I had no problems with this.

It's always great when there's a game you've heard nothing but good things about

for many years since it was released, and when finally playing it meets pretty high

expectations.

Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir brings a fantastic game into the new generation in full HD, and

with it's visual style that's pure eye-candy, interesting unique characters, a winding and

twisting story, beautiful visuals and music, there's no going wrong.

The combat does get a bit repetitive, but I didn't experiment much with the skills,

so that could just be my own fault.

If you haven't played it already, I'd definitely recommend Odin Sphere as a must

play.

Now if I can make the time to play the other Vanillaware games.

Lastly I just wanted to again mention The Cartridge Club.

Think of this community as a book club for games.

Like I said, they're covering Odin Sphere for February 2018, so they'll have a wrap

up podcast with guests and will be talking about the game in depth.

I'd encourage you to head on over to their site and check things out.

Maybe following months will have more games you're interested in getting involved with.

Thanks for checking out my review of Odin Sphere Leifthrasir!

The AR15 Bible - Gas System Lengths - Duration: 4:17.

Welcome back to the AR15 Bible, presented by Clear Advantage TV.

We're going to be discussing AR15 gas system length today.

Combined with barrel length, the gas system length is a determining factor in the cyclic

operation of the rifle.

There's a balance that each AR manufacturer or builder tries to achieve between too much

gas, and too little.

Having too much gas will cause a harsher recoil impulse and may result in premature wear on

parts, whereas not enough gas can cause short stroking if the action doesn't cycle far

enough rearward to reliably eject the spent casing or strip the next round off the magazine.

There are two basic pieces to the puzzle when it comes down to gas system length and how

it affects the cyclic action.

Number one is the gas pressure, and two is the length of time that the pressure is acting

upon the bolt carrier.

Regarding pressure, the general rule is that the closer the gas port is to the chamber,

the higher the pressure levels will be.

To determine how long the pressure is acting on the BCG, we need to look to look at something

called "dwell time".

Dwell time is defined as the amount of time that the bullet is in the barrel, after it

passes the gas port.

Because the expanding gases propelling the projectile will follow the path of least resistance,

while the bullet remains in the barrel, the gas flows through the gas port and down the

gas tube, back into the action.

As soon as the bullet exits the barrel, the pressure build up which is driving the gas

through the gas port, drops off as the gas exits the muzzle.

So the time between when the bullet has passed the gas port and it exits the barrel, is the

period by which enough gas needs to be forced back into the action to get the weapon to

cycle.

There are basically five potential lengths for your gas system; Pistol, Carbine, Mid,

Intermediate and Rifle lengths.

Don't be fooled by the naming convention, the lengths are not tied to a certain type

of build, buffer tube, or rifle, but they do work better with specific barrel lengths.

Again, our goal is to choose a gas system length that compliments our barrel length,

to achieve the right amount of gas being forced back into the action.

Okay, enough on the hows and whys, let's talk turkey.

Pistol length gas systems should be run on barrels of less than 10 inches.

Carbine length gas systems should be run on barrels between 10 and 14.5 inches, although

it's very popular for manufacturers to use them on 16" guns.

This is because many manufacturers want to decrease the chance that their gun will stop

functioning if the shooter feeds it lighter ammo or if it gets dirty, but it does makes

for an overgassed rifle.

Now Midlength gas systems can be run on rifles as short as 13.7 - 14.5", but there is a

chance that some buffer tuning may be required, or that the rifle may be a bit finicky with

lighter ammo like steel cased Wolf.

Moreover, midlength systems work great on 16 to 18" guns.

Intermediate length gas systems are a bit less common but are usually found on 18"

guns.

You can make them work on a 16" barrel, but again, there might be some tuning required.

The benefit of an intermediate length system over the midlength on the same barrel, is

that the recoil impulse will be softer with an intermediate system due to slightly decreased

pressure at the port.

Rifle length gas systems are usually reserved for 20" barrels, but just like the intermediate

length system on a 16" gun, a rifle length system can work on 18" barrels as well,

potentially with some tuning.

Remember that rifle length gas systems push the gas port as far down the barrel as possible,

meaning the least amount of pressure.

Rifle length systems are generally acknowledged as the smoothest or softest lengths out there.

Couple this with an 18" barrel, and if you can get it to reliably cycle, you'll have

arguably the softest possible setup.

And yes, we agree that there's very little recoil to the 5.56 cartridge anyway.

But when you're trying to push a firearm to peak performance, every little bit of difference

can play a factor.

If you're more concerned with reliability, air on the side of caution and run a gas length

a bit on the shorter side.

If you're looking to push performance, consider running a longer length gas system and messing

around with your buffer and spring setup...we'll cover that in another video.

At the end of all of this, I suggest you do your own research to figure out what will

work best for your build.

We hope you enjoyed it and look forward to seeing you on the next video.

Until then, stay sharp and shoot straight.

Marriage

You've grown up right before my eyes So it's no surprise

It's time to get married I've carried

You as long as I can but it's time to create your family

I'm very happy For you

But I'd be lying if I said this was easy to do

You were mine for so long That now it feels wrong

To let you go But I know

You will create a family most beautiful And raise kids of your own suitable

To change this world, to make a difference My conscience

Is clear Knowing that my dear

Made it to the altar Marriage will make you stronger

There will be challenges but you'll grow Just know

It will take work, but in the end you'll make it through

When you don't know what to do I'm here

When they're not talking to you I'm here

When you said something you weren't supposed to

I'm here To cheer

You up and catch your tears I've learned so much about you over the

To look after your health And well being

For you this time is freeing As there is no foreseeing

What the future holds I just pray your spouse molds

You constructively, and for the better.

5 Uncomfortable Signs You're Becoming The Person You Are Suppose - Duration: 3:32.

5 Uncomfortable Signs Youre Becoming The Person You Are Supposed To Be

One of our greatest missions in life is to become the person we are supposed to be and

to connect to our higher selves. This journey begins with a conscious awakening and leads

us to an improved personality. Often times this journey is confusing and there is no

clear evidence of evolution. Sometimes there is just the feeling that there is something

more, something unreachable, outside our shattered world.

Before I realized who I am supposed to be I felt like I am stuck in an endless loop

of uncertainty. I thought that everything happens against me, and not for me. It took

me a while to become aware of the fact that some of the things I have experienced were

getting me closer to the person I am supposed to be.

Here are five uncomfortable signs that you might be going through a transformation as

well:

1. You are going through an identity crisis The first step to a conscious awakening is

to begin to question yourself, the beliefs you hold and your philosophy of life. You

might realize that what you believe in or who you thought you were are just other peoples

ideas planted into you. Are your values really yours? Are you following the lifestyle you

want or do you just adjust yourself to the people around you? After you cleared this

up in your head and reached to a conclusion you might feel closer to your true self.

2. Some things that you used to like no longer interest you

This can be a hobby that you used to love, but no longer brings you joy. Abandoning something

that you are used to can be frightening and it might feel like you are losing a piece

of yourself. However, this can be a sign of the fact that you are focusing on the things

that are more important to you. Stay close to what ignites you and dont be afraid

to let go of something that no longer adds to your happiness.

3. You feel lonely and isolated When you are on the path to becoming who you

should be you might feel like theres a gap between you and the people you used to

associate with. Thus you no longer feel connected to some of your friends and you stopped obsessing

over fitting in and pleasing others.

4. You say no more often This again might affect your friendships and

relationships, but saying no sometimes just means that you have learned to prioritize

yourself. To become the person you are supposed to be you need to give time to yourself and

now you understand that.

5. You take more risks To become the best version of yourself you

have to be out there, outside of your comfort zone, taking risks. This doesnt mean that

you are not terrified, but you realized that to grow and become better you must challenge

yourself.

Conclusion To work on yourself and become an evolved

person is the best gift you can give to yourself and to the world. If youre the person youre

supposed to be you attract happiness and radiate it out to the world. Once youre there you

begin to expect things to work out, you start believing in miracles and the quality of your

life improves and you begin to see the proof of that.
