Fur coats are a must have for many Koreans during the country's notoriously cold winters
as they provide protection from icy Siberian winds.
However,... to meet demand of rising number of people who are conscious about animal rights...
the Korean fashion industry is embracing fake fur.
Cho Sung-min has more on that... and the other fashion trens that took Korea by storm this
past winter.
Korea is known for its four distinctive seasons, with winter being a favorite for those who
enjoy sports on ice and snow.
As such, items that provide protection and functionality while being trendy become must
have items every year, and the long padding jacket has undoubtedly taken 2018 by storm.
And the hosting of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics just added more fuel to the craze...as
30,000 limited edition long padding jackets for the winter games were instantly sold out.
"Demand is constantly on the rise...as we are seeing sales of long coats increasing
up to 30 percent compared to last year."
Padded jackets have been steady bestsellers every winter, but the materials used for this
clothing item have been changing as consumers are becoming more influenced by issues like
animal cruelty and eco-friendliness when making purchases.
As such, Korean fashion industry has taken an alternative route and started featuring
fake fur as key material for garments.
One of the providers of fake fur says it uses the latest technology to produce an ultra-thin
polyester strand that is one hundred times thinner than a single strand of human hair.
The head of the company says air layers are formed within the polyester roll so that it
keeps the outerwear more puffy, providing better protection against the cold while being
remarkably lighter.
Synthetic materials are also used not only for fillings but also as main fashion statements,
imitating the texture and appearance of real fur or leather.
Industry experts predict synthetic materials will be more widely accepted and sought after
by trendsetters, as they are cost-effective, highly functional, and superbly fashionable.
