Before Religion This Is How People Connected With Their Spirituality

By consciousreminder

The shaman is not merely a sick man, or a madman; he is a sick man who has healed

himself. Terence McKenna

Terence Kemp McKenna (November 16, 1946 April 3, 2000) was an American ethnobotanist, mystic,

psychonaut, lecturer, and author who spoke and wrote about a variety of subjects, including

psychedelic drugs, plant-based entheogens, shamanism, metaphysics, alchemy, language,

philosophy, culture, technology, and the theoretical origins of human consciousness.

He was called the Timothy Leary of the 90s, one of the leading authorities

on the ontological foundations of shamanism, and the intellectual voice of rave culture.

Shamanism is a spiritual practice found in cultures around the world from ancient times

up to the present day.

First and foremost, shamans practices are practical and adaptable.

These practices coexist over millennia with varying cultures, systems of government, and

organized religious practices.

Many formalized religions, from Buddhism to Christianity, came from ancient shamanic roots

and still bear the shamanic threads of deep connection to the divine in all things.

But shamanism itself is not a formalized system of beliefs or an ideology.

Rather, it is a group of activities and experiences shared by shamans in cultures around the world.

These practices are adaptable and coexist with different cultures, systems of government,

and organized religious practices.

In this gem of a video Terence Mckenna spends 15 minutes talking about The Spirit Of

Shamanism.

Because it is not an organized religion as such, but rather a spiritual practice,

shamanism cuts across all faiths and creeds, reaching deep levels of ancestral memory.

As a primal belief system, which precedes established religion, it has its own symbolism

and cosmology, inhabited by beings, gods, and totems, who display similar characteristics

although they appear in various forms, depending upon their places of origin. ~John Matthews,

The Celtic Shaman

The Time I Spent All Week Singing - Story Tellers, Tumblr Art, and Dirty Underwear - Weekly Vlog - Duration: 12:54.

♫ It's the weekend

♫ And I'm happy

♫ Happy to be alive

- So it's the first sunny morning all week,

which is super exciting and makes me smile.

However, I got like five hours sleep last night.

Oh I gotta make this light.

Oh I am gonna make it?

Oh it's gonna close.

Yes sprint.

I'm sprinting.

Not really but this is I'm gonna make it.

I'm gonna make it.

Keep telling yourself that and thinking

I'm gonna make it or die.

Don't die.

I'm gonna make it.

I'm not gonna die yet.

Ooh I'm out of shape.

Oh I need a breather.

I made it, I made it.

So I'm on my way to go and see

a very dear and inspiring friend.

Natalie.

Super-excited to her.

She's in town on business and she's--

(speech drowned out by police sirens)

She's a big reason I do what I do.

A constant inspiration.

So I was trying to record myself in the elevator,

just as I got off work

and I started saying "yay I'm off work."

And the door opened and there was a cleaning lady,

she just started laughing.

"It's true I'm off work and I'm happy."

But yeah I'm off work.

It's a good day, it's a long day,

I'm actually super starving.

Normally we get dinner at work

but today they were late serving dinner

and I just had to leave,

otherwise I get home too late.

I've got like an hour commute.

I feel good, it's beautiful out.

I had a great lunch with a good friend of mine.

I fell inspired.

I feel some clarity of vision.

I'm at train station.

So we just got off the train.

Normally I pass the f out on trains, I'm so exhausted.

Probably should've just done that now

considering I only got five hours sleep last night.

But instead I was just on YouTube.

I called it research but,

it wasn't so much re--

It was research, we're calling it research.

I'm a singer at heart.

♫ 'Cause that's my name.

Obviously not so much in reality.

Fun fact, when I was a teenager,

I had a little bit of OCD, no doubt about it.

So I'm a big sports guy and I grew up in the nineties,

ooh I just told my age, basically.

I grew up in the nineties, you know the San Francisco 49er's

were really really good.

Steve Young, Jerry Rice yeah.

And I would never be a cheerleader, I would suck at it.

So big football fan.

And when it was the play off times,

I was watching these games, so nervous.

I had to do everything in two's.

That was two, in case you didn't know what two was.

Everything was in two's.

If I scratched my nose, without realizing it

or if I scratched my nose, I would have to scratch it again.

Like immediately.

And if they lost, it was because of me.

I didn't do something in two's.

I'm sorry San Francisco 49er fans.

Those losses were on me.

These days, maybe I should get back into that.

Since the 49er's are terrible,

maybe that's the reason they're so terrible.

Because I don't do everything in two's,

should I do everything in two's?

No.

Never do it.

So here's another fun fact,

ooh filled with lots of fun facts today.

So there's this little,

I wish I could turn my camera,

there's this like planter that I always walk on

when walking home.

I like to be elevated, I like to take the unusual path.

And I could scare some people though,

because they're be some people

they're like not expecting a grown man to be walking

on this planter next to them.

Wait I just got a message.

Claire Johnson.

I don't know why I'm still recording.

Y'all can't see me.

Can you see me now?

You can see me now!

It's almost midnight, I have been working for 15 hours now.

I am just sitting down at my desktop computer

after doing some artist and quote research,

doing some hashtag research.

Now I am at my big beautiful desktop computer,

Apple Macbook, not Macbook, Apple,

I don't even know what they call it.

Apple something.

What is it called?

Apple iMac.

Apple 27 inch Mac desktop.

And I am currently about to render my latest video

in a Facebook native format.

So there's a light bar above the top and bottom

and the top has in big bold letters

what that videos about.

So you can quickly see without even having to watch anything

or read the subtitles, what it's about.

And if it strikes your attention, hopefully it does,

you can read it.

So I'm gonna do that

and I'm gonna get in the shower

and then I'm gonna get to bed.

Such is my night.

It's been a very productive day

and I'm almost out of energy after five hours of sleep

the past three days.

But I do, we're gonna do this.

Tomorrow mornings gonna suck,

but I'm doing it anyways because I love it.

Guys I'm done, this is an emergency.

Emergency.

I'm down to my last pair of underwear.

I need to do laundry tomorrow night,

remind me or self I'm screwed on Saturday.

This happens shhh.

I'll go wear a dirty pair of underwear.

But that's not gonna happen,

'cause you're gonna remind me to do laundry to my Friday.

Boom.

So,

remember when I told you I needed to do laundry on Friday?

Well it's Friday and I haven't done laundry.

Not the best start to my morning, just missed my train.

It's a little rainy

and I'm a little tired.

So that's the bad news.

The good news is it's Friday.

Something I definitely am gonna have to work on

and this is actually I think really good for me,

is not caring what others think

when I've got a camera in front of my face

recording my daily life.

It is gonna be a good thing,

because it helps me,

it reminds me that I shouldn't give a fuck.

So this is hard for me.

I like to be invisible when I'm out in public.

I like to be the viewer not the seen,

the see-er not the seen.

You like what I did there, yeah.

But I'm definitely noticeable

and people are looking at me weird.

And this is a lesson in not giving a fuck.

Friday.

Friday, Friday, Friday yeah.

It's Friday 6pm.

It's a little rainy but I'm super stoked

to get out of work and have a wonderful weekend.

I kind of like this mist,

it's mysterious.

I just realized that I've had the Sound of Music,

like the song, stuck in my head all day.

And what's funny, when I get something stuck in my head,

I don't know if this is true of you,

or if this is normal.

But whenever I have something stuck in my head,

it's like literally a line.

In this case its

♫ To the sound of music

That's literally on repeat.

♫ To the sound of mus

Of course when I hear it in my head,

it sounds way better.

It sounds super professional when I sing in my head,

not so much when I let it out of my mouth.

Such is life.

♫ To the sound of music

So last night, I emailed a really great gallery in Australia

who I really respect and asked them two questions.

One for them to take a look at this artist

who reached out to me,

who I thinks enormously, enormously talented.

This young artist from Florida, only 18 years old,

but the kid is ridiculously talented

and I wanted to get their advice

and to see if they would at least speak to him.

Just to give him advice about the industry.

And two, I basically asked if I could intern for them,

or doing any work them.

Basically anything I can do to learn the industry

as I try to become an art dealer myself.

Right now I'm just kind of looking at my Tumblr.

Tumblr is, I use Tumblr not necessarily for growth

but for, it's a great central location

to post all the artwork that I'm going to consider.

For my Instagram and Facebook, ForLoveInArt.

So give that a check if you want,

nathanryanproctor.tumblr.com,

if you want a preview of what may be to come.

I don't post everything,

but yeah it's like, I love it.

Tumblr is also were if I want one of the artwork,

not all of it, but it is a definite source.

Here let's check it out actually.

I've been digging a lot of stuff

with really amazing uses of color.

You can only really get digitally.

So that's beautiful.

This is really, really cool.

From the Dominican Republic.

Gaby D'Alessandro.

I'm looking at this fridge and I'm like

I could be hungry, I could have some ice cream

or I could go healthy and have some kind of vegetables.

I haven't really had much vegetables today.

Don't you love the word vegetable?

Veg-e-tab-le.

So,

remember when I told you I needed to do laundry on Friday?

Well it's Friday?

And I haven't done laundry, nor am I gonna get to it.

So yep.

Tomorrow I'm gonna be wearing dirty underwear,

and that's a little embarrassing,

but it's what I get for not doing my laundry.

I have to pay.

It's called karma.

Wow that sucks though, it happens.

It happens, I will survive.

It's kinda gross but I will survive.

And yeah, I just wanted to let you know

that you let me down.

You were supposed to remind me.

You did not remind me.

It's your fault.

No it's not, I love you.

10 Celebs Who Look Unrecognizable Without Makeup - Duration: 2:24.

Whoever said that diamonds are a girl's best friend sure forgot to take into account the close bond between these ladies and their concealer, blush & primer!

Actors and celebrities always like to protest that they are just like normal people and it was only after we got an eyeful of them without all the makeup that we realized how literally they meant it! To back that up, we dug under all the layers of makeup and here's what we found:

Did Donald Trump violate the law with a Twitter post - Duration: 2:09.

Did Donald Trump violate the law with a Twitter post

White House press secretary Sean Spicer, who is already under fire for his dissembling

on the role of former campaign manager Paul Manafort, seemed flustered when responding

to a question about the White House using federal money to lobby for the American Health

Care Act, which could be illegal.

The controversy stems from tweets sent by both President Donald Trumps official White

House Twitter account and the Twitter account of his social media director Dan Scavino Jr.

When asked about whether these tweets violated federal laws, Spicer told reporters it

is not the president it doesnt that is not applicable to the president, no.

Scott Amey, general counsel at the Project on Government Oversight, told ThinkProgress

that based on the letter of the law, the lobbying provision would apply to the White

House and any White House official.

Any lobbying for the health care bill violates that ban.

Spicer rebutted the notion that Trump had violated the Anti-Lobbying Act, which does

not allow federal money to be used to favor, adopt, or oppose, by vote or otherwise, any

legislation, law, ratification, policy, or appropriation. Because the Department of

Justice believes it doesnt apply to public speeches or public writings of federal executive

branch officials, Trumps tweets could in theory be exonerated.

That said, the appropriations bill which funds the White House communications operations

(along with all other appropriations bills) also prohibit their use for publicity or

propaganda regarding impending legislation.

This explicitly includes film presentations like the one included in the tweet from Trumps

presidential account.

NOW THE STORM TEAM FORECAST

WITH METEOROLOGIST ETHAN

HOUSTON.

ETHAN: THE RECIPE TO STAY COOL

IS OVERNIGHT RAIN, SOME WIND OUT

OF THE EAST AND SOME FALL.

GET SOCKED IN WITH SOME CLOUDS.

I'M CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC THAT

WARM FRONT WILL LIFT OVER THE

VALLEY INTO THE LATE AFTERNOON.

A LITTLE BIT OF SUNSHINE WILL

BRIEFLY SPIKED OUR TEMPERATURES

BACK UP ABOVE AVERAGE.

RIGHT NOW THOUGH, STILL LOTS OF

CLOUDS.

46 DEGREES AND LIGHT BREEZE OF

THE SOUTH IN HERSHEY.

THE VISIBILITY HAS IMPROVED TO

OUR SOUTH AND RIGHT NOW WE'RE

SEEING IT UP TO SIX MILES IN

CHAMBERSBURG AND YORK.

RAINFALL TOTALS FOR THE DAY

TODAY HAVE BEEN RELATIVELY

LIGHT.

IF YOU INCHES OF RAIN -- A FEW

INCHES OF RAIN.

A LITTLE BIT MORE AND LANCASTER

-- IN LANCASTER.

THERE WILL STILL BE THE CHANCE

FOR A FEW SCATTERED SHOWERS

THROUGH THE AFTERNOON.

OFFSHORE SOUTH, THE SUN BREAKS

OUT IN NORTHERN PORTIONS OF

VIRGINIA, THAT'S WHERE WE FIND

THE WARM FRONT THAT WILL LIFT

OVER THE REGION AND THAT IS

REALLY GOING TO BUMP OUR

TEMPERATURES UP THROUGH

TOMORROW.

I EXPECT BRIEFLY WE SEE

TEMPERATURES RISE INTO THE UPPER

60'S, POSSIBLY NEAR 70 INTO THE

AFTERNOON.

A FEW SHOWERS REMAIN POSSIBLE.

THE SUNSHINE MAKES ALL THE

DIFFERENCE.

TEMPERATURES WILL BE COOLER THAN

THE FORECAST.

OVERNIGHT TONIGHT WE SEE THE

CLOUDS RETURN AND THE RETURN OF

FOG.

THE WIND TURNS OUT OF THE

SOUTHEAST AND STAYS RELATIVELY

MILD.

LOWS IN THE UPPER 40'S TO UPPER

50'S -- TO LOWER 50'S.

BEEP RETURN -- BE PREPARED FOR

THE RETURN OF SHOWERS.

I DO EXPECT MOST OF THE

SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY WILL BE ADDED

OR ABOVE 70 DEGREES FOR

TOMORROW.

WE SEE THE WIND IS STARTING TO

CHANGE DIRECTION AND TURNING OUT

OF THE SOUTH.

THAT WARM FRONT

IS NOW STARTING

TO APPROACH THE REGION.

IT IS 54 IN LEESBURG.

FOR NOW AT 71 IN

RALEIGH AND 60

IN PITTSBURGH.

WE WILL TALK ABOUT THE WIND OUT

OF THE EAST KEEPING THINGS COOL.

THERE GOES THE FRONT ON THE

PICTURE THAT ALLOWS US TO AT

LEAST SEE SOME SUNSHINE THROUGH

THE DAY.

ANOTHER STORM SYSTEM FORMS ALONG

THE COLD FRONT THAT COMES IN FOR

TOMORROW.

THERE WE BREAKS IN THE CLOUDS

DURING THE AFTERNOON AND THAT

ALLOWS FOR INSTABILITY TO SET

UP.

THERE COULD BE SOME

THUNDERSTORMS TOMORROW IS THE

FRONT APPROACHES THE REGION.

SCATTERED SHOWERS AND A FEW

THUNDERSTORMS WILL REMAIN LIKELY

TILL AFTER DARK.

A COLD FRONT STARTS TO MOVE ON

THROUGH AFTER SUNSET.

HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS IN OVER THE

GREAT LAKES REGION, THAT WILL

HELP THE ROAD THE CLOUDS.

IT WON'T BE QUITE AS COLD AS THE

PAST COUPLE OF DAYS.

WE SEE TEMPERATURES BACK NEAR 60

DEGREES WERE HIGHS.

THE OVERALL RAIN CHANCES, LOOK

AT THE RANGE.

A FEW THUNDERSTORMS TOMORROW, IT

LOOKS LIKE A QUARTER OF AN INCH

TO POSSIBLY UP TO THREE QUARTERS

OF AN INCH OF RAIN WILL BE

POSSIBLE.

UNSEASONABLY WARM THE NEXT TWO

DAYS.

WE GET SOME SUNSHINE THAT BRINGS

US TO THE UPPER 60'S.

IF WE DON'T, MAYBE A LITTLE

COOLER THAN THAT.

TEMPERATURES BACK TO THE AVERAGE

WITH HIGHS IN THE 50 -- NEAR 50

DEGREES.

How to Overcome Fear of Failure With God - Duration: 9:01.

How to Overcome Fear of Failure With God

Not too long ago, someone told me their pastor told them that the phrase, "Fear Not"

was in the Bible 365 times.

One for every single day of the year.

My response?

Your pastor is a liar!

Hey guys, Justin here and I would like to welcome you to That Christian Vlogger, a place

where you get to join me and experience, "Faith in the First Person."

On this channel I talk about relevant issues of faith every single Monday & Thursday, so

if you would like to know when new videos are out, hit that subscribe and notification

bell buttons below!

This idea that the Bible says the phrase "fear not" 365 times is a pseudo- fact that I've

seen circulated around over the last few years.

And it's wrong for a few reasons.

The first being the the phrase "fear not" is only used 83 times in the KJV of the Bible.

Secondly, even if it was mentioned 365 times, it wouldn't matter as the exact number of

days in a Hebrew calendar can vary anywhere from 353 to 385 days.

But don't worry, this doesn't mean you have to live a life of fear and trepidation.

No sense freaking out.

Because if God said it once, shouldn't it should be enough?

The Bible is clear, that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of love and power

and a sound mind.

[2 Timothy 1:7]

The reason why this stood out to me this week was because I was watching an interview of

a young crossfit athlete and during the interview, she was asked what her biggest fear in life

was.

Her response, a fear of failure.

And honestly, I can relate to that.

A few years ago, my answer was actually the exact same thing.

So many of us share the fear of not measuring up.

What if the girl I like doesn't think I'm man enough?

What if I don't get into the school that I'm applying for?

What if I don't pass this test?

I remember when I was 17 years old, nearly 10 years ago.

I was invited to share my very first sermon at my church.

It was the first time I did any meaningful public speaking or any type of preaching in

my life and to put it lightly, I was terrified.

I had spent hours upon hours working on writing and researching for this message.

I remember staying up to the wee hours of the morning revising my message and practicing

over and over.

So that weekend, I stood up in front of a few dozen of my peers and other church members

and I gave it my best.

I preached my heart out and tried my best to communicate a message that had impacted

my life.

And when I was done, I felt pretty good about it all.

I didn't pass our or throw up while on stage, so as far as I was concerned- I did a good

job.

Well, that was a mistake, because apparently… it was horrible.

Rather than people running up to the front and giving their lives to Jesus like I had

envisioned, people were actually upset.

Apparently what I was preaching, wasn't exactly on point theologically…

I think the term, "heresy" was even used once or twice

In fact, later that week, I remember getting a phone call from my Youth Pastor.

Now, to his credit, he was very supportive and encouraging, but the underlying message

was clear.

I was ignorant and I had failed.

That moment in life when you realize that you've failed… it doesn't feel very

good.

In fact, it sucks!

Here I was, trying to do something positive, trying to make a difference for the kingdom

of God and I completely fell flat on my face.

I remember thinking to myself, "well that's the last time I'm doing that!"

As humans, we avoid failure like the plague.

Why?

Because failure leaves a taste so bitter in our mouth that we will do everything that

we can to avoid failing.

But unfortunately, in order to successfully avoid failure, many times that also means

that we stop taking risks.

Never attempt anything unless I know for 100% that I can succeed.

Because the last time I took a risk, I ended up making a complete fool of myself and I

am not doing that again.

Well, it's been nearly ten years since that last great failure and my opinions on failure

have changed a little bit.

I've learned to embrace and even to a certain extent seek out failure rather than to avoid

it.

I know that sounds crazy, but I've actually realized that failure is a blessing!

Because failure is a sign that you're trying something new.

Failure means that you've gone outside of your comfort zone and that you're pushing

the envelope.

Because the only way that you'll never fail at life is if you stop taking risks.

The greatest most successful people in the world failed 10 times more than they've

ever succeeded.

Michael Jordan is famous for saying that he's missed more than 9,000 shots in his career.

Lost nearly 300 games.

He's been trusted to make the game winning shot 26 times and came up empty.

He says, "I've failed over and over and over again in my life.

And that is why I succeed."

I used to believe that success and failure were at two opposite ends of the spectrum.

That in order to be a success, you could not be a failure.

I used to believe that you had to do everything in your power to possibly avoid failure.

And if you were lucky enough at evading the things in life that you could possibly fail

at, then and only then would you become a success.

But that's not how life works.

Because failure is the currency on the road to success.

Failure is the price we pay in order to become successful.

Only those who have failed over and over have what it takes to become truly successful in

life.

And if I've learned anything over the ten years since then its that failures teach you

lessons that success never could.

I remember being tempted in that moment then to just give up and to quit.

I heard the whispers and the doubts saying that perhaps communication just wasn't my

skill set.

Perhaps I should just give up on the idea of being used by God and play it safe.

But what good was that?

How could I live with myself if I became a quitter.

No, I wouldn't allow this momentary setback to keep me from being who God wanted me to

be.

So I decided then, that no matter how many times I would need to fail, that I was determined

to follow God wherever he led me.

Looking back on that moment in my life, I realize that I owe so much to this failure.

Part of the reason that I became so studious when preparing worships, sermon, classes,

or now… even these Youtube videos was largely because of that failure.

The reason why I have worked so hard on my communication skills and presentation is largely

due to that moment of anguish and agony from when I had failed.

So if I could give you one piece of advice regarding failure, it would be this.

Don't run away from failure.

Embrace it and allow God to use it to build you up.

Instead of quitting when you fail, learn from it and grow.

It's been this mental shift and approach to life has really made a big difference for

me.

Now, I don't really fear failure- not because I'm perfect and never fail, but because

I realize that failure isn't the end of the world.

But, Justin, if you're not afraid of failure anymore, what do you say when someone asks

what you're most afraid of.

My answer now?

Regret.

To me, the thing that I'm most afraid of… is getting to the end of my life and regretting

all that I could have done if only I had courage.

To me, the very worst thing that could happen is to avoid taking risks all my life, playing

it safe for years and years and never actually succeeding in life at the things that truly

matter.

Francis Chan put it this way, "Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding

at things in life that don't really matter."

And so I leave the question with you, what are you most afraid of?

Hey guys, thanks so much for watching and if you've enjoyed this video, give it a

thumbs up and share it with a friend!

Don't forget, new videos up every Monday & Thursday so definitely subscribe!

But until next time, I'm That Christian Vlogger, and I want to encourage you to experience,

"Faith in the First Person."

God bless!!!
