The decisions you make and the actions that follow are a reflection of who you are.
You cannot hide from yourself.
The words spoken to a young Jack from the Emperor.
What we've seen in the latest episode of Samurai Jack and the one preceding it is a
lone white wolf, which appears to be a reflection of Jack, his actions, and his consequential
destiny.
What is the real purpose of this white wolf?
Is it a mere symbolic metaphor of the actions that have played out with Jack?
Or are the two and their destinies entwine with one another, with an overarching plot
to be played out in future episodes?
Possibly leading to the extinguish of the ultimate evil, Aku?
For the answer to that question, let's take a look at the meaning of the wolf in Japanese
culture.
Ôkami is the Japanese name for the creature commonly called the Japanese wolf.
Okami also means "Great God" or "Great Spirit".
In Japanese mythology, wolves were thought to protect against fire, disease, and brought
fertility to various communities and to couples hoping to have children.
In some Japanese cultures, the wolf is worshipped as a deity, and the Japanese people known
as the Ainu people believed that they were born from the union of a wolf like creature
and a goddess.
What does this mean?
I speculate that the white wolf will soon be revealed to be a Japanese god or goddess
of some sort.
You may be familiar with Capcom's 2006 action adventure game Okami.
The main protagonist is a white wolf named Amaterasu, who is in fact the Sun Goddess
to all the land.
The game is set sometime in classical Japanese history, and combines several Japanese myths,
legends and folklore to tell the story of how the land was saved from darkness by the
Shinto sun goddess, named Amaterasu, who took the form of a white wolf.
The white wolf Amaterasu is a sun goddess, therefore destined to face the dark evil known
as Yami, which literally translates to "darkness" in Japanese.
If we take a look at Episode 37 of Samurai Jack, The Birth of Evil, we see that the show
doesn't shy away from pitting gods and goddesses against the ultimate evil.
In the beginning of the universe, we've seen the supreme God of Norse Mythology, Odin,
one of the Avatars of the Hindu deity Vishnu, and the Ancient Egyptian Sun God Ra all team
up to defeat the Ultimate Evil.
Though they were successful in their battle, a small piece of the Ultimate Evil broke off
and hit Earth with its devastation.
That small piece of the Ultimate Evil would soon be known by the name Aku.
Now, it once took actual gods to defeat the Ultimate Evil once before, it stands to reason
that it would take yet another god or goddess to face and eventually defeat this small piece
of the Ultimate Evil known as Aku.
Perhaps the introduction of the lone white wolf is the show's way of introducing the
Japanese Sun God Amaterasu, depicted in the Okami video game?
In fact, the producers of the show may envision a similar fight where Amaterasu is joined
by the human tengu warrior Waka to defeat Yami, with Jack taking up that particular
role and fighting alongside the lone white wolf against Aku.
Since Jack no longer has the magical sword, perhaps this is the show's way of remedying
the loss of the sword with a deity to aid him.
It wouldn't be too far-fetched, as we've seen the Ultimate Evil defeated once before
by ancient gods from different cultures.
Perhaps they saved the best deity for last.
One that resonates with Jack and his Japanese culture.
The bringer of light that once vanquished darkness from the land.
The Japanese Sun God, Amaterasu.
