So last night I went to this event.
Prior to walking into the event, I was really not aware of what I was getting myself into.
I was under the assumption that it was a bit of a networking event.
But then, I walked into the event and realized it was a pitch for this app.
And I was not really aware of what this app was or what it did -- and I won't get into
the details of this app and what it does.
So when I walked in, I did a little bit of research, got out my phone, had a look at
what this app does.
And I thought it was pretty -- it was a good idea.
I thought there was a lot of value for people with this app.
And I was open to listening to these people talk about this app.
But then, the event started and these lecturers started talking about this app and I was getting
a bit discouraged, mainly because the lecturers were only talking about money and the value
this app can bring to the immediate customers -- their customers, but not their customers'
customers; mainly these people that were in this room, at this event.
And I found that a bit discouraging, but I gave these lecturers the benefit of the doubt
anyway.
And as they continued talking, they kept talking about the benefits of these people in the
room and not so much the customers beyond that, I felt.
And it didn't sink well with me as they kept hitting home with this idea.
And from there, I started to think about the app itself, 'cause usually in businesses or
with people when they make products, their products are a reflection of their business
and you can tell a lot from a business just based on their products and what they're making
and how they're helping people, what value they're bringing to the market.
And I just started to realize that this app was a bit of a gimmick and I did not value
it at all, personally.
I was really just not inspired by this app.
And I am not saying this to devalue anyone that values money.
Money is important.
It's so much a part of our culture.
And I'm also not devaluing these people.
People should be able to do what they want, with respect to others and their values.
But I'm raising this story to talk about the ideas, to help me realize why I was uninspired
and to help you and to help others that value my opinion.
And for me, what it came down to is this idea that I've realized of late: a lot of people
don't realize how to inspire.
And when you don't realize how to inspire or you can't inspire others, then you resort
to controlling or manipulating others.
And advertising is a great example of this.
How many ads use control or manipulation to get customers to buy their products.
The lowest prices, we have the lowest prices.
Your friend has this product, so why don't you?
This celebrity has this product, so why don't you?
It's just manipulation and it's not inspiring.
And the question then becomes: how do you inspire others?
How do you inspire people?
And what I have brought it down to, or how I describe it and what I've gone through is:
inspiration starts from a burning feeling.
It's that urge.
It's that pull.
And that's where it's difficult to inspire people because feelings are abstract and intangible.
I mean, really, how do you describe a feeling?
That's the challenge when it comes to inspiring others.
And I think, what I did and I think what anyone can really only do is: you have to start articulating
that feeling and trying to articulate it.
But the funny thing is, as you try to articulate it -- so let's say, as you try to write it
down, the words that you use will start to resonate with you.
And gradually, as you continue to articulate this feeling and have these articulations
resonate with you, you'll be able to realize your strong purpose and from there, make decisions
on your strong purpose which will then inspire people because as you act, as you behave your
feeling, your burning feeling will start to resonate with the people around you and that'll
inspire them to do the same thing.
