Hello everyone, TGF here, with a new video concept !
Between two Zelda : Breath of The Wild sessions, I noticed
some hidden things everywhere on its world.
So I wondered if Visual Novels games were also filled with little secrets.
And that seems to be the case !
So, in this new mini-series, I will tell you 10 facts about a Visual Novel series.
We will start with the Danganronpa series
developped by Spike Chunsoft and edited in the USA and Europe by NISA.
Don't worry, there won't be any spoilers for the upcoming Danganronpa V3
but there will be minor spoilers for Danganronpa 1, Danganronpa 2 & Danganronpa : Another Episode.
Are you ready ? Here we go !
"Just so you know, I don't feel mercy or sympathy, 'cause I'm a bear, after all !" - Monokuma (Danganronpa 2)
In Danganronpa 2 : Goodbye Despair, in one of the many Monokuma Theaters,
Monokuma doesn't talk to us, or more specifically, he talks to us by Morse Code.
The code in question is the one currently shown on the screen.
But what does it mean ?
If we translate it into English, we get : "BE SURE TO DRINK YOUR KUMATINE.'"
That must mean something, isn't it ?
Indeed. It's a reference to a movie called "A Christmas Story"
and to a particular scene where the protagonist, a young kid,
tries to create spy codesn ending up with the phrase "Be sure to drink your ovaltine".
The scene in question ? Here it is !
Ovaltine ?
A crummy commercial ?
"Will it really give you the hope you're looking for ? I can't say I ever saw it that way..." - Celestia Ludenberg (Danganronpa 1)
Now, let's talk about Celestia Ludenberg, The Ultimate Gambler, for this second trivia.
In her Free Time Events, she references many games she participated in.
The most interesting of them all is obviously "The Liar King" where she said to have faced two opponents
one "honest girl" and one "genius con-man".
It's difficult for manga fans to not see the reference to the Liar Game manga series
and to their main characters : Nao Kanzaki and Shinichi Akiyama.
"And together, we are....The Monokumas !" - Monomi (Danganronpa 2)
Monomi, or Usami, is the instigator of the field trip in Danganronpa 2 : Goodbye Despair.
However, we can see her in Danganronpa : Trigger Happy Havoc !
Where exactly ?
Monomi appears to be one of the things Monokuma ask you to construct in Danganronpa's School Mode
a bonus mode of Danganronpa, under the name of Warlockuma.
When you succeed, with your hard work, to assemble the pieces for Warlockuma
it appears under the looks of Usami and allows the students to leave the school.
It's a good ending of that School Mode.
"If it means we get another step closer to unmasking the mastermind, it really doesn't bother me..." - Kyoko Kirigiri (Danganronpa 1)
In the very first trailer of Danganronpa : Another Episode,
the developpers did tease that the game is going to be sports-based
featuring Ishamaru, Sakura and Aoi and also Kyoko as a basketball player.
The reason for this odd choice is that the seiyuu of Kyoko Kirigiri,
Yoko Hikasa is also known for her contribution to a basketball-based anime called Ro-Kyu-Bu !
In this anime, Yoko Hikasa plays the role of Saki Nagatsuka.
In addition, Yoko Hikasa is part of J-Pop Group with 4 seiyuus of this anime series.
"And as soon as the beam touched it, the burgers started floating in mid-air !" - Yasuhiro Hagakure (Danganronpa 1)
The next trivia may be short-sized, but it is important nonetheless
We're talking about Yasuhiro Hagakure. He is the Ultimate Clairvoyant and he does divinations from the future.
However, his accuracy keeps varying !
In the games, he says to us that his accuracy rate is about 20 %.
However, in the anime and specifically in Episode 6 of Danganronpa 3, he says that his accuracy rate is 30 %!
The reason for this change between game and anime is unknown to us.
Hiiiiiii ! I'm Junko Enoshima ! Charmed, I'm sure !" - Junko Enoshima (Danganronpa 1)
Let's talk about Junko Enoshima. His talent is "Ultimate Fashionista"
but in Japanese, it's not really described that way.
The exact term used is "Ultimate Gyaru"
The word "gyaru" makes reference to girls, whose fashion sense make them
follow all the trends of fashion like modify her costume (like Junko with her skirt)
or decorate her telephone. The gyaru are rivals to other girls types like the geishas.
"I don't know why, but...I have a burning desire to start writing !" - Toko Fukawa (Danganronpa 1)
Let's talk now about Toko Fukawa and her childhood. The young Ultimate Novelist reveals
in her Free Time Events, that she has one father but two mothers
in which one prefers Western meals and the other prefers Japanese meals.
In Ultra Despair Girls, we learn the reason of her fear of the dark :
it is connected to her being abused as a child.
That would explain her dissociative identity disorder, when I think of it...
"This wasn't supposed to...Why me ?" - Junko Enoshima (Danganronpa 1)
In Chapter 1 of Danganronpa : Trigger Happy Havoc,
Junko Enoshima is pierced by spears because she hasn't respected the rules
she attacked Monokuma. She was pierced by the Spears of Gugnir.
You're maybe asking where the Gugnir name comes from.
Gugnir is a name from the Norse Mythology
and references of the weapon carried by Odin, the main god of the Norse Mythology.
The spear is described as being so well balanced that it could strike any target, no matter the skill or strength of the wielder.
"In a true competition, there's no such thing as a tie !" - Kiyotaka Ishimaru (Danganronpa 1)
Kiyotaka Ishimaru believes that "when the body is naked, so is the soul"
This is based off the traditional Japanese concept of "naked socializing" (裸の付き合い hadaka no tsukiai)
It explores the fact that collective nudity helps mutual bonds
and without distinguisinghing people according to social class with the calm atmosphere
of onsen, Japanese public baths. You have to know that in onsens, nudity is mandatory.
People are usually not allowed to wear swimsuits in onsens.
Now, we have a better understanding on why Mondo Oowada and him shared a strong bond.
"There's only one Ultimate Masseuse, and that's me : NEKOMARU NIDAII !" - Nekomaru Nidai (Danganronpa 2)
Finally, let's talk about chapters names in Danganronpa 2 : Goodbye Despair.
The 3rd Chapter "Trapped by The Ocean Scent" is linked to one of the Original Soundtrack Music.
What's especially interesting is the name of the 4th Chapter "Do Ultimate Robots Dream of Clockwork ?"
It references a Phillip K.Dick book called "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep ?"
(his french name being "Les Androides rêvent-ils de moutons électriques?")
This book inspired the Blade Runner movie,
a masterpiece by Ridley Scott, starring Harrison Ford.
And that's it for my 10 facts about interesting things in Danganronpa !
I hope you appreciated this video, and if that's the case,
don't forget to like, share, comment and subscribe if you want me to do more of these.
