Hi everyone, it's Lily, and today I'm going to be doing the mid-year book freakout
tag. This tag was created by Chami from ReadLikeWildfire and I will link the original
video down below in the description. First of all before I get into the tag I
just want to apologize for the fact that I sound so bunged up today, I am a bit
sick, I'm not really that sick otherwise I wouldn't be filming, I just have really
bad hay fever and so I have a bunged up nose and i keep sneezing and my eyes aren't too
itchy today because it's raining but I also have a bit of a cough and a bit of a headache.
It's not fun, I don't like pollen. So I've been wanting to do this tag for ages and I wanted
to do it last year and I really didn't know why I didn't do it, I think I just
must have missed the time to do it and by the time that I thought about doing
it, it was too late to film and edit. But I'm really excited to do this video, I think it
has a lot of great questions to help you reflect on the year so far so let's get
into it. The first question is the best book you've read
so far in 2017 and there were definitely a few contenders for this. But I think the
best one that I've read so far this year is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.
I'm sure that this is a lot of people's answer for this question but honestly
like there were definitely a few other contenders but I think just the mix in
this book of the incredible characters, incredible family dynamics, the writing,
the humour, the references, the really important subject matter it talks about
and the fact that this is all packed into a debut novel just makes it so
phenomenal and so fantastic and definitely worth the hype that it has been getting. I
just was so happy that this book lived up to my expectations and that it was just
as incredible as everyone was saying. If you haven't read this you really really
should. Number two is the best sequel that you've read so far in 2017. To be
honest I think I've only read two but this would win anyway because it's on my
favorite books of the year list already and I love it and that is The Unbound
by Victoria Schwab. I read this I think back in February and I don't know what
overcame me but I just felt so connected to this book. This book is the sequel to
The Archived by Victoria Schwab, it's really really good and for some reason I
just really connected to these books and these characters, to this even more so,
this book had so many tropes I just love. Like the romance had so many tropes
I love, like the main relationship, and it looks at PTSD and trauma and I just
remember racing through it, i remember feeling so connected to it and so connected to the
characters and I hadn't felt that way about a book in so long and I just loved
the reading experience of this book, it was such good time. Number three is a new release that
you haven't read yet but want to. For this I kind of have two and the first one is
The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord. I haven't read an Emery Lord book yet but this
literally just sounds so much up my street and the only reason I haven't read this yet
is because I've been just reading books for YALC and Emery Lord is not gonna be at YALC
so I can't really read it yet but as soon as YALC is over, this is
definitely going to be a book that I get to And then a book that I really should
read before YALC is Our Dark Duet by Victoria Schwab. I read This Savage Song last year
and I really really enjoyed it. I don't know I haven't read this yet, it took me a
while to pick up as well like it took me about two weeks after it came out for me to
actually get it and I don't know why. I don't know ... why haven't I read this yet?!
Like she's going to be at YALC so it's not even like I have the like 'oh they're not gonna be at YALC so i'll
read them after' excuse like I need to just read it. Number is your most
anticipated release for the second half of 2017 and I think for this one for me,
I really struggled with thinking of books that I'm like super excited for. But I am really
excited for The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo. This is a kind of collection of
short stories that are kind of myths and stuff set in the Grisha World. So they're
like the myths that the characters of the Grisha World
learn as children and things like that. And I love mythology and fairy tales and
stories like that and so like just learning more about the Grisha world
which is a world that I love, this is going to be amazing and the samplers
that I've from people who've hauled them from BEA look incredibly beautiful. Number
five is biggest disappointment of the year so far and to be honest I haven't
rated a tonne of books below three stars. The only book that I've rated one
star so far this year that was really disappointing, was Caraval by Stephanie
Garber. The premise isn't exactly something that I would go for but
because it was so hyped by everyone else and it did sound interesting, I picked
it up. And, it just, there was nothing good about it to me I did not like anything
in it. The characters were flat, the world-building was lackluster, the plot
was all over the place, the writing was all over the place to me, I just didn't get
this book. And that's fine, that's my opinion, if you loved this book that is
completely your opinion and totally valid but there was like nothing I liked about
this book and that's so disappointing. Number 6 is the biggest surprise of
the year so far and that is definitely Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire.
I just didn't know what to expect from this book and I didn't think I would
like it that much because it's so short so I didn't think I was going to connect it
very well. And I really love this book, this was like a
4.5/5 out of 5 star book for me and I just loved the characters, I love the
world, I thought it was so whimsical and magical and talked about some really
great things and so much in such like a tiny book and I really really enjoyed it
so that definitely came as a surprise to me. Nmber 7 is your favorite new author in
2017 and I don't really consider someone like a favorite author until I've read at least
two of their books and I've really really enjoyed them. So there have been a couple authors like Angie Thomas that I've read a book of theirs this year and I'm definitely
anticipating reading more from, but I don't really consider them a favourite until I've
read more than one book. So someone I read a second book of this year and loved
was Nina LaCour. I read Everything Leads to You last year then I read We Are Okay
this year and I've loved both of them, I thought they were both amazing and she's
definitely like an auto-buy author now, definitely a new favourite author that I will
just probably buy anything she publishes from now because I think she's great.
Number eight is newest fictional crush and to be honest like I don't really
crush on characters very much, but I definitely was with Jo in Georgia
Peach and Other Forbidden Fruit with crushing on Mary Carson I was like, when I was
reading that book I was like, I get you Jo like ... same. Number nine is newest
favorite character and I think for me this is Will Parry from The His Dark
Materials series. I really liked Northern Lights and then I read The Subtle Knife this
year and for some reason I just really connected to Will, I thought he was
adorable and like whenever I was reading it I was just like 'protect Will Parry at
all costs', like please make sure he's okay I love him and I just wish him the
best and I'm really scared for him when I read The Amber Spyglass later this
year. Number 10 is a book that made you cry and I actually cry at quite a lot of books
nowadays, I never used to cry at books and this year I have just been sobbing at so
many. But the book that I just remember weeping at and that made me
cry for like a good hour after I finished it was We Are Okay by Nina
Lacour. This book is a book that talked about grief. Just a way that Nina Lacour
wrote about grief in this book was so raw and realistic and just really hit
home to me and I just remember reading the last few pages of this book and just
like sobbing because it was just so well done. Number 11 is a book that made you
happy and this book made me cry and laugh but it made me laugh a lot as well and
that is Sofia Khan is Not Obliged by Ayisha Malik. This is also a book that
surprised me, I went into it and I was just like I don't know if I'm going to like
this because I don't read a lot of like women's fiction or chick lit or whatever
it's called. This book just, I really connected to it. It made laugh, it's so
funny and but it also made me cry because I felt so connected to the
characters and I just think they're so funny and realistic and it just talks
about the really important issues whilst also be light-hearted and like
self-aware and I just really really enjoyed it. Number 12 is your favorite
book to movie adaptation that you've seen so far this year and I've seen a
couple book to movie adaptations, but the only one I've seen the movie of that I also read
the book of was A Monster Calls. And I do love the book and I did love the movie.
I thought the movie was incredible and the screenplay was written by Patrick Ness
and it was just beautiful and I cried from like the second minute throughout
the entire movie until the end. The story is something that means a lot to me, it's
very personal to me and I just thought the movie was incredible and if you haven't
seen the A Monster Calls adaptation, please do because it's so good. Next
question is your favorite video that you've made so far this year. I think for
this one there were kind of two. I really really liked my unpopular opinions book
tag video because I'd be wanting to do it for so long and I really liked the
way it turned out and just the discussion in the comments and stuff
like that because I love those types of videos. And
then I also really really liked my diversity bingo recommendations video
because that video obviously took a lot of work, a lot of researching books and
thinking about books and going through the diversity bingo sheet and just
putting it together took a really long time and I really liked the way it turned
out as well so I really liked those two. The next question is the most beautiful
book you have bought or received so far this year and that definitely has to go to
Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. It's so blue which speaks to my
ravenclaw soul and just shiny and like look at that and like look at that, and that.
It is stunning and like even the page there, it's just so beautiful. And then
finally what are some books that you need to read by the end of the year and I
have a few for these, I have like a list of five that are like the main ones I really
really need to get to by the end of this year. And those are Uprooted by Naomi
Novik, I'll give you the Sun by Jandy Nelson, The Remains of the Day by Kazuo
Ishiguro. Only Ever Yours by Louise O'Neill, and another book by Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie
because I really want to read either Purple Hibiscus or Half of a Yellow
Sun but I'm not really fussed about which one. So yeah guys that was the mid year book
freak out tag, I hope you guys enjoyed this video. Let me know some of your
answers to these questions in the comments down below and what's been your
favorite book of the year so far? I hope you guys are all having a lovely
day and I'll see you soon in another video. Bye guys!
